Das internationale Wissenschaftsfilmfestival in Thailand findet in diesem Jahr zum 8. Mal statt. Angefangen hat es als ein kleines Festival in Bangkok, das zunächst innerhalb Thailands wuchs. Seit 2009 ist es ein internationales Festival, das zeitgleich in 6 Ländern Südostasiens stattfindet (Indonesien, Kambodscha, Malaysia, Philippinen, Thailand. Vietnam). Im Jahr 2012 erreiche das Festival in allen Ländern zusammen über 238.000 Zuschauer, davon alleine in Thailand fast 140.000. Damit ist das Wissenschaftsfilmfestival das weltweit größte Festival dieser Art. Diese Zahlen sprechen sowohl für eine erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit aller an diesem Projekt beteiligten Partner, als auch für ein reges Interesse auf der Seite der jungen Lerner und ihrer Lehrer.

Im Jahr 2012 liegt der Schwerpunkt des Festivals auf dem Thema „Wasser“ und nimmt damit direkten Bezug zur UNESCO-Dekade „Water for Life 2005 – 2015“. Wasser ist existenziell für alles Leben auf unserem Planeten, aber Wasser ist auch oft Grund für Krisen, sei es durch die Natur selbst verursachte, wie etwa das Hochwasser in Thailand im vergangenen Jahr, sei es von Menschen verursachte, etwa durch unsachgemäßen Umgang mit dieser wertvollen Ressource. Die globale Bedeutung von Wasser findet sich auch in den UN-Millenniumzielen wieder und eine Vielzahl von Projekten wurde inzwischen implementiert, um bis 2015 die Zahl der Menschen, die noch keinen Zugang zu sauberem Trinkwasser haben, weltweit zu halbieren. Wie der deutsche Außenminister Guido Westerwelle im März diesen Jahres auf der Konferenz "Wasserdiplomatie in Zentralasien“ betonte, ist der weltweite sorgsame Umgang mit Wasser eine der zentralen politischen Zukunftsaufgaben: „Die erste Herausforderung ist der Wandel. Wir müssen uns auf große Veränderungen einstellen. Der Klima¬wandel wird zu höheren Temperaturen und gesteigerten Verdunstungsraten führen. Wie können wir weltweit den notwendigen Übergang zu einer nachhaltigen Wirtschaftsweise gestalten, um Armut zu bekämpfen und unsere Umweltressourcen zu schonen?“ Auch die Filmbeiträge des Wissenschaftsfilmfestivals werden sich diesem zentralen Thema widmen.

Aus den insgesamt eingereichten 111 Beiträgen, die aus 20 Ländern kamen, wählte eine Jury 24 Filme aus 10 Ländern aus, mit denen wir wiederum jungen Zuschauern zeigen wollen, dass Lernen auch unterhaltend sein kann. Die Beiträge sollen die heranwachsende Generation motivieren, sich verstärkt mit naturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen zu beschäftigen und vielleicht bei dem ein oder anderen auch einen entsprechenden Berufswunsch wecken. In diesem Sinne wünsche ich allen Zuschauern, jung und alt gleichermaßen, viel Spaß bei der neuen Ausgabe des Wissenschaftsfilmfestivals.

เทศกาลภาพยนตรวทยาศาสตรเพอการเรยนรแหงประเทศไทย ปนจดขนเปนปท 8 จากเทศกาลฯ เลกๆ ทถอก�าเนดขนเปนครงแรกในประเทศไทย (พ.ศ. 2548) จนกระทงไดเตบโตเปนเทศกาลภาพยนตรวทยาศาสตรนานาชาต ในป พ.ศ. 2552 มาจนถงปจจบน โดยมการจดเทศกาลฯ ขนในภมภาคเชยตะวนออกเฉยงใตรวม 6 ประเทศ ไดแก อนโดนเซย กมพชา มาเลเซย ฟลปปนส ไทย และเวยดนาม ในตนป พ.ศ. 2558 สถตผชมเทศกาลฯ ในหกประเทศดงกลาวสงถง 238.000 คน เฉพาะในประเทศไทยมผชมเทศกาลฯ จ�านวนเกอบ 140,000 คน เทศกาลภาพยนตรวทยาศาสตรเพอการเรยนรนานาชาตจงถอเปนเทศกาลฯ ทใหญทสดในโลกในบรรดาเทศกาลประเภทเดยวกน สถตผชมทสงขนทกปเปนเครองยนยนถงความส�าเรจในการผนกความรวมมอระหวางภาคหนสวนทงหลายในโครงการ และแสดงออกวาเทศกาลฯ นเปนทสนใจอยางยงของนกเรยน นกศกษา และครอาจารยทงหลาย

ในป พ.ศ. 2555 น เทศกาลฯไดหยบยกประเดน "น�า" ขนมาเปนหวขอส�าคญ ซงถอเปนการสนองรบมตและนโยบายขององคการสหประชาชาตวาดวยทศวรรษ "น�าเพอชวต พ.ศ. 2548 - 2558” น�าเปนปจจยส�าคญตอสงมชวตบนโลก ทวา น�ากกอใหเกดวกฤตและเปนสาเหตของภยพบต ไมวาจะเกดขนโดยธรรมชาต หรอเกดจากฝมอมนษยกตาม เชน อทกภยประเทศไทย พ.ศ. 2554 หรอ การใชทรพยากรน�าอนมคาอยางไมเหมาะสม นอกจากน สมชชาสหประชาชาตยงมยทธศาสตรทมงใหความส�าคญมากขนกบการจดสรรทรพยากรน�าอนจ�ากด โครงการตางๆ มากมายในนโยบาย "เปาหมายการพฒนาแหงสหสวรรษ (MDGs)“ ไดรบการผลกดนใหบรรลผลตามเปาหมายทก�าหนดไว ในอนทจะลดจ�านวนประชากรผเขาไมถงน�าสะอาดส�าหรบบรโภคอปโภคลงถงครงหนง ภายในป พ.ศ. 2558 ในสวนของสหพนธสาธารณรฐเยอรมน ดร. กโด เวสเตอรเวลเลอ รฐมนตรวาการกระทรวงการตางประเทศกไดเนนย�าถงประเดนน�าไวในการประชม "Wasserdiplomatie in Zentralasien" (น�า กบบทบาททางการทตในเอเชยกลาง) ทจดขนเมอเดอนมนาคม ศกน วาการบรหารจดการน�าอยางรอบคอบดวยจตส�านกทดเปนภารกจหลกในอนาคตของรฐบาล โดยทานไดกลาวไววา "ความเปลยนแปลงคอความทาทาย พวกเราตองเตรยมความพรอมในการรบมอกบการเปลยนแปลงครงใหญ" การเปลยนแปลงของภมอากาศของโลกสงผลใหโลกรอนขนและมอตราการระเหยของน�าทสงขน ค�าถามกคอวาพวกเราจะวางมาตรการในชวงเปลยนผานอยางไร ในอนทจะปทางไปสการพฒนาเศรษฐกจทยงยน เพอตอสกบความยากจน รวมทงเพอรกษาทรพยากรธรรมชาตและสงแวดลอมทวโลก ทงน เทศกาลภาพยนตรวทยาศาสตรในปนกมความมงหมายทจะรวมรณรงคประเดนส�าคญดงกลาวดวย

คณะกรรมการคดเลอกภาพยนตรไดเลอกสรรภาพยนตรคณภาพจ�านวน 24 เรอง จากทงหมด 111 เรอง ซงลวนเปนภาพยนตรทจะพสจนใหผชมรนเยาวเหนวาการเรยนรเปนสงทใหความบนเทงได และยงเปนแรงจงใจใหคนรนใหมรจกสงสยและตงค�าถาม อกทงกระตนความสนใจในการเลอกแนวทางการศกษาเพอวางเสนทางอาชพตอไป ขาพเจาขอใหผชมภาพยนตรทกทาน ทงผเยาวและผใหญ ไดรบความสนกสนานจากเทศกาลภาพยนตรวทยาศาสตรเพอการเรยนรครงลาสดน

As a national organization responsible for science education development in Thailand, it is our vision to be “an organization that drives the science, mathematics and technology education and raise Thai students’ knowledge and capability to international standards.” From our vision statement, the key components that inspire into a wide range of activities undertaken by the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST) throughout 40 years of establishment comprise “drive education”, “raise capability”, and “towards international standards”. Film is no doubt one of the most effective media - from raising awareness, cultivating knowledge to changing attitude and behavior. Merging the art of film with the aim of learning science can therefore be positively beneficial and influential. For IPST to take a leading role in initiating and supporting the Science Film Festival in Thailand since inception in 2005, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, the French Embassy, UNESCO and in 2010 with international countries especially ASEAN, is well in line our vision. Such collaboration results in many achievements. Positive feedback from our network of partner, particularly the 15 Science Centers for Education nationwide, and strong attendance of schools, teachers, students, parents and general public to the festival is a testament to the success of the film festival. Region-wide alone, the festival reached 119,463 viewers. The Science Film Festival has gone from strength to strength. In its 8th year this year, the film festival sets its theme on “Water for Life”, celebrating United Nation’s Declaration of the International Decade for Action on Water for Life 2005-2015. In view of the direct experience of major flood in Thailand last year, the theme of film festival this year can never be more relevant. It should serve to be educational and entertaining as well as a ‘wake up call’ for people in the society to better manage water for life sustainability, as aspired by the organizers.

On behalf of IPST, I would like to thank all benefactors of the Science Film Festival and everyone involved whose support helps realizing our vision of advancing science education.

สถาบนสงเสรมการสอนวทยาศาสตรและเทคโนโลย (สสวท.) ประกาศวสยทศนทจะเปน “องคกรทขบเคลอนการศกษาเพอใหนกเรยนไทยมความรความสามารถดานวทยาศาสตร คณตศาสตรและเทคโนโลยทดเทยมกบนานาชาต” จากวสยทศนดงกลาว จะเหนไดถงองคประกอบส�าคญทถายทอดเปนกจกรรมตางๆ ของสถาบน นบตงแตกอตงเมอ 40 ปทแลว นนคอ “ขบเคลอนการศกษา” “ความรความสามารถ” และ “ความทดเทยมกบนานาชาต” เปนทยอมรบกนวาภาพยนตรเปนสอทมประสทธภาพ ทงในแงของการสรางความตระหนก ใหสาระการเรยนร ไปจนถงเปลยนทศนคตของสงคมได การน�าศลปะของภาพยนตรมาผนวกกบเปาหมายทางการศกษาดานวทยาศาสตร จงไมอาจปฏเสธไดวา กอเกดประโยชนและทรงพลงอยางยง ดงนนการท สสวท. เขารวมเปนผรเรมและผสนบสนนหลกของไทย ในเทศกาลภาพยนตรวทยาศาสตรเพอการเรยนรนบตงแตเรมตนเมอป พ.ศ. 2548 รวมกบสถาบนเกอเธ สถานเอกอครราชทตฝรงเศส ยเนสโก และในป พ.ศ. 2553 ประเทศอนๆ โดยเฉพาะในภมภาคอาเซยนกไดเขารวมจดงานเทศกาลฯน นบไดวาสอดคลองอยางยงกบวสยทศนของ สสวท. ดงกลาวขางตน ความรวมมอดงกลาว กอเกดเปนผลส�าเรจหลายประการ ประจกษพยานแหงความส�าเรจเหนไดชดจากเสยงตอบรบเชงบวกของเครอขายพนธมตร โดยเฉพาะศนยวทยาศาสตรเพอการศกษา 15 แหงทวประเทศ ทใหความรวมมอกบ สสวท. ในการจดฉายภาพยนตรวทยาศาสตรใหผสนใจในสวนภมภาคไดมโอกาสเขาชม ตลอดจนสถาบนการศกษา โรงเรยน คร นกเรยน นสตนกศกษา ผปกครอง และประชาชนทวไปทสนใจเขารวมชมภาพยนตรใน เทศกาลฯ มจ�านวนเพมขนทกป จากความรวมมอดงกลาว ท�าใหเทศกาลภาพยนตรวทยาศาสตรครงลาสดเขาถงผชมในสวนภมภาคไดมากถง 119,463 คน ป พ.ศ. 2555 เปนปท 8 ของการจดเทศกาลภาพยนตรวทยาศาสตรเพอการเรยนร โดยมประเดนหลกของงานคอ Water for Life หรอน�าเพอชวต ซงสอดคลองกบการทองคการสหประชาชาตก�าหนดใหป พ.ศ. 2548-2558 เปนปทศวรรษสากลวาดวยน�าเพอชวต ประกอบกบอทกภยครงใหญทเกดขนในไทยเมอปทแลว เชอไดวาเนอหาของเทศกาลภาพยนตรในปนจะไดรบความสนใจ ใหความรและความบนเทง ตลอดจนกระตนเตอนคนในสงคมใหใสใจรวมกนบรหารจดการน�าเพอความยงยนของชวต สมดงเจตนารมณของผจดงานครงน

If we have electricity but no water, we cannot survive”, is the King’s speech, where His Majesty the King stresses the importance of water as the origin and important element of life and as an important life’s element for all creatures on this planet.

“Water” is not only the important element of life, but for humans it is also a part of cultures, traditions, innovations, including sports and recreations. Therefore, one can say that “water” is the origin and establishment of civilization.

It is gratifying that science film festival 2012 has emphasized on water issues to help in creating understanding and awareness of the importance of water via cinematography. I hope that the viewers will realized how important the natural resources are to all living creatures, which will bring change to the ways of thinking and behavior and together preserve our most valuable resource for the future.

Water is essential for life. Water is life. No living being on planet Earth can survive without it. Water is a prerequisite for human health and well-being as well as for the preservation of the environment. I am therefore delighted that this year’s theme of the ASEAN Science Film Festival is “WATER” - as through the power of cinematic art, people can approach and understand the different aspects of this vital liquid.

We each have to realize the contribution we can make to finding solutions for providing safe, clean water and sanitation for all worlds’ people. This is an urgent matter for human development and human dignity. However, four of every ten people in the world do not have access to even a simple pit latrine; and nearly two in ten have no source of safe drinking water. It is not acceptable that every year millions of people, most of them children under five years of age, die from diseases associated with inadequate water supply, sanitation, and hygiene. The need for water cooperation to be able to improving basic services and water management has been the reason for the United Nations to declare 2013 as the International Year of Water Cooperation. And this is why the Rio+20 summit on sustainable development that took place in June this year has reaffirmed the world’s commitment regarding the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation, to be progressively realized for all the world’s populations with full respect for national sovereignty. It has therefore highlighted the commitment to the 2005-2015 International Decade for Action "Water for Life" and the need to improve implementation of integrated water resources management.

We hope that the ASEAN Science Film Festival audience will leave with a renew understanding of this fundamental truth – that basic water and sanitation services and improved water management are crucial for sustainable development, environment and indispensable for human health and well-being.

It seems there are so many reasons to have water and sanitation at the top of the world's agenda -there is so much to do. But together we can do it. Together, we must manage our water better.

The following are the award categories of the Science Film Festival:

The Visual Effects AwardHonors the film that demonstrates the highest level of visual craftsman-ship through cinematography or animation. Moreover, the effects go beyond the aesthetic by serving an educational purpose. Scientific principles or processes are explained clearly and engagingly through the visual effects.

The Education AwardHonors the film that stands as an excellent example of science journalism intended for young audiences aged 6 - 12. Scientific explanations are presented with the cognitive level of young viewers in mind and the structure of the film reflects an effective audiovisual pedagogical approach.

The EcofilmprizeHonors the film that makes an exceptional effort to communicate

and proliferate environmental awareness. Ecological issues are discussed and explained clearly. The film inspires to care about nature and cultivates a sense of responsibility in that respect.

The Discovery AwardHonors the film that makes an outstanding effort to promote learning about science to the general public. The film generates interest and enthusiasm for science and knowledge acquisition. It provides an exemplary balance between education and entertainment of the highest quality.

The Science Life AwardHonors the film that most empathi-cally presents the positive influence science can have on individuals, society and the environment. Furthermore than present scientific findings, the film in this category demonstrates that science is one of the most consequential human activities for our future and that of our planet.

The Prize of the JuryHonors the film that makes a particularly strong impression on the jury. The fi lm delivers an emotional and intellectual resonance, which distinguishes it as an overall outstanding work of science journalism through film and television.

Sugar Episode / รายการ ไอ กอท อท! ตอน น�าตาลหวานเจยบThe jury awarded the film because amongst the educational films, this one fits well for the youngest audience aged around 6 - 12: it is short, funny, visually interesting, and interactive, while teaching clearly about the positive and negative aspects of sweets. It points out that we could enjoy sweetness by eating fruits. It is educative because it explains the process for getting sugar from the sugar cane. EcofilmprizeรางวลภาพยนตรเพอสงแวดลอมNo Coral, No Maldives / ไมมปะการงกไมมมลดฟส

The jury honors this film, which introduces another threat to the existence of the Maldives besides rising sea levels – the destruction of the coral reefs also directly affects these islands. After explaining the problem, the film shows that there is a solution if we get involved in solving it. Marine biologists and volunteers created a “metal frame” to be a vessel for new corals to propagate. is an independent filmmaker, film critic and film festival programmer. After graduating from USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles, California, U.S., he came back to Vietnam to work on his projects. He has contributed to the film industry in Vietnam by organizing workshop with famous Hollywood filmmakers for local filmmakers, such as 20th Century Fox’s ex-CEO Bill Mechanic, Hollywood director Phillip Noyce; he also co-founded two movie fan-based website Moviesboom and Yxine; writing blog about movies, filmmaking and journalism at phanxineblog.com; and producing the first online short film festival in Vietnam, YxineFF, to support the young filmmaker community in Vietnam.

is a French medical doctor, with speciality areas in “mother and child health” and” infectious diseases”. After working in South America and Africa, she worked in Cambodia in HIV-AIDS programs for pregnant women. She has also contributed to educative health programmes for RFO (French Broadcasting Overseas Network). Since September 2008 she is working in Bangkok as the director of the Institute for Research for the Development (IRD) in Thailand.

is the head of the Special Collections Section of the Filipina Division of the National Library of the Philippines (with classification - Librarian III). She started her career in public service last February 2002 as Librarian I at the same institution. With her educational background in Library and Information Science, she has been selected to represent the country and participate in various projects related to education, culture and arts. These projects include the Cultural Partnership Initiative Program by the Korea Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as well as the Science Film Festival by the Goethe-Institut among others.

With detective skills, he investigates exciting cases and finds answers to his questions. In this episode Fritz and his sister Suse inherit a real watermill. It becomes obvious that the mill is much more in need of repair than they thought. Nevertheless, Fritz starts to make plans on how to get the mill wheel to work again. But something seems wrong. Strange things are happening around the old mill, which obviously intends to get rid of Fritz and his sister. Someone might have a problem with their sudden appearance. While solving the puzzle, he finds out how electricity is generated from water and what the advantages and disadvantages of this alternative energy are.

This episode of the series “I Got It” explores the world of lighthouses. How do they work and who invented them are just some of the questions answered in this programme. “I Got It!” is the first and only regional TV edutainment magazine in ASEAN. The co-production project was initiated by the Goethe-Institut in cooperation with Radio Televisyen Brunei (Brunei), National Television Kampuchea (Cambodia), Televisi Republik Indonesi (Indonesia), Lao National Television (Laos), Radio Television Malaysia (Malaysia), MRTV-4 (Myanmar), ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. (Philippines), Thai PBS (Thailand) and Vietnam Television VTV 6 (Vietnam). The project aims to develop local expertise in the production of television knowledge formats for children.

Bio-methane is renewable, storable and versatile. It can make an important contribution to achieving the climate objectives. Bio-methane has the best life cycle assessments and is a controllable source of energy. It is readily available from fermentation facilities all year and can be fed into the existing, well-developed natural gas infrastructures. It can also be easily stored and transported to consumers – similar to natural gas. The federal German government has the goal of providing an annual bio-gas potential of 6 billion cubic meters by 2020 and 10 billion cubic meters of bio-methane until 2030 to feed this into the regular gas network.

In the light-hearted “Kurt’s Fine”, the Bavarian farmer Kurt Steininger explains his struggle with the problems many farmers faced at the beginning of the 21st century: not enough money for milk, the farm too small, his son preferring to study at a university and women weren’t interested in him anymore. Until he found out how to turn cow dung into gold!

“The Programme with the Mouse” is one of the most famous children’s programs in German TV. Starting in 1970 it was one of the first science television formats for children and is still running today every Sunday. Originally set up as a science show for children, it equally attracted an adult following. The target group is older pre-schoolers and younger elementary school students, but the television station WDR states that the average viewer age is around 40.

Perhaps in the future you will be able to read the newspaper while driving a car. Cars may not need a human driver who controls it and it will still be able to get to its destination in one piece. Even at full speed the car is able to brake in front of an obstacle in good time. Actually, it looks like a normal car – except for a small, round box on the roof. This short film presents a car with an autopilot function and explains how this system actually works.

“TRICKBOXX” is a weekly media magazine for kids. Reporter Juri discovers the world of media professionals and reports from animation studios, film sets or book publishers. Once a month, the programme informs audiences about the latest movies for kids. The second element of the series is the Trickbox itself, a system consisting of a digital camera, a reduced trick table and a monitor, which enables children to produce their own animated films. These films are then presented in the magazine. Both elements of the magazine support and shape the media competency of the young audience. In this episode, “TRICKBOXX” gets to the bottom of 3D films and what it really means. 3D is the possibility of being able to watch movies with a spatial dimension. So you have the impression that events taking place on the screen are in the same room as you are. The episode explores the technical tricks being used in “Vicky’s Road Trip” and moreover gives instructions on how to make your own short 3D film.

Over the last 50 million years, sea levels have varied considerably. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas that has a major effect on global temperatures. “Earth under Water” looks at the implications of extreme sea level rise in the next few decades and centuries. It explains the science behind the prediction of sea level rise, including evidence from the planet’s past. Based on the research findings of NASA astrobiologist Peter Ward, the film shows what happens if CO2 emissions are not kept in check over the next 100 to 300 years. Using archive footage and elaborate animations, a detailed and realistic picture is given of what is in store for humanity if sea levels continue to rise steadily. The faster that sea levels rise, the greater the danger for humanity.

This film provides not only a scientific disaster scenario, but also interviews experts and politicians and looks at possible engineering strategies to deal with sea level rise, including hyper dams and floating cities.

The Inn River is Central Europe’s largest tributary of the Danube. Along its sinuous length of 520 kilometres, it flows through Switzerland, Austrian Tyrol and Bavaria. Throughout the ages, the Inn has created legendary natural beauty and generated unique cultural regions. It has many faces: extensive gravel banks, picturesque sandy islets, and extensive wetlands and riparian forests. The source of the Inn lies in the Engadin valley, in the Swiss canton of Graubünden – a famously gorgeous landscape with local populations of ibex and ptarmigans.

In Tyrol and Bavaria, where the river finally empties into the Danube, beavers and European otters that take advantage of the Inn as a habitat can be watched. The film, however, also addresses the serious threats and concerns the river faces today: signs of massive human intervention are clearly apparent all along the Inn’s course, and the consequences are suffered by animal and plant life alike. Still, a journey along the Inn is a glorious expedition into natural history. And it proves that what the Inn was once called, still applies: the Green River in the Alps.

Without water, life would not exist. It is a prerequisite for all

human and economic development.

Yet today, nearly one billion people – about one in eight –

lack access to clean water. More than twice that many, 2.5

billion people, don’t have access to a toilet.

Global pressure on our freshwater resources is increasing,

mainly through changes to population and income levels,

resulting in growing demand for water-intensive products

such as meat, sugar and cotton.

Some of the key issues include infrastructure, pollution and

over-use. While it is expected that there could be a severe

water crisis by 2050, if water use is well managed, there can

be enough to meet the needs of people and nature.

Water Facts and Figures

• 780 million people lack access to an improved

water source; approximately one in nine people

• At least 1 in 3 Asians has no access to safe

drinking water, and at least 1 in 2 has no access

to sanitation.

• The water and sanitation crisis claims more lives

through disease than any war claims through

guns

• Women spend 200 million hours a day collecting

water

• Almost 3.5 million people die of water related

disease each year.

• Producing a fast food lunch--hamburger, french

fries, and a soft drink--uses 1500 gallons of water.

Agriculture

Of all human activities, agriculture has the biggest impact

on the environment. About 70 percent of all water is used

for agriculture.

Many wetlands are destroyed as they’re drained to make

way for farmland. Crop and livestock production also uses

a massive amount of water. Pesticides and fertilisers are a

problem too. They pollute and damage rivers, lakes and

wetlands, poisoning fish and other freshwater species.

Infrastructure

Water infrastructure is one of the major causes of freshwater

ecosystem degradation. It includes: dams, reservoirs,

that transport water to homes and fields, levees and dykes

for flood defence. There are over 45,000 large dams in the

world. Hundreds more are planned or under construction.

While water infrastructure does benefit society in many ways,

big engineering schemes can cause irreparable ecological

damage, harming habitats, fragmenting rivers systems, and

altering their natural flows.

Pollution

Water pollution is on the rise all over the world. Much of it

due to human activities - including run-off from agriculture

and mining, atmospheric emissions and industrial and

domestic waste water.

The pollution of the world’s rivers, lakes and wetlands has

a huge impact on the health of people, plants and animals.

In many places, there are so many pollutants that rivers

can’t dilute them, leaving river systems seriously degraded.

Asian rivers are the most polluted in the world, with three

times as many bacteria from human waste as the global

average. These rivers have 20 times more lead than those

of industrialized countries.

Rivers filled with waste water become centres for diseases,

cut the amount of safe water available for people to drink

and wash, and cost a lot to clean up.

Over-use

The amount of fresh water on Earth is finite, but our demand

for water keeps growing.

In many parts of the world people are already using too

much water for nature to cope - some of the world’s great

rivers no longer even reach the sea. Over-harvesting of fish

and other animals and plants is another serious problem.

Our freshwater ecosystems are in danger of becoming

unable to provide people with many vital goods and services.

Pressures on water resources will only intensify as the world’s

population swells to a projected nine billion people by 2050.

Living standards will also rise - along with demand for food,

energy and industrial output. This will make protecting rivers

even more challenging.

We know how to bring people clean water and improved

sanitation. We’re not waiting for a magic cure. And the

solutions are simple and cost-effective.

CGIAR & IUCN’s Work on Water

The CGIAR challenge program on Water and Food works to

redress some of the challenges by improving how water is

access, used and managed. It believes there are three ways

this can be done. First through sustainable intensification

of agriculture so more food is grown with less waer. Second

through improved ways to share the benefits of water

amongst different users. This means that big projects and

uses such as hydropower and industry are balanced with

the needs of farmers and the rural poor. Finally, there will

need to be political reform so that water is managed across

sectors (hydropower, agriculture, health) and countries since

most rivers cross national boundaries.

IUCN’s Water Programme brings together its extensive

network of IUCN Members, experts, government and private

sector partners to develop sustainable solutions to preserve

our water resources. From Asia’s Mekong River to Nigeria’s

Komadugu Yobe River and Tanzania’s Pangani River Basin,

IUCN works towards managing and protecting our water

reserves for the benefit of all. We help to create policies and

laws in which all users, rich and poor, urban and rural, have

a say in how their increasingly stressed waters are allocated,

managed and conserved.

The human body can’t survive without water. Nowhere else is our dependence on this particular compound as clear as it is in the Sahara. Thousands of years ago people actually lived here. They left behind magnificent rock art, which pictured the Sahara as a lush savannah landscape with elephants, giraffes and antelopes. Even crocodiles lived in what is now only dry desert sand. 6,000 years ago the water disappeared and with it so too did plants, animals and the unknown rock artists.

Our dependence on water hasn’t changed since the days of the Egyptians. However, experts predict that water as a resource is becoming increasingly important with rising world population. The wars of the future will no longer be waged for oil, some experts predict, but for water.

Christian Guyot‘s story is a striking demonstration of that. Severely hearing impaired since birth, he has become a renowned musician and has taught music in various academies. Based on this, the Music Instrument Museum of Brussels has started a new program for young deaf and hearing impaired people.

The ASEAN Science Film Festival 2011 was an officially associated event of the UN International Year of Forests and received an overwhelmingly positive response from audiences! It was organized in Cambodia for the third time with over 19.700 visitors, in Indonesia for the second time reaching 27.000 visitors, in Malaysia for the first time reaching 11.700, in the Philippines for the second time reaching 23.000 visitors and in Thailand for the seventh time with over 139.000 visitors. The total number for all ASEAN countries was 238,331 visitors in 2011!

The ASEAN Science Film Festival as a regional event takes place concurrently in all participating countries under a unified conceptual and organizational framework that allows for local adaption to maximize its effectiveness in each nation. All films are translated and synchronized into the national language to provide the greatest possible access.
