Introduction

• The main economic sectors of the country are tourism, tea export, apparel, textile, rice production and other agricultural products. In addition to these economic sectors, overseas employment contributes highly in foreign exchange, 90% of expatriate Sri Lankans reside in the Middle East

• The parties which ruled the country after 1948 did not implement any national plan or policy on the economy, veering between left and right wing economic practices.

• Almost five years after the end of the three-decade civil conflict, Sri Lanka i now need to focus on long-term strategic and structural development challenges as it strives to transition to an upper middle income country.

• Key challenges include ensuring that growth is inclusive, realigning public spending and policy with the needs of a middle income country, ensuring appropriate resource allocations for the various tiers of government, and enhancing the role of the private sector, including provision of appropriate incentives for increasing productivity and exports.

National Plan• Review would be undertaken of the existing

National development plans in the light of the recent changes

• Deploy Police and Armed forces to combat crimes including drug menace

• Promote Independent police commission• Create employment opportunities for poor

marginalized youth• Create increased employment opportunities

to disabled including disabled soldiers

• Renegotiate contracts entered with foreign and local contractors to obtain more favorable terms of the country

• Reinvigorate all plantation industries by eliminating all types of corruption

• Improve living conditions of the plantation workers

• Promote local and export agriculture

• Attract quality investments with opportunities for quality high paying jobs

• Reduce income inequality, reduce reliance on sending housemaids to foreign countries

• Promote concept of living and equitable wages

• Create equal opportunities based on merit and need

• Appoint quality academics for higher learning • Attracting foreign academics for short term

assignments• Equal opportunities in education for children• Part of the emoluments of all teachers to be

based on the academic performance of the students to prevent wasteful expenditure of time and money on tuition

Formulate

• Formulate concrete policy to tackle to challenges of global warning and pollution

• Preserve our forests, wet lands and bio diversity

• Improve public transportation as a cost effective alternative

Foreign relations• Maintain friendly relations with all the

countries as was the practice for many decades
