It may surprise you to learn that the coordinated delivery of professional services to people in the home was modernized in England during the 1960’s and came to the States in the 1970’s. You may ask: “Does every home care provider do all that?” Well, no. But there is a professional provider that does all that and even more. You have probably heard a lot lately about palliative care. Palliative care is defined by the World Health Organization as “the active total care of patients at a time when their disease is no longer responsive to curative treatment and when control of pain, of other symptoms…is paramount.” Summed up, it is the coordinated delivery of services to relieve an individual’s symptoms and bring them comfort.

Palliative care is often provided in a home setting. Since most Americans report that they want to be able to remain in the comfort and security of their own home as long as possible, it makes sense that there has been an increase in home care services and agencies. Additionally, frail individuals able to remain at home save the Medicare system millions of dollars each year, while still able to receive highly skilled and often technically complex services.

It may surprise you to learn that the coordinated delivery of professional services to people in the home was modernized in England during the

1960’s and came to the States in the 1970’s. Since then, services have grown to include nursing, home health aides, social work, spiritual care and even bereavement counseling for loved ones. You may ask: “Does every home care provider do all that?” Well, no.

But there is a professional provider that does all that and even more. Additional services include massage and music therapies that have been found to help reduce levels of anxiety and pain as well as relieve stress and aid relaxation; physicians, clinical pharmacists, homemakers, allied therapists (occupational, respiratory, and physical), nutrition consultants and medical equipment specialists help round out the team that provides individualized care to each patient based on what the patient’s needs are.

To many Americans, the ability to receive a variety of services in their own home can make all the difference in their quality of life and desire to live. More on that in a minute…

Have you guessed who provides such a variety of services with one

phone call? Hopefully, you’ve been held in suspense – but this is no thriller so don’t let the next word scare you: Hospice. Yes, hospice care has been around since 1974 in the States, but too many are afraid of it to make the choice to live a quality life while there is still life left. Dame Cecily Saunders started the modern hospice movement in the 1960’s by establishing St. Christopher’s Hospice near London. She said: “You matter because of who you are. You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die.” The majority of hospice patients are cared for at home with support from hospice professionals - pioneers in home-based care.

Covenant Nursery School has been in Covenat United Church of Christ for more than 35 years. Laura Sandolfi, Director, has worked with the Nursery School for 26 years and as the Director for the pat 13 years. Laura believes that the nursery school gives the child extra preparation for the demands ahead and feels it is “A Successful Start to Learn-ing”. Some areas covered are counting days of the week and months of the year (both in English and Spanish), shapes, colors, singing, calendar and alphabet recognition and sound. The program provides development of social skills and inter-generational experience by visiting the Gasport Seniors who meet at the church. Special events like the Teddy Bear Picnic and show-and-tell are favorites. Laura includes seasonal and holiday activities, field trips to a dairy farm and fire hall and guest speakers such as dental hygienists and pet owners. Covenant Nursery School ends the school year with a graduation ceremony and is the last standing nursery school in the area. Calsse are open to 3, 4 and 5 year olds and run concurrent with the Roaylton-Hartland School schedule. Hours are held from 9:00-11:30 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If there are enough children, an afternoon class can be offered. For information call: (716) 772-7802

Transportation with a Human Touch…by Kathy Reandeau

Recently, a new transportation service has come to Western New York, “Senior Transportation & Services (STS)”. The owner of the company Al Bucci, takes a more personal approach to transportation. What makes his service differ from the vast competition is the personal service and attention that is given to each customer. Where most companies merely drive you to and from a location. Al’s company takes the time to help you in/out of the vehicle and will assist you with any groceries, bags or other items to your door!

Transportation is NOT only for seniors but to anyone who needs their service. The van service is designed for patients and people able to transport out of a chair with minimal assistance. STS eliminates the worry and stress associated with getting to and from your destinations. Customers appreciate the extra care, assistance and personal touch they receive from the employees/drivers, which is often needed.

STS is recognized as one of the leading providers of non-emergency medical transportation in the Western New York area. STS

is dedicated to providing exceptional service for ALL customers. The STS staff can be counted on to return you home quickly and safely.

STS drivers are experts in gentle driving procedures, ensuring a safe, comfortable ride in their immaculate vans.

HOME-BASED CARE COnt. FROM PAGE 1

people with a terminal illness who choose hospice care live longer than those who do not? Does quality of life effect desire to live? You decide.

You may be surprised to learn that you may know someone who is hospice appropriate. Do you know someone who:

has unintentionally lost weight in the last six months?

is often short of breath?has fallen three or more times over the past six

months?needs help bathing, dressing, toileting, getting

out of bed or eating?has open wounds that won’t heal or a history of

infections?has started taking medications to lessen pain?has a caregiver in need of help?

If you can answer “Yes” to three or more of these questions, this person may benefit from the many services hospice care provides. Don’t be afraid to make that call. Anyone can call Hospice to make a referral or to simply get more information.

If you dissect the word, there really is HOPE in HOsPicE. Hope for comfort when a cure is no longer feasible; hope that a secure, familiar care setting can be enjoyed; hope for personal dignity and freedom from unwanted procedures.

Additionally, hospice gives hope that the family will be nurtured and supported, even after the death of their loved one.

Unfortunately, too many patients accept hospice only in their final days or even hours of life, leaving families wishing they had known about hospice care sooner. Many patients die without ever being offered the tangible end-of-life support that hospice provides. They may instead struggle with untreated pain and with the side-effects of by-now futile curative medical treatments. They suffer all this, in addition to watching their families struggle to cope with the escalating demands of care.

Good news: everyone can afford hospice care! Fortunately Medicare, Medicaid, the VA and most private insurers have a hospice benefit. As the only hospice provider in Niagara County, Niagara Hospice provides charity care for under and un-insured individuals. Most of us came into this world surrounded by comfort and care, shouldn’t it be the same when we leave? Niagara Hospice believes so…

If you or someone you love is struggling to cope with a terminal illness, call Niagara Hospice at 439-4417.

Since serving its first patient in 1988, Niagara Hospice has served over 16,000 individuals as well as their immediate and extended families.

Hospice is specialized care for the terminally ill that includes physical, emotional, spiritual and bereavement care for families. Niagara Hospice also provides outreach grief and loss services to the community. For more information, visit www.NiagaraHospice.org, call (716) 439-4417 or become a fan on Facebook.

Our volunteer organization provides free pregnancy tests, compassionate peer counseling, truthful resources, material support and educational classes for girls, women and men who find themselves in unplanned pregnancies. Young women today are looking for assistance not only for the circumstances that they find themselves in, but they are also seeking an avenue of compassionate communication with trained individuals who are non-judgmental and who are interested in their overall welfare as well as the welfare of the new life they are carrying. Our vision is to create a culture where lives are transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and every woman is afforded the opportunity to choose life for herself and her unborn child.

PRAY: CareNet firmly believes that prayer is the life-blood of our ministry. Please lift our work and the work of our local centers up in prayer.

DONATE: As a non-profit organization, CareNet relies on the generosity of individual supporters and private foundations to carry out our mission. Churches and organizations can also consider hosting baby showers for the Center.

VOLUNTEER: CareNet centers are reliant on volunteers to carry out their important work and provide needed services to their local communities. A 21-hour training course is required to work with clients and this will be offered in July. If anyone is interested they can call the office at 434-1771 For more details or find out more about the Center, please visit our website at www.lockportcarenet.com.
