Reflection
Lent gives us a chance to do things differently – to "go to the desert." How can you make Lent a time for growing in faith?
What is the one area of your life which you most want to "reform" as you get ready to embrace the Gospel, what is it?

“The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days,
tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts,
and the angels ministered to him.
After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God:
‘This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand.
Repent, and believe in the gospel.’” Mark 1: 12-15

Annual Diocesan Appeal 2018 A collaboration in which every parish contributes to-ward the support of ministries and services rendered by our Diocese of San Jose. The Cathedral goal this year is $135,500. Each household taking part in the cam-paign helps the Cathedral parish reach its goal toward funding education, training and service to the faithful of our Diocese. If you have not received an information packet in the mail, we have them available in the church. If we achieve 100% participation, we will not only match but surpass last year’s success! Contribu-tions that surpass the goal are rebated to our parish di-rectly. You can make it happen!

The details throughout Mark’s ac-count of Jesus’ temptation in the de-sert are sparse. He tells us only that Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and that for 40 days he was tempted by Satan. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke relate that Satan
presented Jesus with three temptations, and that Jesus refused each one, quoting Scripture. Jesus’ temptation in the desert does not appear in John’s Gospel. Only the Gospels of Matthew and Mark report that angels ministered to Jesus at the end of his time in the desert. We are told by Mark that Jesus went into the desert immediately after his baptism by John the Baptist led by the Spirit. His public ministry in Galilee begins after his temptation in the desert. Mark makes a con-nection between the arrest of John the Baptist and the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Jesus’ preaching about the Kingdom of God is in continuity with the preach-ing of John the Baptist, but it is also something new: the Kingdom of God is beginning and the time of the fulfillment of God’s promises is here. That Jesus spent 40 days in the desert is significant. This recalls the 40 years that the Israelites wandered in the desert after being led from slavery in Egypt. The prophet Elijah also journeyed in the desert for 40 days and nights, making his way to Horeb, the mountain of God, where he was also attended to by an angel of the Lord. Re-membering the significance of these events, we also set aside 40 days for Lent. In Mark’s Gospel, the de-sert marks beginning of Jesus’ battle with Satan; the ultimate test will be in Jesus’ final hours on the cross. Similarly, our Lenten observances are only a start, a preparation for and a reinforcement of our ongoing struggle to resist the temptations we face in our lives. During Lent, we are led by the Holy Spirit to remem-ber the vows of Baptism in which we promised to re-ject sin and to follow Jesus. Just as Jesus was minis-tered to by the angels, God also supports us in our struggle against sin and temptation. We succeed be-cause Jesus conquered sin once and for all in his sav-ing death on the cross.

S aint of the Day Blessed John of Fiesole 1387—February 18, 1455
The patron of Christian artists was born around 1400 in a vil-lage overlooking Florence. He took up painting as a young boy and studied under the watchful eye of a local painting master. He joined the Dominicans at about age 20, taking the name Fra Giovanni. He eventually came to be known as Fra Angelico, perhaps a tribute to his own angelic qualities or maybe the devotional tone of his works.
He continued to study painting and perfect his own techniques, which included broad-brush strokes, vivid colors and gener-ous, lifelike figures. Michelange-lo once said of Fra Angelico: “One has to believe that this good monk has visited paradise and been allowed to choose his models there.” Whatever his sub-ject matter, Fra Angelico sought to generate feelings of religious devotion in response to his paint-ings. Among his most famous works are the Annunciation and Descent from the Cross as well as frescoes in the monas-tery of San Marco in Florence.
He also served in leadership positions within the Dominican Order. At one point, Pope Eugenius approached him about serving as archbishop of Florence. Fra Angelico declined, preferring a simpler life. He died in 1455.
Reflection The work of artists adds a wonderful dimension to life. With-out art our lives would be much depleted. Let us pray for art-ists today, especially those who can lift our hearts and minds to God.
Matching Gifts to the Cathedral
Did you know that many employers match charitable donations for their employees? In the past we have received matches from Apple, Texas Instruments and will be receiving one from Intel. If you aren’t sure whether or not your employer will match to a church we also have the San Jose Cathedral Foundation. The Foundation benefits the Office for Social Ministry, Arts and the preservation of the Cathedral and it has a different tax ID number. Most programs will require that we provide them with our 501(3) C tax documentation which we are happy to do. Please check with your employer. If you need any help with this, please feel free to call me in the business office at (408)283-8100 ext 2228. The Cathedral parish tax ID number is 94-2734503 The San Jose Cathedral Foundation ID 77-0208232
