In 2011, our city of Art and History emergesfitted with new flagship facilities whereasin 2012, this rich cultural heritage will em-bark upon a more enriched journey andtruly… out of the common !

Go out Gare Sud side to enjoy a first view-point on the Canal Saint-Félix and on this peaceful little marina, sheltered from the tumult of the Loire river. A first unusual vision: trees growing in some of the boats ! Aproposal from Fabrice Hyber, a reflection onthe place of nature and of its mutations.A few meters away, you can see the colouredand richly decorated dome of the LU Tower.Keep it in focus: this is le lieu unique, yournext destination. By pushing open the doorof these old Lefèvre-Utile biscuit factories, discover the most atypical national stage inFrance. You will have access to plenty of opportunities: enjoy a drink at the bar, stop atthe bookshop, visit the contemporary artexhibition in the Courtyard, that used tohouse the production workshops of La Pailled’Or, relax in the hammam or enjoy a firstview over Nantes from the top of its Tower. After leaving, cross the canal, under thisbridge, the water looks still but if you comeback by nightfall, you’ll get an unusual sightthanks to Nymphéa, an artwork by AngeLeccia, belonging to the cultural tour EstuaireNantes <> Saint-Nazaire. A young woman, anymph or a mermaid, quietly moving in anaquatic environment: the creature seems tobe imprisoned by the tunnel, her body seemsto disappear in the inhospitable narrow pas-sage. The light of the projection plays on themoving surface of the water, a quite percep-tible homage to Claude Monet’s painting

experiments. This water sprite is personifiedby Laetitia Casta, a worshipped icon of oursociety, that has become here a mythical andcontemporary nymph.

Then go back towards the cours Saint-Pierreand push open the door of the Chapelle del’Oratoire. This beautiful desecrated building, with a wooden arch evoking the hull of aship, is an annex of the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Fine Arts museum) and houses tempo-rary exhibitions.Right in front the St Peter ’s and St Paul’s Ca-thedral, whose construction lasted 457 years,is standing in front of your eyes. Fall underthe spell of the clarity of this monument, remarkable for a number of reasons, from itsflamboyant gothic style, to its arches higherthan those of Notre-Dame-de-Paris (37,5 m),or to the masterpieces confined in its naves…

A few steps away, while the cobblestones foretell the medieval district, cross over thedrawbridge of the Château des ducs de Bretagne (the castle of the Dukes of Britanny)and discover Duchesse Anne’s residence.Fully restored, this fortified castle confines allthe architectural refinement of the court ofBritanny. It is the opportunity to visit themusée d’histoire de Nantes (museum of theHistory of Nantes) with the very contemporaryscenography, or, from the battlements, ask“Anne whether she can see anything coming”.

Then lose yourself in the pedestrian streets ofthe Bouffay district. Depending on yourcourse, you can go past timbered houses, theremains of an old Renaissance chimney onthe side of a building, the metal belfry with a

crown of angels blowing the trumpet at thefour cardinal points of Eglise Sainte-Croix(the Sainte-Croix church). A crossroads, anarea to stroll, to go shopping, the districtswarms with a permanent crowd and at nightchanges into a festive spot.

While crossing the Cours-des-50-otages toreach « the other city centre » – the one of theQuartier Graslin (Graslin district), namedafter its developer, that even if it was hit bythe bombings of the last global conflict, it remains one of the finest example of urbanplanning of the XVIIIth and the XIXth centuries– first look up to the Tour de Bretagne… Andwho knows, the boldest ones will be able toenjoy a 360° view on the urban communityof Nantes, perched on the 32nd floor, 150meters above the floor of the inhabitants ofNantes.

Come back down to earth for a shopping « àla nantaise » by crossing the Place Royalewhose fountain is reminiscent of the fact thatNantes is a city on a river, then walk up thestairs of the Passage Pommeraye, this shop-ping arcade dating back from the XIXth

century: there are very few cities in Europethat can boast of having a covered passagewith such an architectural value. This peacehave inspired more than one artist, fromJacques Demy, the filmmaker (Lola, UneChambre en ville), to Tardi, the cartoonist(L’Histoire du soldat inconnu). It results in theCrébillon street where you can « Crébillo-nate » among the chic boutiques.

Up this street, enjoy a gourmet break at La Cigale, this Modern Style brasserie, registeredhistorical monument, offers at any time of theday a XXth century decorum as a lunch setting. The view from the terrace is also well worth avisit with a breathtaking view on the corin-thian columns of the Graslin Opera House.Open to the public, you will probably hear thelyrical outbursts of a diva or of an orchestra.

The musical notes ring out as far as the pea-ceful alley of the Cours Cambronne. The twinbuildings running alongside this publicsquare throw them back at each other mischievously. All of this doesn’t seem to bother the General, who, determined, gazingwhen he says: « the Guard dies but does notsurrender ». Make a detour via the NaturalHistory museum, one of the most importantin France in the number of specimens.Make your way to the Quai de la Fossethrough the small alleyways where, in formertimes, sailors used to enjoy themselves beforesailing back to faraway lands.

In this part of the city that opens up on theharbour, our slave-trading past resonates. Youcan share our work of collective memory byvisiting the Mémorial à l’abolition de l’escla-vage (Memorial museum dedicated to theAbolition of slavery) built by the artist KrzystofWodiczko and the architect Julian Bonder.

Cross the Loire river via the Anne de Bretagnebridge and leaning on the railing, take a moment to dream about the ocean (it’s not farfrom here !)… You can now discover the newdistrict of the Île de Nantes. Completely over-hauled for a few years, an urban planningprogramme on an amazingly large scale and

focused on energy has been developed there, where culture and creation are mixing withthe port, the industrial and the maritime heritage.

First of all stay in the realms of dreams and of the ocean, straddling one the animals ofLes Machines de l’île and of the Carrouseldes Mondes Marins (Merry-go-round of Marine Worlds). Why not going towards theStation Prouvé by Elephant ? This prototypeof a service station created in the sixties by thearchitect Jean Prouvé changes at night into amagic lantern, as an invitation to a still jour-ney and to a discovery of the artworksthrough an open air tour of Estuaire Nantes<> Saint-Nazaire.

Along the Loire River, compare yourself to theyellow Titan crane, discover the variousviewpoints offered by Les Anneaux by DanielBuren, Estuaire’s emblematic artwork. Conti-nue to the Hangar à bananes restored into asuccession of bars and of restaurants withtheir own various but original universe for adeserved break. The sight on Trentemoult, onthe estuary, and on the Chantenay district, will make you really want to go for a strollthere… This works out great, each of thesearea offers new facets that are essential foryour trip in Nantes !

Retrace your steps to discover more tho-roughly the contemporary architecture andthis changing area. Behind the naves of theElephant, La Fabrique appears suddenly, thenew pole for contemporary music and digitalart. Accross the street, and if it is dark, the art-work De temps en temps by François Morelletextends over 8 000 m2 of facade: red neons

(sun), white (clouds) or blue (rain) will forecastwith certainty the weather in four hours. While on the other side of the river you canthe Memorial stretching out, walk along thecontemporary architectures signed by thegreatest architects of our time and more par-ticularly the Courthouse designed by JeanNouvel, the Maison de l’avocat (Counselhouse), or again the incredible Manny buil-ding (from the nickname of the mammoth inthe movie “the Ice age”) of the Nantes agencyTetrarc to which two artworks of Estuaire arereacting with, to the new school of architec-ture of Nantes of Lacaton et Vassal. From itsterrace, its a new breathtaking vista that youwill discover and for those who’d rather take abreak, the peculiar sculpture and snack-barL’Absence designd by Atelier Van Lieshout iswaiting for you !

To finish off your visit, the district of the Feydeau Island links the Memorial to theChâteau des ducs de Bretagne thanks to a newheritage tour. Of the word « island », this areatoday only bears the name (around twentyyears were necessary for its filling) but thebuildings of the wealthy families of shipow-ners, put up on a sandy ground, have ignoredthese changes: they are leaning, creating avery peculiar optical effect ! Trimmed withmascarons (the head of animal, man orwoman placed on facades), equipped withwrought iron balconies, these residences illustrate with their pomp the whole dimen-sion of this commercial past. You can alsovisit the exhibition at the Temple du goût, atypical building dating back from the begin-ning of the XVIIIth century Baroque in style.

The Abolition of Slavery Memorial Museum (free admission)

Designed by the internationally renowned artist Krzystof Wodiczkoand by the architect Julian Bonder, this memorial museum wasconceived as an urban, a political and an art project. Bothunderground so as to evoke the holds of these dying places and alsoaerial to open the debate, this piece is unique in France. What a strangefeeling to wander under this waterfront at the same level of the LoireRiver in a luminous atmosphere and a particular soundscape.

Le Voyage à Nantes in 3 days: a suggestion for a stay

DAy 1

You will go back in time by striding the his-torical parts of the city of Nantes. Each stonetells the tumultuous and fascinating story ofthis city, as much about its connection to Bri-tanny as its opening up to the outside world. The opportunity to visit the cathedral andthe masterpiece confined in it, the Châteaudes ducs de Bretagne (Castle of the Dukes ofBritanny) will disclose the secrets of the citythrough its museum with a contemporaryscenography. Continue your visit with thetemporary exhibition and a viewpoint fromthe top of the battlements.Lunch break ? Many typical restaurants arewaiting for you. Strolling in the Bouffay dis-trict: timbered houses, remains of an old Renaissance chimney, belfry with a crown ofangels of the Sainte-Croix Church.A shopping escapade. There is a proper expression for this activity, appreciated by theinhabitants of the city: “to crebillonate”, fromthe name of the street (Crébillon) connectingthe Place Royale to the Place Graslin. Not farfrom there, you’ll be able to continue yourwindow shopping session in the Pommerayepassage, gallery enjoyed by surrealist artistsand filmmakers. In front of the Graslin operaHouse, our suggestion for dinner: La Cigale,Modern Style brasserie registered historicalmonument that offers at any time of the daya XXth century decorum as a lunch setting.

DAy 2

To excite your palate, start this day with theTalensac market. Standing as a true institu-tion in Nantes, this morning and daily mee-ting (except on Mondays) is inevitable. Tastethe local specialties: buckwheat galette withsalted butter, oysters, curé nantais cheese, garden products, greengrocers… A mixture oftastes, of smells and of colourful characters. On saturday mornings, you can also go tothe Petite Hollande market, more popularand focused on world’s products.A few steps away, the Abolition of SlaveryMemorial Museum, a monument unique inthe world built on the waterfront of the Loireriver. Built as a meditative trail, this work ofthe artist Krzysztof Wodiczko touches peo-ple’s conscience and encourages thought. Sail away and meet in Trentemoult thanks tothe Navibus, the Nantes Vaporetto. This for-mer fishing village is a real postcard: colouredfacades, charming alleyways and a fabulousview in the Loire estuary. A gentle way of lifewill gradually reach you as soon as you havelunch in this old open air café called La Civelle. At the edge of the waterfront, confront theinexorable flying of time with Le Pendule, an artwork of the Estuaire tour, signed RomanSigner.

In the afternoon, go back to the north bankfor a new adventure with the Great Elephant, the Machines gallery and the Merry-go-round of the Marine Worlds.Walk along waterfront up to the edge of the Île de Nantes district: heritage of the shipyard industry, artworks, contemporaryarchitectures redesign this changing area. The last building, the Hangar à bananesrehabilitated in various eating places, also offers an exhibition place for contemporary art.

To finish off this day enriched with discove-ries and with maritime emotions in a beauti-ful way, enter le lieu unique. This formerbiscuit factory changed into an atypical artcentre will offer you an eclectic evening in apeculiar atmosphere. Everything is possiblein this multiple place.

DAy 3

Go on a fascinating trip at the heart of art bet-ween Nantes and Saint-Nazaire along the60km of the Loire estuary that connectsthese two cities. This treasure was entrustedto artists who bring this territory to light bycreating contemporary artworks of exceptio-nal magnitude, fun and stunning! In Saint-Nazaire harbour, you can stroll around thisfortification, climb up to the roof to enjoy theview and find the viewpoint on Felice Varini’s artwork or Gilles Clément’s Jardindu Tiers-Paysage. Visit the Life’s exhibition.Stop by at Escal’Atlantic ! Unique in Europe, this site is based on some of the few presti-gious liners built in Saint-Nazaire and that recreates on an area of 3 500 m2 the spaces, the atmospheres, the luxury and the excessesof these legendary steamships and great liners. It gives a perfect illusion and the visitorbecomes a passenger just for the duration ofan imaginary cruise. Atmosphere, atmos-phere: choose your cabin, breathe up theocean breeze on the promenade deck, immerse into the heat and the sound of theengine room, enjoy a cocktail at the bar…To finish off this day, enjoy a quick swimunder the watchful of Monsieur Hulot on themythical beach of Saint-Marc-sur-mer !—Map of the trail : cf p. 4 and 21

FoodContrary to many other great French cities,Nantes cuisine is not typically characterizedthrough emblematic recipes.Of course, we will always have a respectfulthought for Clémence Lefeuvre and herwhite butter sauce and we will always treatourselves to a good Gâteau Nantais… but thecuisine “à la nantaise” is something else. Our cuisine is characterized by a singularspirit linked to its history, its geographical location and the figures that had an impacton it. This spirit is the one of the opening tothe world, of multiculturalism, of curiosity, oftravelling… This is without a doubt becauseNantes is at a crossroads between the sea andthe land, between the sweet and the savoury, the world of plants and the world of animals, between Britanny, Vendée and the Loire river. And also because Nantes, with its port tradi-tion, has been enriched by the flavours of theworld that the explorers and the navigators

have brought back over the centuries.Above all, the cuisine in Nantes remains atthe service of the local product because it isplentiful in its variety and in its quality. So,many chefs in Nantes serve this deliciousmaterial to sublimate it, to put it together, toassociate it and in that way to renew everydaya culinary repertoire always moving, but thatnever forgets the main thing which is taste.

Things to know:

The Muscadet sur LieAt the beginning of the century, our wine ma-kers were used to keeping the best barrel of thecrop to celebrate the important family events.Stored without racking, this “wedding barrel”gave the wine a special character: they weremore refreshing in the mouth and their bou-quet was more structured. The Muscadet « surLie » wines were just born. This is all about anatural technique, unique in the world.
