.Behold the humble press release. Even in the age of blogs and RSS feeds, the press release remains the simplest, yet most effective tool for generating publicity about your small business. Even better, the resulting coverage costs nothing compared to the costs of paid advertising.

While you don’t have to be a PR expert or writing whiz to create an effective release, a potentially newsworthy item may be overlooked if the release is poorly organized or doesn’t seem newsworthy. First, you need to have news that’s worth sharing. Things that may seem important to you may not be relevant to your intended audience. Imagine you’re a reader with little or no familiarity with your business, and think about what might appeal to you. Some things are easy, such as adding a new product or service, opening a new location, or reaching a mile-stone anniversary. Also consider offering readers helpful hints related to your product or service. If you’re an accountant, for example, a list of tips for getting organized at Income Tax time may be perfect for time-crunched taxpayers. Gift shop owners can prepare a list of innovative ideas for specific holidays, or acceptable items to send service personnel overseas. Aside from the news item itself, the most important parts of a press release are the headline and first paragraph. Because editors sift through dozens of press releases a day, they rarely read anything that doesn’t immediately grab their attention. Get to the point by organizing the first paragraph around what your news is, who it’s about, and why it’s important. Then, use brief supporting paragraphs to add detail. Remember that like a resume, a press release is de-signed to pique interest, not tell the entire story. As such, limit your release to no more than two double-spaced pages. Your company’s logo and contact information should

be at the top of your press release. It’s also helpful to include a name, address, and phone number or email in the text. Once your release is ready, contact the publications or media outlets to identify the right editor, and whether they prefer to receive releases by regular mail or electronically. Make sure you spell the edi-tor’s name and title correctly. Releases with errors or addressed to long-departed predecessors often go into the trash unread. You can get more help about generating publicity for your small business at SCORE “Counselors to Amer-ica's Small Business.” SCORE is a nonprofit organi-zation of more than 10,500 volunteer business coun-selors who provide free, confidential business coun-seling and training workshops to small business own-ers. Call 1-800/634-0245 for the SCORE chapter nearest you, or find a counselor online at www.score.org.

MEMBER OF THE MONTHMEMBER OF THE MONTHMEMBER OF THE MONTHMEMBER OF THE MONTH

I bought the shop in June of 2008. My background is actually in Social Work, but I'd burned out of my job and wasn't really sure what I was going to do after I

quit as a Children's Crisis Clinician. The opportunity came up for me to buy the store, and here I am! My passion is in Metal Clay, which is a revolutionary material that came onto the scene about 15 years ago. It is pure metal (fine silver, gold, copper and even alloys like bronze and steel) that is mixed with an organic binder. It can be worked like clay and when fired to the individual metal's sintering point, the binder burns out and the "clay" becomes pure metal! It's really an exciting and amazing product, and I've been teaching classes in metal clay since I purchased the store. I was recently given the op-portunity to travel to the Mid Cornwall School of Jewellery in England as an apprentice/assistant to another metal clay artist which was just incredible. I've also had my metal work ac-cepted into juried exhibits and published in a magazine. I will also have a piece in a 2011 calendar full of exemplary work in the field of metal clay.

I have tried to focus on teaching interesting classes at the store. In addition to the metal clay, I also teach basic silversmithing, wire working and basic stringing. I also love hosting "Ladies Nights", birthday parties, and events for school and scout troops. I also make memorial and commemorative jewelry. That has been like a meeting of my jewelry world and social work. I lost my dog in November of 2008, shortly after moving away from my home of 10 years, my boyfriend and my friends to buy the shop in June. My dog had been a real source of com-fort during the difficult transition and losing him was very difficult. I made a memorial locket to keep his spirit close, and I had such positive feedback from it, that I started creating them for others who had lost loved ones. www.dragonflybead.com and www.commemorativejewelry.com Erin Meharg
