About Nigel Clegg Associates

I left the International Paint Company unexpectedly in April 1993, having spent a total of sixteen years working in the company’s aviation, industrial, marine and yacht paint divisions. Whilst working for International (now part of Akzo Nobel) I was closely involved in the development and testing of many of the company's yacht coatings systems including the Gelshield system (launched in 1986), and the various cosmetic finishing schemes such as Perfection 709 and Interspray 800 finishes and their associated base coats.

My last five years with International Paint were spent as European Technical Manager (Yacht Coatings division), which involved the detailed investigation of a wide range of coatings failures and defects on vessels from GRP composite dinghies to aluminium super-yachts, and steel narrow boats to wooden fishing vessels.

With the benefit of this experience, I set up a business to provide a Europe-wide independent yacht coatings and osmosis consultancy to support boatyards, yacht surveyors, insurance companies and private owners, as well as the paint manufacturers themselves. My services include detailed investigation of yacht coatings faults and failures, application issues, coatings specifications, supervision and inspection, as well as providing recommendations for remedial work where required. Where required, these services extend to negotiation, arbitration, and Expert Witness duties at Court; although I firmly hold the view that litigation should be reserved for those situations where all other options have been exhausted. The investigation of osmosis treatment failures has become a particular speciality, with much of my time being spent examining yachts on behalf of various coatings insurance companies. However, modern paint coating systems are becoming increasingly demanding in use, therefore I believe it is vital that end users fully understand the technical requirements of the materials they’re using. To this end, I have written a book called simply How to Paint Your Boat which encompasses the entire subject of boat painting and

varnishing, and includes a definitive guide to the many different types of coatings now available. The new edition is now available for £12.75 including UK postage and packing. I also write extensively for the yachting press, as well as writing and producing technical literature for major paint manufacturers including Blakes Paints, Camrex Chugoku, Jotun, and Indestructible Paint. As an additional service, I stock a wide range of test equipment and literature, including leading moisture meters, Barcol hardness testers, Ultrasound Testers, pH (Litmus) indicators, paint thickness gauges, hygrometers, sample bottles, vials, and many other essential items. All of these products are supplied at competitive prices, and come with first class technical support before and after purchase.

Our most popular items are shown on the following pages, but please do not hesitate to call if you need further information or impartial advice. This catalogue is updated regularly, so please enter www.passionforpaint.co.uk/products/catalogue.pdf into your browser to download the latest issue.

Our web site is also operational, and will eventually be developed to provide a wealth of useful information on a variety of topics relating to boats, osmosis and painting, with up to date news about new legislation and current topics. Why not take a look next time you go online?

Tramex Skipper Plus Marine Moisture Meter The world's favourite marine moisture meter just got better! The new Tramex Skipper Plus retains all the benefits of the original Skipper meter, along with a larger, easy to read display, an expanded measuring range from 5 to 30% H2O, and a ‘reading hold’ feature to avoid muddy knees when surveying bilge keeled yachts! Output to the moving coil display is also ‘digitally mapped’ to provide ‘linear’ readings, which are not cramped at either end of the scale. Like the original Skipper, the Skipper Plus uses widely spaced electrodes and advanced electronic circuitry to transmit low frequency radio waves deep into GRP hulls, seeking out moisture hidden in void spaces and under-bound laminate. This provides useful advantages over other meters; most of which can only detect moisture on or near to the gelcoat surface, and are prone to give misleading results. Readings can also be made through dry paint coatings (including most antifoulings), thus avoiding the need to scrape paint off before testing, and minimising hull damage. The new meter also has a hard-wood scale for Teak and Mahogany, and automatic switch-off after approximately two minutes of inactivity to help preserve battery life.

The Tramex Skipper Plus is very easy to use, and with regular monitoring, boat owners can log the moisture content of their own hulls from one season to the next to avoid nasty surprises. The Skipper is also a great investment when buying second-hand, and will help avoid wasted surveys.

The Skipper Plus package is available Ex Stock for £315.00 complete with a copy of The Short Guide to Osmosis and it’s Treatment, and Royal Mail Recorded Delivery postage. The Skipper comes ready to go with it's own protective pouch and long life battery. (Price excluding VAT £263.75) The Skipper Plus can also be hired (subject to availability). Please see page 6 for details of how to use. Long established as the ‘industry standard’ amongst marine moisture meters the Skipper is ideal for use on GRP composites, Sandwich and Timber vessels.

Skipper Plus Calibration Block Whichever moisture meter you use, it’s always a good

idea to keep a piece of hardwood or GRP composite in a dry place to use as a reference to check the meter. Sadly, most surveyors don’t think about this until it is too late; usually when they get a string of unexpectedly high readings, which leads them to worry that their meter might need to be re-calibrated!

To overcome this problem, Tramex has made calibration blocks available for all of their instruments, so they can be quickly and easily checked for accuracy against the manufacturers’ standards. Housing a network of close tolerance resistors, soldered to gold-plated contacts, the calibration blocks are very easy to use, and unlike timber are not affected by humidity. However, please note that these blocks are specific to the instrument type shown on the box.

Price £48.50 including VAT and postage (£40.42 Exc. VAT), or £38.50 if ordered with a Tramex Meter.

The One Stop Surveyors Shop! Sovereign Quantum Moisture Meter

The new Sovereign Quantum meter is specifically designed for use by Marine Surveyors, providing both Deep and Shallow modes for in depth or near-surface moisture detection. The meter includes an inbuilt calibration check facility, and will display both actual and comparative readings by setting a common datum point.

Ambient air temperature, relative humidity and the current ‘dew point’ temperature can all be displayed continuously if required. Additionally, surface temperature readings can be taken to check that substrates are warm enough to be painted, or to warn of potential problems such as surface condensation or misleading moisture readings.

A series of bright ‘traffic light’ LED's display instant visual information, with a numerical readout of specific data. The scanning head and temperature probes are permanently attached for added security and reliability, and no costly accessories are required.

Tramex Professional Meter for Timber If you work mainly with timber, there are many situations where a good probe meter still gives the quickest and most accurate measurement of moisture content. Whilst these meters are necessarily ‘destructive’ in operation, they are nonetheless ideal for checking new timbers and joinery in some dirty environments. The most popular of these meters is the Tramex Professional, (pictured left), which provides a clear digital readout from 8 to 40% H2O in 0.1% increments, and is housed in a durable die cast aluminium case. Other features include a ‘Hold’ facility for working in awkward spaces, and automatic switch off to maximise battery life. The Professional is priced at £295.00 inclusive (£245.83 + VAT), but for those who prefer a moving coil display, the Tramex Compact is priced at just £175.00 inclusive (£145.83 + VAT). Both the Professional and Compact meters have a socket for “Hammer” type probes, which are available separately.

Ultrasound Gauges for Metal Thickness If you survey metal boats, sooner or later you will need an ultrasound gauge. Some surveyors may also need to measure the thickness of GRP.

Having seen many different types of gauge come and go, we have settled on the Cygnus and Tritex range of ultrasound gauges, both of which are designed and built in the UK.

Cygnus and Tritex both use the single crystal, multiple echo technique to provide reliable readings through both paintwork and heavy rust, and come with extended guarantees. After sales service from both companies is also second to none, whilst pricing is competitive. Uniquely in this market, the Cygnus SE gauge allows thickness gauging on GRP, whilst maintaining functionality on metals.

Please see the Focus on Ultrasound feature on page 9 for more information.

Universal pH Indicator Sticks (Litmus Papers)

The pH value of GRP blister fluids can often provide a good indication of laminate condition, and may be used to help determine the cause of failure; for example, osmotic blister fluids are usually acidic, whilst alkaline fluids (as shown in the picture) may indicate a poorly cured epoxy coating or filler. Steel, alloy and Ferro cement boats can also suffer from underwater paint film blistering, and again the pH value of any blister fluid will often provide valuable clues to the cause. Conventional litmus papers can be difficult to read, and are only sensitive to narrow pH bands, therefore several different types are necessary if accurate readings are required over a wide pH range. These Universal pH Indicators combine four different types of litmus paper on each strip, to provide clear, accurate readings from pH 0 (strongly acidic) to pH 14 (strongly alkaline).

These indicators are invaluable when conducting hull surveys, and are supplied with instructions to explain the significance of typical readings. Supplied in a box of 100 strips with instructions for use. Please enquire about current prices and availability.

The Osmosis Manual This is a comprehensive manual written for anyone with an interest in treating osmosis or surveying GRP yachts. The manual is written in two parts; the first examines the causes and treatment of osmosis in some detail, and includes valuable information about preparation methods, moisture meters, and the all important subject of Health and Safety. The second part covers the more practical aspects of treatment, including a step by step guide to preparation, drying and application of coatings, with photographs of prepared laminates and sample painting specifications. This manual is currently being revised, and will be available again shortly.

Surveyors Kits and Workshop Kits A New Surveyors Kit is available for the inclusive price of £375.00 including VAT. The New Surveyors Kit is comprised of a Tramex Skipper Plus moisture meter, a copy of the Osmosis Manual, a bound copy of The Short Guide to Osmosis, a copy of the book How to Paint Your Boat and a box of 100 Universal Indicator strips. These kits are ideal for surveyors and boatyards, representing a worthwhile saving on these essential items when compared to individual prices. (Ex VAT Price £325.00) Several other kits are also available, including an Inspection Kit, a Workshop Kit and a Boatyard Kit. Please see price list below for more information.

Barcol Hardness Testers (934-1, 935 and 936) The cure of epoxy and polyester resins can be checked by measuring their hardness with an impresser tool. Originally developed for testing the hardness of aircraft rivets, airframes and fire ladders during World War II, the Barcol Impresser has become an industry standard for checking the cure of epoxy and polyester resins, including gelcoats, structural resins, and epoxy materials. Three different models are available for hard, semi hard and soft materials, but we stock all of the parts needed to quickly and economically change from one to another. Calibration disks are also kept in stock. In addition to new stock, we usually keep a selection of pre-used gauges for sale. However, as these instruments are imported from the USA, prices may vary according to Exchange Rate. Usually available Ex Stock. Price (New) £750.00 including VAT and UK Delivery (£625.00 + VAT). Please call for spare parts and calibration discs. Used impressers are available from £275.

The One Stop Surveyors Shop! A Short Guide to using the Tramex Skipper Moisture Meter on GRP

Written by Nigel Clegg Introduction: Most people think of electronic moisture meters as specialist tools, which can only be by boatyards and yacht surveyors, but increasing numbers of private boat owners are finding them invaluable for examining their own boats. Contrary to popular belief, moisture meters are very easy to operate, and with regular use, owners can chart the condition of their boats from one season to the next, thereby avoiding nasty surprises. A moisture meter is also a good investment when buying a second-hand boat, and can be used to check over potential vessels before splashing out on survey fees.

However, moisture meters must be used in appropriate conditions if readings are to be reliable, as all too often, readings are excessively high because they're taken too quickly after lifting out, or because of bilge water or internal condensation. In this respect, private owners often have the advantage over surveyors, as they're able to take readings when it suits them, having first ensured that their boats are dry inside and out. The purpose of this document, therefore, is to provide practical guidance on how to use the Tramex Skipper and Skipper Plus meters on conventional glass reinforced polyester (GRP composite) boat hulls. For a more detailed explanation please refer to the authors Short Guide to Osmosis and its Treatment. Why Use a Moisture Meter? The object of taking moisture meter readings is to determine whether moisture is being absorbed and retained by the GRP composite. Persistently high moisture readings (i.e. high readings over a period of several weeks) may indicate the presence of ‘free’ hygroscopic solutes such as propylene glycol within the laminate; and accordingly may indicate an ‘Osmotic’ condition. The application of epoxy or polyurethane coatings is not recommended where moisture readings are high owing to the high risk of blistering. Electronic moisture meters provide a quick, accurate and non-destructive check for retained moisture. Nevertheless, these instruments are not foolproof, and they cannot discriminate between different types of water, so it will be seen that extraneous moisture must be eliminated if readings are to be valid.

However, like many parameters in the marine industry, currently accepted moisture readings are based upon many years of practical experience in the field. There is no direct correlation between moisture meter readings and the mechanical condition of laminates, but industry experience shows that the incidence of ‘Osmotic’ failures is much reduced if moisture meter readings are kept low. Nevertheless, the figures suggested here are not infallible, and some circumstances may require higher or lower readings. Preparation: Salt, marine fouling and slime will retain moisture, so the hull must be thoroughly pressure washed with plenty of fresh water, and allowed to become completely dry before any readings are taken. Ensure that the yacht is safely propped before working underneath her. The yachts bilges must be completely dry and well ventilated, as the Tramex meters will easily read through the hull. Avoid taking readings in damp, misty or humid conditions; and do not take readings at sub-zero temperatures as the conductivity of water drops rapidly as it freezes. Most boats built since the early 1990’s will be laid up with Isophthalic gel-coats and/or lay-up resins. These often show low readings after a few hours out of water; but this cannot be guaranteed. Older boats will usually be built with Orthophthalic resins, which can take several weeks to dry. Similarly, epoxy coatings such as International Gelshield and Blakes SFE200 can retain moisture for several weeks after lifting, and may result in high moisture readings during this time, (even if the laminate is perfectly dry).

Page 7: Catalogue and Price List

The One Stop Surveyors Shop! Contrary to popular belief, antifouling paints do not usually need to be removed before taking moisture readings. The only exceptions are electrically conductive coatings such Copperbott, and those boats with very heavy accumulations of antifouling. However, a surveyor will usually want to remove a few small ‘coupons’ of antifouling to examine the gel coat closely for signs of wicking, blistering or fibre swelling.

Using the Skipper and Skipper Plus meters. The electrodes on the Tramex meters are spaced 22 millimetres apart. This wide spacing gives the instrument a ‘depth of field’ of 25 millimetres or more, providing a very useful indication of overall moisture content. However, bilge water and internal condensation may also result in high readings!

The Skipper and Skipper Plus meters should be set to Range 2 for GRP, regardless of whether the vessel is kept in salt or fresh water. (Note: Range 1 on the Skipper Plus is calibrated for Teak. Range 3 can be used to check for surface moisture, or in applications where low sensitivity is required). Starting at either bow, take readings every 30 centimetres (12 inches) or so in a vertical line from the topsides down to the centreline. Repeat every 45 centimetres (18 inches) along the length of the hull to create a ‘grid’ pattern. Repeat the procedure on the opposite side, and on the transom if appropriate. If an osmosis prevention or treatment is required, readings must be lower than 14% H2O (i.e. ‘in the green’) on Range 2 before any epoxy materials are applied. The same readings are required when applying polyurethane finishes to topsides and superstructures, or when carrying out laminate repairs. For pre purchase surveys, (i.e. boats currently in service), readings up to 18% H2O (i.e. ‘in the green or the yellow’) on Range 2 are usually acceptable. Higher readings may indicate an increased risk of blistering, but these should be investigated to see whether they are caused by bilge water or internal fittings before suspecting an osmotic condition. High topsides readings indicate internal moisture or a laminate problem. If in doubt, fresh readings should be taken after a period ashore, having first ensured that the boat is internally dry and well ventilated. On single skinned hulls, readings may also be taken from inside the yacht to help establish whether high readings are caused by internal or external moisture, or by moisture in protective coatings.

General Notes: Moisture meter readings should always be taken from the ‘% H2O’ scale, and not the ‘Relative Scale’. The Relative Scale is designed for use with conversion tables supplied by the moisture meter manufacturer; therefore readings from this scale are meaningless and misleading without these tables. By convention, electronic moisture meters are calibrated for timber (usually Douglas Fir), so moisture readings are not directly applicable to GRP composites. The true moisture content of GRP is very approximately 10% of the value shown on both Tramex Skipper and Skipper Plus instruments when set to Range 2. Ribs, stringers, and bulkheads will often show locally high moisture readings on moisture meters, as moisture passing the hull tends to become trapped in these structures, and may cause localised breakdown. Moisture meters cannot be used on metals, encapsulated metal keels or on carbon fibre as these materials are electrically conductive.

As a general rule, if readings are unexpectedly high, fresh readings should be taken after a period ashore. Unusually low readings must be checked against a recently calibrated instrument. Finally, Osmosis is a very slow process, and high moisture readings do not always mean that blistering will occur within the next few months: indeed, many boats show high readings for ten years or more before the first blisters are seen.

The One Stop Surveyors Shop! Focus on Ultrasound for Metals and GRP

If you are serious about surveying metal boats, you’ll need an ultrasound gauge that can measure the thickness of metals through paintwork, and which is thoroughly reliable in boatyard conditions. Ultrasound works by directing high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) into the metal being tested. When the ultrasound waves hit the back wall of the metal they are reflected back to the ultrasound head. Ultrasound waves travel through different metals at known speeds, so the time taken for the waves to be reflected from the back wall can be computed to give an accurate measurement of thickness. There are many types of ultrasound gauge on the market, some of which are very attractively priced. However, most of the gauges from overseas have little or no after-sales service, whilst delivery can take several weeks. Moreover, few of them are capable of taking readings without removing the paint first! We have therefore settled on the Cygnus and Tritex range of ultrasound gauges, both of which are designed and built in the UK. Cygnus is a well established company, based in Dorchester, and has supplied ultrasound equipment into the marine industry for many years. Tritex is a relatively new company, set up by a team of experienced ultrasound engineers, who have built on existing technologies to produce some innovative new designs.

Both Cygnus and Tritex designs use a single crystal, multiple echo technique to provide reliable readings through paintwork and heavy rust, and come with extended guarantees. These gauges use the same interchangeable soft-faced ultrasound probes with user replaceable membranes for long life. After sales service from both companies is second to none, whilst pricing is competitive. We also stock approved Ultrasound Couplants for use with all ultrasound gauges (please see price list), and can supply spare parts, probes, membranes, and calibration pieces.

The One Stop Surveyors Shop! Moisture Meter Repair and Calibration

Whether you use your instruments to earn a living, or to care for your own pride and joy, you’ll want to keep them in full working order and properly calibrated.

Modern instruments like the Tramex Skipper Plus are extremely reliable in service, and should require little maintenance beyond occasional battery replacement. Careful circuit design with the use of CMOS technology, stabilised voltage rails and crystal-controlled oscillators means that re-calibration is rarely, if ever required. Nevertheless, we recommend that instruments be returned periodically for a calibration check. It’s also a good idea to check your meter occasionally against a hardwood or GRP reference piece kept in a dry place.

However, with constant use, the soft rubber electrodes on Tramex meters eventually lose their fine surface pattern, becoming worn and shiny like those in the picture below. This will noticeably reduce the instruments sensitivity to moisture. Similarly, the coaxial cables on older Sovereign meters can fail, whilst the scanning heads themselves will become worn. And of course meters can easily be damaged whilst in use, or even dropped into the water!

Thankfully, the majority of components can be quickly and economically replaced, restoring your meter to full working order – even if it is ten years old or more! And if you’re pushed for time, we can even provide a ‘Courtesy Meter’ for a small charge whilst yours is being fixed.

Whilst there are no formal ‘Standards’ as such for moisture meter calibration, we can undertake periodic re-calibration checks on your behalf, and will issue a manufacturers calibration certificate, valid for one year.
