Roque Dias Parish Secretary Louise Ryall Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School Principal Mr. Steven Haskins The Pharisees sent their disciples to Jesus, with a few of Herod’s followers mixed in, to ask: “Teacher, we know you have integrity, teach the way of God accurately, are indifferent to popular opinion, and don’t pander to your students. So, tell us honestly: Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” Jesus knew they were up to no good. He said: “Why are you playing these games? Why are you trying to trap me?” Matthew 22, 15-21 While today’s gospel-reading describes an incident in which Jesus demonstrated that he was not going to be tested in matters political by hypocrites who had set out to trap him with a tricky question that, on the surface, looked as though it related to a real-life dilemma, it does raise the issue of how living in organised societies calls us to make decisions based on sound moral principles. In his third apostolic exhortation, entitled Gaudete et Exultate (Rejoice and Be Glad), Pope Francis states that all Christians living in a democracy have a serious duty to participate in public life and to contribute to the common good. He writes: “Your identification with Christ and his will involves a commitment to build with him that kingdom of love, justice and universal peace…You cannot grow in holiness without committing yourself, body and soul, to giving your best to this endeavour.” Gaudete et Exsultate, 2019, page 6, #25 On the surface, today’s gospel-reading is an account of how Jewish religious leaders joined forces with a local political group to trick Jesus into upsetting either the Roman occupiers or the local religious authorities. While Jesus was quick to see their scheming, his enigmatic response - “Render to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what is God’s.” - has sometimes been misinterpreted to suggest that there should be a separation between church and state. However, it’s vital that we do not lose sight of the fact that everything belongs to God. God is the source of all that exists. There is no part of life and civilisation that lies outside of God’s concern. As Christians, as disciples of Jesus, we have a responsibility to scrutinise and critique the decisions made by the governments we elect and the agencies those governments appoint to administer the revenue accumulated from taxation. Things like health care, education and commerce are regulated by institutions, established by elected government, but those institutions have a responsibility to care for the needs of all and to ensure that the common good is served. As a consequence of our allegiance to Jesus and his Gospel, we have a shared responsibility to serve the cause of social justice, to protect the most vulnerable among us, to promote the common good. That’s why a Pope can remind us that, as Christians, we have a serious duty to participate in public life, and a group of American bishops can call us to have consciences that are attuned to how we vote and how we embrace our political responsibilities. A reading from the prophet Isaiah

I have taken the hand of Cyrus to subdue nations before his countenance.

Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whom he has taken by his right hand to subdue nations before him and strip the loins of kings, to force gateways before him that their gates be closed no more: It is for the sake of my servant Jacob, of Israel my chosen one, that I have called you by your name, conferring a title though you do not know me. I am the Lord, unrivalled; there is no other God besides me. Though you do not know me, I arm you that men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun that, apart from me, all is nothing.

A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Thessalonians

We are mindful of your faith, hope, and love.

From Paul, Silvanus and Timothy, to the Church in Thessalonika which is in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ; wishing you grace and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We always mention you in our prayers and thank God for you all, and constantly remember before God our Father how you have shown your faith in action, worked for love and persevered through hope, in our Lord Jesus Christ. We know, brothers, that God loves you and that you have been chosen, because when we brought the Good News to you, it came to you not only as words, but as power and as the Holy Spirit and as utter conviction.

CH:es 15/10/2020 Dear Friends Thank you for your interest in the faith and learning of children and young people in the Diocese of Parramatta. I am writing to advise that an updated version of the Draft New Curriculum for Religious Education is now available on the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta website. When it is launched in late 2021 the Draft New Curriculum will replace ‘Sharing Our Story’, the current curriculum that has been in place for more than 20 years. For several years now, our Catholic community has been working together to update the way we share our faith with children and young people. This is a work in progress and will take time. The Draft New Curriculum remains faithful to Sacred Scripture and Tradition while ensuring that the way that the learning and teaching happens is kept up-to-date. We’ve been surveying our schools about their experiences of trialling aspects of the Draft New Curriculum. As you would expect, we’re continuing to make changes based on feedback from clergy, parents, teachers and students. As a result, you’ll notice that this document now includes references to the relevant sections of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and a new ‘insights’ section for teachers to use as a resource and guide. A guide to Understanding the Draft New Curriculum for Religious Education in the Diocese of Parramatta has also been provided on the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta website to help community members learn more. We know that it is important to keep our Catholic community updated about this approach that is all about sharing our Catholic faith with the next generation. If you would like to share your thoughts, please contact [email protected]. Yours in Christ

Christine Howe Relieving Executive Director

MEDIA RELEASE

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Saint Mary MacKillop’s canonisation Sydney, 12 October 2020: This Saturday 17 October 2020 will mark the 10th anniversary of Saint Mary MacKillop’s canonisation at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome, declaring her Australia’s first canonised saint. Pope Benedict XVI addressed tens of thousands gathered in St Peter’s Square. About 9000 Australians travelled to celebrate this occasion.

For Catholic, Christian and secular Australians, it was a meaningful moment, celebrating the values at the heart of what it means to be Australian, as well as her witness to the sacred in everyday life. Ten years on, the Sisters of Saint Joseph invite the Australian community to take this opportunity to reflect on what the canonisation of Saint Mary MacKillop meant to Australians then, and what it means to us now.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the canonisation of Saint Mary MacKillop and the wonderful life and legacy she left behind, the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart are pleased to remember her with commemorative prayers, videos, and a global vigil in her honour.

Inspiring all Australians to take courage and maintain hope as Mary did throughout her life, the theme chosen for this celebration is ‘Take Fresh Courage’. This theme chosen against the backdrop of the many challenges Australians have faced in 2020 is taken from a letter written by St Mary MacKillop in 1877.

On 16 October 2020 at 8pm AEST, the Sisters of Saint Joseph will hold Courage Hour, a global vigil of deep peace, prayer, and reflection. The Sisters invite all who may wish to participate to join the Vigil online www.sosj.org.au/10th-anniversary/ and celebrate Mary’s life and follow her lead to ‘Take Fresh Courage’.

Sister Monica Cavanagh, Congregational Leader of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, said, “The 10th anniversary of Saint Mary MacKillop’s canonisation is a chance for us to reflect on Mary’s legacy and the valuable lessons her life experiences have taught us.

“She faced hard times and adversity over the years, from her family’s poverty to the loss of many loved ones throughout her life. She carried on, strengthened by her faith and her determination to serve others. She worked hard, travelled widely, and spoke courageously in love. She was a woman of strong convictions and great energy who treasured friendship and family. Mary always had a place in her heart for those most challenged by life’s circumstances.

I am proud that the Sisters of Saint Joseph continue to follow in her footsteps today and people from around the world find inspiration in her example.

10 years on from the day when Pope Benedict XVI declared her a Saint, people everywhere are invited to take this moment to remember Mary’s faith, tenacity and dedication to others, and her inspiration to “Take Fresh Courage.”

Due to COVID-19 restrictions there will be no formal celebrations at Mary MacKillop Place for the anniversary, however, the Sisters invite you to celebrate this occasion by engaging with the resources available on www.sosj.org.au/10th-anniversary/.

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A

Give to God what belongs to God

Jesus believed that people should obey the law and pay their taxes to the Romans.

What are some laws or rules that we must obey?

Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar...

Jesus tells us that we belong to God. We can give ourselves to God by following

Jesus’ teachings and loving others as he did. Draw a picture of yourself doing something

as Jesus would have done.

Jesus tells us that we belong to God.

Give to God what belongs to God.

Colour in the shapes that contain dots to reveal something that Jesus wants us to show others.
