BACKGROUNDBACKGROUND

Urban Communities

• United States metropolitan areas, such as Atlanta, GA, have experienced enormous population and economic growth within the last century.

• The rapid expansion in the oldest part of U.S. urban areas led to placing these surface water channels in a network of underground pipes, known as the combined sewer systems, that was designed to keep the streets dry by collecting the water runoff as well as the domestic sewage.

Page 4: Catchment 1 Green Infrastructure Conceptual Plan

Proctor Creek

• Proctor Creek is a waterway that originates in downtown

Atlanta

• It flows through communities such as English Avenue, Vine

City, Atlanta University Center, Mozley Park, West

Highlands, Grove Park, Center Hill Park, Carey Park and

Bankhead neighborhoods, and many others.

Page 5: Catchment 1 Green Infrastructure Conceptual Plan

Proctor Creek

• The communities surrounding Proctor Creek

suffer from public health threats related to

flooding and disease causing organisms such

as viruses, bacteria, and protozoa, released

during sewer overflow discharges, especially

the communities at lower elevations.

Objective

To develop a conceptual plan reducing storm water

runoff from the Atlanta University Center

(Catchment 1) by utilizing green infrastructure to

capture 7.2 million gallons of storm water.

Page 16: Catchment 1 Green Infrastructure Conceptual Plan

Overall Study Area

The Atlanta University Center

is at higher elevation than

most of the communities in

the Proctor Creek Watershed.

By implementing Green

Infrastructure throughout the

AUC, there is the potential to

mitigate the amount of

stormwater runoff that impacts

nearby lower elevation

neighborhoods.

Page 17: Catchment 1 Green Infrastructure Conceptual Plan

Our Study Area

• Our conceptual plan focused on a particular catchment area entitled Catchment #1. It mainly encompasses:

- Clark Atlanta University (CAU)

- A few small areas of Morehouse College

- Parts of the community surrounding the Atlanta University Center (AUC)

Page 18: Catchment 1 Green Infrastructure Conceptual Plan

Methods/Fieldwork

1. Collected aerial maps of of Catchment #1

2. Interviewed facility management

3. Participated in meetings and fieldwork

Page 19: Catchment 1 Green Infrastructure Conceptual Plan

Methods/Fieldwork

4. Calculated surface area of buildings and open space to determine storm water runoff

5. Identified cistern locations

6. Selected green infrastructure to accomplish our objective of detaining 7.2 million gallons of storm water runoff.
