Two Northern Songs op. 43/2
Slumber SongEdward MacDowell
HI-C6725
Edward MacDowell is considered to be the fi rst American-born internationally renowned composer. Admired greatly by Franz Liszt and close friends with Edvard Grieg, he continued the European music tradition of the 19th century, but still developed his own personal style. Both Northern Songs op. 43 The Brook (Helbling HI-C6724) and Slumber Song are his only a cappella works for mixed voices and are jewels of fi nely differentiated choral music. In Slumber Song MacDowell musically traces, in a poignant manner, how a child gently eases into a state of dreaming on an adult’s shoulder, while winter holds sway outside. In keeping with a lullaby, MacDowell has the lower three voices hum throughout the entire piece and with them builds up a fascinating harmonic foundation.

Vorwort
Preface
tete: Das 1881 gegründete Boston Symphony Orchestra etwa avan-
ge vom 3. 12. 1897 „for the purpose of singing not the ordinary
‘college songs’, but music of a high order“.
Worten zufolge viel Freude daran: „The Mendelssohn Glee Club is
good fun and the men act well and work for me like demons.“
Two Northern Songs op. 43 dient, MacDowells einzige Werke für
gemischten Chor a cappella.
diesen beiden, auf eigene Texte komponierten Stücken The Brook
(Das Bächlein, Helbling HI-C6724) op. 43/1 und Slumber Song
(Schlafl ied) op. 43/2, mit denen ihm wahre Juwelen fein differen-
zierter, kunstvoll geschaffener Chormusik gelangen.
neuen Gast schon erwartet.
dielinie an allen melodisch ähnlichen Phrasenenden (T. 15f, T. 23f,
Dies entspricht dem Text sinks to
Sopran kreisende melodische Figur immer wieder neu beleuchten.Dr. Michael Aschauer
Edward MacDowell was not only an outstanding pianist and, from
1896 onwards, a highly regarded music professor at Columbia
University in his native city of New York, but was also considered
to be the most distinguished composer of the United States in his
own lifetime. Today he is considered to be the fi rst American-born
internationally renowned composer. In 1876 he became the youngest
student of the famous Conservatoire at the age of 16; the years
1878–1888 that he spent in Germany shaped his further develop-
ment decisively. There he made the acquaintance of Franz Liszt who
was fascinated by MacDowell’s compositions not least due to the
latter’s individual personal style. Returning to the USA, he established
himself as a pianist and piano pedagogue in Boston where a rich
musical life awaited him: The Boston Symphony Orchestra, founded
in 1881, advanced within a short time to the most prominent
orchestra of the United States. With the exception of opera, MacDowell composed works of
all genres. He became involved with vocal music on a regular basis,
both as a composer and as a conductor, like Gary P. Wilson reports:
already in the second year of his appointment at Columbia University
he started a university choir, according to an announcement from
December 3, 1897 “for the purpose of singing not the ordinary
‘college songs’, but music of a high order“. In addition, he conducted
the Mendelssohn Glee Club in 1896–1898 and he was very pleased
with it in his own words: “The Mendelssohn Glee Club is good fun
and the men act well and work for me like demons.“ In three times
two successive concerts per year he performed with this men’s choir
mostly works by contemporary European and American compo-
sers and wrote a number of pieces for it as well. As he described
to his student John Erskine, the choir should sing in a “lyrical” and
“fl oating” manner – a sound ideal that serves as a helpful reference
in the interpretation of the Two Northern Songs op. 43, published
in 1891 and MacDowell’s only pieces for mixed choir a cappella. His
credo that “the poetic should be inspiration for the music and the
music, on the other hand, should be a commentary for the poetic”
(Marianne Betz) shows exemplarily in these two songs The Brook
(Helbling HI-C6724) op. 43/1 and Slumber Song op. 43/2, composed
on their own texts; with these he succeeded in composing true jewels
of fi nely differentiated, artistically created pieces.
Perhaps MacDowell was inspired to title his pieces Northern
Songs by his partiality for Norway and his friendship with Edvard
Grieg to whom the last two of his four piano sonatas are dedicated.
The designation of the title Slumber Song relates fi rst and foremost
to aspects with regard to the contents: That is to say, in the fi rst
part he paints a winter impression with cold, ice, snowfall and a
light northerly wind which enters, not in a menacing way, but rather
in a gently soothing manner. For this reason it is not diffi cult at all
for the young child to fall asleep on the adult’s shoulder and to slip
into a dreamland that is already waiting for the new guest. Not
only through the frequent, immediate alternation between F-sharp
Major and F-sharp minor – a characteristic throughout the entire
piece up to the coda – but also through the use of many more
distinctly inspired techniques, MacDowell succeeds in molding this
transition from awaking to a dreamy state and, at the same time,
assembling the wintery scene outside into sounds, thereby creating
a new entity. Fitting to a lullaby, he has the three lower voices
hum throughout the song and only the soprano performs the text,
whereby a fascinating sound background arises in the blending
with the original harmony – the central compositional feature in this
piece – and the continuance in the muted sphere. The insistent har-
monic progressions which are frequently the result of the chromatic
movement in the alto voice, the superimposition of various chords
and delayed tone progressions in the individual voices, on the other
hand, leave behind a somewhat austere impression that mirrors the
winter landscape. In addition, in expressive voice leading in bar 8 in
the bass line, MacDowell sets two fourth leaps in succession and in
a subtle way varies this melody line on all melodically similar phrase
endings (bar 15f, bar 23f, bar 31f). In a fi ne execution he decreases
the second fourth leap to a third in the last appearance in this fi nal
phrase, which results in a gentler D7 chord at the last entrance of
the principal theme. This corresponds to the text sinks to rest at this
point as well as the previous (bar 29f) mild harmonic and melodic
swaying to F-sharp minor (additionally emphasised by the doubling
of the minor third a) and the subsequent sudden brightening into
the corresponding major key. Furthermore, to be emphasised – as
a result of the multifaceted rhythmic elements (common eighths,
dotted rhythms, triplets within two bars) and unexpected twists
and turns in the melody – is the remarkably catchy principal theme
as well as the bold modulation starting at bar 25; this makes the
smouldering of the pine logs palpable and likewise should be pre-
cisely articulated just as the harmonic change in bar 13f, which time
and again illuminates the circling melodic fi gure in the soprano.Dr. Michael AschauerEnglish translation: Constance Stöhs

In its content, this moving and festive oratorio presents the Prologue of the Gospel according to St. John in relation to the maturing of humanity in faith. The work portrays, in the sense of a creation story, the path that leads from earthly striving and doubt to religious enlightenment.
The music is characterised by a sensitive setting of the `Word`, by powerful melodies and colourful harmonies, and by the optimism of religious faith.
The 11 choral parts are mainly based on psalms. The messages of the choral compositions are musically intensified by soprano and baritone solos. The self-contained character of the choral parts enables them also to be performed individually, both in religious services and in sacred concerts.
The recitatives are sung by the soloists with organ accompa-niment (baritone = Prologue of St John’s Gospel, soprano = associative thoughts on the text of the Prologue) or, optionally, can be declaimed by two narrators. The recitatives are introduced by a solo violin, arco or pizzicato.
The instrumental accompaniment by string orchestra (violin 1, violin 2, viola/violin 3, violoncello, double bass) and/or organ lends the work a classical festive radiance.

There is a Light Oratorio with Christmas songs, spirituals, folk songs and texts based on St. Luke’s Gospel
This easy-to-sing, moving, yet at the same time groovy work combines the Christmas story as told in St. Luke’s Gospel with Christmas songs, spirituals and folk songs. It can be sung with great flexibility in the spirit of an oratorio.
The work permits two different performance variants:
* An interpretation of the “basic edition” for choir a cappella, soli and narrator
** “Enriched oratorio edition” for mixed choir SATB, soli and piano, with recitatives for baritone solo (optionally spoken by a narrator with piano accompaniment)
** There is a Light: Enriched oratorio edition – vocal-instrumentalfor mixed choir SATB, soli and piano, with recitatives for baritone or alto solo (optionally spoken by a narrator with piano accompaniment)Duration: about 45 minutes.
This edition enables the work to be performed as an oratorio for choir, soli and piano, with recitatives for a baritone (or alto) solo. Alternatively, the recitatives can also be freely declaimed by a narrator to a piano accompaniment (this option can be heard in the complete CD recording). In the enriched oratorio edition, the choral sections have been arranged as varied strophic songs. The chord names given in the piano accompaniment also make a band accompaniment (e.g. piano/bass/percussion) possible.

* There is a Light: Basic edition – a cappellafor choir, soli and narratorDuration: about 35 minutes.
This edition provides all of the choral pieces as easy-to-sing strophic songs, each introduced by solo passages. Between the choral sections, the Christmas story from St Luke’s Gospel is freely declaimed by a narrator. The distinctive compositional concept also provides the option of combining different choirs (mixed choir, treble choir, male-voice choir) together in a single, joint performance. The naming of the chords throughout indicates the possibility of a free chord accompaniment, for example on piano or guitar. For pianists, it is also easily possible to take the corresponding passages of the piano accompaniment and the accompaniment for the spoken texts of the narrator from the enriched oratorio edition.

Missa LumenLatin Mass for mixed choir SATB a cappella and soli, optionally with string orchestra and/or organ
This new ”Mass of Light” is characterised by a special tonal language. An expressive archaic vocal style is combined with a solemn classical charm and slightly popular nuances. The light of the human quest, of the assurance of faith and divine eternal joy form the message of the Missa Lumen – a Mass that moves performers and the audience alike. With its scope for variant performances, the Missa Lumen is a versatile choral repertoire item for the annual calendar of church music: vocal-instrumental or a cappella.

Missa de AnimaLatin Mass for mixed choir SATB, Baritone solo, a cappella or with organ, optionally with drum(s) or stomps
A strong, rhythmic pulse and powerful archaic vocals characterise the music of this new Latin “Mass of the soul, of the spirit and of life”. In a lively and colourful kaleidoscope of harmony, modern and mediaeval sounding musical tones combine in a festive Mass with a special radiance. Optionally, the rhythmic, pulsating cha-racter can be underscored by a percussive drum accompaniment or with stomps (stamped rhythms or rhythms played percussively with a variety of objects). A youthful and refreshing new repertoire work for religious services and concerts.

Missa Harmonia MundiMass for mixed choir SATB a cappella, optionally with organ and 2 trumpets and/or strings
The motto of this Mass is: many tongues – one Christian faith! For this, the Latin text of each of the parts SAT combines with a living language (German, English or Spanish) sung by the independently borne bass voice. This festive work is relatively easy to sing. Optio-nally the Mass can be accompanied with strings and/or organ. This formation can be expanded with 2 trumpets. The brass parts can also accompany the choral singing together with the organ. The TTBB edition of this Mass can be accompanied with organ and, optionally, with 2 trumpets.
Contents: In nomine / In the Name – Kyrie eleison / Have mercy – Laudamus Dominum / Glory to the Lord – Cantemus Halleluja / Let’s sing Hallelujah – Offerimus / We offer – Sanctus / Holy – Agnus Dei / Lamb of God – Corpus Domini / Lord Jesus’ Body – Jubilate / Be joyful

Missa Jubilate DeoLatin Mass mixed choir SATB a cappella, optionally with organ and/or strings
In its form and style, the short Latin Missa Jubilate Deo follows in the tradition of classical church music. Alongside powerfully simple and in many cases insistently expressive moments, effective fugato passages and splendid unisons create a highly festive atmosphere. The singing parts are supported by an organ and/or string (ad lib) accompaniment, thus ensuring that the sound has a festive effect. Because of its cantabile conception, its clear structure and the un-complicated nature of its harmonies, this Mass is also highly suited to the needs of less experienced singers and small church choirs, and can be performed on a wide variety of occasions.

Missa anima integraLatin Mass for mixed choir SATB a cappella, optionally with organ and/or strings
This Latin Mass is marked by exceptionally rich and powerfully expressive melody and harmony. Radiant with joy, solemn and measured, insistent in lamentation, moving in contemplation, the Mass speaks directly to human emotions and reflects faith, trust, hope and a zest for life. The optional, easy-to-perform organ and/or string (colla parte) accompaniment offers an additional perfor-mance alternative, provides support for the vocal parts and lends the Mass an added festive splendour. The clarity of form, tonal disposition, moderate proportion, logical part-writing and balanced ambitus of the voices make this Mass easy for even small church choirs to sing on a variety of occasions.

Missa Classica (In honorem Sancti Leonardi)Latin Mass for mixed choir SATB, soli SATB, with organ and strings, optionally with brass ensemble and timpani
Both in form and in style, this composition takes as its point of reference the great tradition of classical church music. In line with current practice in church music, there is no setting of the creed. With the festive splendour of its sound, the Missa Classica is especially suitable for the major festivals of the church year. At the same time, care has been taken to ensure that the Mass can also be easily managed by amateur choirs. The choral part is easy to sing, and the solos can also be handled by capable choral singers. For the performance, two different instrumental formations are possible: either with strings and organ only, or with, in addition, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns and timpani.

Missa „Lux caelestis“Latin Mass for Mixed Choir and Soprano Solo (Percussion ad lib)
With its extensive structure, this Missa “Lux caelestis” by Franz M. Herzog follows in the tradition of the great settings of the Mass. It is characterised by an outstandingly vivid musical language, which pre-sents both concert and chamber choirs with a stimulating challenge. All sections of the Mass can also be performed independently of one another. The treatment of the Kyrie text is outstanding for the atmospheric density of its musical language. Expressive melodic lines and terse rhythmic patterns are repeatedly combined in ways which are always new and vividly convey the messages of the text to the audience. Equally emphatic is the way in which Herzog fashions the Gloria, the climax of which is an intense and powerful soprano solo (Lux caele-stis). Following on musically from the first two sections, long passa-ges of the Credo present themselves in highly rhythmical form and fascinate the listener by the subtlety with which the credo intonation is handled and by organ points, powerful melodies, a powerfully dra-matic Crucifixus and expressive harmonic flows. Herzog juxtaposes the largely calm and smoothly flowing Sanctus with a livelier Hosan-na in excelsis. The closing Agnus Dei with its marching 5/4 time is in-itially imbued with a solemn mood, but closes in complete accordance with the text with a peaceful Dona nobis pacem.

MissaLux caelestis
Latin Mass for Mixed Choir and Soprano Solo(Percussion ad lib)
With its extensive structure, this Missa “Lux caelestis” by Franz M. Herzog follows in the tradition of the great settings of the Mass. It is characterised by an outstandingly vivid musical language, which presents both concert and chamber choirs with a stimulating challenge. All sections of the Mass can also be per-formed independently of one another and are available separately in the Chorus XXI series. The treatment of the Kyrie text is outstanding for the atmospheric density of its musical language. Expressive melodic lines and terse rhythmic patterns are repeatedly combined in ways which are always new and vividly convey the messages of the text to the audience. Equally emphatic is the way in which Herzog fashions the Gloria, the climax of which is an intense and powerful soprano solo (Lux caelestis). Following on musically from the first two sections, long passages of the Credo present themselves in highly rhythmical form and fascinate the listener by the subtlety with which the credo intonation is handled and by organ points, power-ful melodies, a powerfully dramatic Crucifixus and expressive harmonic flows. Herzog juxtaposes the largely calm and smoothly flowing Sanctus with a livelier Hosanna in excelsis. The closing Agnus Dei with its marching 5/4 time is initially imbued with a solemn mood, but closes in complete accordance with the text with a peaceful Dona nobis pacem.

Missa Sanctissima TrinitatisLatin Mass for mixed choir SATB and organ (strings, clarinets ad lib)
The Latin Mass Missa Sanctissima Trinitatis is orientated on the tradition of classical church music. The mostly homophonic style of the choral arrangement impres-ses especially with a powerful, diversified harmony, but also with deeply felt, expressive melodies. The choir is accompanied by the organ as well as (ad lib) by two violins and a violoncello. Two ad-ditional clarinets in Bb that skilfully weave around the voices offer a further alternative for performance.A versatile, poignant Mass not least due to the different options in the instrumentation that dignifies the Holy days of the Church year with its profound, and at the same time, joyously radiant musical language.

The Latin Jazz MassMass for mixed choir, jazz trio and saxophone ad lib
With his Latin Jazz Mass Martin Völlinger presents a rousing, mul-tifaceted work, which is equally suited for religious services as well as in concert. This Mass, multifaceted in compositional technique and musicality and characterized by emotions such as joy, trust, hope and happiness, not only enthralls the listener by means of the detailed interpretation of the texts, but also by its combination of various rhythms and styles – from salsa, samba, bossa nova, rum-ba, tango and gospel to pop ballads and funk. Diversified grooves, catchy characteristic melodies, sophisticated harmony, improvisati-onal elements, solo passages, a diversified choral and instrumental part-writing as well as an abundant formal richness appeal to a large audience. Furthermore, the choral setting is characterized by a well-balanced range and logical part-writing. A new highlight!

5 spiritualsVariable arrangements for choir SA/SSA or SAB/SATB and piano, optionally with instrumental accompaniment
There is still no end to the fascination exercised by the performances of the large numbers of gospel choirs, and after the concerts and religious services, the streets everywhere are full of enthusiastic audiences swinging their way home, still stirred by the power of the gospel songs and spirituals. So it goes without saying that the FlexiChoir series would not be complete without the inclusion of spirituals. The arrangements are varied and groovy, and will get that crucial feeling going in both the singers and the audience.

Lovers of folk music rate Irish folk right at the top of the popularity scale. Ire-land is after all a country with an inexhaustible variety of ballads, love songs, melancholy songs of home and, of course, drinking songs. The FlexiChoir series offers you a small crosssection from the Irish folk music repertoire. The songs provide living proof that Irish music, too, can sound absolutely authen-tic when sung by a choir.

5 songs from dixielandVariable arrangements for choir SA/SSA or SAB/SATB and piano, optionally with instrumental accompaniment
This collection relies heavily on the music of Stephen Foster (1826–64) and fea-tures three of the best known - Some Folks, Camptown Races and Oh! Susanna! They have been freely arranged with an emphasis on rhythmic drive and inte-resting (but playable!) piano/keyboard parts. Polly Wolly Doodle was mot written by Foster but by that even more prolific composer Anonymous. Another 19th century songwriter associated with minstrel shows was Dan Emmett. He wrote what is probably the best-known song to have emerged from minstrelsy. Dixie tells the story of the freed black slave nostalgic for the Dixieland of his birth.

5 continents–10 folksongs
GWYN ARCH
10 folksongs
This collection by Gwyn Arch of ten folksongs may be small, but fi ve continents are represented within these 76 pages and each continent by two songs.
From Mexico (South America) comes La Cucaracha (the cockroach), a Spanish language folksong with a memorable tune and Cielito Lindo which is treated by Mexicans as a sort of alternative national anthem. The African continent is represented by a song from Tanzania – Malaika, and another from West Africa rejoicing in the title Jikela emaweni sia hamba. Both songs have been associated with the celebrated South African singer and civil rights activist Miriam Makeba, and new lyrics (in English) have been contributed by Stuart Smith. In Russia (Europe) folk music is closely connected with village life and traditions. Kalinka is a young man’s daydream under a pine tree, while The little birch tree was a symbol of beauty in Soviet Russia. The fourth continent is Asia. If there is one Jewish song known by Jews and non-Jews alike, it has to be Hava Nagilah. Tum Balalaika is also Yiddish traditional but it’s of Russian Jewish origin. The Folkmusic of the Maori of New Zealand (Oceania) is mostly associated with war chants called Haka, but Hine e Hine and Pokarekare Ana reveal the infl uence of mid-19th century British settlers.

Many of the arias in this collection are part of the standard reper-toire of renowned soloists, and it is really through them that the operas to which they belong have become famous. This is und-oubtedly true of arias such as Lascia ch’io pianga, Ombra mai fu and Caro mio ben. Gwyn Arch has now created new arrangements of these and further works by Handel, Mozart, Verdi and other composers, and thus opened up this musical genre to a whole new public. The piano accompaniments are largely oriented towards the originals.

In Namibia, singing is ever-present wherever you go. People sing almost everywhere, at work, at celebrations, as a way of expressing joy or sorrow, or as a means of passing on traditional stories by word of mouth. The songs in this collection are marvellously suitable for part singing without piano accompaniment, both for experienced choirs and for unpractised “not-yet singers”. The colourful melodies and the simple but lively arrangements can be learned within a very short time and then performed immediately, for example as a creative contribution to a religious service. At the same time, the musical material is so rich in content that imaginative choirs can develop it into rousing concert pieces. They will find the CD by the UNAM Choir a rich source of ideas.

These 13 folk songs are designed for female choirs and treble voices of all ages, who enjoy re-capturing the spirit and beauty of these traditional melodies from Britain and Ireland, and are a “must” for those looking for new, but traditional repertoire. They are set in two and three vocal parts and are in a range of difficulty from “easy” to “advanced”. As a result, there are many within the 13 that are within reach of most choirs who enjoy working without any instrumental accompaniment, in the tradition of folk songs. However, chord symbols have been added to every one of these skilful arrangements in order to cater for those choirs who enjoy some improvised instrumental support by guitar or piano in performance.

Warm-ups for voice & body25 canonic songs and chants for choir, classroom and stage
Warm-ups are small pieces with great effect – ideal for many situations where people sing together in groups. Canonic structures and pattern accompani-ments such as small bass parts, rhythmic accompani-ments with vocussion or percussion, and background vocals permit great diversity in the arrangement of the pieces for a broad range of levels of difficulty.
These 25 short, easy-to-sing pieces motivate people to sing in a variety of ways. For each of the warm-ups there are specific hints and tips on how to use them in music and choir teaching: “body & voice”, “rhythm & movement” or “performance”. Whether as a rhythmic rap number with Vocussion, as a canon with choreographed movement, or as a creative musical piece, the warm-ups can also be performed very effectively on stage. The CD supplied with the sheet music offers recordings of all pieces.

21Critical First Editions – Anselm Hüttenbrenner (1794–1868)
First editions of sacred and secular part songsfor four male voices TTBB a cappella, edited by Michael Aschauer
New discoveries for male-voice choirs!Anselm Hüttenbrenner (1794–1868)
Anselm Hüttenbrenner, a friend and fellow student of Franz Schubert, left an impressive oeuvre of part songs. Influenced initially by Schubert’s work, he developed an independent musical language of extraordinary quality and of great diversity of style and content.
As a composer, pianist, music critic and Artistic Director of the Styrian Musical Society in Graz / Austria, he numbered the most eminent composers of his day among his friends and acquaintances: He visited Ludwig van Beethoven on his deathbed and was present when he died, and Franz Schubert was a friend and fellow student. However, it is not because of that, but because of the high quality of his musical work that Hüttenbrenner deserves to be rescued from oblivion. His teacher, Antonio Salieri, recognised his “exceptional aptitude for vocal composition” – how correct he was in his judgment is impressively demonstrated by, among other works, the choral pieces for male voices, almost all of which were composed between the founding of the Graz Male-Voice Choral Society in 1846 and the autumn of 1847. Easy to sing and with great variety in both their music and their content, Hüttenbrenner’s compositions for four male voices TTBB a cappella provide a highly attractive addition to the repertoire for dedicated amateur choirs as well.
For the first time a representative selection of Hüttenbrenner’s choral works has been made available to the public in an academically rigorous, while at the same time practically oriented first edition in five volumes. Each volume contains a detailed preface, a critical report, a piano part for rehearsals and an English translation of all accompanying texts and of the lyrics of all the part songs.
n Secular part songs (HI-C6251, see page 32) His Secular part songs, which sing of springtime, singing, love, hiking, hunting and drinking, but which also include
contemplative themes, create, in musical terms also, a highly diverse set of moods: lyrical sensitivity, the dance-like lightness of the folk song, sparkling vitality and powerful, festive radiance. The subtle musical setting of Goethe’s poem Nähe der [!] Geliebten (When My Beloved is Near) displays great sensitivity, while the words Seid umschlungen, Millionen (Let Me Embrace You, You Millions), which Beethoven used in his 9th Symphony, are heard in new musical dress!
n Proverb settings (HI-C6250, see page 33) His Proverb settings – many of them, as tradition has it, composed in his head on the way home from the “Löwenwirt”
(The Lion tavern), which Hüttenbrenner regularly frequented with his friends – form a particularly original and humorous part of his choral works. Proverbs such as Aller Anfang ist schwer (The first step is always the most difficult), Einen Kuss in Ehren kann niemand wehren (A kiss with honourable intent cannot be denied), Im Dunkeln ist gut munkeln (Darkness is the friend of thieves and lovers), Besser ein Räuscherl als ein Fieber (One over the eight is better than a cold in the head) – composed on New Year’s Day 1847! – Der Krug geht so lange zum Brunnen, bis er bricht (One of these days you’ll come unstuck), or Ende gut, alles gut (All’s well that ends well) have been wittily rendered into entertaining choral compositions.
n Sacred part songs I, II, III (HI-C6252, HI-C6253; HI-C6254, see page 34, 35) Having spent two years of his youth as a novice in the Cistercian monastery of Rein in Styria, Hüttenbrenner pursued
a lifelong interest in matters of religious philosophy, something which is reflected in his profound sacred a-cappella part songs. The great majority of these are based on short passages from the Bible, which he repeats several times, with new musical interpretations. These compact and powerfully expressive pieces are characterised by fascinating harmonic progressions, and create a bridge between Schubert and Anton Bruckner.

Secular choral music for four mixed voices SATB a cappellaas complete edition in two volumes, edited by Michael Aschauer
New discoveries for mixed-voice choirs!Robert Fuchs (1847–1927)
Robert Fuchs© By courtesy of the Austrian National
Library Vienna
Robert Fuchs was a highly respected professor of Harmony, Counterpoint and Composition at the Vienna Conservatory. His students included such renowned personalities from the world of composition as Hugo Wolf, Gustav Mahler, Alexander von Zemlinsky, Franz Schreker and Jean Sibelius. Johannes Brahms, who was often highly critical in his judgment of new musical works, held Fuchs’s compositions in high regard, and on several occasions lent him vigorous support. The choral works for four mixed voices, which revolve around the themes of Nature and love, are characterized by haunting melodies which on occasion are reminiscent of Franz Schubert, and a sophisticated compositional technique. The somewhat inward looking musical language, with its highly skilful handling of detail, reveals the sensitive nature of the composer. A thoroughly rewarding discovery for chamber choirs and dedicated amateur choirs with a taste for Romantic choral music.
