INDEX FOREWORDCatalogue 2014-15: Go Pro-Craft!

The Craftmark program, instituted in 2004, is today the largest certification mark for genuine, Indian hand-crafted products. Over the years, we have been able to build “integrity”, “quality” and “cutting edge design” as some of the core values we are synonymous with, evidenced by endorsements from large format global chains like West Elm and Ten Thousand Villages who regularly source our products. Today, we have an artisan network of over 20,000 artisans spanning 20 states of India.

This year, the products featured are an interesting mix from promising new craft organisations as well as established network members who are re-inventing their work. New craft forms covered include wild silk weaves from Chhatisgarh, Tambat (copper)-ware from Maharashtra, Channapatnam laquer products from Karnataka and hand-quilting from Rajasthan.

For the very first time, we have showcased 3 exclusive Craftmark collections that have been designed through the AIACA-Enterprise Support Program: Holiday is a bright and quirky amalgamation of colours combining the crafts of applique and tie-dye Taj Mahal is a classic range of crewel embroidery products and Wood-Block is a revival collection of virtually lost block-print motifs.

We are also pleased to inform you that we presented Craftmark and our grading system at an Alliance for Artisan Enterprise round-table and our model is one of the few selected for possible replicability at a global scale. Also, last year we recorded the highest number of new Craftmark memberships and renewals since inception, a definite ratification of our fundamental purpose-- to serve the artisan community of India.

With this larger pool of artisans to whom we are accountable, this year will see an accelerated ramp-up of our marketing operations. This means faster responses to your queries, the infrastructure for greater customisation and possible new synergies across different craft groups.

However, we cannot go the distance alone. So, continue to support all things handmade, believe in our artisan community and with us, GO Pro-Craft!

The Holiday Collection_________________________

Fun colours and geometric motifs combine to make this collection a perfect splash of colour for any corner of the home.

Here, AIACA’s design team has mixed the crafts of applique and tie-dye to create a co-ordinated range of products.

Interestingly, though these crafts are practiced in the neighbouring districts of Barmer and Jodhpur in Rajasthan, this was the first time that artisans worked together on a collaborative effort.

The Taj Mahal Collection------------------------------------------------

Crewel embroidery is traditional to the Kashmir valley of northern India. From a young age, girls of this region are taught

this craft. Inspiration is drawn from nature and beautiful motifs are created

of flowers, vines and paisleys using woollen or silken thread and a long,

hooked needle known as Aari. These products have been made by a

group of 7 young women artisans in Srinagar who are presently setting up their own enterprise. The marble inlay work of the Taj Mahal was chosen as inspiration keeping in mind the strong

Mughal influences in Kashmir.

CRAFTMARK CATALOGUE 2014-15

The Wood Block Collection----------------------------------------------

The village of Pilkhua in Uttar Pradesh was historically famous for its beautiful hand-carved wooden blocks that were coveted by hand-block printers across the country.

WIth the decline in block-printed textiles, the number of Pilkhua artisans also dwindled. They now create home utility and decor items (featured on page 16).

Early this year, the AIACA design team visited this cluster and unearthed some vintage block designs. These have been re-carved and modified to create the stunning tea-light holders showcased alongside.
