The women who make thesesashes come from Pujujil andspeak Kaqchikel. The belts wereoriginally made to wear overtraditional skirts, but today areworn as religious stoles. Theyalso look great as a belt tied overjeans. The designs representplants, flowers, and stars, inspiredby the natural elements that thewomen see in the mountainswhere they live. The main colorsare typical of Solola, and themembers of this group continueto use the designs and colors leftto them by their ancestors.

In ancient times, before the arrival of Europeans, Mayan menwore camisas, but they were simple, and not extravagantlydecorated. That is why, to this day, men’s shirts have small, subtle designs. The women’s blouses have flower embroideryaround the neck.

These hats, made for children by a groupof weavers in Pujujil I I , Solola, use naturaldesigns, including plants, animals, and thesun. Typical straw sombreros were too

uncomfortable for children, so the womenbegan crocheting hats to get them warmand protect their heads.

Many Mayan women usethese hairbands to createtheir traditional hairstyles. They wrap the bandsaround one or two piecesof hair and then tie theends together around theirheads to make a coronet. At the ends, the hairbandshave either fringe orpompoms.
