URBAN BIRDING is the name of the tourism product that we have created in Extremadura around the lesser kestrel.
To do this, URBAN BIRDING is bringing together a wide variety of tourism activities and experiences to help travellers learn, enjoy and watch lesser kestrels in their urban habitats and the species’
nearby habitats. All this combined with the other tourism resources that Extremadura offers tourists, such as its significant and distinguished historic-artistic heritage, its enviable nature,
and the quality of its gastronomic products. As well as, of course, the warmth, friendliness and hospitality of its people.
This is just the start of your URBAN BIRDING adventure.

BIRDING IN EXTREMADURA CLUB
What is Urban Birding? Why was Urban Birding created?
More than 60 tourism experiences with a common denominator: the lesser kestrel
What are you waiting for!
URBAN BIRDING is the name of the tourism product we have created in Extremadura around one of its most peculiar birds, the lesser kestrel.
URBAN BIRDING, as travellers who read this catalogue will see, is a tou- rism product that brings together different companies in the region: official, ornithological and nature tourist guides, activity, photography and hunting companies, accommo- dation, restaurants and gastrono- mic establishments, as well as art studios and drawing and painting workshops. Its aim is to present visitors with a diverse and quality tourism offer.
To do this, URBAN BIRDING brings together a wide variety of tourism activities and experiences that help travellers learn, enjoy and watch lesser kestrels in their urban habi- tats and the species’ nearby habi- tats. All this combined with other tourism resources that Extremadura offers tourists, such as its histo- ric-artistic heritage, its enviable nature, and the quality of its gas- tronomic products. As well as, of course, the warmth, friendliness and hospitality of its people.
This is just the start of your URBAN BIRDING adventure.

The URBAN BIRDING product is a tourism opportunity for travellers to enjoy the dual peculiarity offered by Extremadura:
View and watch the second sma- llest falcon in the world that nests colonially in urban centres. Visit the urban SPA. Extremadura is the only region in the world in which an SPA has been declared within urbanised towns and cities with the aim of protecting the lesser kestrel populations in these areas, with the locations of their habitats clearly defined.

Who is part of it? The URBAN BIRDING product is made up of three types of members:
Companies, which are responsible for designing, organising and providing the different activities and experiences starring the lesser kestrel, which are detailed in this catalogue.
Facilitators/dynamisers, which are admi- nistrations, institutions, bodies and entities that do not directly offer activities (with exceptions). Their role is that of drivers, promoters, informers and dynamisers of the product.
Opinion leaders, either individual or co- llective agents (associations) who work to provide information on the product.
The URBAN BIRDING tourism pro- duct is created as part of action E9 under the LIFE ZEPAURBAN project (LIFE15 NAT/ES/001016). It is a pro- ject funded by the European Union, with the aim of guaranteeing the long term conservation of the lesser kestrel. To do this, work is being done on the conservation and ma- nagement of lesser kestrel breeding colonies in urban SPA, preserving feeding habitats - cereal-producing steppes and extensive dry-farmed crops - and raising the awareness of the population, especially people closest to their breeding colonies and the owners or users of the buil- dings where they nest. By incorporating the tourism aspect into the project, it is intended, on the
one hand, contributing to raising tra- vellers’ awareness and increasing their knowledge about this highly significant species that is in notable decline. On the other hand, the aim is for the lesser kestrel to be seen by the local popula- tion, companies and agents in the te- rritory as an element that can generate income and economic development for the areas in which it is present. In this way, by achieving the enga- gement of the local population and capturing the interest and attention of travellers like you, who are rea- ding this, together we will take a step towards ensuring that the lesser kes- trel (mical, ansarillo, xoriguer petit, lagarteiro etc.; some of the names it is given) continues to sail the skies of our towns and cities.

The two most important and imposing cemeteries in the city are visited in a cultural tour through time: the Santa María la Mayor church (and its burials of illustrious me- dieval figures) and the Vera Cruz cemetery, the first medieval cemetery. The walk is rounded out by observing the botanical symbology that the different species in the cemetery garden contain, while also enjoying identifying the ornithological species that give life to this magical place with their song. The experience consists of getting to know the habitat of the lesser kestrel “in situ” here, the Cáceres manzanilla olive grove in the northern mountains of Extremadura that provide shelter and food for this unique bird. Getting to know the particularities of this rural ecosystem and lear- ning about olive tree and extra virgin olive oil culture as a fundamental part of its history and way of life. This livelihood shared by man and the lesser kestrel is an example of coexistence between two species that benefits both; this is what we want to draw attention to and share with our visitors.

Three towns in the south of Extremadura were fundamental to the life and career of the baroque painter, Francisco de Zurbarán: Fuente de Cantos, where he was born, Llerena, where he lived and Zafra, where he received professional commissions. These same towns now have an SPA in which to spot and follow the lesser kestrel and other urban birds. Our experience will bring together both resources to get to know, on the one hand, the painter’s land, his museum-house, visitor centre and some of his works and, on the other, meet the bird of prey and enjoy it in the buildings where it is found.
Depending on the accommodation chosen, the itineraries will depart from Zafra or Llerena, in both cases going through the town of Fuente de Cantos. For groups such as associations or primary and secondary schools, see our websi- te for different options for enjoying the experience.
Parish churches included in the Zafra, Fuente de Cantos and Llerena SPA.
