THEME: Ever since its very first edition in 1909, the Giro d’Italia (Tour of Italy) has always offered extraordinary athletic performances with its legendary champions riding through Italy, from Valle d’Aosta down to Sicily. This long distance road bicycle race is not only a great sports event, but also a winning and exciting journey into the history of our Country. OBVERSE: On a long and winding road disappearing into the horizon, two cyclists in the foreground riding old-fashioned bicycles and pushing hard down on their pedals 100 years ago just as they keep doing nowadays. TEMA: Insieme a Pompei, Ercolano è uno dei più importanti siti archeologici d’Italia. La città romana, il cui nome deriva dalla leggendaria figura di Ercole, fu ricoperta di cenere nella grande eruzione del 79 d.c. Nel XVIII secolo iniziarono gli scavi che portarono alla luce magnifiche costruzioni perfettamente conservate, resti di scheletri e pergamene che hanno dato un importante contribuito alla conoscenza e al patrimonio storico dell’umanità. DRITTO:. Rappresentazione del gruppo scultoreo che decorava il giardino della Casa dei Cervi. ROVESCIO:. Particolare di un rilievo neo attico in marmo in cui una ninfa raccoglie l’ acqua di una fontana con un corno.

THEME. Together with Pompei, Herculaneum is one of the most relevant sites of the Italian archaeological patrimony. Named after the legendary Hercules, the Roman city was covered by ash in the large eruption of the volcano Vesuvio in 79 AD. In 18th century the excavations started and magnificent buildings in excellent conditions, well preserved skeletal remains and written scrolls came to light, thus giving an important contribution to the knowledge and historical heritage of mankind. TEMA: Annibale Carracci rappresenta uno dei più grandi riformatori della storia della pittura che, distaccatosi delle forme intellettuali e fredde del Manierismo, propose il ritorno ad una pittura diretta e naturale, attraverso uno stile originale che armonizzava, con esiti straordinari, accademismo e naturalismo. DRITTO: Un autoritratto del pittore Annibale Carracci, opera che ostenta il suo stile raffinato e verista nello stesso tempo, distrutta, con molta probabilità, durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. ROVESCIO: Particolare del dipinto Il trionfo di Bacco ed Arianna, tratto dal ciclo pittorico con cui Annibale Carracci affrescò all’inizio del XVI secolo la volta della Galleria di Palazzo Farnese a Roma.

THEME: Annibale Carracci is one of the greatest reformers in the history of painting. He moved away from the cold, intellectual forms of Mannerism to restore a more immediate, natural painting thanks to an original style which combined academism and naturalism with extraordinary results. OBVERSE: Self-portrait of the painter Annibale Carracci where his realistic and refined style can be specially appreciated. This painting was most probably destroyed during World War II. REVERSE: Detail of the fresco Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne drawn from the pictorial cycle painted by Annibale Carracci on the vault of the Gallery of Rome’s Palazzo Farnese at the beginning of the 16th century.

TEMA: Il Futurismo è ritenuto unanimemente il più autorevole contributo dato dagli artisti e dagli intellettuali italiani all’arte e alla cultura del XX secolo, e la pittura futuristica italiana, in particolare, ha saputo rinnovare il linguaggio pittorico armonizzando scienza ed arte, rigore e fantasia. DRITTO: Particolare dell’opera Compenetrazione iridescente n. 4 realizzata intorno al 1912 da Giacomo Balla, illustre protagonista del Futurismo,che giunse ad una nuova fase di ricerca pittorica fortemente sintetica. ROVESCIO: Raffigurazione della scultura in bronzo denominata Sviluppo di una bottiglia nello spazio, opera del 1913 di Umberto Boccioni, artista che del Futurismo è stato il fondatore e l’esponente più rappresentativo.

THEME Futurism is unanimously considered as the most remarkable contribution which the Italian artists and intellectuals gave to 20th century art and culture. Especially the Italian futuristic painting was able to renew the pictorial language by combining art with science, rigour with imagination. Important protagonist of Futurism, Balla achieved a brand new and very synthetic phase in his pictorial research . Questo straordinario personaggio riuscì a vincere il buio mettendo a punto nel 1829, a soli 29 anni, il suo geniale metodo di scrittura a rilievo. DRITTO: al centro della moneta, raffigurazione di una mano in posizione di lettura sulle pagine di un libro; in alto, sono rappresentati due gabbiani in volo, simbolo del sapere libero e universale. THEME: The rock carvings of Tanum, in Southern Sweden, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the excellence of their images, but also because they are silent and wonderful witnesses of the lively culture which flourished during the transition period between the Age of Bronze and the Age of Iron. OBVERSE: Months from January to June: detail of some petrogliphs in Tanum depicting ships floating, humans fighting, as well as hunting scenes which are quite typical of the Northern peoples of the Bronze Age. REVERSE: Months from July to December: detail of some petrogliphs in Tanum depicting the sun, which is a basic element of this civilization, and scenes of people working in the fields.
