The first municipal transportation project I managed from the design stage through implementation was the installation of a new local wayfinding system by the Factoria Mall in Bellevue. The system I designed was installed to guide bicyclists and pedestrians to the Factoria Trail, which safely connects non-motorized road users away from Factoria Boulevard SE and onto 124th Avenue SE. This small-scale project included over a dozen signs installed in concert and coordination with Engineering Department staff working on a bicycle wayfinding network through the City of Bellevue.

    INSTALLATION EXAMPLE: Bicycle Circle Rack

To expand the supply of short-term bicycle parking available in Downtown Bellevue, I managed the installation of twenty new bicycle racks. This project introduced elegant circle bicycle racks to the City of Bellevue and also featured several utilitarian high rail bicycle racks. I also designed stickers to affix to all new and existing bicycle racks to identify city-ownership racks and inform users how to report damage or other maintenance needs. Informing future bicycle rack implementation, I documented this project and created recommeded guidleines for bicycle rack installation based on recognized standards and input from multidisciplinary city staff. The guidelines were presented to the Transportation Commission as an exhibition of the Transportation Departments use a portion of the Pedestrian Access Improvements Fund to create more environments more friendly to non-motorized travlers.

I provided GIS services to support the Downtown Transportation Plan Update while working as an intern for the City of Bellevue Transportation Department. In this role, I managed a geodatabase containing spatial data describing all current and long-range transportation planning recommendations associated with the this project. Using this data, I produced maps visualizing the planning direction presented at monthly Transportation Commission meetings and staff meetings. These many mapping projects documented existing conditions and long-range transportation planning for roadways and transit service as well as bicycle and pedestrian facilities in Downtown Bellevue.

RESEARCH STUDY OVERVIEW: Project Description + Academic Partnership

PLACES: The Natural and Built Physical Setting

PRACTICES: The Way the Route is Used by Bicyclists

Funded by a Valle Scholarship from the University of Washingtons Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, I engaged in a six-month ethnographic research study of a bicycle route in Aalborg Denmark. To gain an understanding of the user experience of the routes physical elements and planned facilities, I created an online survey and conducted interviews with self-identified route users together with a graduate student from Dresden, Germany. Using the qualitative data collected, I designed maps describing how users experience the route, the practices they engage in, and elements of the physical setting. These maps are used as a visual tool for examining the descriptive statistics and ethnographic data across four parts of the theoretical framework we developed for researching mobilities design and the behavioral mobility of bicyclists. This research was done at the Center for Mobilities and Urban Studies housed in the Department of Architecture, Design, and Media Technologies at Aalborg University.

For my master thesis, I designed an observational research study aimed at describing the stopping behaviors used by bicyclists at intersections controlled by stop signs and/or flashing beacons in the City of Seattle. The primary intent was to identify whether it is more common for bicyclist to roll through intersections or to come to a complete stop, as is implicitly required by the Washington State Legislature. This was done through the development of a pilot study for observing bicyclists behaviors, based on a foundation of methodological and theoretical research as well as a review of domestic bicycle traffic accident data. During a three-day count period in November 2014, a pilot study documented bicyclists stopping behavior, collecting data on a total of 2,616 bicyclists at six count locations. Results from this study find that approximately 55% of all bicyclists used rolling stops and/or track stands, 25% failing to stop and only 19% coming to a complete stop. A statistical of analysis descriptive results find that the conditions with the strongest impact on bicyclists stopping behavior are type of signage in place at a given intersection, locations where green bicycle lanes are present, where on-street parking is permitted on the curb before an intersection, and instances when bicyclists turn left at the crossing.

In my public administration program, I engaged in a transportation policy analysis team project focused on determining best policy option for reducing congestion and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions from traffic on Interstate-5 around the City of Seattle. We established five options, including: 1) maintaining the status quo, making no changes to transportation management; 2) introducing tolling on I-5 to pass through Seattle; 3) expanding and promoting the RideShareOnline carpooling program; 4) allowing a new pay-by-mile vehicle insurance program; or 5) building a non-motorized highway to better connecting Seattle to regional centers. All five options were analyzed for their utility for in four areas, including: 1) effectiveness in achieving goals; 2) economic efficiency; 3) political feasibility; and 4) equitable impact and benefits for all members of society. Based on our analysis, my team determined that the implementation of a vehicle insurance program based on VMT is the strongest of the five policy options for achieving the stated goal.

A Proposal for Inner-Alley Boulevards to Support Complete Corridors by the UWBICYCLE BOULEVARDS | Digital Design Course | 2012

2D RENDERINGS: Before + After Design InterventionPROJECT DESCRIPTION

    BEFORE

    BEFORE

For my urban design coursework, I created a proposal considering the use of alleys in the University District as boulevards for bicycle traffic. The goal of this course was to improve the bikeability of the neighborhood West of 15th Avenue NE while exercising skills using graphic design software programs learned throughout the quarter.

For a team project analyzing the economic and employment opportunities in the Rainer Valley neighborhood, I engaged in opportunity mapping and data management. This study focused on the transportation connections to regional growth centers, calculations for location quotients to determine the local economic potential of various industries, as well as the existing educational opportunity in the three zip codes surrounding the study area. The final report was provided to South East Effective Development to inform work improving the quality of life in Southeast Seattle.

FLOODPLAIN BOUNDARIES: Base Map Identifying Trail Access

These drawings were used to analyze the potential impact of the natural environment on trail connectivity and access along a river in the Town of Eatonville. This set of maps represents a soil study and investigation of the floodplain along Marshal River. The maps were used to learn where the Greenbelt Trail may become unaccessible in the event of heavy rain or flooding. This study was used for an Initial Conditions Report for the 2012 update to the Town of Eatonville Comprehensive Plan.
