The full effect of the sanctions would need to take a year. 3. The US felt that this was too lo ng a wait to get Iraq out of Kuwait. 4. Moreover , sanctions will o nly work if all UN members strictly adhered to them. 5. Ther e was alwa ys a possibility of some countries ignoring the sanctions for economic gains. 6. The Sec urity Co uncil voted to use force to remove Iraq from Kuwait eventually. Failure of Diplomatic Measures 1. The Arab Lea gue had voted to condemn the actions of Iraq, but it was ineffective as the member countries were divided among themselves what to do. 2. The UN tr ied to sen d ambassa dors to negotiate with Iraq, but failed. 3. A deadline was given to Iraq to withdraw while ambassadors tried for the last time. 4. When th eir atte mpts fail ed again, the UN eventually voted to use force to liberate Kuwait, resulting in the Gulf War. Fear of Iraqi Dominance 1. Countries in the wo rld feared Iraq’s dominance over the world’s supply of oil. 2. After the invasion of Kuwai t, Iraq controlled 20% of the world’s oil production. 3. The ease of Kuwait’ s invasion might encourage Iraq to be even more aggressive and invade other countries. 4. Thus, Iraq will be able to set a high price for the oil and solve their own economic problems. 5. This in tu rn wil l creat e problems for the world economy. 6.
