The Foundation Once Again Thanks Dr. Steven Hymovitch and

Valley Endodontics! For the second year (and flag!) in a row, we are honored to spotlight Dr. Steven Hymovitch, and acknowledge his generosity and enthusiasm. We visited Dr. Hymovitch to personally thank him for his continued support and ask him a few questions about his practice and his involvement with the Foundation’s Annual Golf4Smiles Tournament.

Dr. Hymovitch has had his practice in Phoenix since 1996, when he established Valley Endodontic Specialty Group, now the largest endodontic practice in Arizona with nine offices (seven in Phoenix and two in Tucson). After meeting Dr. Hymovitch, one can see how his humor, enthusiasm, compassion, and commitment to his patients has not only helped him achieve success, but has also gained him the reputation as one of the most respected endodontic specialists in the state.

In addition to giving back to the community through the Foundation’s Golf4Smiles Tournament, Dr. Hymovitch, his practice, and his family give back in other ways as well -- from providing treatment at no cost to uninsured patients, to the Hymovitch family involvement in efforts to eliminate breast cancer. When Dr. Hymovitch isn’t being a super doc, he’s being a super soccer dad. With 5 children ranging from age 4 – 13, Dr. Hymovitch says it’s important to spend as much quality time with them as he can.

We think a great day with the family would be on the golf course in May! How ‘bout it Dr. H? You’ve practically got two foursomes with just the Hymovitch gang alone!

Thank you Dr. Hymovitch for your continued support, to the Foundation and the community!

Mr. Blasdell explained how Accutron’s sedation products help young dental patients. Sedation helps children relax and feel more comfortable, and when children (or anyone for that matter!) are more comfortable, apprehension and discomfort are minimized, and the child can comfortably participate in treatment. In line with Accutron’s goal of helping young patients, the company will soon be releasing a new product just for kids – colored and scented sedation products.

The Foundation would like to again thank Mr. Blasdell, Accutron, and the whole Accutron family, for supporting the Foundation’s Annual Tournament since 2008! We look forward to seeing the Accutron flag flying high again at this year’s Golf4Smiles Tournament, on May 11th!

Humor, enthusiasm, compassion,

and commitment to

his patients.

Henry Schein strives to provide innovative, integrated healthcare products and services, but the company does much more than that. Along with its social responsibility efforts and achievements, Kevin explained the company’s dedication to provid-ing dentists and dental offices EVERYTHING they need to succeed; not just providing products. Through helping with global disasters, national and statewide oral health efforts, right down to helping each and every dentist’s office they touch, Henry Schein gives back!

Henry Schein and its staff have been supporting the Foundation and its Golf Tournament for 5 years running. One of the most valuable of “contributions” the Foundation receives from Henry Schein, is the Chairman of our Golf Tournament, Keith Gauzza, Business Development Manager at Henry Schein. This will be Keith’s second year serving as Golf Committee Chair, in addition to serving on the Foundation’s Board of Directors and Grants Committee. The word enthusiasm doesn’t do the man justice…. Come out and play in this year’s tournament, and challenge Keith to the putting or chipping contest. We dare ya!

Henry Schein (including Kevin Upchurch, Keith Gauzza, and staff) prove Giving Back Works! In business for over 79 Years, with over 190,000 products, and 700,000 customers, Henry Schein continues to be a global leader in the industry. With admi-ration and thanks, we say Let it Schein! Let it Schein! Let it Schein!

Thank You to Kevin Upchurch and our Golf Contest Sponsor, Henry Schein Dental!“We love the Golf Tournament and look forward to it every year. We love what it does for kids.”

This sentiment coming from Kevin Upchurch comes as no surprise, especially after learning more about Henry Schein’s corporate culture -- one of social responsibility, not only locally, but nationally and globally. Henry Schein has been rated number one of Forbe’s Fortune 500 companies in their category for Social Responsibility; and since 2006, has been voted one of the World’s Most Admired Companies by FORTUNE Magazine.

Thank You Richard Feldhake, DMD! Richard Feldhake, DMD, has been practicing in Arizona for 25 years, and was featured in Phoenix Magazine as a 2011 Top Dentist. To be recognized by a large number of his peers (with 1,500 Valley dentists surveyed, requesting nominations of fellow dentists who, in their judgment, are the best in their field) is not only an honor, but an indication that Dr. Feldhake shares the Foundation’s passion for oral health and its importance to individuals, families, and the community.

This dedication to the issue of oral health is evident in Dr. Feldhake’s continued support of the Foundation’s Golf4Smiles Tournament, as well his many other charitable activities, including serving special needs patients in his Glendale and Scottsdale offices, working with Special Olympics, and donating dental services through the Arizona Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile events. Dr. Feldhake explains his many efforts by telling us he “loves Arizona, dentistry, and his patients.”

Having 4 children of his own, ranging from age 6 to 23, Dr. Feldhake feels that being able to find ways to help children right now is critical, given the cuts in funding and insurance coverage and kids often not getting the dental care they need. Participating in the Foundation’s Golf4Smiles Tournament each year is one way he has chosen, so generously, to help.

Dr. Feldhake’s staff gets involved as well! Nicole Griffin, Dr. Feldhake’s Office Manager, serves on the Golf Tournament Com-mittee, Raffle Committee, and volunteers at the event itself.

Our heartfelt admiration and thanks go out to Dr. Feldhake and his staff for their generosity and continued support of the Foundation and its Tournament each year. We look forward to another great Tournament in May!

“We love the Golf Tournament and

look forward to it every year.”

“I love Arizona, dentistry, and my patients.”

An Unforgettable Day of Golf & Giving!

Page 5: Cavity Free Press - Fall 2011

With the help of a magnificent group of sponsors, golfers, community volunteers, and friends of the Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation, some of which are featured in this Special Golf Edition Newsletter, the Foundation’s 6th Annual Golf4Smiles Tournament raised over $76,000 for essential children’s dental health services and programs in Arizona. That’s enough money to apply sealants to nearly 1,700 children, or varnish the teeth of 7,600 pre-school children, and significantly reduce their risk of untreated tooth decay in their future.

The Tournament took place this past May at the world class Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, with the proceeds going directly towards vital oral health programs and services for thousands of uninsured and underinsured children in Arizona. Unlike many nonprofit organizations, through Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation, 100% of contributions received are used for programs and services in the community (NOT administrative costs). This allows donors the satisfaction that every penny they contribute is used entirely for programs that serve children.

In a post-tournament survey, 100% of those who responded said they would participate again, and/or recommend a friend. Some of the comments from the survey include:

“Awesome production!!”

“Great staff, beautiful course!”

“Excellent event, venue, process, etc….

Had a great time!”

“This was the best run, best organized outing I have played….”

“Good event and good cause!”

Thank you again to our sponsors, participants, and volunteers. We so deeply appreciate the generous gift of your time, your talents, and your treasures to help us make a significant impact on the oral health of children throughout our state.

For additional information, including details on the 2012 Golf4Smiles Tournament, to be held again at Grayhawk Golf Club on Friday, May 11, please contact the Foundation at 602-588-3922 or visit www.golf4smiles.org.

Thank You DENTSPLY and Tim Newlin, Key Account Manager!

This is Tim Newlin and DENTSPLY’s first year supporting the Foundation’s Golf4Smiles Tournament, but certainly not their first or only charitable work. DENTSPLY, the largest dental equipment manufacturer in the world, donates supplies and equipment to the underprivileged worldwide. They are also involved in the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s efforts, provide grants to dental schools, as well as many other philanthropic activities.

For over a century, DENTSPLY International has been committed to providing the global dental community with innovative, high quality,

Thank you Thunderbirds’ Birdies for Charity! The Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation was part of the golf action at the Waste Management (WM) Phoenix Open this past February at TPC Scottsdale, home of the Phoenix Open. The Foundation raised over $38,000 through the Thunderbirds “Birdies for Charity” Program.

The Birdies for Charity Program centers around the PGA Tour professionals making birdies—lots of them!—during the WM Phoenix Open. Potential donors did not need to be much of a golfer, or even a golf fan, to participate in Birdies for Charity.

How it works: If donors pledge just ONE PENNY for every birdie made at the Open, the pledge would amount to about $15. Two cents pledged would be about $30. It’s that simple. As an added bonus, Thunderbirds Charities matches (gives us!) 10% above and beyond the total amount of pledges we collect.

As the number ONE fundraising nonprofit participating in Birdies last year, the Foundation was invited to host the Birdies for Charity booth for an entire day at the 2011 WM Phoenix Open Expo Tent, providing additional opportunities for fundraising during a high traffic time of the Tournament.

The Foundation’s group of enthusiastic volunteers gave out over 8,000 toothbrushes and 2,500 chatter teeth while sharing information about the Foundation’s work throughout the state.

If you would like to make a pledge and participate in the Foundation’s Birdies for Charity campaign this year, or you would like additional information about the Birdies program, please contact the Foundation at 602-588-3922, [email protected] or visit the Foundation’s website.

cost effective dental products; has been a dedicated champion of the dental industry, and a long-time advocate of clinical education. From their humble beginnings in 1899, the company has grown to become one of the largest professional dental products companies in the world. Worldwide, dental professionals now depend upon DENTSPLY for innovative, new solutions that advance the practice of dentistry and improve oral health for patients throughout the world.

Tim Newlin has been a Key Account Manager for DENTSPLY, serving schools and large group practices, for five years. In speaking with Tim, we could feel his enthusiasm for DENTSPLY being able to participate in the Foundation’s Golf4Smiles Tournament, helping the Foundation fulfill its mission of improving oral health for Arizona’s children. He commented on how lucky he feels to not only help kids personally, through his hockey coaching activities, but to be able to make a difference to kids within his career path as well, through DENTSPLY’s participation in the Foundation’s Tournament.

We feel lucky too, Tim! Thank YOU and DENTSPLY for being such generous supporters of the Foundation, its mission, and the Annual Golf4Smiles Tournament!

Boys & Girls Club of Metro Phoenix and Boys & Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale

The funds raised from our Golf4Smiles Tournament go directly to programs that serve children and adolescents. In 2010-11 the Foundation made grants to 18 organizations totaling $222,720 through the Community Grants Program. Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale are just two of the

Thank You Rosie McCaffrey’s Irish Pub, Our Special Event SponsorThe Foundation, with the help of over 35 shamrock-studded volunteers, raised $11,000 for essential dental services and programs for Arizona children through the St. Patrick’s Day event at Rosie McCaffrey’s Irish Pub & Restaurant on Camelback Road in Phoenix.

Rosie McCaffrey’s was the Foundation’s “Special Event Sponsor” at this year’s Golf4Smiles Tournament, having designated the Foundation as the recipient of the restaurant’s VERY special event held each year at the Pub!

And because Rosie’s pledged the proceeds through the Thunderbirds’ Birdies for Charity Program, the Foundation brought in an additional 10% in funding through the St. Pattie’s Day bash!We hope you’ll put on your green at Rosie’s in March, get out on the green at our Tournament in May, and shell out some green at both of these FUN Foundation fundraising events!

Debbie Holaday and Tracey Thompson, Affiliated Practice Hygienists, volunteers, and friends of the Foundation, help out at Rosie McCaffrey’s.

Foundation’s worthy grantees:

Founded in 1998, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix Dental Clinic provides comprehensive dental services to some 650 children per year aged 5 – 18. All patients served are from low-income families and lack dental insurance. Patients come to the Clinic from all parts of Phoenix and beyond, referred by school nurses, health clinics and word of mouth. The Clinic’s Outreach Program includes oral health education, dental screening and referrals. It is anticipated that some 1,140 children and youth will be screened through the Outreach Program this year.

Since first providing youth programs more than 54 years ago, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale (BGCGS) service population has grown from one facility serving 258 boys to serving more than 16,000 boys and girls last year through nine Clubhouse locations and twelve outreach sites. BGCGS stretches beyond the borders of Scottsdale into Fountain Hills, Northeast Phoenix, Mesa, the Hualapai Indian Community and the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community.

With grants provided by the Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation, both organizations are able to provide the Cavity Free Zone program to at-risk youth populations in Metropolitan Phoenix, South Scottsdale, and American Indian youth residing on the Hualapai Indian Community. Cavity Free Zone is a comprehensive oral health education program developed by Crest and Boys & Girls Clubs of America to promote oral health and teach youth about the importance of proper diet,

brushing techniques, and ways to maintain healthy smiles.

As a result of the Foundation-funded program, youth will practice brushing and flossing to improve their hygiene techniques; learn to make dental hygiene a part of their daily lives; value the connection between a healthy diet and healthy teeth; learn the risks associated with oral piercings, dieting and tobacco use as well as the importance of mouth guards in contact sports; and hopefully, youth will recognize the valuable role of dentists in their lives.
