Catholics Voice Their Concerns About the Family: Part One He’s coming!! He’s coming!! Yes, it’s true. Pope Francis is coming to Washington, New York, and Philadelphia in September, from the 22 nd to the 27 th . In addition to his speeches, talks, and religious events, he’ll be at the World Meeting on Families, to be held in Philadelphia. Actually, this last part of his U.S. visit was the original reason for his coming here. It’s this meeting, coupled with the Extraordinary Synod on the Family last October and the Synod on the Family this coming October, which makes these past twelve months or so the Year of the Family. This past spring, as a result of the Extraordinary Synod last fall in Rome, discussions among Catholics were held in many dioceses throughout the world about the issues that were raised at that Synod. The feedback from these were then forwarded to Rome for the coming Synod this October. In the Archdiocese of Newark, these meetings were held in April, and late in June, discussions were also held here at St. Anne among our parishioners. Both the diocesan and our parish meetings followed the same format. Four main issues, raised by the world’s bishops at the Synod, were the focus of the discussions: The Family is a Reflection of God’s Love. No Family or Family Member is Beyond God’s Mercy. Married Couples Are Called to Live- out Christ’s Unconditional Love. Modern Life Demands that the Church Minister to Those in Different Lifestyles. In what follows, I’d like to give you the highlights of these two sets of discussions the one from the diocese and the one from St. Anne’s. Obviously, this space limits what can be shared, so I’ll give some of these highlights this week and the rest next week. I hope that both presentations can spark thoughts and suggestions that we can use here to reinforce our families. FOCUS # 1: The Family is a Reflection of God’s Love. The Christian family is a community of faith. It’s the “first church,” the first place in which we all experience the Lord’s love. Both discussions stressed how that love is found in the way members of families learn to share, both within and across generations, to forgive each other, to spend time with each other socially and in religious settings, and in the daily acts of sacrifice and kindness that are essential to people living together in a more or less intimate setting. In addition to these heartfelt joys that families offer, both groups also brought up the challenges families today face. The demands on working parents makes it difficult to create opportunities for “family time.” Their financial strains are only aggravated by a consumer culture that stresses the quality of having things over being with each other. The introduction of cell phones, tablets, personal TV’s, undercuts the family’s ability to be a place where intimate ways of relating are learned and practiced. The overly “scheduled” life of children, in schools, teams, and recreation can interfere with “family time.” Finally, the question was raised how a parish could help families experience themselves as settings where God’s love is first found. Suggestions were made for parishes to develop ways to make liturgies “family friendly,” like our Pray Pen and Launch Pad; make homilies more relevant to family concerns; develop small groups where parents can discuss issues; and offer counseling opportunities for families and or parents facing difficulties. More to follow, so stay tuned….

MEDITATION Bread

BY W. S. MERWIN

for Wendell Berry

Each face in the street is a slice of bread wandering on searching

somewhere in the light the true hunger appears to be passing them by they clutch

have they forgotten the pale caves they dreamed of hiding in their own caves full of the waiting of their footprints hung with the hollow marks of their groping full of their sleep and their hiding

have they forgotten the ragged tunnels they dreamed of following in out of the light to hear step after step

the heart of bread to be sustained by its dark breath and emerge

to find themselves alone before a wheat field raising its radiance to the moon

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Each day the people are to go out and gather

their daily portion; thus will I test them, to

see whether they follow my instructions or

not.” – Exodus 16:4

When the Israelites gathered more than

their daily portion of manna, the surplus

became wormy and rotten. In the same way

today, God calls us to be content with a fair

portion and to be willing to share the rest.

The Pope's intention for August:

...that we may learn to be neighbors to those who find themselves on the margins of human life and society.

BACK TO OUR ROOTS

WILL NOT MEET DURING

JULY & AUGUST.

On many concrete questions, the Church has no reason to offer a definitive opinion; she knows that honest debate must be encouraged among experts, while respecting divergent views. But we must take a frank look at the facts….Hope would have us recognize that there is always a way out, that we can always redirect our steps, that we can always do something to solve our problems. Still, we can see signs that things are now reaching a breaking point.

Pope Francis from his encyclical Laudato Si: On Care for our Common Home including a quotation from

Pope Benedict XVI

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we

become ever more truly the People of God.

Finance/Administration… A Christian community strives to steward its resources so that they can provide the material by which its various

ministries can reflect the parish’s mission to reflect Christ’s presence in all that we do and say. Finance Committee

We are grateful to the1,412 people who worshipped with us last weekend and contributed $10,515.00 in the offertory and $1,749.00 through Online Giving offertory

and $3,269.00 for St. Anne Feast Day, which along with other fees and donations totaled $19,760.00.

Our weekly expenses average out to $21,026.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a

light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.

OR

2. From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says

“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear. Select

the Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.”

When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations.

Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
