Fall is now just a few days away and the competition for the last spots for the Finals are heating up. Good Luck to everyone.

July was a tough month but thanks to the patience of everyone we got through it.

Special thanks to Myrna Hunter our causal, who got thrown into full time duty and had to learn how to make draws and do results and payouts on the fly, she really worked hard and extra long hours for the CCA to keep thing moving. Debbie

Grant who had just started and had to run the RIDE program without any training and she did an incredible job learning how to enter everything into RIDE and get the files to upload on the website..we had some hiccups but it got done. Also thanks to Kelly Brice who put some extra days in to help with getting results and payouts caught up.

It wasn’t long before the 3 of us, with some long days, got all the results standings and payouts up to date.

Jody Weinrauch started as the new Rodeo Administrator August 5 and her bio is in the paper and she is catching on really fast.

As the end of the season nears we start doubling up the workload getting organized for the Finals so watch for information as it rolls out.

Mark

In order to get more and better coverage through the media of the CCA we need some leads of human interest stories of some of the Finalists coming to Regina.

Stories of perseverance, overcoming some struggles, successes..or of their work and efforts in other areas of their community.

The media needs a story and they will cover more if we have something for them

Just call or email the office with any leads, anonymity is assured.

General Manager Report

I hope this finds everyone well as we start the chase for the finals. This been an exciting, yet challenging year so far. With the announcement of some new sponsors that have partnered with the CCA, its making our future look very bright. With their support we will be able to continue to better our association in the upcoming years.

I was very happy to finally be able to finalize our contract extension with CWA for one more year that will give us a

better ability and time to negotiate a long term contract that is good for both parties. In the office to say the least was not so much fun. With staff turnover and computer program problems it made it hard on all the staff (old and new) and a bit of a nightmare. But with the great work of our staff and long days they were able to make it all work. I would like to thank them for all their hard work. I would also like to thank the directors that were there to help out in the office while we worked through the bugs. Without your commitment we would have had an even longer road to travel.

Be assured that all the CCA office and directors are committed to making the CCA the best it can be and with continued help and support will only make the CCA better.

Good luck out there and stay in the middle

Shylo Claypool

Contestant Entry Information Online entries through our website can be

made as early as 7pm on the Wednesday prior to entry day. You MUST HAVE a MEMBERSHIP NUMBER to use the online entry system. A confirmation email will be sent to you at the completion of your entry. Membership #’s, names, and events for all contestants that you are entering must be given, including 1st and 2nd preferences, and who is heading or heeling for the Team Roping entries. There is a link on the CCA Website Entry page with a form to use if you wish to fax your entries or you can call 1.800.667.9444 to enter. CUTOFF for all entries will be 2:30pm (Local Time) on the day of entries.

Local entries are non-members hold NO cards in any other association and are living n the that rodeos' trading area.

Non-member entries are non CCA members but hold a card in any other association.

Here are some guidelines that MUST be followed when submitting entries:

1.Local contestants MUST call the local entry number to enter. Any carded member wishing to enter with a local MUST enter all their events for that rodeo through the local entry line. Please refer to the entry information for local entry numbers.

2.NON-member entries must be made on entry day through the office

3.Roughstock contestants are NOT ALLOWED to pick SLACK as a preference.

4.Contestants must give TWO DIFFERENT preferences or an OUT. Cannot pick two preferences that are the same.

5.Contestants are NOT ALLOWED to ask for different preferences for different events.

6.Contestants are NOT ALLOWED to enter one rodeo with one group and another rodeo with a different group.

7.ALL contestants in a buddy group MUST ask for the SAME PREFERENCES. Up to four contestants and four junior tags are allowed to buddy together. Team Roping partners are only considered part of the buddy group if they are entering another event in addition to Team Roping.

8.Only the person who made the entry is allowed to make changes to that group’s entry. If you want to be added to a group, then you must have the person who made the entry call in and add you.

9.DO NOT submit multiple or duplicate entries. Decide who is going to make the entry for the group and have only one person submit the entry using only one of

the methods available. Multiple entries for the same person or group is not an efficient process for the office and takes valuable time away from staff answering the entry line.

10.ALL FINES MUST BE CLEARED PRIOR TO ENTRY DAY. This includes fines owed to CCA and any other associations. Anyone paying CCA fines on entry day will be charged an additional $50 administration fee.

11.The ENTRY LINE is RESTRICTED to ENTRIES ONLY. If you have other CCA business, please call the main line after Monday

RIDE System The RIDE system was developed to create

the draw based on priority levels and to balance the entries between performances. The RIDE system takes the manual manipulation and any possibility of cheating or special favors out of creating the draw If you do not receive your preference it is because the system had to randomly move somebody. Your options are to TRADE or TURN OUT. The office cannot and will not alter the Final draw once it has been posted.

Callback Policy The UNOFFICIAL draws will now be

posted on our website no later than Wednesday evening at 5:00PM following entry day Monday. Please use it to find your individual draw day and time. Call backs can be made from the time the draw is posted until THURSDAY 1pm local time to report ERRORS ONLY.

NOTE: An “error” refers to being missed in the draw, buddy group being split up throughout performances, or entered in the wrong event.

DO NOT call the office if you did not get your 1st or 2nd preference. This is not a viable reason. According to . ENTRY STATISTICS, an average of 74% of people who entered received their 1st preference, 22% received their 2nd preference, and only 4% did not get either of their preferences.

The OFFICIAL draw will be posted Friday morning and is FINAL

New in 2014 There is a $ 25.00 fee for using the OUT on entry The Rodeo count for Roughstock raised from 10 to 15 Jr. Steer riding age raised from 14 to 15 Novice whistle raised from 6 to 8 seconds

Turn Outs If you have to Turn Out, you MUST call

the Turn Out Line at 306.721.2705 and leave a message.

Turnouts must be made by 11:00 a.m. prior to that days performance

If a slack is before 11:00 a.m. then the turnout must be the day before.

For Dual Approved Rodeos, you MUST call the LEAD Association to Turn Out.

If you Turn Out using a Medical or Vet Release, you MUST send a Doctor or Vet note to the CCA office within 10 days of the

Turn Out or else you will be charged applicable Turn Out Fees & Fines as per the CCA Rulebook.

NOTE: ALL TURN OUTS COME WITH APPLICABLE FEES AND/OR FINES, INCLUDING MEDICAL & VET RELEASES. If you Turn Out you are responsible to contact the CCA office to pay any outstanding fees or fines as a result. Please refer to the CCA Rulebook for all Turn Out rules

Notice to all Contestants: Starting July 1, 2011 an existing entry policy

will be enforced with respect to the second preference when entering a rodeo. A valid second preference will be one that is different from the first preference given. If a contestant does not give a different second preference, the entry will not be taken. No exceptions will be made to this policy after July 1, 2011. To help enforce this policy, the executive has approved adding the “draw out” option to the range of valid options for entry.

In the event that a contestant can only make one performance at a rodeo, they will be allowed to draw out of that rodeo starting July 1, 2011. If a contestant enters a rodeo with the second option as “out” there will be no second chance if they are drawn out by the entry system. As an example, if a contestant enters a rodeo as “Slack or out” they are stating that if they don’t get slack at that rodeo, they will not enter that rodeo at all. If a contestant enters using the “draw out” option this way, they will not be given any special preference in the system and may not get entered at that rodeo. The cost of using this draw out option will be a $25.00 admin fee payable prior to your next entry. For further information, please contact the CCA office.

Direct Deposit Information: The CCA Office has switched to Direct

Deposit rather than cheques for the Rodeo Payout. We need to collect banking information from all of our members. We will require all competing members to send us a VOID Cheque. They can do this 2 ways….by mail or by giving a VOID cheque to the Rodeo Secretary at a Rodeo when they pay their entry fees. The secretaries will have a spreadsheet that they will fill out once the member gives the secretary the VOID cheque to hand in to the Office. The Office will keep this VOID cheque on file and directly deposit winnings from every rodeo.

Conduct on the phone A reminder that rude behavior, harassment,

or foul language towards CCA staff will be documented, and result in a $100 fine. This fine will be levied by the CCA office, and the member will have 30 days to pay the fine before they become ineligible to enter as per the CCA Rulebook Section XIII A. 14

Page 8: CCA Rodeo News September

The Sask Bucking Group started as practice sessions for up and coming rough stock riders. Cody Bennett and Blade Young along with stock contractors Carl Barrett (Prairie Rodeo Company), Boyd Jacobson, Shawn Francis (Francis Rodeo) and Jim Lawrence (Prime Time Rodeo) brainstormed the idea. Monthly sessions have been held Sunday afternoons at Clearview Arena in Fort Qu’Appelle, and Sandilands Arena in Esterhazy since the winter of 2012/2013.

Stock has been supplied by Prairie Rodeo, Prime Time Rodeo, Boyd Jacobson (CCA Champion Bull Rider), Kelly

Oremba, Donnie Helmetzi and Chuck Yarshenko. Future rodeo stars pay $40 per day to climb aboard as many head of stock their body can handle. CCA Saddle Bronc Qualifier, Kirk Thompson drives all the way from Beausejour, MB, through stormy winter weather to climb on three or four horses. There is nothing else to do on a cold Sunday afternoon.

Pick-up men are Kevin Smith, Slim Brown and Blade Young (Canadian Finals Rodeo bull riding qualifier). These three are excellent horsemen and do a great job of picking up cowboys, catching flanks and dodging instructors in the arena.

Many champions have come out to lend a helping hand and offer sage advice. Saddle bronc riders receive encouragement from Francis Bourque the 1967 and 1968 Canadian Novice Saddle Bronc Champion; Tom Bingham won the award in 1996 and qualified for the Indian National Finals Rodeo, CCA, FCA and Chinook Finals; Walt Lockie was the 1999 CCA Saddle Bronc Champion and Larry

Stover a CCA Cowboy of the Year recipient. Bareback riders Clayton Strut, a CCA Finals bareback qualifier and Jonathan Kmita, the 2007/08 CCA Bareback Champion, help the young bareback riders.

World Champion tie-down roper, Roy Cooper says “Practise makes perfect.” What started as practise has been perfected, with the inaugural Sask Bucking Group Tour. The tour was envisioned to be a way to boost entries in the CCA and MRCA Novice events, as well as the horse riding events at KCRA rodeos. The Tour gives a financial incentive for young contestants to enter events. Participating CCA rodeos, to this point, include Kindersley, Kelliher, Weyburn and Herbert. MRCA rodeos consist of Gilbert Plains and Grunthal and the KCRA rodeos as made up of Porcupine Plain and Fort Qu’ Appelle.

Rodeo committees donate $150 per event, for the novice saddle bronc and novice bareback. The total payout is awarded to the winner of the

Sask Bucking Group Tour event winners at the finals, to be held during the Bowsman Lions Roughstock in Bowsman, MB.

Riders earn 25 points for having the nerve to nod their heads at a Sask Bucking Group Tour rodeo. The 25 points are then added to their score, allowing the top 3 contestants, in each event at the end of the season, a chance to compete in Bowsman.

Current standings, up to and including Herbert: Bareback Riding: Mason Helmetczi 449 pts, Pat Gravelle 278 pts and Bailey Plaiser 206 pts. Saddle Bronc Riding: Chase Bourque 300 pts, Jace Donez 254 pts and Cody Resch 185 pts.

For more information on the Sask Bucking Group practise sessions for 2014/2015 or the Sask Bucking Group Tour, contact Cody Bennett at (780) 237-0095 or [email protected]

Scott Sigfusson

As we spend another whole weekend I notice that there is a stretch of North America that not only puts on rodeos but they present a whole show. This area stretches from North Eastern sask, thru most of Manitoba, the mid eastern states thru northern Florida and into Tennessee, Mississippi. These communities that put on shows not only present a rodeo but most have horse shows, cattle shows and a fair. It seems as tho the communities want a show for everyone to enjoy. And when we look at the crowds at these shows, the stands are packed! It seems

that even people who don't know much about rodeo come to the performance because it's apart of the day of events and the cheer for everyone! They don't really care if we make a great ride or not! They are generally there to cheer for everyone!

So as we out west look at our shows, and ask; why are they failing? We only present one type of show and only attract the attention of someone to come watch a Rodeo, not someone who comes to look at a trade show and possibly some community based exhibits, as well as a horse show and usually some type of entertainment via concert or midway! Then they usually stick around to watch the rodeo, which sets the scene for usually a great Cabaret! Also if we ask any committee where their money is made they will probably tell you that it is the dance, so if we are looking for a way to improve our attendance at our rodeos let's look at broadening our attraction

base by offering more than just a rodeo! And contestants none of us like a long drawn out affair and neither does the audience, so let's be ready when out critter is loaded in the chute and be prepared to go! We know when we are up and who we follow so don't wait for your name to be announced! Be prepared and help our committees run a quick show, we all have places to be!

Well another couple weeks have gone by and they have been good weekends for myself, I have placed in at least one event in every rodeo since Radville!

As I was flipping thru the Rodeo news, I saw some opinions voiced where they think we need more rodeos such as Mankota and Beechy, in the modern day of rodeo we are in ask yourselves how much money is actually spent in towns we visit???

Food? How many of us actually eat in the towns and how many of

us pack food from home and have meal plans to try keep "healthy" food in our systems? I truly feel that the only real money spent in those towns is the money spent in the dance and beer tents! Many of us rodeo to hit many towns and make as many runs as we can, there are other associations where if you want "family" time, and visiting time away from home that is what those associations offer, weekends spent in the same town, decent prize money for not having to travel thousands of miles and two individual rodeos to compete in. We are an association who prides it's self in it's size, number of rodeos, and large membership.

So when we are asking our committees to put up more money and spend more time preparing for events, ask ourselves as contestants what are we giving back?

Jody Weinrauch

Jody is our new Office Manager / Rodeo Administrator and has been in our office since the beginning of August. She was born and raised on a farm half an hour south of Spiritwood, Saskatchewan. She has many memories of attending rodeos with her family and is very eager and enthusiastic to learn the planning side of a rodeo. Jody has 4 teenage children; three boys: 17, 13, 12 and a 16 year old daughter who keep her on her toes. In her spare time (what spare time??) she enjoys golfing, camping, riding her bike, and hanging out with family and friends. Jody is excited to attend our rodeos and is looking forward to meeting a lot of you. Jody brings plenty of energy and excitement to the work place; her attitude is a welcome addition to the CCA office.

Debbie Grant

Deb (or Debbie) is our new Assistant Rodeo Administrator and has been with our office since the middle of July. Deb comes to us from the provincial government where she worked for the past 35 yrs…we are hoping to get at least that from her here. Haha. Deb lives in White City with her husband Ken, they have been married for 34 years and have 2 grown sons. She is actively involved in her community and volunteers much of her spare time to a number of charities. She also loves to travel; a few of her favorite destinations include Alaska, the Carribeann, and Las Vegas. Deb is a get in there and get it done kinda gal. She is super friendly and an absolute joy to work with. We love her!!!

Myrna Hunter

Myrna is our part-time Administrative Assistant; she retired from Sask Wheat Pool with 32 years experience in 2006. Myrna came to us at the beginning of 2013 looking to expand her horizons and experience something new. Myrna was born and raised on a farm near Pangman, Saskatchewan and moved to Regina after high school. She has one daughter, Stephanie and two grand-daughters, Abbi and Cora who are the love of her life. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading a good book, cooking for her kids, and is excited to attend one of our rodeos. Myrna is looking forward to seeing a lot of you at this year’s finals. Myrna is our office go-to girl, she is very knowledgeable and is always willing to help. She comes to work with a smile on her face and is a pleasure to be around. The CCA wouldn’t be the same without her!

Canadian Cowboys Association prudently manages and allocates all funds collected from Members and Sponsors towards the Championship Finals.

The Canadian Cowboys Association was founded in 1963 with 60 members. Today, over 900 members from across Canada belong to the Association, which includes a full range of contestants and ages. The future is to ensure this legacy, with continued growth and development of the sport of rodeo through new rodeos, youth, rodeo schools, contestant development, an injury fund, sports medicine, etc. Contributions are needed to help fund the junior and novice development.

CCA 2014 Rodeo Scholarship Recipients

My name is Carlie Bowditch and I love Rodeo. I have been involved in rodeo for five years. I began barrel racing at my hometown CCA and bought a membership shortly after. The next year I joined the SHSRA.

My main event is barrel racing. I also compete in Break Away Roping, Pole Bending and Goat Tying. In 2012 I qualified for CCA Finals and Manitoba Finals Rodeo in the Jr Girls Barrel Racing. I also qualified for the Canadian and National High School Rodeo Finals. In 2013 I earned the SHSRA Barrel Racing Champion Saddle and qualified for National and Canadian Finals. My rodeo goals for this coming up rodeo season are to be running a consistent pattern on my new horse, qualify for Canadian and National Finals for High School Rodeo and be a tough Competitor in the open Ladies CCA barrel racing. My goal for next year is to start university, working on a four year degree in agribusiness while continuing to

compete and improve in rodeo. I plan to move south to get my university education and compete in College rodeo. This scholarship would assist me with the additional costs of rodeo such as, boarding, hauling, training and entry fees. It would also allow me to put more time into my rodeo horses this summer instead of working full time.

Rodeo is my hobby, my get away, my excitement and my passion. This sport is something I hope to continue throughout my whole life. Rodeo has taught me life lessons, has helped me develop life skills and has shaped me as a person. Rodeo means loving and caring for my amazing equine athletes, making memories that last a life time and being involved in one of the most genuine sports there is. The push to succeed, the encouragement to lend a hand and addictive adrenalin are all parts of this sport that have attached me to rodeo for life.

CCA Scholarship Female Recipient

Carlie Bowditch

Thank you for taking the time to read my short essay in consideration of scholarship opportunity. My name is George Marcenko and I live on a small ranch west of Rockglen with my parents; Curtis and Michelle as well as with my two younger siblings: Zane who is 16 and Jill who is 10. I have been fortunate to be born into a rodeo family. I competed at my very first rodeo when I was 4 years old. I started out my rodeo career by entering the barrel racing event for the first four years. I attended many Saskatchewan Barrel Racing Association jackpots with my mom as welt as all the Little Britches rodeos in Southern Saskatchewan. I started roping when I was 6 and I belonged to the Big Three Team Roping Association and the Saskatchewan Team Roping Association. I continued on as a member of these organizations until I was old enough to become a member of the Saskatchewan High School Rodeo Association. When I felt my skill level was good enough, I purchased my Canadian Cowboys Association membership at the age of 12.

Over the years, I have worked many events in rodeo. In addition to the previously mentioned barrel racing and team roping events, I also have participated in chute dogging, junior steer riding, breakaway roping, ribbon roping, goat tying, build a cowboy- saddle bronc, steer wrestling and tie down roping. From this extensive background of rodeo events I have developed a great passion for roping calves and team roping. My present goal inside the arena is to qualify for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Finals and compete in the Canadian Cowboys Association while I am attending university. Once I complete my post-secondary education, I plan to purchase my CPRA permit and once that is filled I will purchase a full membership and compete in the tie down and team roping events. My educational goals

include attending University of Great Falls, Great Falls, Montana to obtain a Bachelor of Education Degree - secondary education- physical education. This is a minimum 4 year degree.

I have been very fortunate while competing in the sport of rodeo. In addition to the achievements of qualifying for Junior Nationals, Nationals and Canadians each year since grade six as a member of the Saskatchewan High School Rodeo Association; I also have many other credentials. I was the Jr. High Rookie of the year in 2008. That year I was also the Ribbon Roping Champion. In 2009, I was the year end winner in the Boys Goat Tying, Boys Breakaway Roping, Ribbon Roping and Chute Dogging. In 2010, I was the Finals Boys Breakaway Champion, as well as the Chute Dogging and All Around Champion Cowboy. When I moved to the High School ranks in 2011, I was fortunate once again to win the Rookie Cowboy of the Year. I was also the season leader in the Tie Down Roping going into the Finals. In 2013, I was fortunate to regain this title once again. This past year in the Canadian Cowboys Association I finished the season one spot out of qualifying for the finals in the tie down roping.

As you can see, rodeo has defined who I am presently and it will always be a main focus in my life. It is my intent to continue chasing my dreams and goals as far they will take me. The ultimate goal would be to one day compete at the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton. My goal is to complete my 4 years of schooling with the least amount of debt possible. This scholarship that the Canadian Cowboys Association awards each year would help me to achieve this goal.

Thank you in advance for considering my application.

EVENT(S) YOU COMPETE IN: Junior Steer Riding

WHEN DID YOU START? I started as a 5 year old in Mutton Bustin, then Wild Pony Race and I began Junior Steer Riding when I turned 12 years old. There are very few girls who compete in Junior Steer

Riding, but it has been great fun and every one has been supportive and trys to help me out.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY OR EXPERIENCE SO FAR Competing in the Calgary Stampede this year. The crowd, the TV, the incredible rought stock and the overall rodeo was awesome!!!!!!

WHO IS YOUR INSPIRATION, AND WHY? I love rodeo and the rough stock events. My inspiration is probably the bull riders who have helped me the most: Nathan Roy, Brett Thompson and Dale Claypool and the great bullfighter David Sandilands too !!!!

WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD? Everything from country like Miranda Lambert to pop like Katy Perry.

FAVORITE FOODS: Funny thing, my favorite meal after

rodeo is steak. No matter what happens in the Steer Riding, I enjoy a good steak and potatoes.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH CITY KIDS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN RODEO? ?: I moved to the City ( Regina) 4 years ago, and I found a way to compete in rodeo and stay a country girl.

WHERE CAN WE SEE YOU THIS SEASON? I am at Ashern this weekend, Beasjour the next, then Wapella and Yorkton in November.
