CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE, WASHINGTON, D.C. JULY 25, 2010 TODAY’S READINGS sk. Seek. Knock. (Luke 11:9) We all have our limits. Even with our own children, we have only so much patience. Sometimes we just get worn out and can lose our cool with them. Isn’t it amazing, then, to hear Jesus say that our heavenly Father has unlimited patience? Isn’t it astounding that he tells us to go ahead and wear God out with our requests? Despite these assurances, we can still find it hard to keep on asking, seeking and knocking on heaven’s door. We still love God and trust him, but a sense of fate or common sense can overcome simple, trusting faith in the God of the impossible. We get worn out quickly or we lose our focus. Perhaps we spend a day or two on a petition, but we are nothing like the persistent neighbor with his nighttime request. Brothers and sisters, God wants us to bombard him with our petitions every day. He assures us that we cannot overdo it. Part of the solution to problems like abortion, war, illness, broken families, and grinding poverty is constant, persistent, unrelenting prayer. Our Father wants to give us good gifts. He wants to help us with our problems. So be persistent. Go to him every day, and ask, and ask, and ask. Never stop asking. Never give up. Never lose hope. “I thank you, LORD, with all my heart . . . When I cried out, you answered; you strengthened my spirit.” So prayed the psalmist in today’s readings (Psalm 138:1,3). Surely we too can cry out to heaven with patience and persistence. Surely we too can keep on asking, seeking, and knocking. Why? Because “the LORD is on high, but cares for the lowly” (138:6). That’s each one of us. He will never leave us wanting! “Father, we ask you to heal our wounded, suffering world. Pour out grace from your throne, and renew the face of the earth. We will never stop praising you, for we know that you are faithful to the end.” Taken from The Word Among Us, July 2010, Vol. 29, Number 6: Used with permission. CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE, WASHINGTON, D.C. JULY 25, 2010

TODAY’S READINGS sk. Seek. Knock. (Luke 11:9) We all have our limits. Even with our own children, we have only so much patience. Sometimes we just

get worn out and can lose our cool with them. Isn’t it amazing, then, to hear Jesus say that our heavenly

Father has unlimited patience?

We will never stop praising you, for we know that you are faithful to the end.”

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA The Church in Latin America is undergoing a great continental mission, intended to strengthen the faith of the people and to create leaders in their own lands. The Church is being weakened by the loss of members due to economic migration, and it suffers from a low priest-to-parishioners ratio. Today’s Collection funds catechesis and formation programs, evangelization, religious training, and other pastoral programs to strengthen and renew the faith. Please be generous.

MASS FOR THE INDEPENDENCE OF PERU The Embassy and General Consulate of Peru invite all Peruvian citizens to a Mass of Thanksgiving for the 189th anniversary of the National Independence of Peru, to be celebrated at the Cathedral this Wednesday, July 28 at 10am. Please note that there will be no 11am Confessions that day.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS

Are you: 1) an unbaptized adult who would like to become Catholic? 2) an adult baptized in another Christian denomination who wishes to profess your faith as a Catholic Christian? 3) a baptized Catholic who would like to complete your initiation in the Catholic Church? Please contact Heather Kinney at [email protected] or 202-347-3215 x530 to inquire about the process of learning more about the Catholic faith and preparing for the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.

REGISTER FOR CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS ED!

The priority registration deadline for Children’s Religious Education for the upcoming year is this Friday, July 30. Registration forms are available at the back of the Cathedral and in the Rectory. The commitment is weekly classes from 10 to 11am on Sundays from mid-September through early June for both children (ages 7-18) and parents as well as the 11:30am Mass on Sunday. Please submit your completed form and registration fee of $50.00 per family to the Rectory. Contact Heather Kinney at 202-347-3215 x530 or [email protected] with questions.

MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER

“Seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” If you are seeking more intimacy and harmony in your marriage, knock on this door and enrichment will be granted unto you. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends are September 24-26 and November 12-14. For more information, visit dc.wwme.org or call 301-541-7007.

RECTORY HOURS AND SUMMER MASSES The Rectory office hours for this coming week are as follows: Sunday: Closed Monday-Thursday: 9am – 4:30pm Friday-Sunday: 9am – 4pm From July 1 through August 31, there will be no 7am weekday Mass.

WELCOME! If you are a visitor to the Cathedral, we want you to know how  welcome  you  are—whether  you  have  come  from another part of the country, from across the world, or from another parish here  in  the Archdiocese or across  the  river. Thank  you  for  praying with  us. Thank  you  also  for  your generosity, which  helps  us  to  celebrate  our  liturgies  in  a fitting  and  beautiful  way,  and  to  offer  a  wide  range  of services to needy people in the Washington, DC area. Enjoy your visit!

CATHEDRAL BOOK AND NOTE CARDS The  St.  Matthewʹs  parish  community  is  pleased  to announce  the  publication  of  a  new  souvenir  book  on  our beautiful Cathedral  church. The  48‐page  book, written  by Richard Schmidt and Claudia Rousseau, with Joseph Carey, Nancy  McKinley  and  Elizabeth  Sullivan,  features  the Cathedralʹs history,  art  and architecture vividly portrayed through photographs by local photographer, Neil Greentree. We are also offering sets of six note cards picturing the art of the Cathedral. Books and cards are available at the rectory during regular office hours.

CATEQUESIS

CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION TEACHERS NEEDED

The success of our Children’s Religious Education program is a result of the commitment of adult parishioners who generously give of their time and talent to help the children and youth of our parish grow in their faith. If you are interested in learning about teaching opportunities for the 2010-2011 year, please contact Children’s Religious Education Coordinator Julie McLaughlin at [email protected] or 202-441-4882.

INTERESTED IN BECOMING A LECTOR?

An orientation and training session for those wishing to become lectors at the Cathedral will be held Saturday, August 14 in the North Conference Room from 9:30am until 1pm. We welcome both registered parishioners and our “weekday parishioners”—members of other parishes who work downtown and attend weekday Masses at the Cathedral. Participants will be asked to audition in the Cathedral at a later date. Candidates who are invited to become lectors will be asked to commit to reading at Mass at least twice each month. To register, call the Rectory at 202-347-3215 x517 by Friday, August 6. We look forward to seeing you.

CATHEDRAL TOUR GUIDE MINISTRY

Tour Guide Ministers are ambassadors of the Cathedral who welcome visitors of all faiths and orient them to its beauty and sacredness. Tour Guides have the opportunity with each tour, no matter the faith traditions of our visitors, to witness to our Catholic Christian faith as they share the history, art and architecture of this magnificent House of God. Volunteers commit to becoming knowledgeable about the Cathedral using a tour script, book and DVD. One-on-one training is provided. To find out more, contact Gloria Harrington at [email protected] or 202-347-3215 x517, or Maureen Hurley at mhurley@ stmatthewscathedral.org or 202-587-5143.

Most volunteers serve every other Monday. We always need new volunteers to make bag lunches once a month and to serve on Monday mornings. If you are interested in helping, contact Fr. Evelio Menjivar at [email protected] or 202-347-3215 x536. Clothing donations. If you have new or gently used men’s or women’s casual clothing (jeans, shorts, belts, t-shirts, sweaters, sneakers, etc.) to donate or want to purchase items that are most needed, contact Fr. Evelio (contact info above) to make arrangements. Donations will not be accepted at the door without prior approval. Thank you for your understanding. Breakfast Items for the Homeless. Adopt-a-Family School Supply Drive. We need volunteers to help sort and distribute school supplies to families in need in our parish. You can help by bringing school supplies to donate before Mass on July 31, August 1, 7 or 8, or assisting with sorting and distributing supplies from 3pm until 8pm on Tuesday, August 10. To volunteer or for more information, contact Terri Kelly at [email protected] or 202-686-9406 or Fr. Evelio (contact info above).

HEALTH AND WELLNESS FAIR

The second annual Health and Wellness Fair sponsored by St. Matthew’s Social Justice & Community Services Committee will be held on Sunday, September 12 from 8:30am until 3:30pm in the North and East Conference Rooms of the Cathedral. We are very excited about the many new services, screenings and other activities that this year's Fair will offer. Please save the date and plan to take advantage of this opportunity to care for your, and your family’s, health and well-being.

WASHINGTON INTERFAITH NETWORK St. Matthew's will join other WIN congregations for a meeting with the District's mayoral candidates this Monday, July 26 at 7pm at the Asbury Methodist Church, 11th and K Streets, NW. The purpose is to ask each of the candidates to pledge to support WIN's bipartisan agenda of affordable housing, safe neighborhoods and proper funding for public services in our communities. We need a strong presence to show that St. Matthew's is serious in its support for WIN's agenda and to show the candidates that many potential voters are concerned about these issues. For more information on this event, please contact Fr. Evelio (contact info above).

RRRITEITEITE   OFOFOF   CCCHRISTIANHRISTIANHRISTIAN

IIINITIATIONNITIATIONNITIATION   OFOFOF   AAADULTSDULTSDULTS   “[The] People of God, as represented by the local Church, should understand and show by their

concern that the initiation of adults is the responsibility of all the baptized. Therefore the community must always be fully prepared in the pursuit of its apostolic vocation to give help to

those who are searching for Christ.”

For those parishioners who desire to share their faith and feel called to accompany adults in the RCIA process in a particular way, we invite you to prayerfully consider the following opportunities for service.

An Inquiry Minister fields questions from those seeking to learn more about

the Catholic faith and generates discussion on a particular topic of faith.

A Catechetical Minister occasionally presents a topic of faith during a Wednesday RCIA session and facilitates discussion

on the topic.

A Dismissal Minister occasionally facilitates discussion,

faith sharing, and prayer on the Sunday Scripture readings

following the homily at a Sunday Mass.

A Sponsor builds a

one-on-one relationship with an RCIA

participant, serving as a companion, listener, and mentor and attesting to the RCIA participant’s faith and intentions. A

sponsor is an active member of the parish

community, a personal connection to the parish. The ministry of sponsor

does not require a certain level of

knowledge, but a sponsor would participate in a

formation program around prayer, Church teaching, faith sharing,

and service.

A Hospitality Minister helps to

create an atmosphere of welcome at RCIA

retreats and/or receptions (ex.

gathering refreshments, creating sacred space, talking

informally with RCIA participants).

A Retreat

Minister helps to plan the RCIA Advent Retreat and/or RCIA

Lenten Retreat.

MEMORIAL OF SAINTS JOACHIM AND ANNE

This Monday, July 26, the Church celebrates the memorial of St. Joachim and St. Anne, the two people chosen to be the parents of the Virgin Mary. Images of these two saints are found in the Cathedral—take a moment and take a look!

In Our Lady’s Chapel, the large mosaic to the left of the altar depicts two angels holding back the curtains of time to reveal St. Anne and St. Joachim at the fountain of the golden

gate. As described by the artist, Thomas LaFarge, the scene is laid against the glow of the setting sun, symbolic of the advanced years of the two saints. Between them at the bottom of the mosaic flows a fountain. From the fountain springs a genealogical rod at the top of which St. Anne presents her child, Mary, who is to be the mother of Christ. In the niches of Our Lady’s Chapel are statues of the two

saints. Finally, the statuary in the Wedding Chapel portraying the betrothal of Mary and Joseph shows St. Joachim to the right of Joseph and St. Anne to the left of Mary.

“Praised be Joachim and Anne for the child they bore. The Lord gave them the blessing of all the nations.

RESPECT LIFE

That which came to be found life in Him. (Jn 1:3) REFLECTION: On this date in 1968, Pope Paul VI issued Humanae Vitae, which means, Of Human Life. That encyclical outlines the Church’s vision of human life, marriage, and the connection between human love and the creative action of God. Love leads to life; it does not close it off. Love welcomes life; it is not afraid of it. Love and life go together because they are two aspects of the one God. PRAYER: Lord God, You are love and You are life. Open all people to Your love so that they may give life.
