SCHOOL OFFICE

November is Homelessness Awareness Month

November is a busy month filled with feast days and holidays. It’s the time of year when we all reflect on our lives, finding gratitude and peace in where and who we are. But there are many families and individuals that will not be able to come together during the season, torn apart by hunger and homelessness. The epidemic of hunger and homelessness sadly affects too many adults and children in our community. This month gives us an opportunity to educate ourselves on the plight of the hungry and unsheltered. We each play a part in ending homelessness in our community. How will you get involved?

Learn: Research the statistics of homeless at www.cchealth.org/

homeless. On any given night in 2018, 1,537 individuals, including seniors and children were living outside. Join a community conversation about homelessness hosted by the Concord Library, November 29th, 3 pm-4:30 pm.

Advocate: Talk to the city council about options to help address

homelessness Service: Watch for upcoming coat dr ive. Donate your extra

clothes. Collect toiletries when you stay in a hotel and donate them. Volunteer with the Contra Costa Council on Homelessness

“In the poor and outcast we see Christ’s face; by loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Christ”---Pope Francis

For more information about how to get involved or where to take your donations, please contact Gloria Schafer [email protected] , Don DeWitt [email protected] or Kathie Hieb at [email protected]. Homeless Outreach Team, St. Agnes St Vincent de Paul Conference.

ONE WARM COAT DRIVE November 10-11 and 17-18

The St. Agnes Knights of Columbus Council, in partnership with the St. Agnes St. Vincent de Paul Society, is collecting new or gently used coats for the One Warm Coat Drive. The collected coats will be distributed to the needy in the county on November 23. Two baskets will be at the back of the church during the weekend of November 11 and November 18 for the collection. Your support makes this winter warmer for the needy.

THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today’s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn’t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus’ way of service, even if it requires giving one’s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God’s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life “to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him” (Hebrews 9:28). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

ST. MARY’S DINNER Request for Cooked Turkeys 12/16/18

On December 16th, St. Agnes will once again provide a Christmas dinner for the seniors at St. Mary’s Center in downtown Oakland. If you would be willing to roast a turkey and deliver it to the church kitchen on the morning of December 16th, please call Linda Lorenzetti at (925) 595-4820. Thank you for your generosity!

KIDS CRAFTS November 18th after 9 and 11 a.m. Masses

We encourage any children that would like to help make placemats for the people who will be attending the Loaves and Fishes Thanksgiving Dinner to stop by the craft table after the 9 am and 11 am Masses next weekend. In this way, your family can be part of a welcome for those who don’t have another place to go on Thanksgiving.

GIVING TREE

The Giving Trees are up and loaded with ‘Stars’! Please take one (or several) to help make Christmas happier for the needy of our community. Individuals receiving your gifts have been carefully screened and are very deserving. The return date for gifts (which is on the back of each ‘star’) is the weekend of December 8/9 no later than after the 11:00 Mass. Please bring your gifts with the stars attached to Mass that weekend. Gifts will be distributed to agencies at 12 noon on Sunday, December 9th. If you are a member of the St. Agnes Parish Family and are having a difficult time financially this season, the St. Agnes Giving Tree could help make your or your family's Christmas a little brighter. Stop by the Ministry Center and complete a short form by Thursday, December 6. The information you provide will be kept confidential.

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS FOR OUR TROOPS

November 18th

The Blue Star Moms will have a postcard table set up on November 18th after the 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Masses to sign Christmas cards for our military troops.

They will also be collecting items to send, and are in need of baby wipes, beef jerky and travel-sized toiletries for their care packages.

Questions, contact Chris Artale at [email protected] or Anna Henesy at [email protected].

A little quiz for Homelessness Awareness Month Could You Survive on the Street?

Put a check mark by each item you know how to do

____1. I know where the best Food Pantries and Soup Kitchens are.

____2. I know which grocery stores’ garbage bins can be accessed for thrown-way food.

____3. I know how to create a “bedroom” for my children in the backseat of the car.

____4. I know where to go to shower and wash my clothes.

____5. I know how to live without electricity and a phone.

____6. I know how to get and use food stamps.

____7. I know where the free medical clinics are.

____8. I know the safest places to sleep outdoors.

____9. I know where the Family Shelters are.

___ 10. I can carry all my possessions in a backpack.

These are just some of the challenges that our “unsheltered” brothers and sisters face on a daily basis. When your stomach is full from a hot nutritious meal instead of spoiled discarded, ant covered food pulled from a trash can or when you climb into a hot shower before getting into a warm bed in a place you call home…Please Remember Them.
