Living God’s Word We pray as Jesus prayed that we might hear the voice of the Father, a voice that speaks of God’s love for us. We ask that we might allow that Spirit, God’s holy breath that came upon us at our own baptism, to move us out into the world in service to those most in need whom God has set before us.

Re lectingonGod’sWordThe other night I was looking out the window as the sun was se ng and the layers of clouds allowed the sun to create an extraordinary sunset, pain ng some clouds with a golden hue, while others were orange and red, moving to purple and gray. It was a stunning moment. The bap sm of Jesus is one of those brief moments of beauty, occurring in the first three Gospels (and alluded to in the fourth). Luke’s account differs from the others in that the drama c moment does not occur as Jesus is coming up out of the water but only a er his bap sm, while he is praying. Luke’s Gospel has been called the Gospel of prayer, and from its beginning the adult Jesus is presented as one who prays. At this moment of in macy, “heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove” (Luke 3:21–22). While he was at prayer, the voice spoke to him: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” (3:22). From here on we find that Jesus is under the influence of the Holy Spirit, and this Spirit directs him first into the desert to be tested, then into his years of service. With this solemn celebra on of the bap sm, we too are sent back into the days called “Ordinary Time,” reminded that God has spoken these same words to us at our bap sm: You are my son, my daughter. I delight in you. I send you forth to serve as my Son, Jesus, went forth to serve, accompanied by the Holy Spirit. —James A. Wallace, C.SS.R. Copyright © 2012, World Library Publications. SAINT MARGARET OF HUNGARY 1242 - 1270

Feast day - January 18 Margaret was the daughter of King Bela IV of Hungary, and his wife, Mary Lascaris. She was offered to the Dominican nuns at Vesprem in thanksgiving for answered prayers when she was three years old. St. Margaret was noted for her devo on. She had memorized the Li le Office of the Blessed Virgin within six months from entering the Convent. Margaret chas sed herself

from early childhood, wore an iron girdle, hair shirts and shoes spiked with nails. She received the habit by her fourth birthday, and she o en venerated the Crucifix saying “Lord, I give and abandon myself to Thee forever.” She made solemn profession at the age of 12. As a Dominican nun, she spent many whole nights before the Blessed Sacrament. St. Margaret con nued to grow in holiness, and the interior holiness she possessed manifested itself in outward works. She, a princess by birth, took the lowliest tasks: sweeping, scrubbing the dishes, working with the poor, caring for the sick sisters in the infirmary, no ma er what sickness brought them there. She was content to serve them so that she might draw closer to the Lord. St. Margaret offers us a great witness of fidelity to the Lord. In her, we can see how the hope of eternal life can take root in the soul and lead to a life of joy and sanc ty. Worn out by her efforts, she died on January 18, 1270 aged only twenty-eight.
