Royal Charity’s plea for Ceredigion Expertise A Royal Charity that has supported over 5000 older people in Wales in their search for employment appeals to people in Ceredigion who have experience in the Private and Public sector business to join their team of volunteer mentors and share their skills and experiecne to help people aged 50+ who are looking for employment and self-employment opportunities.
PRIME Cymru was founded by HRH the Prince of Wales in 2001 and has offered free advice to over 5000 people, helping to launch 1200 businesses and create over 1800 jobs. The charity has recently appointed a new Development Officer for Ceredigion, Louise Draycott in order to expand their team of volunteer mentors. Louise, pictured below explains: Just a few hours a month can really make a difference towards helping people increase their confidence, overcome barriers and make positive changes in the direction of their lives. Our aim is to expand our level of support for those people aged 50+ who are economically inactive but to achieve this we need to expand our team of volunteer mentors. We offer free professional training for all our mentors and reimburse travel expenses and appeal to anyone who can volunteer a few hours a month to help.
Anyone who can support the charity or who wants to benefit from help provided by the scheme should contact PRIME Cymru free on: 0800 5874085 or contact Louise direct on Tel: 01550 721813email: For further informaton about PRIME Cymru their website address is:

New opportunity to access Engagement Gateway funding‘PQQ’ Briefing session to be held in Lampeter.
Organisations across Wales are being given another opportunity to access funding from WCVA’s Engagement Gateway project.
The Gateway aims to reduce economic inactivity in Wales by improving the employability of people who face barriers to employment and are furthest from the labour market. The scheme will invest £34m in organisations that support disadvantaged and economically inactive people by developing their skills and confidence. The outcomes of the contracts will be negotiated with WCVA but organisations that are tendering can design the activities that best suit the groups they work with.
To become eligible for Gateway contracts of between £25,000 and £150,000, organisations can now join the project’s approved supplier list by submitting a pre qualification questionnaire (PQQ) by 2pm on 24 January 2011. The PQQ is available from www.sell2wales.co.uk
Organisations whose PQQ meets the assessment criteria will be able to tender for contracts from March 2011.
CAVO are holding a PQQ briefing session which will provide advice and guidance on the PQQ process at 10am, Wednesday 10th November 2010, at the CAVO office, Lampeter. To book a place, or for further information, please contact:Teleri Davies, Engagement Gateway Local [email protected] 423 232

Volunteering for Health Drop In Sessions – December 2010
The Hywel Dda Local Health Board was recently awarded a grant from the National Lottery to set up, develop and deliver a project known as ‘Volunteering for Health’. The project will develop volunteering services within the health community of West Wales in a variety of settings for example; acute, mental health, learning disabilities, community services and primary care in Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire. The project will improve the way current health services are delivered for the benefit of local citizens through action by local citizens.
For volunteers it will provide an opportunity to give something back to the community, help them explore a career in health and social care, maintain and develop new skills, increase social interaction by meeting new people, enable volunteers to be recognised as a valuable resource and an integral part of service delivery within the NHS.
For the Hywel Dda Health Board it will help build on partnership working, develop stronger links with voluntary organisations delivering services for or on behalf on the NHS, provide a coordinated and cohesive approach for voluntary activities, increase standards and the quality of care, as local people become more involved it will enable the community to create stronger links with the NHS, improve local skills, improve health and wellbeing and help toward the retention of young people.
If you would like to more about the project, find out about volunteering with the project or if your organization would like to explore ways of working with the project we’d be pleased to hear from you.Thank you

CAVO Volunteering CAVO 2010
If you think you might like a career working in the outdoor environment and are looking for training to improve your practical skills, why not take advantage of this initiative. The aim of the Engagement Gateway initiative is to enable disengaged young people, 16 - 25 years, who are not in employment, education or training, to develop the confidence and skills to follow pathways to employment and become active members of their community. The 2-year initiative will see groups of young people, led by Tir Coed approved tutors, being trained, for 2 days per week over a 3 month period, at woodland sites with public access in Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, in two key stages:
4 days of taster sessions - including 1 green woodwork and countryside management workshops that will enable young people to focus on improving their confidence, communication and problem solving skills. These skills will be developed by means of small, achievable tasks, such as crafting an item from wood that they can take home with them. In addition, the informal atmosphere during breaks around the campfire will help young people to talk openly about issues within their lives that they may not
normally feel able to discuss and which may be a barrier to participation.
Accredited courses - Work-based skills training will be matched with 2maintenance and improvement projects in the local community; this will involve woodland and countryside management, as well as making rustic furniture from wood, building wildlife hides and boardwalks and improving access to green spaces. Tir Coed has developed Woodland and Countryside Skills courses that offer a framework of Open College Network (OCN) accredited units. These courses are designed to further develop the vocational skills of participants, as well as progressing team work and organisational skills.A Mentor will help young people overcome any barriers to participation and full engagement. Working with the young people, local land-based small businesses and with other agencies, the Mentor will develop an exit route for each young person, based on progression to further learning, volunteer/work placements or employment in their chosen field of interest.

CAVO Volunteering CAVO 2010
volunteered at ICAVO over the
school summer
holiday. I was a
bit anxious as I
had never
worked in an
office before. Everyone was very
nice and made me feel relaxed
straight away. During my time there
I helped out at a play event in
Aberaeron, wrote an article for the
CAVO website about the play event,
I used the telephone and e-mailed to
contact people and I worked on the
database. It is definitely worth
volunteering because I learnt new
skills and developed ones I already
had. CAVO really made me part of
the team from the very beginning.
On my last day they even bought
cake to thank me for my work!
