LexileOverviewRead-aloudTextsandSmall-groupReadingTextsOurmaterialspreparestudentsforthecomplextextstheywillencounterindependentlyby

teachingallstudentstheskillsandstrategiestheyneedtobecomefluent,confidentreaders.Studentsexperiencetherichnessofgrade-leveltextsthroughread-aloudsandclosereadingsoftextofincreasingcomplexity.

ThetextsusedforSharedReadinginBeingaReaderwerechosenspecificallyfortheworkthatthestudentsdowiththem.Thetextsallowthestudentstopracticefoundationalskillsincludingconceptsofprint,phonemicawareness,high-frequencywordrecognition,andunderstandingofauthor'scraft.Therepetitiveandrhymingnatureofthetextsalsomakethemappropriateforechoandchoralreading,helpingthestudentswithfluency.Becauseofthenatureandpurposeofthetexts,LexilelevelsandtextcomplexitywerenotaconsiderationwhenchoosingthetextsforSharedReading.

Small-groupreadingtextsinBeingaReaderare carefullyconstructedtoalignwithinstruc-tioninearlyreadingskills(phonics,high-frequencywords,andtextfeatures),andarealignedwithLexilegrade-levelbands(whenappropriate).

ThetextsinMakingMeaningwerechosenforthepurposeofteachingaparticularcomprehensionstrategy,andarealignedwiththeappropriateLexilegrade-levelband.Studentsworkwithexcerptedtextfromtheread-aloudstodeepentheirunderstandingofthetextsandtopracticeusingthestrategiestaughtduringthewhole-classlessons.

ThetextsinBeingaWriterwerechosenforthepurposeofteachingaparticularelementofagenre,illustratinganexampleofwritingcraft,ortohighlighttheworkofaparticularauthor.Becausetheyareusedasmentortextsforwritinginstruction,welookedforthebestbookswecouldfindthatwerehighinterestandfittheinstructionalgoalsofthelessons.Ourselectionoftextswasbaseduponqualitativeanalysis.Quantitativemeasureswereoflesserimportanceduetothedemandstheinstructionplacesonthetexts.
