The Carthago phenomenon

Motorhome production at Carthago is a 33-year success story, which began with camping buses based on the VW camper van and went via alcove vehicles to today's semi-integrated and integrated models, where Carthago now plays a pioneering role. As different as the models may have been over the years, they were and still are based on the fundamental values which were consist-ently put into practice in this period. Then as now, every Carthago motorhome stands for top quality, excellent liv-ing, sleeping and driving comfort, intelligent and reliable technology and not least individual design that makes the brand instantly recognisable.

The high degree of in-house production is the basis for our famous quality. All the components that make a Carthago a unique masterpiece are manufactured by us. Production of the ultra-stable chassis parts through to the exterior hatches, as well as the building of the robust furniture elements in traditional and professional cabinetmaker quality – we have made a conscious decision to do all this and more in-house. That has enabled us to ensure top technology in the premium class, and to transfer it to the medium class. This development is unique because most companies in the industry develop the other way round: They started with caravan production and transferred this technology to motorhomes. However, we are convinced that the Carthago way is the better one for you as discern-ing customers and we are pleased that Carthago is also regarded throughout Europe as a benchmark for quality and technical innovation for this reason.

Today, Carthago operates three production locations: Schmalegg is responsible for the dream motorhomes liner de luxe and highliner, in Ravensburg-Deisenfang a highly qualified team manufactures the chic e-line and s-plus, and finally, our high-tech plant in Odranci, Slovenia produces the equally popular models chic c-line und c-tourer. Each production location is precisely designed for its distinct se-ries. On the one hand, this specialisation ensures top quality expected of Carthago by our customers, on the other they guarantee the perfect balance between price and perfor-mance. What's more, it enables us to combine craftsman-ship with technologically superior series production.

With the completion of our Carthago-City in Aulendorf at the end of 2012 / beginning of 2013, this corporate philoso-phy will stay essentially the same, except that liner de luxe, highliner and e-line as well as s-plus are then produced under one roof in perhaps the most modern motorhome factory in Europe with state-of-the-art machinery and perfect logistics.

Already, you will find the result of perfect craftsmanship and modern production methods in every Carthago. Take for instance our legendary chassis. Exceptionally stur-dy, durable and optimally insulated, the cabin comes with a torsional rigidity and solid construction you can actually hear when you glide along even poor roads without any irritating noise. Do you know another manufacturer that has so much confidence in its body shells that it offers a ten-year water ingress warranty?

All the technology used in the construction of Carthago motorhomes, but also all the tests that a Carthago under-goes until it is ready for serial production, are not an end in themselves but have only one purpose: your satisfaction. AdvantagesUltra-stable RTM polystyrene hard foam core as a self-supporting element eliminates the need for timber reinforcement or PU. Aluminium inside walls also add greater stability. The RTM poly-styrene core is highly resistant to shearing and pressure and also offers top stability and rigidity. The timber-free structure retains its value because it doesn't rot, plus the torsional rigidity provides high driving safety and comfort. No thermal bridges in the walls, perfect weight-strength ratio.

Innovative Carthago lightweight construction

Lightweight construction is simple, but intel-ligent lightweight construction is an art. When it comes to lightweight construction, Carthago is a pioneer. We changed the game back in 2008 with the chic c-line. For the first time there was an integrated motorhome with maximum living and driving comfort, which as a 3.5-tonner still offered a practical load capacity. The secret? On the chic c-line, Carthago replaced lightweight construction with intelligent lightweight con-struction, which is also used on the c-tourer. This differentiation is important, because any-one can produce lightweight construction per se by leaving out equipment or comfort features – to put it simply: reduced equipment as stand-ard, lower fresh water, grey water or fuel tank volumes, a less powerful basic engine. Carthago is different: comfort, quality and fea-tures remain unchanged.

Go to the limit, but never exceed the limits of physics and also not create any restrictions for the customer, that is the clear standard for the developers at Carthago. Our promise to you: Carthago never takes lightweight construction lightly.

Carthago driving safety and comfort

Safety allows no compromises. For this reason, on the c-tourer Carthago relies not only on the modern safety and comfort systems of the Fiat Ducato and of the AL-KO low frame chassis (standard: I 147, I 149, I 150/optional), but raises the standard with Carthago's own safety tech-nology. Our understanding of safety is not only safety on the road, but also security when you arrive at your holiday destination. It's good to know we've done everything possible to achieve this.

Carthago received the first ever TÜV approved certificate for motorhome driving comfort to be awarded in the entire motorhome sector. It says everything that, in a comparison with five competitor models, the Chic c-line passed all the tested criteria, and won a number of “best product” evaluations!

Carthago chassis are not just good to look at, they are also practical. Due to segmenting and well thought-out attachment of accessories, easier replacement in the event of damage is possible (cost-saving). That's a big advantage compared to the GRP front or rear panels usual on other makes.

Carthago furniture in cabinet-maker quality

Nothing matches good craftsmanship! We take this high standard seriously at Carthago. It's a principle embraced by all the employees in our own furniture workshop. Every furniture body is produced there and is finished with care-ful craftsmanship and precision. The joining technology of the individual furniture parts is a Carthago speciality. They are not just bolted together - as is usual in the sector - but also additionally joined using the traditional tongue and groove method in true cabinet-maker tradi-tion.

The result is higher quality you can see and feel. Characteristic of Carthago furniture is its dura-bility and reduced noise.

Sleeping comfort

Everything for a good night's sleep. In a Cartha-go motorhome, you sleep like a baby. Guaran-teed! That's not just because of the comfortable ambience in the vehicle, the good indoor climate thanks to the microfibre wall covering on the inside walls, the wall heating effect thanks to aluminium on the inside of the walls or the fine fragrance emitted by the furniture and the selected fabrics. We believe that a good sleep comes from a good bed! For this reason, Carthago beds are very long, very wide, also have orthopaedic 7-zone cold foam mattresses which adapt themselves perfectly to the body and support it in the right places (Economy Package).

If you want to sleep separately or if you're trav-elling with children or friends, the ideal solution are the central folding beds in some semi-inte-grated vehicles or the front folding beds in all Carthago integrated vehicles. Of course they all have the largest sleeping surfaces of their class and are easy to climb into.

Carthago: Semi-integrated motorhomes

Semi-integrated seems to mean compromise to some manufacturers. Not to Carthago. The T-model ranges from Carthago are fully fledged motorhomes with exactly the same cabin as the integrated class, with the exception of the driver's cabin and lounge seating group area.

In every Carthago semi-integrated model there is even an air-conditioning installation in the double floor. A double floor which deserves the name, because on the one hand it contributes to stabilisation when driving and on the other it insulates perfectly and stores heat and there-fore serves as underfloor heating. Every T-model from Carthago is thus uncompromis-ingly winter-proof. The scooter garage in the rear of the semi-integrated models is spacious and is thus ideally insulated – as with the inte-grated members of the family.

All three integrated models are equipped as standard with the AL-KO low frame chassis Special Carthago.
