2001-2002 UODeansAdvisoryGroup1990-2004 UOGeneralSciencesAdvisoryCommittee2000-2004 UOCarrollVisitingProfessorshipCommittee1993-1999 UOEnvironmentalStudiesAdvisoryCommittee1998-99,1994-97 UOUniversitySenate1997 UOFacultySearchCommitteeforVicePresidentforAcademicAffairs1991-1992 UOStrategicPlanActionTeamonInfrastructure&TechnicalSupport1991-1992 UOOut-of-StateTravelCommittee(CAS)RESEARCHCONTRIBUTIONSIhavetwopassionsthatmotivatemeaspaleoecologist.Thefirstisalifelongcuriositytounderstandhow,whyandwhenecosystemschange.Thisinteresthasledto~185scientificpublications,continuousgrantfundingsince1983,andsuccessfultrainingof35graduatestudentsandsevenpost-docsovermycareer.Informationonthepastiscriticalforassessingthehealthofpresent-dayforestsaswellasforpredictingenvironmentalresponsesinthefuture.Myscientificdiscoveriesonpastecosystemdynamicshaveinformedglobalchangescience,resourcemanagementdecisions,andconservationefforts.Togainknowledgeoftheseinteractionsoverlongtimeframes,myteamanalyzesthefossils(pollen,charcoal,andotherplantremains)andothercomponents(geochemical,lithological)preservedinlakesaroundtheworld.Lakescanbethousandsofyearsold,andtheirsedimentspreservearich,andoftenuntapped,reservoirofecologicalinformationaboutabroaderrangeofenvironmentalconditionsthanwecanobservetoday.Muchofmyresearchhasdrawnonlake-sedimentrecordstoreconstructtheevolutionoftemperateforestsinthewesternU.S.,andcomparableecosystemsinNewZealand,southernSouthAmerica,andAustralia.Theseforestsarehighlyvulnerabletoclimatechange,servingpresentlyasbothcarbonsourcesandcarbonsinks,throughthealterationoffireandotherbioticinteractions.Mystudiesinbothhemisphereshavetracedvegetationdynamicsinresponsetolarge-scaleEarthprocesses,suchasmountainbuildingandglaciationonlongtimescales,aswellastheinfluenceofclimateandpeopleovershortertimespans.MystudentsandIhavedescribedtheconnectionsbetweenclimate,disturbance,andvegetationchange(mostrecentlyinIglesiasetal.,2015;Krauseetal.,2015;IglesiasandWhitlock,2015)andthevulnerabilityoftemperateforesttohuman-setfires(mostrecently,Whitlocketal.2015;McWethyetal.2014).MyresearchinYellowstoneNationalParkduringthefiresof1988hasledtonewmethodsforreconstructinglong-termfirehistories;thesetechniquesareusedaroundtheworld.Overthelast25years,Ihavehelpedbuildaglobalpaleofiresciencecommunity,includingcreatinganinternationaldatabasethatmakesfire-historyinformationavailabletoall.Mysecondpassionistointegratelearninganddiscovery.Mylabhasalwayssupportedalivelygroupofpost-docs,graduatestudents,andpost-docs,andweregularlyhostvisitingscientistsfromaroundtheworld.Ipridemyselfonthefactthat22ofmy35graduatestudentshavebeenwomenandthatmystudentshavegoneontosuccessfulcareersinacademia,government,conservationorganizations,andtheprivatesector.Educationformealsomeansreachingoutsideoftheuniversitytoinformbroaderaudiencesabout

environmentalchange.Inthisregard,Iamco-foundingdirectoroftheMontanaInstituteonEcosystems,astatewideinstitutethatdrawsontheextraordinarylandscapesofMontanaandbeyondtounderstandcomplexecosystemsincludingtheinterconnectednessofpeopleandnature.Currently,weareworkingwithscientists,governmentagencies,localcommunities,andnon-profitorganizationstodevelopthefirstMontanaclimateassessment.Thiseffortispartoflong-termenterprisetoprovideMontanacitizenswithtimelyinformationthataddressesreal-worldenvironmentalchallenges.Stakeholder-drivensciencerequirespublicengagement,andIspendconsiderabletimegivingpubliclectures,fieldingquestions,engagingteachersandstudents,participatinginresourcemanagementandconservationworkshops,andprovidingcommentarytothemedia.Thisbroaderengagementallowsmetosharemyresearchwithothersaswellasstimulateit.ResearchdiscoveriesthatIhaveledorbeenactivelyinvolvedin:

1. Insightsontheevolutionofmodernforestecosystemsandtheirsensitivitytoclimatechangeandhumaninfluences

2. Newmethodsforreconstructingpastfireactivity,whicharenowusedaroundtheworld

3. ImprovedunderstandingofthevegetationandfirehistoryofwesternNorthAmerica,Ireland,southernSouthAmerica,NewZealandandAustraliabasedonpollenandhigh-resolutioncharcoalrecords

4. Informationonecologicalresponsesduringpastperiodswhentheworldwascolderandwarmerthanatpresenttogainunderstandingofclimateextremes

laboratories,helpingfeedexperimentalmiceandrabbits,washingglassware,anddustingskeletons.Myparentsshareadeeplovefortheoutdoorsthatrangesfromreciting19thcenturynaturepoetrytocollectingandmountingbutterflies,andthispassionwaspassedtomytwobrothersandme.Atage14,myfamilymovedtoColoradowhereIwastransformedbytheopportunitytohikeinspectacularmountains,enjoyfieldsofwildflowersandskiindeeppowder.Atthatpoint,IknewthatIwouldneedtofindacareerthatwouldinvolvebothscienceandtheoutdoors.AtColoradoCollege,myfirstclasswasgeologyanditwasaperfectfitforme.AninspiringprofessortaughtusabouttheEarthbydraggingusmountaincliffswherewewereexpectedto“read”therocks.FieldtripstoDinosaurandGreatSandDunesNationalmonumentswillstaywithmeforeverasmomentsofawe,discoveryandunforgettablecamaraderie.Duringmysenioryear,IhadthegoodfortunetoworkwithDr.EstellaLeopold,thefamouspaleoecologistanddaughterofAldoLeopold,whowasthenattheUSGeologicalSurveyinDenver.EstellawasthefirstwomenscientistthatIhadeverworkedwith,andforme,shewasaforceofnature.Herinfectiousenthusiasmforsciencewasevidentinthelab,andherpassionforconservationwasclearthroughherpublicadvocacy.Morethanthat,paleoecologywasanexcitingwaytoblendmyinterestsinearthhistoryandmodernecology.Thisinterdisciplinaryfieldofgeologywasachancetounderstandthepresentbyusingthepastasaguide.IngraduateschoolattheUniversityofWashington,IcontinuedmystudieswithEstellainhernewpositionasDirectoroftheQuaternaryResearchCenter.Ilovedtheopportunitytocombinetheverybestofgraduatestudieswithresearch.MyadvisorsencouragedmetosubmitmyearlydiscoveriestothejournalScience,whereitwaspublishedasasole-authoredpaperandfeaturedonthecover.Whatanintroductiontoacademia!ThetrainingingraduateschoolandlaterasapostdocatTrinityCollegeDublintaughtmemuchaboutrunningaresearchprogramandmentoringstudentsandearly-careerscientists.IhaveappliedtheseskillsinacademicpositionsatCarnegieMuseumofNaturalHistory,UniversityofPittsburgh,UniversityofOregon,andnowatMontanaStateUniversity.IamaProfessorinEarthSciencesandDirectoroftheMSUPaleoecologyLaboratory.Mylabgrouphostsinternationalscientistsinterestedinlearningourtechniquesforreconstructingpastclimate,vegetationandfire.Yellowstoneisinourbackyardandoffersanunparalleledscientificlaboratoryforusbutmygroupworksatfieldsitesaroundtheworld.Ialsoamfoundingco-DirectoroftheMontanaInstituteonEcosystems,thefirststatewideinstitutedesignedtopromoteinterdisciplinaryresearchonpressingenvironmentalchallenges.Inthiscapacity,Ihavebeenabletoguidestate,regionalandnationalagendasonclimatechangeanditsimpacts,hirenewinterdisciplinaryfaculty,andleadmajorresearchandeducationinitiatives.Iamanacademicleaderwhotrulybelievesinserving,andIusemypassionforenvironmentalsciencetoinspireandencourageothers.
