Faith Formation Totus Tuus - July 30-August 4 Totus Tuus is a summer Catholic youth program dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel and sharing the Catholic faith through evangelization, catechesis, Christian witness and Eucharistic worship. And thanks to a generous grant from the Nativity Men’s Club, a Totus Tuus team of four college students excited about sharing their faith is coming to Nativity from July 30 through August 4! The Day Program is for students entering grades 1-6 in the fall and will run July 31-August 4 from 9am-2:30pm. The Evening Program, for students entering grades 7-12 in the fall, will be July 30-August 3, 6-8:30pm. Tuition is $60 for the Day Program or $30 for students in Nativity’s Catholic Kid’s Camp in June. The Evening Program is $20 and includes dinner. Tuition assistance is available. Totus Tuus is Latin for “Totally Yours” and was Pope St. John Paul II’s Papal Motto. Registration and more information is available in the back of church or at parish.nativity-mn.org/totus-tuus. For additional information, contact Jill Dobie at [email protected].

Community Mass in Honor of St. Josemaria Escriva - June 26 All are invited to a Mass celebrating the feast of St. Josemaria Escriva at the Cathedral of St. Paul on Monday, June 26 at 5:15pm with Archbishop Bernard Hebda as the principal celebrant. St. Josemaria “was chosen by the Lord to proclaim the universal call to holiness and to indicate that everyday life—its customary activities—are a path towards holiness. It could be said that he was the saint of the ordinary. He was really convinced that, for whoever lives with an outlook of faith, everything offers an opportunity for a meeting with God, everything becomes a stimulus for prayer. Seen in that way, daily life reveals an unsuspected greatness. Holiness is really put on everyone's doorstep.” -Pope St. John Paul II

Submissions Publishing Guidelines Content is typically required by Monday at noon for the following Sunday’s bulletin, while digital content requires at least two business days prior to desired publication (see upcoming early deadlines on the back page). Visit Parish.Nativity-MN.org/Content-Submissions for more information or to submit copy for the parish bulletin, online calendar, social media, and email newsletter. Images must still be sent via email to [email protected]. Publishing is not guaranteed, and is generally granted on a first-come, first-served basis, giving priority to official Nativity events. Bulletin submissions can be sent to [email protected].

New Seminarian New Summer Seminarian Nativity will an be welcoming a seminarian from The St. Paul Seminary this summer to learn the ropes in a parish setting and help with different responsibilities and initiatives. We asked our new summer Seminarian, Joe Connelly (pictured below), to introduce himself: My name is Joseph Connelly. I was born and raised in Savage, MN to Frank and Mary Connelly as the fifth of ten children, with seven brothers and two sisters. My father was an aircraft cleaner for Northwest Airlines and my mother was a stay-at-home mom until all the kids were grown up, when she then worked at the Welcoming Center at the Cathedral for close to ten years until she retired in 2015. I thought about becoming a priest when I was a small kid but did not pursue the idea until I was much older. When I graduated from Burnsville High School in 2003, I entered the workforce, and my first job out of high school was working for the airlines, as a cleaner and baggage handler, first for Sun Country and then for Northwest. During the NWA strike of 2005, I saw many workers and their families go through financial difficulties and saw the burden of future uncertainties. It was during the strike that I decided to go back to school and pursue some kind of education. With a strong desire for community service, I decided to pursue a career in law enforcement. Working my way through college as a valet driver at Mystic Lake Casino and as a cash-counter and bookmaker at Canterbury Park, I received my associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, and then went to Jordan, MN for the Law Enforcement Skills program. It was during this time that the calling of the priesthood came back in a strong way, a calling which I decided to pursue with no idea of how to pursue it. I contacted a priest I knew and asked him how someone becomes a priest and he had me contact the Vocations Director of the Archdiocese, and after a screening and application process, I entered seminary in 2011. Seminary has been a great experience with many challenges and many blessings. Only having an associate’s degree meant that I had to enter into St. John Vianney College Seminary to get a degree in philosophy. Being an older guy in the seminary was difficult but I appreciated the great structure SJV had in helping the guys grow in the spiritual life. I have now completed my second year at The St. Paul Seminary and am looking forward to entering into Theology III in the fall. I am also looking forward to spending the next two months at Nativity parish, and getting to know the parish and parishioners better. If you see me around, feel free to say hello! I like to consider myself an amateur movie buff, an even more amateurish history buff, as well as a Twins and Vikings fan. So if you have any good recommendations for movies, books, or want to shoot the breeze about the Twins, I look forward to it!

Pastoral Care Capital City Grief Coalition - Thursday, June 15, 5:30-7pm Nativity is hosting the Capital City Grief Coalition for those who have suffered the loss of a loved one on Thursdays during the months of June and July from 5:30-7pm in Steiner Hall. The evening begins with a 30-minute presentation followed by small group discussion. Newcomers are welcome, and anyone is free to come for the presentation only. There are a variety of presentations planned which include Brenda Demotte on June 15, “Gender Differences in Grief” and July 27, “Moving From Stress to Balance and Resilience” (please note the change of date). Caryn Sullivan, author of “Bitter or Better” will present on June 29. We wish to offer our appreciation to parishioners Cathy and Lucy who have contacted speakers and hosting them, as well as to the speakers for sharing their experience and knowledge with the bereaved. Thank you! For more information about the Coalition, please contact the coordinator, Lois Knutson, at (651) 227-4430. We still have openings on June 22 and July 6 for presenters. If interested, please contact Nancy Shatek-Suek at (651) 696-5444 or [email protected].

Sacred Liturgy Fr. Chad’s Mass of Thanksgiving - Sunday, June 11, 5pm All are invited to Father Chad VanHoose’s Mass of Thanksgiving this Sunday, June 11 at 5pm in the church. Fr. Chad (pictured at right) served as a deacon at Nativity last summer and was ordained a priest on Saturday, May 27. All who attend and are properly disposed will receive a plenary indulgence. Presbyteral Assembly - June 19-22 The priests of the Archdiocese will meet with Archbishop Hebda for their bi-annual Presbyteral Assembly next week. As a result, there will be no confessions beginning the afternoon of next Monday, June 19 through Thursday morning, June 22, and there will be Communion services instead of daily masses. Our normal mass schedule will resume with evening liturgies on Thursday, June 22.

Respect Life Benefit Dinner - Tuesday, June 13 Prenatal Partners for Life offers hope and support for families facing an adverse diagnosis of their child. PPFL has helped parents and children in all 50 states as well as 46 countries worldwide. Help support the important work of PPFL by attending their 11th annual benefit dinner on Tuesday, June 13 at the University of Saint Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis in the Schulze Grand Atrium. Award-winning fashion photographer Rick Guidotti, founder of www.positiveexposure.org (pictured at right), is the inspirational speaker for the evening. For complete information and to register online, visit www.prenatalpartnersforlife.org. July Book Discussion The Respect Life Committee will read and discuss Not Equal: Civil Rights Gone Wrong by Ryan Bomberger, the Founder of the Radiance Foundation. Ryan powerfully details the Civil Rights Movement and is very well known in the field. His is a hopeful message that truth and passionate persistence cannot be defeated by those who pervert justice and equality. If you would like to join us in reading Ryan's first book, or purchase a copy for $16.25, please contact Karen McCann at [email protected] or (612) 964-4522. The discussion will be in July at a date and time to be announced.

Bill Beltz Bingo Retirement Party For Bill Beltz - Thursday, June 15, 6-8pm In case you haven't heard, our beloved Facilities Director Bill Beltz is retiring on June 30 after 39 years of generous and faithful service to Nativity. We're honoring his work and celebrating his legacy with a pizza party and bingo extravaganza on Thursday, June 15 from 6-8pm in the School Cafeteria. Let's pack the house to send Bill out right. Please RSVP and let us know if you'll be able to help contribute something to the cause by following the link at parish.nativity-mn.org/events/bill-beltz-bingo-bash. Most importantly, we want you and your family there! Special thanks to the Nativity Men's Club, NCCW, NCF, and many others who have pledged their support. If you'd like to contribute in any way not listed, please contact Leah at the parish office at [email protected]. Thank you!

NCCW Spirit of Mary Award The Nominees Each year the NCCW recognizes an outstanding young woman with the Spirit of Mary Award. The award winner must have demonstrated acts of faith, humility, generosity, and kindness through her school, parish, and community involvement. Female parishioners who are currently seniors in high school may apply or may be nominated. The award is a cash prize of $500, with $100 designated to the winner’s charity of choice. Over the next two weeks, we will honor our Spirit of Mary Award nominees in this space. Ellie Silberhorn Ellie is an Honors student and AP scholar, achieving Honor Roll status all four years at Visitation High School. She is President of the Enviro Club and active in the Leadership Club and Peer Mentors. Ellie runs Cross Country and plays Hockey. Her interests include educating people on the environment, political activism, reading, and running. She works as a nanny two nights a week and volunteers at Children’s Hospital, Risen Christ Catholic School, Project Home, and she teaches 3rd grade Religion Class. Ellie cares for God’s creation as an environmental activist and serves the poor through volunteer work. She lives her faith in daily actions and delights in the dignity of the human person. Ellie responded to the Holy Father’s Encyclical on the environment by organizing an Earth Day cleanup. She devotes herself to learning in order to effectively act out her faith, and she is a beautiful reflection of our Blessed Mother in the modern world. Grace Schwab Grace is an Honors and AP student at Visitation High School. She has been active in Student Government each year, serving as President her senior year, and is involved in the Leadership Team. She has served as President and Publicity Chair of the Life Club, has travelled to the National March for Life in D.C. twice, and is an active member of Endow. Grace plays Varsity Tennis and Track and she was also on the Alpine Ski Team. She has worked as a student receptionist and with children in her school’s summer program. Grace received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award and serves the community at the Carondelet Nursing Home, as an altar server at Nativity, at Children’s Hospital, as a Servants Camp counselor, at Nativity’s Catholic Kids Camp, as an Honor Guard at alumni funerals, and as a Eucharistic Minister. Grace has a gentle yet strong spirit of serving her family, parish, and school, which is nothing short of inspiring. She is an advocate for the sanctity of life at all stages and is a wonderful example of a faithful young Catholic woman.

Eileen Ryan Eileen is an Honors and AP student at Visitation High School who has earned a place on the High Honor Roll all four years. She participates in the Spanish Club, Environmental Club, and the Women Activists Group. Eileen plays Varsity Volleyball, Track, and Lacrosse and enjoys sports, being outdoors, reading, and spending time with friends. Eileen works as a summer nanny and babysits throughout the school year. She volunteers at St. Joseph’s Hospital, delivers turkeys and stockings in North Minneapolis, and assists the elderly at The Glenn in Minnetonka. Eileen has a listening heart, a loyalty to friends, and thoughtful generosity. Through life’s challenges, she demonstrates perseverance and focus, and when she speaks, one listens. She is not loud or overwhelming, but rather like the gentle breeze that moved Elijah she is like a wave of love that touches the hearts of the elderly she serves. She is an example of our Blessed Mother’s gentle strength and an exemplar of her spirit. Sophia Lauber Sophia is an Honors and AP scholar at Visitation High School, earning a place on the High Honor Roll every semester. She is a commended National Merit Scholar and Silver Medalist in the National Spanish Exam. Sophia is the School Newspaper Editor, a member of the Leadership team, and has served as President and Secretary of the Respect Life Club. She attended the March for Life in December and has led over 50 daytrips to Canada through the YMCA Wilderness camps. She has been the JV Hockey Captain for three years and also plays Varsity Lacrosse, Varsity Tennis, and Soccer. Sophia enjoys camping, hiking, being in nature, reading, writing, spending time with family, baking, and photography. She has worked as a babysitter, as kitchen helper at Visitation Monastery, and at Sweet Martha’s Cookies. Her volunteer activities include Eucharistic Minister, Nativity Altar Server, Tutor at Sharing and Caring Hands, and Volunteer with Project Home. Sophia is a young woman of faith-filled character who freely and consistently gives to others. She has a compassionate, joyful nature, and is generous with her time and talent. She exemplifies the Spirit of Mary with her tenacity, strength of spirit, humility, integrity, and grace.
