St Catharine's College, Cambridge

Check In: From 2pm - 12 midnight Check Out: By 10am

On arrival report to the Porter's Lodge (located at the main entrance to the college) you will be given a key and directed to your room(s). It is generally possible to leave some bags in the small supervision room near the Porters Lodge if your arrival time is before 2pm and your room isn't ready. However please bear in mind that the college cannot be held responsible for any theft or damage to any personal belongings.

University departments, public transport, shops and many of Cambridge's historic buildings are all within easy walking distance.

We regret that car parking is not available at the College.

Arriving by Road: From the M11, take either Junction 11 or 12 and follow into Cambridge City Centre (see the Regional Road Links map). Follow the city signs for public parking as parking is not available at St Catharine's (except for loading and unloading and other special circumstances). The Cambridge Around St Catharine's map shows the location of several public parking areas near the College. There are maps posted around the city which will help you find your way back to the College once you park. Arriving by Rail: The University maintains a schedule of Cambridge to London railway timetables with links to other railway route planners. From the Railway Station one can either walk (about one mile) or take a taxi to St Catharine's. The Railway Station is shown on the Cambridge Around St Catharine's map. The Cambridge City Council also maintains rail information.

Arriving by Air: Cambridge Coach Services run an hourly bus service to and from Stansted, Luton, Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Railway service is also available from Stansted (for more information see Railtrack's web site or from the UK call National Rail Enquiries (0345 48 49 50). The University maintains links to more airport information.

Non British nationals should ensure that they have their passport available when arriving at the College for registration purposes.

All guests are asked to treat college staff and property with respect, and conduct themselves in a manner befitting an historic academic institution, bearing in mind students and tutors may be working and living on site.

Introduction

St Catharine's is a vibrant and successful community of scholars who are delighted to welcome visitors to our city and College.

All the rooms we provide are used during term time by our undergraduate students and are therefore not equipped to hotel standards (i.e. we do not have TVs in our rooms). We can however guarantee clean and comfortable rooms with tea/coffee making facilities; towels and toiletries and complimentary internet access (via ethernet cable). Free WiFi is available in all of our public areas in college.

Although we are a historic building, our Bed & Breakfast accommodation is situated in the new parts of the College. The rooms are situated in different buildings and it would be helpful if you could specify which names would prefer which type of room.

Please also note that the College cannot accommodate babies or children under 16 years old.

Car parking is not available at St Catharines. Please refer to Cambridge Tourist Information Office for further details on parking options in Cambridge.

History to the present day

St Catharine's, or "Catz" as the College is known, was founded in 1473, by Robert Woodlark. He chose a small site next to Kings and a close relationship with that college has been maintained. Originally a small college, it gradually acquired buildings around and was largely rebuilt in the 17th century, with work starting on the Main Court in 1673 and the Chapel being completed in 1704.

Food and Drinks

A hearty traditional English breakfast is served in the College's Great Hall, from 7.45am-9am each day.  On Saturday and Sunday breakfast is extended until 0930.

Guests are very welcome to use the fully licensed College bar.

Other facilities

Internet access is available to guests at no extra charge. Cables for wired access are supplied in each bedroom, or on request from the Porters' Lodge.

Wireless access is available in most public areas.
