IRISHFILMFESTA

Con la quinta edizione di IRISHFILM -FESTA pronta a partire, vale la pena disottolineare come in cartellone siano pre-senti per la prima volta diversi film chesono addirittura dell’anno in corso. Unadimostrazione del collegamento ormaidiretto e consolidato della nostra rassegnacon la cinematografia irlandese, che con-sentirà al pubblico della Casa del Cinemadi vedere in anteprima titoli ancora ineditinella stessa Irlanda. Come d’abitudine, la proposta mescolageneri, temi e formati: lungometraggi di fin-zione, documentari, film e serie tv,cortometraggi (è la sezione competitiva delfestival, con dieci titoli in lizza). Non minoreè la varietà geografica: si spazierà dalKerry di inizio Novecento, location deiprimi film americani girati in Europa e rac-contati dal documentario Blazing the Trail,alla regione di Cork dove atterra fortuno-samente un pilota sudamericano in TheRunway (tratto da una storia vera, cheappassionerà giovani e adulti); e dove faritorno, di rientro dall’America, il protago-nista di The Pier (una bella opera indie chepotrebbe restare nel cuore di molti). Tre film sono ambientati nell’Ovest dell’i-sola, e di tutti e tre - curiosamente - sonoprotagonisti dei poliziotti: The Lost Sons,The Pikemen e The Guard, che è il gang-ster-western d’apertura, già recordd’incassi in Irlanda, dominato dal colossaleBrendan Gleeson. Non mancano Dublino(in Parked, un Colm Meaney insolitamente

dimesso vive in macchina, parcheggiatodavanti alla baia della capitale) e zone limi-trofe: il Wicklow in One Hundred Mornings,il Kildare in Rewind, esordi alla regia di dueartisti della luce, il fotografo Conor Horgane il direttore della fotografia PJ Dillon. C’èanche l’Irlanda del Nord con The Fountain,il quartiere di Derry che si vede nel pluri-premiato documentario Paradisodell’italiano (!) Alessandro Negrini. E ci sarà perfino una trasferta a Mel-bourne, dove accompagneremo unacoppia di irlandesi in seconda luna di mielenel film più avventuroso del festival, TheBallad of Des and Mo: girato, montato eproiettato in soli tre giorni. Un modello diproduzione davvero alternativo, che verràillustrato in una lezione di cinema dal gio-vane regista e docente universitario JamesFair. Infine, l’appuntamento più importante delfestival: una Masterclass di lusso, cheseguirà la proiezione di The Butcher Boy,e sarà tenuta da Stephen Rea, cui IRISH-FILMFESTA già lo scorso anno avevadedicato un vero e proprio focus. Lo acco-glieremo come very special guest, e glichiederemo di raccontarci qualcosa dellasua vasta esperienza di attore nel cinema(non solo) irlandese. Vi aspettiamo.

With the fifth edition of the IRISHFILM -FESTA about to commence it is wellworthwhile to underline the fact that, forthe very first time, the programme containsa number of films belonging to the currentseason. This only goes to show that the IFFhas, by now, created direct andconsolidated links with the Irish cinemaworld, so that Casa del Cinema’saudiences will have the opportunity ofenjoying premiere previews of films whichhave not, as yet, been released in Ireland. This year, as usual, we offer a mix ofgenres, themes and formats: full-lengthfeatures alongside documentaries, TV filmsand series as well as shorts (the festival’scompetitive section, with ten titles takingpart). Of no less importance is thegeographical variety of the films’ locations:from early twentieth-century Kerry, thesetting of the first US films shot in Europe(as narrated in the documentary Blazingthe Trail), to the Cork area where a SouthAmerican pilot crash-lands in The Runway(based on a true story that will charm bothyoung and old alike) and where the leadcharacter returns after a stint in America inThe Pier (a lovely indie film bound to win aplace in the hearts of many). Three of the films are set in the West ofIreland, and all three – curiously- feature apoliceman as the main character: The LostSons, The Pikemen and The Guard. Thelatter, the gangster-western that opens ourprogramme, has already topped box-officegross records in Ireland, starring thecolossal Brendan Gleeson. Dublin features

too (in Parked, where an unusually retiringColm Meaney lives in a car in a car-parkfacing Dublin Bay) as does its hinterland:Wicklow in One Hundred Mornings, Kildarein Rewind, both filmmaking debuts directedby lighting artists, the photographer ConorHorgan and cinematographer PJ Dillon.Northern Ireland too is present with theDerry Fountain district which appears in themulti-prize-winning Paradiso by the Italian(!) Alessandro Negrini. There is even a trip to Melbourne, wherewe shall accompany an Irish couple ontheir second honeymoon in the festival’smost adventurous film, The Ballad of Desand Mo, shot, edited and screened in amere three days. An authentic paragon ofalternative production, which will beillustrated during a lesson on cinema bythe young filmmaker and university teacherJames Fair. Finally, the festival’s most importantappointment: an invaluable MasterClass,following the screening of The ButcherBoy, held by Stephen Rea, to whom theIRISHFILMFESTA devoted a special focuslast year. Alessandro Negrini è un regista e poetaitaliano. Nato a Torino, si definisce “registaper errore”. Ha trascorso la maggior partedegli ultimi anni ’90 viaggiando in Europa,e scrivendo, fino a trasferirsi nel 2001 in Ir-landa del Nord. Prima di diventare registaha lavorato come bidello in una scuola ele-mentare, come rappresentante dello sco-nosciuto Circo Tribertis, come guida nonaccreditata in un museo e come distribu-tore a domicilio di Pagine Gialle. Alessandro Negrini is an Italian filmdirector and poet. Born in Turin, he defineshimself “a film director by mistake”. Hespent much of the late 1990s travellingEurope writing and in 2001 he moved toNorthern Ireland. Before becoming a FilmDirector he worked as school janitor, salesman for an unknown circus, illegal museumguide and deliveryman of yellow pages.His most acclaimed work has dealt withsocial exclusion, and homelessness. Hisworks combine documentaries, fiction andpoetry.

SynopsisDerry, Northern Ireland. The Fountain, inthe heart of the city once a vibrant com-munity, where people used to dance to-gether despite religious differences, now adisappearing Protestant neighbourhoodkilled by fear and politics and turned intoan open air prison, now living behind afence. Roy Arbuckle, a musical troubadour, deci-des it’s time to challenge one of the mon-strosities left by the war in Northern Ireland:fear. He wants to reunite his former show-band, The Signetts and his formers musi-cians, now in their seventies, in a high-riskattempt to organize a major dance night,and get Protestants and Catholics dancingtogether. For this event Roy wants to openup the stronghold of Protestant heritageand culture in Derry: the Memorial Hall,once the most popular dance hall in theheart of the city.

Gerard Hurley was born in Ireland but leftfor Switzerland at age 15 to work withhorses. In 1987 he settled in the UnitedStates, first working in the oil fields ofOklahoma, later travelling around theStates taking work in construction, bartending, and doing other odd jobs. At thebeginning of the 1990s he begancooperating on low-budget films in NewYork where he took an ever greater interestin writing scripts. In 2008 he wrote,directed, produced, and starred in his firstfeature, The Pride, a film that exploresdomestic abuse in the “Irish gypsy”community in America. The Pier is hissecond feature film.

Single Handed is an Irish television dramaseries broadcast on RTÉ Television. Setand filmed in the west of Ireland, it focuseson the life of a member of the GardaSìochàna Sergeant Jack Driscoll (played byOwen McDonnell). Partially inspired byGarda corruption in County Donegal, theseries began in RTÉ One in 2007.

For his performance in The Lost SonsStephen Rea has won this year’s IFTA -Irish Film and Television Award for BestSupporting Actor.
