YOUTH MINISTRY FAITH FORMATION

40th Anniversary of Ordination Thank You. “Thank you” hardly seems to express all that I want to say to everyone who celebrated with me God’s goodness and love in calling me to the priesthood forty years ago and his faithfulness to me over that same span of years.

The memory of May 31st here at St. Cecilia’s will remain with me as does the memory of June 4, 2000 when I observed the 25th anniversary of my ordination at St. Patrick’s in Cedar Falls.

I know I speak for my mother, Evelyn, and my brothers John and Jeff and my sister-in-law Mona in expressing their thanks to all of you for your hospitality to our family as well.

As I mentioned at the Mass of Thanksgiving, it is always dangerous to list specific people for fear of inadvertently omitting someone. However, I do want again to thank JoAnne Dalhoff, Jane Baty and the parish welcome and life committee for the endless hours of planning, food preparation, set-up and clean-up that went into the reception. Special thanks, too, to Bob Hauser and all involved in music ministry at the Mass. Bob was able to take music from my Mass of Ordination from a couple of printed refrains I had in my Mass program that day and from a recording and re-create them. These pieces of music literally had not been sung or heard in forty years! Thanks, also goes to the Polashek Family and the members of the string quartet for the musical “banquet” at the reception in the Social Hall following the Mass. Thanks, too, to the parish staff for the part they played. And then, most of all, there are all those among you who gave of your time and talent in so many ways that I will never know of. God bless each of you for whatever part you played, large or small. I am eternally grateful.

As mentioned last weekend, thank you to all who offered me greetings and other remembrances. I’m taking my time going through them, and like a fine wine, savoring your messages as I hold you up in prayer.

I close with these words of scripture so dear to me: “I need your help, for I want not only to share my faith with you but to be encouraged by yours: each of us will be a blessing to the other.” Romans 1:12. Let us continue to pray for each other.

In Christ’s love, Father Jim

June 14, 2015—Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

•WELCOME•

STEWARDSHIP: Like the sower in today’s Gospel, I scatter as seed my gifts of time, talent, and resources, and I trust that, by God’s grace and in God’s time, these small gifts of myself may grow and flourish and help to bring about the kingdom of God.

TO OUR GUESTS We hope that God will grant you peace and rest while you are under our roof today.

May this church be your “second” home.

May those you love be near you in thought and prayer.

Even though we may not get to know you, We pray that you will be comfortable and happy as if you were in your own church home.

May whatever need brought you our way find a hearing by God.

When you leave, may your journey be safe.

We pray you God’s peace.

Gifts of Stock Avoid Capital Gains Tax! If you own appreciated stock, you may wish to consider fiving stock to the parish rather than cash. You may be able to deduct the full value of the stock, avoid capital gains tax, and make a substantial gift to the parish. A good steward uses his or her assets in a way that does the most good. Please contact Frank Oppold—290-1163.

A Great Way You Can Help a Hurting Friend Do you have a friend, neighbor, coworker, or relative who is going through a difficult time? Here's a great way you can help them - tell them about our Stephen Ministry! Stephen Ministers are members of St. Cecilia & St. Thomas who have received special training to provide high-quality, confidential, one-to-one, Christian care to people who are grieving the loss of a loved one, coping with a cancer diagnosis, going through a divorce or separation, battling a chronic illness (or caring for a spouse or parent who is terminally ill), experiencing a great deal of stress, facing the loss of a job - or encountering any of countless other life challenges.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus compares the beginning of God’s kingdom to a mustard seed. This tiny seed, which fits in the palm of a hand, can grow to fifteen feet with sprawling branches! Like the mustard seed, the Christian community had a tiny, seemingly insignificant beginning. The church, which began with about 120 followers, added three thousand people on Pentecost Day following the de-scent of the Holy Spirit. Since then, the number of Christ’s disci-ples has grown incalculably and continues to grow throughout the world. Good stewards go about God’s business of “planting seeds” among all those they encounter. What will we do this week to add to God’s kingdom?

RCIA

Like the seed in today’s gospel, the Kingdom of God isn’t fully evident – but, it is growing and maturing. We, the hearers of Jesus’ parable today, are challenged to recognize and incorporate this mysterious movement into our lives. Jesus’ parables invite us to become his disciples – to proclaim the reign of God to those we meet. . . . . . Have you talked about your faith with someone, recently, who might be interested in learning more about the Catholic Church? Take a chance! Plant a seed! Watch it grow!

Also, in case you are not aware, the RCIA process receives interested persons at any time during the year. So, if you are an adult or know an adult or child over the age of 7 interested in becoming a Catholic and celebrating baptism or confirmation and First Eucharist, please contact Jo Anne Dalhoff at [email protected] or call the parish office at 515-233-3092.

We Are Our Brother's Keeper: Serving Christ as Knights of Columbus The St. Cecilia Knights of Columbus council invites all interested Catholic men of the parish to learn more about how involvement as Knights builds up their families, the Church, and their community. A new member initiation will be hosted on Sun., June 28 at 1:30PM in the North Social Hall. Please contact Grand Knight, Paul Fell, 515-520-3426 or Membership Chair, Dan Rajewski, 515-291-5698, for additional information on the Knights and attending the event.

The St. Cecilia Social Justice Committee will meet Mon., June 15 at 7PM in the Sunroom. All are welcome to attend!

St. Cecilia Summer Playgroup will meet every week this summer. The 1st & 3rd weeks of the month playgroup will meet on Wed. at Moore Memorial Park (3050 Northridge Pkwy). The 2nd & 4th weeks of the month playgroup will meet on Tues. at Daley Park (340 Wilder Blvd). Playgroup will meet from 9:30-11AM. Playgroup will not meet the week of July 27-31 (Vacation Bible School week). Look for the red balloon to find the St. Cecilia group. Bring your own snacks and drinks if you’d like. Children of all ages (along with their parents or caregivers) are encouraged to come! If you would like to be added to the email list to receive weekly reminders and emails if we cancel because of weather, please send an email to Jessica Loecke at [email protected] or call/text (515) 451-8126.
