what is sustainability?

problem statement

sustainable materials are important in preserving the earth and its resources

the amount of garbage is increasing, landfills are filling up, and hazardous pollutants fill the air

statistics

breathing the air in bombay, india is equivalent to smoking ten cigarettes a day

americans make up five percent of the world's population, but we use 25% of the worlds resources

americans throw away approximately 200 million tons of household waste a year, which averages out to about 4 pounds per person each day

almost 60 percent of the stuff we throw away can be recycled. recycling one aluminum can results in 97 percent less water pollution and 95 percent less air pollution than creating a new can from raw materials

issues

plastics and other permanent materials are cheaper and easier to mass produce

developing countries are not aware of the trash problem –developed countries are, but it’s late in the game

size

wiring configuration

one 15” x 72” piece is too small to sit on the round end (as a stool), so roll multiple mats concentrically to form a larger stool. the single piece is a good size for an end table or night stand

when placed on the inside, the wire buckled as it was rolled up. to alleviate this problem, wire is wrapped around the outside. the thickness of the felt prevents the user from feeling the wire when seated

concept

rollor is a system of soft and flexible modular mats made from sustainable materials. the applications of rollor are endless! sleep on it, sit on it, roll it up, bend it, twist it, fold it, even wear it!

the rollor system

katie just moved to new york city to pursue a career in advertising and is looking to furnish her studio. space is limited, so she must choose pieces that are compact yet functional.

rollor can be used in many different ways…

how does it work?

scenario

Page 20: Catherine Chen Rollor Process Final 072204

exploded view

the rollor system was developed as a modular, fun, and multi-functional product. initial designs were mats that could be used as a stool, pillow, or floor cushion.

since its inception, rollor has been extended to tabletop sculpture, sleeping mats, exercise mats, apparel, and much more. for customs colors, shapes, and sizes, please contact [email protected]
