1. Review with students cause and effect. Then discuss words that signal a cause/effect. These are known as causal indicators.

Read orally the following sentences and discuss the highlighted causal indicators.

• My stomach was rumbling because I had not eaten breakfast.

I had not eaten breakfast (cause) My stomach was rumbling (effect)

• David’s tire was flat this morning so he had to take a taxi to work. David’s tire was flat (cause) He had to take a taxi (effect)

• My eyes and nose were red since I had cried uncontrollably. I had cried uncontrollably (cause) My eyes and nose were red (effect)

Teaching  Instructions

A  Cause  is  WHY  something  happens.

An  Effect  is  WHAT  happens.

Causal  Indicators

If,  then,  since,  so,  therefore,  because

2. Discuss the following paragraph with students. Highlight or underline the causal indicators that are used and discuss what causes things to happen. (some examples are below the paragraph)

Allen  suddenly  awoke  because  his  alarm  clock  was  ringing  loudly.    Before  leaving  for  work  he  created  a  “to  do”  list.    If  he  didn’t  make  a  list  he  would  surely  forget  something  he  might  need.    Since  making  his  own  lunch  was  unusual  he  put  this  as  number  1  on  his  list.    He  would  need  to  make  his  lunch  so  he  could  remain  at  work  through  his  lunch  break.    Next  on  his  list  was  remembering  his  gym  clothes  and  tennis  shoes.    Then  if  he  was  running  late  he  could  skip  stopping  at  home  first.    With  his  list  complete  he  was  then  ready  for  his  day.

! What caused Allen to awake? (alarm clock) ! Why did Allen make a “to do” list? (so he wouldn’t forget things) ! What caused Allen to be ready for his day? (his completed list)

3. Review the definition of cause (why something happens) and effect (what happens). Reinforce that causal indicators help readers identify when a cause and effect relationship is occurring. Hand out the “Cause and Effect” sheet for students to work on independently.

Possible  answers:  Charlie  and  his  family  will  now  be  able  to  eat  and  live  comfortably  instead  of  starving  and  freezing  in  the  winter  months.    He  could  become  famous  for  his  new  candy  inventions.    He  would  be  wealthy  instead  of  poor.    Charlie  could
