A Word from Debbie: Have you ever taken the time to stop for a few minutes to really look at the stained glass windows in our beautiful old church? They tell a rich story if you let them. Each window speaks in a unique way, and can only be appreciated when the light is right. Recently Paula conducted a tour of the windows for a group of 3 year olds from a local childcare facility, who were so excited to come inside the church to see the beautiful pictures they could not see from outside. Only when given the opportunity to examine the windows in the right light were the mysteries of the big dark windows as seen from the road revealed. I have been drawing a similar conclusion from the familiar Christmas story we all know so well - Mary and Jo- seph on the road to Bethlehem, the don- key, the animals of the stable where the young couple stay, the hay in which new- born baby Jesus finds a bed, the visits of the shepherds and the wise men, the sheep and camels, the star, the angels. Our Christmas Eve Family Mass, to be held at 7.00 pm on 24th December in the grounds of the church and parish centre, is focused around a retelling of this well-known story at the Gospel, which we celebrate through a live nativity scene. We have been 'casting' the children who will take up these roles, so the call is out for any child who would like to be involved to let us know at the parish office. Depending on their age and personality, the role each child picks up seems to naturally fit. Each 'character' in this well-known story comes with its own personality, something we can overlook if we remain too busy to pause and to prepare our hearts in Advent, the time of waiting. Just as the light must be right to fully appreciate the stained glass windows and their stories, the famil- iar story of Jesus' birth must be given some quiet contemplation for its fullness to shine through. We believe Mary may have been about 14 or 15 marriageable age in those days. As she gave birth to the child whose presence was heralded by an angel, Mary was away from home, without the assistance of even her mum, but certainly without the luxury of a modern hospi- tal. She was tired after a long jour- ney, There were no familiar faces except Joseph's, and the couple and their son were forced to rely on the kindness of strangers for the basics, Mary had no fancy bed with clean sheets to lay her precious newborn in, we are told he was laid in the food trough that the animals ate from, the man- ger.. If you allow the light to shine through this single little detail in the right way, you may pick up that Jesus later says 'I am the bread of life', 'eat my body, drink my blood'. We speak of Jesus in the Eu- charist as food for our journey, and here he is at the first moments of his own human journey laid in the trough that feeds the animals. There is a connection to be glimpsed from just this one little detail that opens up a whole universe of possibil- ities, if we allow time for God to speak to us without too many words. When we allow God the space and the quiet to shine that light in his own directions, the story from the Christmas cards can jump into life in ways we may not expect, just as our ability to see the details in our stained glass windows is dependent on just the right light. This is just one little detail that I have chosen to highlight. What draws your attention as we move towards the completion of our Advent waiting? We light the third Advent candle this week, the pink candle which represents 'joy'. Our waiting is nearly complete as far as the calendar runs, but we must not for- get that Jesus is already with us, and wait- ing for us to turn our eyes to him. Where does he lay now? Perhaps this week we can invite him to rest within our own hearts, allowing him to shine his light where he wants to. Let go, and let God, as they say, and feel the joy!
