building communitya way of life

Sunday, May 10, 2015 “This I command you: love one another.” Note that in this direct quote from today’s Gospel that the Lord does not offer this as a suggestion nor as an option. It is a command. He reinforces this several times in Holy Scripture as He offers it as one of the two most important commandments. If we make an effort to genuinely love one another, we will have gone a long way to living out discipleship and stewardship.

It is appropriate on this Sixth Sunday of Easter when we celebrate Mothers’ Day throughout the United States that our readings are filled with the message of love. The love of a mother is one of the great blessings anyone can receive. We should have no difficulty on this day letting our mothers — in fact, all those women who have provided support and forgiveness to us — know that we love them.

If loving one another is one of the hallmarks of stewardship as a way of life, showing that love to our mothers, and for mothers, showing and expressing their love to their children is paramount on this day. As Christ said in today’s Gospel, “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s love for one’s friends.” Mothers do that constantly, sacrificing so much for their children. We are blessed; let the “mothers” in our lives know that they are a blessing.

prayer requestsThe Islamic group (ISIS) just took over Quaragosh, the biggest Christian city in Iraq. There are hundreds of men, women and children that are being beheaded. The people are asking for prayers to be made on their behalf concerning the ongoing atrocity in their country. Please take one minute to pray for them. They asked for this special prayer. Please, ensure you pass across the prayer request to the body of Christ for fervent prayers offered on behalf of the brothers, sisters and children in Iraq. This is an urgent SOS.

May God bless you.

From Andrew White the Vicar of Baghdad.

Dominican Life in the 21st Century:Solemn High Mass According to the Dominican Rite and Reflections on Dominican Life Today.

In honor of the Year for Consecrated Life, the Dominican nuns of Corpus Christi Monastery, the friars of the Western Dominican Province, and the Corpus Christi chapter of Dominican Laity joyfully invite you to Dominican Life in the 21st Century, at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Corpus Christi Monastery, 215 Oak Grove Avenue, Menlo Park, California.

The morning will begin with a Solemn High Mass according to the Dominican Rite; the celebrant will be Fr. Ambrose Sigman, O.P. Following Mass, the Dominican friars, nuns, and laity will present three short talks on Dominican life. A light reception will follow.

Founded by St. Dominic 800 years ago, the Order of Friars Preachers was commissioned to contemplate God and share with others the fruit of that contemplation, preaching the Gospel for the salvation of souls. Today, the sons and daughters of St. Dominic continue to embrace and live out that charism as religious friars and nuns, sisters and laity.

For more information, please contact Sr. Joseph Marie, O.P. at [email protected] or (650) 322-1801

John wrote, “Let us love each other because love is form God. . . The person without love knows nothing of God, because God is love.”

Second Reading 1 John 4:7-10

Jesus told his disciples, “This is my command: Love each other as I have loved you. There is no greater love than this, to lay down your lives for your friends.”

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Sanctus Stanford Mass of Unity Eleazar Cortés

Far too late have I begun to love you;you were there within me, I was outside, and I sought you, seeing blindly just beyond myself;and poured away like water,I took flight from you and I was lost, surrounded by such beauty which is not you. Then you called and cried aloud to me,breaking through the silence of my deafness,Dazzling brightness, you appeared to me,and at once you put to flight my blindness.Drawing deep, I smell your fragrant presence, still I gasp for breath and long for you.Since I tasted you I only thirst and hunger after you. How, with a simple touch, your fire consumes me.Now my heart, aflame and blazing, leaps to you for peace.
