Parents of Teen-Agers Have Date Tonight

Just VisitingBy Lora S. Britt

All parents of teen-agers in Boca Ratonhav( an appointment tonight at the LionsClub. Their presence can mean the con-tinuance of a fine bit of work for the localpeople* Their absence may mean the endof something worthwhile for their own off-spring.

The director of the Teen Age Center andthe teen-agers themselves urgently ask forthe attendance of all parents in the com-munity.

So serious is the plea that parents canscarcely turn a deaf ear to it. The words ofthe Teen Age Center scribe, elsewhere inthis paper, will reach deep into the con-science of all parents who want to helptheir sons and daughters.

The Teen Age Center in Boca Raton is an

out-of-the-ordinary operation and one thatdeserves the support of parents and friends. The young people of this center have manag-ed to operate with very little financial assis-tance from the outside. The Lions Club hasbeen a friend indeed to these teen-agers inneed of a place to stage some of their activ-ities.

In almost every other community, munici-pal assistance is being provided in the formof paid workers, paid orchestras, etc.

Not so here in Boca Raton. These youngpeople have done the work themselves. Thecommunity should be so proud of them for itthat everyone, particularly parents, shouldlend help to make it possible for die TeenAge Center to continue.

Boca Couple ReturnFrom Nassau Visit

A cruise from Miami on theS.S. Queen of Nassau to Nassau,Bahamas, a surrey ride throughthe narrow streets of picturesqueNassau, a glass bottom boatride to beautiful, tropical Para-dise Beach are among the ex-periences Mr. and'Mrs. LeRoyE. Leech of 250 N.W. 20th Street, will long remember.

Cruising with «them were Mr.and Mrs. Fred Harris, 951 Engle-wood Road, Cleveland Heights,Ohio. The cruise was a birthday'celebration for the two women.

They also had time to bargainwith the natives in the strawmarkets, browse through thetypical British shops on theduty-free island and enjoy thecalypso beat of the native nightlife.

Of course no one has anydoubt about the growth of BocaRaton, but if there were somequestion in his mind about therapid rate in which the town isIncreasing in size, he need onlytake a look at the paper today.

First of all Postmaster DonMcDermott's figures for the firstthree months of the year show anincrease of almost $5,000 overthe same period in 1955. This issignificant, because the postalreceipts of any community are abarometer of the town's businessactivity.

Then there are stories on theorganization of two new civicclubs, the Kiwanis and the Ju-nior Chamber of Commerce. Thisalso helps point out that thetown i s growing.

The two new clubs should begood for Boca Raton to help theLions Club with many civic re-sponsibilities which will multi-ply rapidly with more and morebusiness men in the community.

The Lions Club has carriedout its work so well during i tsyears here, that a high standardof achievement has been set forBoca Raton. The two new organ-izations can be expected tohelp in an expanding civic pro-gram so essential to the life ofa growing and progressive town.

A much bewildered man stop-ped at the office the other after-noon looking for a certain num-ber on Palmetto Rd. He thoughthe might locate it by askingwhat the Boca Raton News officewas. It was embarrassing to have to

admit that I could not rememberthe number, nor could I find itover the door.

He said he had been having

so much trouble trying to locatethe man for whom he was lookingthat he suggested a campaign tosee that homes and businessesare properly marked. I remember-ed that the people working on£compiling the city directory re-cently made the same complaint.Often there were no • numbers, they said, and again the num-bers were not in right sequenceor seemed to be totally unrelatedto one another.

The man's suggestion is prob-ably one that deserves someattention.

After all Boca Raton is grow-ing so fast that it is practicallyimpossible to identify one's^Jhouse any longer by saying thatit is the first pink house afterthe two-story stucco beyond theSmith's. (Does anyone answer tothat description? I hope not be-cause as they say in the movies,"Any similarity to . . . . isstrictly coincidental.").

Mrs. Babb and "Pen Pal"Meet Here for First TimeIt was- a wairu welcome that

Mrs. Russell Broxham-of Roches-ter, i N.Y., received when shecalled upon Mrs. Nicky Babb, local Welcome Wagon hostess,Tuesday afternoon.

The two women, who havebeen friends since their, teen-age years "met for the first time.

Mrs. Babb relates the follow-ing account:

Before World War IT, Mrs. Babb, the former Nicky Legiand, wasliving in Paris. While a student, she began a correspondence withMary Jane Luescher (now Mrs.Broxham). The girls became goodfriends by.letters exchanged be-tween Pads and Rochester.

Then in 1939 came the war andall letter writing between thetwo was stopped because of war-

time restrictions. When thewarwas ended, Nicky and Mary Janetook up again where they hadleft off and they were both happyto be able to correspond witheach other again.

In 1946, Nicky married Irvin C.Babb, one of the Americans sta-tioned in Paris, and she came tothe United States with her hus-band upon his return.

The women continued to writeto each other and it kept MaryJane busy trying to remembereach new address of Nicky, be-cause the Babbs moved manytimes during those years, butnever near Rochester. TheBabbs came here several yearsago from D etroit.

Tuesday afternoon, an unfami-liar voice called Nicky on thetelephone. It'was Mary Jane. She.and her husband, who werespending a few days in Miami, would like to call upon her.

Mary Jane had not writtenNicky in advance because shefeared her father's illness mightprevent her from coming to Flor-ida and she did not want to dis-appoint her friend.

But Nicky Babb had no com-plaint about the Broxhana'svisit being a surprise. She wastoo thrilled at finally meetingthe friend to whom she had writ-ten for so many years.

Boca Youths Here \For Easter Holidays

Tom Butts and Butch Meyer !were among the college studentshome for the Easter holidays.

Butts attends the Universityof Florida. Pete Whiteheadof Bradenton, and Vic Marshall .of Pennsylvania, classmates ofTom, were house guests at theButts home.

Butch Meyer is a student at;Palm Beach Junior College, jWest Palm Beach. I

I really don't have to tell youall about this past week-end, be-cause I think everyone knowswhat happened.

Friday evening, 15, (yes, only15) went to the skating party inWest Palm. Again, I say I don'tknow what's the matter. No onewants to co-operate and supportthe Teen Age Center any more.At our meetings you all know wevote on everything we want to do,but when it comes time to do it,no one shows up. What goeshere???

Saturday night we had our Eas-ter dance and about 50 teen-agers were there. We were veryglad that so many kids turnedout and. supported this dance. As for the "rest" I am notgoing to mention it because bynow everyone knows that theTeen Age Center is closed untilfurther notice.

At our meeting last week, wedecided on this following idea:On the Saturday evening thatfalls at the end of the month,we are going to have a celebra-tion for everyone who had abirthday in that month. We willcelebrate this by giving themeach a cake and.pass out refresh-ments to everyone. This lastmonth we honored Bea and PatsyManning, Bill*Brendle and DickDimon. If we ever start the TeenAge Center again, this will beone of our monthly features.

This Saturday afternoon wewill have our usual movie. Thisweek's feature will be "Sahara,"starring Humphrey Bogart. We

will be looking for all you kidsSaturday afternoon at 2 p.m. atthe Lion's Club.

At the special meeting heldMonday evening in the City Hall,it was decided that the firststep toward reopening the TeenAge Center would be to have ameeting of all the parents. Thismeeting will be held tonight at8 P.m. at the Lion's dub. At thismeeting, we. will try to organizethe parents.

Help is not only needed tosponsor the Teen Age Center, but also to chaperone It. Fail-ure of the parents to get behindthe Teen Age Center is one ofthe reasons why we are now clos-ed. This meeting is very inpor-tant to the future of our center,so all you kids urge your par-ents or anyone interested to bethere.
