Surface heating and cooling system“Cofloor”:practical and functional

With the surface heating/cooling system“Cofloor”, Oventrop offers the specialisttrade not only products of first class qual-ity but also all components required for theeconomical installation of various layingsystems.

This includes base mats, a tacker sys-tem (base mat rolls and folded boards), aclamping rail system, a dry-build system, edge isolating strips, stainless steel dis-tributors/collectors, components for regula-tion and hydronic balancing, cabinets, pipes etc., all complying with standards, coordinated and in accordance with the lat-est technical developments.

Regarding the heating pipes, the user maychose the PE-Xc pipe “Copex”, the compo-sition pipe “Copipe” or the PE-RT pipe“Copert”. All pipes can be laid fast and eas-ily by only one person.

The composition pipe “Copipe” is alsosuitable for supply pipes and for the con-nection to heating or cooling generatorsand distributors/collectors.

As is generally known, a surface heatingsystem only works perfectly if hydronicbalancing of the mass flow in the supplypipes and heating circuits was carried outcorrectly. A main factor for a trouble-freeoperation of surface heating and coolingsystems is to ensure that the central flowtemperature control in front of the distribu-tor/collector and also the automatic individ-ual room temperature control of each

Summary

circuit at the distributor/collector is func-tioning correctly. This can only be achievedthrough hydronic balancing, i.e. the distri-bution of mass flow according to the heatdemand of the whole system.Oventrop offers a wide-ranging completeprogramme of valves and controls, suitablefor any surface heating system.

Surface heating and cooling:comfortable and economical

The times when energy was wasted care-lessly are over. Nowadays the maxim is“Save energy”. Not only because of thecontinuously rising cost for oil and gas,but also to avoid environmental pollution. This is why the surface heating and to anincreasing extent the surface cooling arebecoming more and more important whenchoosing the heating/cooling system fornew buildings as well as for renovationprojects. Comfort temperatures cannotonly be achieved economically during

heating periods but also during periodsof alternate heating and cooling. Energysavings result from the fact that the heat ina surface heating system spreads evenlyand that the flow temperature of the heat-ing and cooling water does not differ thatmuch from the room temperature (duringheating periods approx. 35°C instead of70°C and during cooling periods not below16°C). Another advantage which, when combinedwith a modern heating and cooling genera-tor, e.g. a low temperature or gross calo-rific boiler, heat pumps or cooled waterfrom a well, reflects in the energy con-sumption. A further energy saving is madeas temperatures can be reduced from thenormal 22°C to 20°C without loosing the“comfort” feeling. Moreover, surface heating stirs up lessdust than radiator systems and dry floorsprevent the build-up of germs, mites andfungus which can cause allergies.

“Cofloor” base mat systemfor heating/cooling

1

1 The Oventrop base mat system “Cofloor”with its coordinated components allows afast laying of the pipes by only one person.

The Oventrop base mats NP-35 and NP-11are a suitable thermal and sound insulationmade of expanded polystyrene, thermalconductivity group 040, covered with apolystyrene foil, building material class B 2,which is laid directly onto concrete screedor, if required, onto the additional insulation.

The special grid pattern (50 mm betweenthe nodules) is suitable for 14 or 16 mm PE- Xc pipes “Copex”, PE-RT pipes “Copert”and composition pipes “Copipe”.

The handy base mats have practically nowastage. They can be laid economicallyand easily in any room whether it is smallwith many angles or with a large surfacearea.

Laying base mats in larger rooms starts ina corner opposite the entrance door. Theouter rows of the base mats are connectedlike a press button closure. At the end ofthe room the base mats can be cut to sizeas required. Any off cuts can be used in thesame order.

By using the polyethylene foil of the edgeisolating strip and the overlap of the basemat, the floor surface is completely coveredand ready for the concrete or liquid screedto be laid.

Therefore a sound bridge to the raw con-crete flooring is avoided.

Several types of base mats are availablewith varying thickness of insulation: NP-35,NP-11 and the foil base mat NP-R (withoutthermal insulation made of polystyrene).

2 The nodules of the polystyrene foil (NP-35and NP-11) are filled with polystyrene foam. This increases the firmness of the nodulesfor the pipe fixing and secures the heatingor cooling pipes firmly.

Improved sound insulation of the basemat with a thickness of 35-2 mm:28 dB

1 The handy base mats NP-35 (illustr.) andNP-11 are thermal and sound insulated. If required, additional insulation has to beconsidered, see notes on page 20.

2 The systematic laying begins by placingthe edge isolating strip along the walls. The edge isolating strip has an additionalbonded foil, allowing a sufficient sealing ofthe surface for use with concrete or liquidscreed.

3 The tight fitting of the base mats at theedges is ensured through a continuedgrooved edging. Like a press button clos-ure, the overlap is pressed onto the firstrow of nodules of the adjoining mat andthus closes the area off completely (mostimportant when using liquid screed).

4 The strong structure of the nodules andthe clear grid pattern of 50 mm allow aclean and simple fitting of the pipes by only

one person with the calculated distance ofthe pipes being maintained.

5 The coil unwinder allows and easy andclean laying of the pipes on the mats.

6 In doorways and passages, an expansionstrip separates individual floor areas fromeach other. A slit corrugated pipe sleeveprotects the pipes where they cross over.

7 Having submitted the surface heatingpipes to a pressure test, concrete can belaid.

1 The economical Oventrop “Cofloor”tacker and clamping rail systems for foldedboard and base mat roll consist of a foldedboard 2 x 1 m or a base mat roll 10 x 1 m

for use with concrete or anhydrite liquidscreed. The folded board and base mat rollare made of expanded polystyrene and arelaminated with a tissue foil with an imprin-ted laying screen (screen distance 50 mm).

One longitudinal edge of the folded boardand of the base mat roll has a foil overlapand the opposite edge is equipped with anadhesive tape preventing the penetrationof humidity into the underlying insulationwhen applying concrete or anhydrite liquidscreed.

The folded board and base mat roll areclassed in the thermal conductivity group045 and 040 for 30-2 mm, building mate-rial class B 2 according to DIN 4102 with amaximum load of 4 kN/m² and 5 kN/m² for30-2 mm.

The 14, 16 or 17 mm Oventrop PE-Xcplastic pipes “Copex”, PE-RT plastic pipes“Copert” as well as the composition pipes“Copipe” are fixed onto the folded boardor base mat roll with tacker hooks or self-adhesive clamping rails made of polypropy-lene.

The folded boards and base mat rolls arelaid directly onto the concrete screed or, ifrequired, onto the additional insulation.

The Oventrop folded boards or base matrolls are laid in the same manner as thebase mats, starting in a corner of the roomopposite the entrance door. Off cuts can beused in the same order which leaves mini-mum wastage.

The “Cofloor” folded boards, base matrolls, tacker hocks or clamping rails allowan economical, quick and simple laying ofall components.

The imprinted laying screen makes it easyto lay the pipes either in a spiral or serpen-tine pattern.

The tissue foil ensures a secure fixing of thetacker hooks and/or the clean fitting of theself-adhesive clamping rails.

2,3  Due to the imprinted 50 mm layingscreen on the foil, Oventrop folded boardsor base mat rolls reflect a clean and orderlypicture of the pipework with 14, 16 or 17

mm PE-Xc pipes “Copex”, PE-RT pipes“Copert” or composition pipes “Copipe”.The clear lines of the laying screen make itvery easy to tack the pipes in a straight linewith the handy Oventrop tacker machine.

1 Laying of the “Cofloor” system “foldedboard” starts at the edge isolating stripat the right hand side wall in the relevantroom. The 100 x 200 cm folded board with

the reinforced tissue foil allows a fast lay-ing of the base. If required, an additionalinsulation should be considered (see page20 for further details).

2 If liquid screed is to be used, then theedge isolating strip must be additionallysealed (e.g. using a tape gun with self-adhesive tape).

3 One longitudinal edge of the folded boardand of the base mat roll has a foil overlapand the opposite edge is equipped withan adhesive tape which is covered with aplastic strip.

4 Laying the base mat roll (10 x 1 m). Ma-terial and process are identical to thoseused for the folded boards.

5 By using the Oventrop tacker machine, laying can be carried out economicallyby one single person. The 50 mm layingscreen imprinted on the foil, helps to fit thepipes in clear and straight lines. The sta-bility and strength of the tacker hooks andtissue foil ensure that the pipes are fixedsecurely.

6,7 The “Cofloor” clamping rail system(length = 1 m) with a self-adhesive strip for14 and 16 mm pipes, allows a clean andfast pipe fixing without damaging the tissuefoil. This also means that it is an additionaladvantage when using liquid screed.

1 Apart from the base mat system and thetacker system where wet concrete is used,Oventrop offers the “Cofloor” dry-build sys-tem. The components of the dry-build sys-

tem are suitable for renovating old buildingsas well as for new buildings. The Oventropdry-build surface heating/cooling systemcan be combined with standard dry flooringelements (such as Fermacell boards) butalso with normal concrete or liquid screed.

The “Cofloor” dry-build basic element con-sists of 25 mm thick polystyrene foam.It serves as thermal insulation and at thesame time as carrier for the individual dry-build heat/cooling conducting strips. Thespecific order of the grooves of the basicelement allows the Oventrop 14 x 2 mmcomposition pipe “Copipe” to be laid eitherin a spiral or serpentine pattern.Other patterns are also possible.

Oventrop recommends using the compo-sition pipe “Copipe” as it has a lower ex-pansion coefficient than the PE-Xc/PE-RTplastic pipes. A quiet operation within theheat/cooling conducting strips is thereforecertain.

The strips made of galvanised sheet steelwith a thickness of 0.4-0.5 mm are the opti-mum heat/cooling conductor into the dryflooring elements or the concrete or liquidscreed.

The practical pre-punched breaks points ofthe strips (998 mm long) allow an optimumplacement in any room.

Advantages:- the installation of the Oventrop dry-build

system “Cofloor” is without wastage andcan be carried out by only one person

- overall height is reduced compared to wetscreeds

- optimum heating/cooling output via thegalvanised steel sheet strips and elbows

- no delay in the building progress whendry flooring elements are installed

- no warm up period is to be observed withdry flooring elements

- the floor can be walked on immediatelyafter installation

The Oventrop dry-build system “Cofloor”can be used for wall heating/cooling evenwhen pipes are installed in a serpentinepattern.

“Cofloor” system for wall heating and coolingDry-build system

1

The large wall surfaces of a room are idealfor the installation of a heating or cool-ing system with composition pipes (e.g.“Copipe”).

Wall heating or cooling systems are lowtemperature systems. The temperatureof the heating medium or coolant is onlyslightly above or below the room tempera-ture and most of the energy is radiated.

With the Oventrop “Cofloor” dry-build wallheating and cooling system, the pipes withthe conducting strips and elbows are inte-grated in the thermal insulation. Due tothe large-surface covering of the dry-buildelements, the conducting strips allow atransmission of the heat into the room viathe wall finish.

The dry-build elements serve as insulationand carrier for the conducting strips andelbows. The pre-punched break points of

the strips allow an optimum covering of thewall surfaces.

Provided that no additional insulation isrequired, the dry-build elements are fixeddirectly onto the wall between wood bat-tens for plaster work. If an additional insu-lation layer is required, it has to be fixedfirmly onto the bare wall.

The wall is normally covered with dry-buildboards with a thickness of 12.5 cm whichare fixed onto the battens. The dry-buildboards are covered with the required wallfinish (wall paper, structural plaster, paint, tiles, etc.).

The dry-build wall heating and cooling sys-tems reduces the time of construction.

Due to the dry-build system, no humiditypenetrates the wall.

Contrary to floor surfaces, wall surfacesdo not represent a direct contact surface,so the surface temperature can be slightlyhigher during heating periods. For reasonsof comfort it is, however, recommended notto exceed an average surface temperatureof 40°C during heating periods. The maxi-mum temperature load of the wall finishmay reduce this limit. The maximum per-missible flow temperatures contained withinthe instructions of the dry-build boardmanufacturers must be observed.

As with underfloor heating, an incrementalheating test has to be carried out for wall

heating/cooling systems. This will confirmthat it functions correctly but is not intend-ed to dry the wall construction. Procedureand documentation must be carried out inaccordance with the dry-build board manu-facturer’s instructions.

Stainless steel distributors/collectors “Multidis SF”for surface heating and cooling system

The Oventrop stainless steel distributors/ collectors “Multidis SF” allow a central dis-tribution of the heating or cooling water tothe different circuits of each dwelling unit.

The Oventrop distributors/collectors aredesigned for surface heating and coolingsystems with circulation pump.

The supply and the return pipe may beconnected either on the left or right handside. The brackets allow the fixing of the distribu-tor/collector in the cabinet or directly ontothe wall. When using a heat meter, its lengths haveto be taken into consideration when choo-sing the cabinet. To enlarge the depth of the cabinet, theframe and the door have to be pulled out.

The ball valve DN 25 with temperature sen-sor connection M 30 x 1, item no. 140 67 08,can be used at the supply of the stainlesssteel distributor/collector “Multidis SF”.Hydronic balancing of the installation iscarried out with the help of the integratedinserts of the return collector.

1 Stainless steel distributor/collector “Multi-dis SF” with integrated flow measuring andregulating devices 0-5 l/min. in the flowdistributor. As for the distributor/collector, item no.140 43, the calculated flow rate is set at thehandwheel of the flow measuring andregulating device. The set value can beread off the viewing glass with scale(0-5 l/min.). Each heating/cooling circuitcan be isolated without modification of theset flow rate which means that the set flowrate is re-stored after reopening an isolatedheating/cooling circuit. The functions “set-ting” and “isolation” are thus autonomous.

2 Stainless steel distributor/collector “Multi-dis SF” with integrated regulating inserts inthe flow distributor. As for the distributor/collector, item no.140 45, regulation is carried out accordingto a chart (see technical information). The calculated flow rate is set at the hiddenstem of the regulating insert. A reproduciblepresetting is possible.

Oventrop offers a calculation programmefor the design of a surface heating systemwith composition pipe “Copipe”. The valveinserts M 30 x 1.5 in the return collec-tor which are convertible to thermostatic

operation allow the individual room tem-perature control prescribed in the EnergySaving Directive. The Oventrop electro-thermal actuators and room thermostats orthermostats with remote control which areavailable as accessories, are used for thispurpose.

As with any heating system, a hydronicbalance according to DIN 18380 is alsorequired for the surface heating system.

Regulation of the surface heating circuit iscarried out at:Stainless steel distributor/collector“Multidis SF”, item no. 140 43 52 to140 43 62,via the flow measuring and regulating de-vices at the flow distributor.

Setting is carried out whilst the circulationpump is in operation.

All valves of the heating circuit are to befully open.1 Lift the locking ring until it clicks into

position.2 Wind up locking cap.3 Set the calculated flow rate by turning the

red handwheel of the first flow measuringand regulating device.

The set value can be read off at the redindicator ring inside the viewing glass. The scale shows values between 0 and5 l/min. Carry out setting of all heatingcircuits.

The first values are checked andreadjusted if required.

4 With the setting being completed, closelocking cap until stop. Protect setting ofthe flow measuring and regulating de-

vices by pushing the locking ring downuntil it clicks into position.

Isolation and openingEach heating circuit can be isolated with-out modification of the set flow rate whichmeans that the set flow rate is restoredafter reopening an isolated heating/cooling

circuit. The functions “setting” and “isola-tion” are thus autonomous.

1 Isolation:The heating circuit is closed by turning thered handwheel clockwise until stop.

2 Opening:Turn the red handwheel anticlockwise untilstop. The flow measuring and regulatingdevice is opened and the set flow rate isrestored.

via the regulating inserts at the return col-lector:

1 Unscrew black cap, use an Allen key(size 5) if necessary.

2 Close regulating stem by turning the Allenkey (size 5) clockwise.

Then, open regulating stem to the calcu-  lated presetting by turning it anticlock-  wise.  (Example: Calculated presetting PSR =

2.5 – open stem by 2.5 turns, seepressure loss chart)

3 Turn black setting screw clockwise withan Allen key (size 6) up to the regulatingstem. This way, the setting can be easilylocated again, if for instance the heatingcircuit is closed at a later time by use ofthe regulating stem.

4 Replace black cap and tighten with an Allen key (size 5) if necessary.

Repeat the same process for all heatingcircuits.

Brass distributor/collector “Multidis SFI“ forindustrial surface heating and cooling systems

Surface heating and cooling systems forcommercial and industrial buildings arebecoming more and more important. Theceiling heights of these buildings are usu-

ally very high and therefore an even andeconomical distribution of the required tem-perature is needed. Utilising the large sur-face area together with a favourable verticaltemperature profile fulfils this demand.

The integration of the surface heatingsystem within the ground floor allows aninterior design that is free and flexible.Conventional visible heating systems haveto be cleaned and serviced regularly, butindustrial surface heating systems do norequire individual maintenance. Surfaceheating in commercial and industrial build-ings is therefore a heat distribution systemwhich is economical and energy efficientand with technical effort it can also be usedfor cooling.

1 The brass distributors/collectors “Multi-dis SFI” allow a central distribution of theheating or cooling water to the differentcircuits of an industrial surface heating/ cooling system. It is recommended to equipthe distributors/collectors with ball valvesDN 50. They allow the isolation of the sup-ply and return pipe, e.g. for maintenancework. Consoles with pipe clamps (includingsound insulation supports) allow a fixing ofthe distributor/collector onto the wall.

The ball valve at the flow distributor and theregulating valve at the return collector allowthe isolation of each heating circuit.

2 Summary with system componentsFive different distributor modules with two

to six heating circuit connections allow anindividual combination of up to 20 circuits. The individual modules are interconnectedwith flat seals. The distributor/collectorends are closed with plugs.

3 PE-Xc plastic pipes “Copex” sized 20 x 2mmand 26 x 3 mm can be connected to theheating circuit connections of the brassdistributor/collector “Multidis SFI” with cor-responding compression fittings. The pipesare made of cross-linked polyethylene andare oxygen tight according to DIN 4726.

The sheltered oxygen barrier protects thePE-Xc plastic pipes “Copex” against dam-ages on site.

4 Hydronic balancing of the individual sur-

face heating circuits has to be carried out inaccordance with the VOB DIN 18380 stand-ard. Regulation is carried out at the regula-ting valves integrated in the return collec-tor of the “Multidis SFI”.

Flow temperature control of surface heating systemsControl unit “Regufloor H” and

boiler connection system “Regumat F-130”

Economy and comfort of a surface heatingsystem can only be achieved if the correctlycalculated pipe layout and floor constructionis adhered to. Moreover, a temperature and

flow control of the heating medium adaptedto the surface heating must be taken intoconsideration. The main points of the regulation are theprovision of a permissible flow temperatureof the heating medium (this should beseparate from the boiler regulation) and thedistribution of mass flow in the individualheating circuits of the stainless steel dis-tributor/collector.

1 Control unit “Regufloor H”Fixed value control unit for the connectionto the stainless steel distributors/collectors“Multidis SF” for surface heating which alsosupply a radiator circuit. The unit regulatesthe flow temperature of the heating mediumto a constant value (fixed value control) by

adding some of the return flow water of thecollector with a temperature controller withcontact sensor and a three-way valve.

Control range 20-50°CMax. operating temperature 50°CMax. operating pressure 6 barkvs value 4.0

The medium in the heating circuits of thesurface heating system is circulated by anelectronically controlled pump. To protectthe surface heating against overheating, forinstance in case of failure of the temperaturecontroller, the control unit is equipped with amodule which switches the pump off.

2 The advantage of the control unit“Regufloor H” is the facility to integrate

the flow tem-perature control of a surfaceheating into the heating circuit of a radiatorsystem. The illustration displays theconnection to the supply and return of theradiator system.

3 Flow temperature control can be carriedout directly at the heating generator by usingthe Oventrop boiler connection system“Regumat F-130”. Flow temperature controlis carried out by a temperature controllerwith immersion sensor and a three-wayvalve.By using this solution, the whole circuit ofa heating system can be operated with theflow temperature adapted to the surfaceheating.

Flow temperature control of surface heating systemsControl unit “Regufloor HX“ with system separation

Years of experience have shown that un-favourable conditions in surface heatingsystems with plastic pipes may lead to cor-rosion problems caused by a penetration of

oxygen. In pure radiator systems, such corrosionproblems normally do not entail problemsas they may deposit in a number of sta-bilization zones.

In surface and especially underfloor heatingsystems, such deposits could impair theflow behaviour in the underfloor circuit. Mal-functions or even a breakdown of the circuitcould be a result.

1 The heat exchanger of the control unit“Regufloor HX” divides the system into aprimary and secondary circuit. The primarycircuit is the heating system and the secon-dary circuit is the surface heating circuit. This way, surface heating circuits with pipes

without oxygen barrier can be connected. These can be found in old installations or,system related, in new installations. Due tothe separation, a penetration of oxygen fromthe surface heating circuit into the boilercircuit is avoided. The other way round, apenetration of possible corrosion productsfrom the boiler circuit into the surface heat-ing circuit and thus a silting-up of the pipesis also avoided.

The regulating valve on the primary sideserves to control the set flow temperature. The temperature is detected with the help ofan immersion sensor on the secondary side.

The Grundfos pump “ALPHA” electronicallycontrols the pump output according to the

current heating water demand. Due to itsbronze body, the pump is corrosion resist-ant.

“Cofloor” system extension for surface coolingControl unit “Regufloor HC” for

alternate operation of heating and coolingfor all laying systems

The systems “Base mat”, “Tacker”, “Dry-build” and “Clamping rail” are also suit-able to generate a comfortable roomtemperature on warmer days of the year,

when cooling water rather than heatingwater is fed through the pipework. Theterm “thermal comfort” for room coolingis explained further in DIN 1946 part 2. Itis also described as soft or quiet cooling. This cooling system is not accompanied bydraughts, high air movements, dust gen-eration or high noise levels typical of theclassic air cooling methods. In addition, theenergy exchange between humans and acooling surface is through radiation, whichis similar to the thermal balance of humanbeings.

1 If the system is operated alternately withheating or cooling water, then the permit-ted flow temperature must be checkedfor the surface heating as well as for the

surface cooling operation. Oventrop offersthe control unit “Regufloor HC” for thispurpose, which will keep the temperatureof the medium at a constant set value evenduring cooling operation by mixing somereturn flow water. The three-way valve isoperated here by an electromotive actua-tor 24 V (0-10 V) which receives its signalsfor heating and cooling from an electronicroom thermostat.

2 The flow temperature regulating set foroutside temperature guided heating andcooling via the corresponding surface heat-ing and cooling systems enables an auto-matic changeover from heating to coolingfor each application.

Flow temperature regulating set consistingof:Climate controller heating/coolingOutdoor sensorFlow temperature sensorRoom humidity measuring transducerMemory stickElectrothermal actuatorElectromotive actuatorElectric sensor attached to pipe

3 The controller heating/cooling is designedfor a universal application in heating andcooling systems, e.g. for flow temperaturecontrol in surface heating and cooling sys-tems. With integrated measuring, controland timed function via two PI controllersand preset parameters for an easy initial

operation. The remote control can be usedfor certain applications (remote control ofthe operating mode, correction of the nomi-nal values and setting of the clock).

4 The room humidity measuring transducercalculates the dew point of the air humidity. In connection with the controller heating/ cooling, it avoids condensation of the pipe-work and chilled surfaces.

“Cofloor” system extension for surface coolingHeating surface regulation for heating and cooling

Example of surface heating and cooling system

Even in surface cooling systems, the En-ergy Saving Directive calls for automaticdevices allowing an individual room tem-perature control. For this purpose, the

actuators mounted on the stainless steeldistributors/collectors receive their signalsfrom electronic room thermostats which aresuitable for switching over from heating tocooling operation.

1 The changeover from heating to cooling iscarried out via the controller heating/cool-ing. It is, amongst others, connected to theoutdoor sensor, the flow temperature sen-sor as well as the room humidity measuringtransducer. The required room temperatureis calculated with the help of the measuredvalues of these system components and iscontrolled via the electromotive actuator. The controller heating/cooling also trans-mits the operating mode “changeover fromheating or cooling” to the electrothermal

actuator for the integration of the heating orcooling generator.

The switch-over signal is also transmittedto the connection system and to the corres-ponding room thermostats. Furthermore, adew point control can be used to protectthe chilled surfaces from condensation.

2 The room thermostat heating/cooling isused for individual room temperature con-trol. It has one entry for the operating mode“changeover from heating or cooling”.

3 The connection system is mounted in thecabinet of the surface heating/cooling andserves the distribution of electric signalsand the power supply of the room thermo-stats and actuators.

The Energy Saving Directive calls for a cen-tral flow temperature control of the heatingmedium (e.g. via the control unit “Regu-floor”) and for an individual selfacting room

temperature control e.g. with room thermo-stats and actuators.

Such regulating systems even out any tem-perature differences (e.g. short opening ofa window).

The Oventrop room thermostats and actua-tors fulfil these requirements. Wired andwireless devices are available for this pur-pose. The wired items are regulating com-ponents which work as two point (opened/ closed) or proportional (0-10 V) actuators.

1 Room thermostat or room thermostat-clock 230 V or 24 V with thermal actuator230 V or 24 V for room temperature controlvia the individual heating circuits. By usingthe room thermostat-clock, time controlled

temperature changes can be set.2 Distributor/collector “Multidis SF” inside acabinet with mounted electrothermal actua-tors. The wired connection to the roomthermostats is made via a plug-in rail whichis situated above the distributor/collector.

3,4 The wireless individual room tempera-ture control is carried out with a roomthermostat or a room thermostat-clock withwireless transmitter and the 4 or 6 channelreceiver. The two point actuators housed inthe cabinet (see illustr. 3) are connected tothe receiver. Apart from being suitable fornew buildings, existing buildings can alsobe upgraded with the wireless temperaturecontrol.

It is also possible to switch from heating tocooling operation.

5,6 For a wired individual room tempera-ture control, Oventrop offers proportionalactuators (0-10 V) which work with a 24 Vsupply voltage. The nominal value range ofthe electronic room thermostat can be lim-ited by use of the hidden limiting elements. The proportional actuator has the facility toreverse the actuation. This feature isnecessary for surface cooling.

7 Wireless receiver with time switch for 8channels. Application in connection withdistributors/collectors with actuators.8-channel time switch for the timed controlof up to 8 independent zones. Program-ming of the time switch and adaptation of

the transmitters is possible with removedcover.

Accessories for stainless steel distributors/collectorsDouble regulating and commissioning valves for hydronic balancing

Heat meter connection set

2

If the room temperature in partial areas ofthe heating system is reduced, it must beensured that the other areas are not under-or oversupplied. This condition is governed

by the pressure drops in the pipe systemand the installed valves and can only bedetermined by a heat demand and pipe-work calculation. Oventrop offers relevantcalculation programmes which amongstother, will deliver the settings of the valvesfor hydronic balancing not only for theregulation of mass flow to the stainlesssteel distributors/collectors but also of theindividual heating circuits connected to thestainless steel distributors/collectors.

1 Example of a two pipe heating systemwith surface heating areas and radiatorsconnected to the risers. Balancing of themass flow to every stainless steel distribu-tor/collector with a double regulating valve“Hycocon VTZ”.

2 The “Hycocon VTZ” is a double regulatingand commissioning valve for the manualhydronic balance between several dis-tributors/collectors or risers. The infinitelyadjustable presetting is lead sealable andlockable. Available with female or malethread. The balanced mass flow can easilybe controlled with the help of the flow-meter “OV-DMC 2”.

3 If it is required to measure the heat con-sumption of separate distributor circuits, for instance of separate dwellings, it is pos-sible to install a heat meter connection setin front of the corresponding distributor/ collector. These are offered by Oventroptogether with the double regulating andcommissioning valves “Hycocon VTZ”. Forthe connection of the supply and returnpipe, the connection set is available inangle or straight pattern. The connectionset is suitable for heat meters with a lengthof 110 mm (G 3/4 male thread) and 130 mm(G 1 male thread).

4, 5 Depending on the space available, the“Hycocon VTZ” allows various installationpositions, for instance turning the heatmeter by 90° if the depth is not sufficient.

2

In addition to the manual hydronic balan-cing of the distributors/collectors by usingthe double regulating and commission-ing valves, a hydronic balance during low

demand periods can also be achievedwith the help of the automatic differentialpressure regulators “Hycocon DTZ”. Thisensures that the valves of the individualheating circuits are protected from unac-ceptably high differential pressure.

1 Example of a two pipe heating systemwith radiators and surface heating areasconnected to the risers. A differential pres-sure regulator “Hycocon DTZ” is installedin front of every surface heating area. Theregulator has to be set to a nominal valueto be determined (e.g. 150 mbar). The regu-lator will maintain a constant differentialpressure between supply and return withina necessary proportional band.

2 The installation of an automatic differen-tial pressure regulator “Hycocon DTZ”allows that the distributor units can operateindependently. The permissible differentialpressure between supply and return can beset and locked at the “Hycocon DTZ”. A change in the system pressure has there-fore no influence on the heating circuits ofthe distributor units of the surface heating. A manual balance is not required.

3,4 To install the differential pressure regu-lator together with a heat meter connectionset, Oventrop offers connection sets inangle or straight patterns (installation sizes110 mm and 130 mm).

 ApplicationInstallation and assembly

Appl ication:The different models of the “Unibox” aresuitable for the operation of a surface heat-ing system in rooms with a heating surface

up to 20 m². They are designed for the con-nection of one heating circuit. When usingpipes with an inner diameter of 12 mm, alength of 100 m must not be exceeded. It is to be observed that the supply andreturn pipe are laid alternately side by side(see e.g. the spiral laying in the installationsketches pages 2, 3 and 4). A constantheating of the floor is thus guaranteed.

The “Unibox TSH” / “Unibox T” /“Unibox E T” / “Unibox E TC” allows thecontrol of the room temperature via the sur-face heating system. It is used in combina-tion with a low temperature heating systemwith a maximum flow temperature of 55°C.

The “Unibox RTL” / “Unibox E RTL” allows the temperature limitation of heatingsurfaces with return temperature limiter. The room temperature is still controlled viathe radiator. Installation is carried out incombination with a radiator heating with amaximum flow temperature of 70°C.

The “Unibox plus” / “Unibox E plus” / “Unibox vario” / “Unibox E vario” allowsthe individual room temperature controlwith thermostatic valve and the tem-perature limitation of heating surfaces withreturn temperature limiter. As for the “Unibox RTL”, installation iscarried out in combination with a radiatorheating with a maximum flow temperatureof 70°C.

Installation and assembly:

For a simple installation of the pipes in thewall, Oventrop offers a pipe conduit unitsized to the depth of the “Unibox”/ “Unibox E”.Installation may be carried out easily. The pipe conduit unit and the installationset are fixed in the wall (see illustr. 1 instal-lation sketch). The heating pipes are laidaccording to the installation instructions.

Important:The “Unibox” always has to be installedbehind the surface heating circuit, i.e.in the return pipe. The direction of flowhas to be observed (illustr. 2).

For the connection to the valve, Oventropoffers suitable compression fittings. The

pipe conduit unit is closed and plastered. The fixing channel is closed with the coverplate. Control is carried out via the thermo-stat which is easily accessible. Care shouldbe taken that the thermostat is not influ-enced by other heat sources.

- Do not install near other heat sources,e.g. additional radiators (illustr. 3).

- Protect thermostat from direct sunlight(illustr. 4).

- Do not install at a location exposed todraught.

Example of installation for two surfaceheating circuits:In case of heating surfaces exceeding 20m²and a pipe length of more than 100 mper heating circuit, it is recommended to

connect two heating circuits of the samesize to the “Unibox” (illustr. 5). The installa-tion is then carried out by use of the Oven-trop “h” fitting, item no. 102 87 50 and thefitting item no. 101 63 04 or the Duo con-nection piece.

Sample formPressure test record of the Oventrop surface heating

and cooling system “Cofloor” according to EN 1264-4

Client: __________________________________________________________________________________________________

Building/ project: __________________________________________________________________________________________________

Stage of construction/

floor/dwelling: __________________________________________________________________________________________

Section of the system: __________________________________________________________________________________

Requirements

Before laying the screed, plaster or levelling compound, tightness of the heating/cooling circuits of the surface heating/coo-

ling system is tested by carrying out a water pressure test. Contrary to the VOB C (DIN 18 380 standard), the test pressuremust be at least for 4 bar and not more than 6 bar. This pressure must be maintained throughout the laying of the screed/

plaster*.

The test pressure is carried out section by section after having flushed the individual heating circuits. It must be ensured

that the succeeding sections of the system are protected from excess pressure (if necessary, by main isolation device in

front of the distributor/collector).

Alternatively, the tightness can also be tested by carrying out a pressure test with compressed air. Here, the maximum test

pressure amounts to 3 bar.

Regulating sets for surface heating systems

with bypass valve

 Application:

The regulating set with bypass valve is required

for the control of the flow temperature of a

surface heating system, for instance in

combined radiator/surface heating systems.

The required flow temperature is set at the

temperature controller. The electric pipe

contact safety switch switches the circulation

pump off as soon as the set flow temperature

is exceeded. The bypass valve serves to

regulate the flow rate of the surface heating

circuit.

Regulating set for surface heating systems

with "Tri D TR" three-way diverting valve

 Application:

The regulating set with "Tri-D TR" three-way

diverting valve is required for the control of theflow temperature of a surface heating system,

for instance in combined radiator/surface

heating systems. The required flow rate is set

at the temperature controller. The electric pipe

contact safety switch switches the pump off as

soon as the set flow temperature is exceeded.

Depending on the setting of the temperature

controller, the three-way diverting valve divides

the flow volume into a return flow and a bypass

flow. The check valve installed in the bypass

prevents a wrong flow against the three-way

diverting valve.

 Advantages, service

1  The almost ideal “temperature profile”from floor to ceiling.Compared to other heating systems, thesurface heating can be referred to as the

heating system with the ideal temperatureprofile. Depending on its usage, the hotwater surface heating system offers theadvantage that an energy saving of 6 to12% may be achieved due to the lowertemperature of the heating medium and thelower room temperature.

2  As system supplier of the surface heatingand cooling system “Cofloor”, Oventropoffers high quality system solution guaran-teeing maximum benefit for the installationand the later comfort. This does, at thesame time, mean an obligation to observe amultitude of rules and standards.
