Description

The current transformer seriesKOFD is built according the dimen-sion standard DIN 42600, NarrowType. The standard giving dimen-sions for only the herein calledmedium size ABB Transmit also hasdeveloped a longer version to pro-vide more core space. The KOFD-series of transformers covers thecurrent range 15–3000 Amps for12–36 kV. The 13.8 kV and 17.5 kVversions have the same dimensionsas the 12 kV version.

KOFD transformers are available assingle ratio, primary reconnectibledouble ratio and secondary recon-nectible double ratio (or multiratio)types.

Secondary wiring

The terminal box is metal with plastic cover and provided with two detachablethreaded inserts, size Pg. 16. Degree of protection is IP 30. The terminals areprovided with M5 screws for the termination of the secondary wiring and withthroughgoing holes for direct earthing of the secondary circuit by M6 screws.6 terminals can be supplied with this construction. Maximum 11 terminals withearthing bridges can be mounted when more than 6 terminals are required. Of these,9 pcs may be used as core secondary terminals. The terminal cover is sealable.

Environment

The ambient temperature range is from –5 oC to +40 oC (IEC recommendations).The transformers must be protected against unusually heavy deposits of dust orsimilar pollution, as well as against direct sunshine.

Use at high altitudes

In mountaineous areas the height above sea level may be higher than the heightspecified in the IEC standard as design criteria (= 1000 m). The thin air at highaltitudes affects the cooling of the transformers as well as the required creepage &free air distance to earth and between phases. The manufacturer should be con-sulted in such cases.

The problem with creepage and free air distance can be solved by choosing trans-former type designed for higher voltages. The requirement for impulse test voltge(BIL-level) should preferably NOT be higher than normal for the service voltage usedas this may have a negative effect on the available output from the secondaries.

The transformer specification can in such a case be for example:

The transformer type KOFD 17.5 D2 would have been suitable if used below1000 m.

Permissable torques for screw connections

Strenght class for the screws is 8.8. The length of the screw within the nut partshould be at least 1.4 x screw diameter.
