VIMS is looking for students (rising 3rd grade through high school) who have an interest in the Chesapeake Bay! VIMS will be offering week-long, hands-on, summer marine science camps that will enable the student to learn, first hand, about the Chesapeake Bay. All camps are tailored to meet the learning stages of each age and are free thanks to private donors. Summer Science Camps 2019 3rd & 4th Grade: Bay Buddies August 12-16, 2019 Rising 3rd and 4th grade students will learn about ways to protect and preserve the Chesapeake Bay environment. Students will seine in the York River, use microscopes, play outdoor games, use field guides, make crafts, and complete projects that will benefit the Chesapeake Bay. To apply, complete and return application by April 1, 2019. Camp enrollment will be completed via a lottery system. 24 students maximum. 5th & 6th Grade: Chesapeake Champions August 19-23, 2019 Rising 5th and 6th grade students will study and explore different habitats within the watershed. Campers will participate in many hands-on activities including, canoeing and seining in the York River, squid dissection, and using a variety of scientific tools including water quality equipment and microscopes to learn about the Chesapeake Bay. To apply, complete and return application and students’ statement of interest by April 1, 2019. 24 students will be selected. 7th & 8th Grade: Estuary Explorers July 29- August 2, 2019 This week-long camp will allow rising 7th and 8th grade students to investigate and explore the Chesapeake Bay in depth on both the Gloucester Point VIMS campus and on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Students will visit both the Bay and ocean side of the Eastern Shore aboard vessels, canoe, explore barrier islands and mud flats, collect animals, dissect a shark, and examine marine organisms in the lab, and more! Students will stay at the VIMS Eastern Shore Laboratory dorms in Wachapreague, VA for one night where food, lodging, and transportation will be provided. The rest of the week will be a day camp on the Gloucester Point campus. To apply, complete and return application and students’ statement of interest by April 1, 2019. 14 students will be selected. 9th-12th Grade: NERRs Nerds July 15-19, 2019 High school students will spend a week focusing on careers in marine science and expanding their knowledge on the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Students selected as NERRs Nerds will also serve as Junior Counselors for one full week of summer camp at either Bay Buddies, Chesapeake Champions, or Estuary Explorers camp, assisting education staff with activities. This leadership program will allow students to add research and education to their resume, and give them hands on experiences for discovering possible career fields. To apply, complete and return application and students’ statement of interest by April 1, 2019. If selected, students may be asked to take part in an interview as part of the second round of applications. 11 students will be selected.
