CATHERINE CURTIS CROSS SPENCER 27 September, 1862-----27 November 1952

Catherine Curtis Cross Spencer, born 27 September 1862 in Salt lake City, Salt Lake, Utah the 2nd child of Louisa Lucy Catherine Cross and Howard Orson Spencer, known by her family as Kate, (see census 1870) from here on, I shall refer to Grandmother Carter as Kate!

Kate spent her early years in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she experienced the passing of her older sister Annie Louisa age 2 years 9 months, in the year 1863, and the birth of Lucy 1864, Ellen 1866, and Orson in 1868, (see census 1870). It is not clear as to where the family is living as the 1870 census shows them living in Salt Lake City, and the birthplace of Orson, in Orderville, Kane, Utah, reveals that two households are present.

The 1880 census for Howard shows him living in Orderville with a new daughter Malita born 1872, in Orderville and no, Kate, then we find Kate living in Salt Lake City, with her Grandmother (Annie) Hanna Maria Hughes, Cross, (see census 1880) and with that revelation now we understand where the name Frederick comes into her life, from her Grandfather Frederick, Cross.

Over the next 6 years, Kate, living in Salt Lake City meets the man of her choice, and weds Jesse T. Carter, they wed 30 Oct. 1886, in Ogden, Weber, Utah. While living in Salt Lake City, their first child is born 11 August, 1887, Norma Carter, a beautiful daughter. A little over a year later, Norma, died 4 Oct., 1888 and was buried at Salt Lake City Cemetery. A 2nd beautiful daughter Lorraine Carter, was born 6 October, 1888, 2 days after the death of Norma.

A year and seven months pass. While still in Salt Lake City, a son is born 21 May, 1890 named after his paternal Grandfather Thornton Carte. Sometime during the next year and a half the family, Jesse, Catherine, Lorraine and Thornton move to Ogden, Weber county, Utah, where a second son is born, 5 October, 1891, Harold Carter. During the next 6 months, they move back to Salt Lake City, where their eldest son Thornton, passes away 5 June 1892, and is buried Salt Lake City Cemetery 11 June,1892. A third son is born, 9 months after the passing of Thornton. He is named Howard after his maternal Grandfather, Frederick after his maternal Great Grandfather. Howard Frederick Carter was born 21 March, 1893. Over the next three years four months the family is found living in Orderville, Kane, Utah, where Catherine's father Howard Orson Spencer, was the founder of the town imn which he lives.

Catherine gives birth to a third beautiful daughter 13 July, 1896, named Mary Elain after her paternal Grandmother. It appears that they preferred to call Mary Elain by her second name Elain as noted in the census 1900 and 1920. Sometime in 1897 a seventh child is born, a fourth beautiful daughter named after her paternal aunt, Jesse T.'s younger sister Virginia.

On10 December, 1899, Alvin Franklin Carter the fourth son of eight children is born. Again notice they prefer to call Alvin Franklin, Jesse A. Possibly an indication Jesse T. wanted one of his offspring to carry his name. Jesse T's occupation is listed as a farmer, and Catherine is a music teacher, living at home

with Jesse, age 33 and his wife, age 37. The children are Lorraine, age 11, Harold, age 8, Howard, age 7, Elain, age 3, Virginia E., age 2, and Jesse A., age 8/12 (see census 1900.)

It is now the year 1900. Jesse T. and family celebrate the turn of the century in Orderville, Utah with Catherine and her parents, Howard Orson Spencer, and Louisa Lucy Catherine Cross. On 5 July 1901 the fifth beautiful daughter and the ninth child is born to Jesse T. and Catherine. She is named after her mother Catherine Curtis. It now appears that Jesse T. calls his wife Kate, and Catherine refers to Jesse T. as J. and I shall follow suit, my paternal Grandparents Kate and J. Carter, my Grandma and Grandpa Carter!

In Orderville, 13 months have passed, J's desire is now a reality as Kate has given birth to Jesse Thornton Carter, 13 August, 1902, named after his father. He is the fifth son, tenth child of J. and Kate.

You will note that all of the children, have carried the name of one of Kate's or J's ancestors, it appears to be a tradition of our ancestors: Example, Carter, Benjamin Curtis, Carter surname Benjamin, from the maternal side Cameron , Curtis from the paternal side Spencer.

In 1903, Orderville, Kane, Utah at home with J. and Kate are one teenager, two pre-teens, and five children six and younger when they are again blessed with the birth of their eleventh child, a beautiful daughter. They choose to name her after themselves, J Kate Carter, born about June 1903.

I remember growing up in Panguitch, Utah, the cold winter nights and the snow fall, Orderville only a short 45 miles from Panguitch. It's not surprising, in the Summer of 1904, Kate gives birth to their twelveth child, sixth son, on 17 August, 1904. They named this child Eugene Carter. It appears they broke tradition in their naming of their children.

Sometime between September 1904, and Febuary 1906, J. and Kate have moved from Orderville, Utah to Bunkerville, Clark, Nevada. Bunkerville was a very active mining town from 1901-1908. Being mined were Copper, Gold, Silver, Tungsten, Nickel, Platinum, and Colbalt. It's very likely J. was seeking his fortune in the mines. while living in Bunkerville. J and Kate were blessed with their thirteenth child, a beautiful daughter. Their seventh, she was born 25 February, 1906 .

1908. The mining boom had ended, and we find J and Kate on the move once again. (J's obit states they have lived in California eight years, so it must be 1907) In 1910 they have located at 1114 18th St. Oakland, Alameda, California. (see Census 1910). the family consists of Jessie T. age 43, Catherine age 48, Virginia age 12, Alvin age 10, J Kate age 6, Jessie age 7, Eugene age 5, Cora age 4 (if you have noticed the age error between J Kate and Jesse it's on the census that way!)This census was taken 22 April 1910, J. was not employed, Kate was employed as a gardener,(see census 1910). At this time we have lost track of Lorrain age 21, Harold age 18, Howard age17, and Mary Elain age 13.

You may ask why they have moved to Oakland, California. It seems that Virginia, Jesse T's sister, is living with her husband Benjamin Fletcher Steacy, in San Francisco. Living with them are Lomax, Mary E., Jesse T's mother, Sadler Mae S., Jesse T's sister, and James C. Sadler, Mae's husband (see Census 1900). It appears that all of J's family are living in San Francisco except elder brother John H. who is living in Utah.

J and Kate have moved again this time to Petaluma, Sonoma, California. It is probable this move occurred in 1913, as they are living at 432 Fair St (see City Directory 1914). J is employed with George McNear Co., Catherine is still teaching music. Living at home with them are Cora, Eugene, Jessie, J Kate, Alvin, and possibly Virginia and Elain as the younger children are mentioned in the city paper on various occasions, as shown in the following clips.

=======see news clips=============The funeral services over the remains of the late Jesse Carter took place yesterday afternoon at the Blackburn parlors and were attended by many relatives and friends. Rev. John Partridge, pastor emeritus of St. Johns church, conducted the funeral services and spoke words of comfort to the bereaved ones. The body will be shipped to San Francisco, this morning for burial in Mount Olivet cemetery. An inquest was held on the remains by Coroner Phillips on Tuesday night to determine the exact cause of death. A post mortem examination was held before the inquest and disclosed the fact that deceased had died from an abscess on his lung caused by an injury received some months ago while at work in this city. The post mortem examination was held at the suggestion of the attending physician to determine if the accident was responsible for the death, owing to the employers' liability and compensation act as the deceased was insured by the G. P. McNear Company by whom he had been employed.Kate remained in Petaluma after the loss of her love, her man, father of her children, a widow at the age of 52, with 6 children living at home, Virginia 17, Alvin 15, J Kate 11, Jesse 12, Eugene 10, and Cora 9.

Lo and behold the two missing siblings are found in the 1920 Census as Eugene Bero and Cora Bero. Jessie, age 17, single, occupation, machinist in a garage.

The year is 1922 Kate living in Petaluma, many members of her family, living in San Francisco, Cora is attending school and graduating this year from middle school.

========================== We don't know exactly when Kate made the move from Petaluma to San Francisco, but the 1930 census shows her as Catherine Carter at 2509 Van Ness Ave San Francisco, Ca. head of house hold. Rent of 45.00 a month, 67 yrs of age, a widow, 23 yrs old at first marriage, and retired, living with her children Howard F. age 37, a widower, 19 yrs old at first marriage, occupation electrician, contracting, veteran WW l. Eugene age 26, single, occupation electrician, contracting. Lorraine J. Bero age 10, granddaughter, father from New York.

We have no information on Kate, after the 1930 census until 1952. She was living in Alameda, Alameda, Calif. at the time of her passin., Grandmother Kate Carter was expecting all of her family to arrive for Thanksgiving dinner 1952, she had prepared a very large dinner, she went to her bedroom to take a nap before making her pies. During her nap she passed, a very peaceful passing 27, November 1952, Alameda, Alameda, California. I was 11 yrs of age, attended her funeral and witnessed her burial, in San Francisco.
