A few housekeeping notes before worship begins:

Prepare with joy for the Paschal Feast! Please consider entering the sanctuary in silence, reverence, and in preparation for worship.

Please turn off your cellular telephones as you enjoy the prelude! Thank You.

ALL are invited to worship in this place, including young children and their occasional noise; however, IF you would prefer—Christ Church does offer childcare during worship. If you think your child might benefit from having a book available to them, they are located on the book rack in the Gathering Place (out the side door, to the right of the pulpit). If your child needs to stretch their legs, we have a long aisle and a few steps just for such things.

A wheelchair accessible restroom, and a changing table are located out the side door (to the right of the pulpit) and then to your left.

Gluten free hosts are available upon request.

Small amplification devices, with individual earphones, are available in the narthex (at the front doors).

Please consult an usher for answers to other questions you may have. Welcome home!

Readings for March 22, 2015: Jeremiah 31:31-34; Psalm 51:1-13; Hebrews 5:5-10; John 12:20-33 ADULT FORUM: At 9:00 a.m. TODAY Canon Pat will begin a series on being a Welcoming and Inviting Church. As usual, the Adult Forum will meet in the library. ALL ARE WELCOME! THE ANGEL FUND: On the first Sunday of each month, there will be a special opportunity to give toward the Angel Fund—otherwise known as the priest’s discretionary fund—which will assist those amongst us in need. Small blue envelopes are in your pews and in the narthex. Fill them, mark them, and place them in the regular offering plate. Thank you! MISSION FORMATION FUND: At their March meeting, the Vestry voted (with one obvious abstention) to establish a Mission Formation Fund. A similar fund, formerly in place at CCEN, was the Ministerial Fund; a source of help for those among us desiring to complete a theological course or attend some church related conference or seminar. Since the next phase of Don’s discernment will require additional theological studies, either at Yale Divinity School or through other theological institutions; and since some parishioners have graciously offered assistance, it was decided (in the interest of transparency) that this would be an appropriate means to facilitate any support which folks may wish to lend. This process also allows for any gifts to be reflected on annual stewardship statements. Regular support for Don’s formation does not/will not come from the CCEN General Fund (aside from that which is required by Diocesan Canon). In the future, the Mission Formation Fund would continue to aide others who may wish to explore theological education and formation. This is not at all intended to be a requirement or a request for/to help, rather it is offered as an explanation of the process for those who wish to do so. Questions or gifts may be directed to either Canon Pat, Danielle, or Don. EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN: All women of the Episcopal Church in Connecticut are invited to a gathering and open board meeting on March 21 at The Commons in Meriden. 9:30 a.m. thru 2:00 p.m. RSVP to Pat Chappell, 203.265.0313, by 3.14.15. SPRING TRAINING: You are invited to attend the Third Annual Spring Training & Gathering for God’s Mission in Meriden on March 21 at Lincoln Middle School, Meriden. You may register through the ECCT website, www.episcopalct.org. EASTER FLOWER MEMORIALS: The Altar Guild is now accepting memorial gifts for Easter Flowers which beautify the sanctuary. Please complete the form available in the Gathering Place and return it by March 29, for inclusion in the Easter worship booklet. Please print the exact words you would like used in the bulletin. If you have any questions, please call Sarah French at 203.820.5000, or email her at [email protected].

BOOK BUNCH: CCEN Book Bunch is reading Tinkers by Paul Harding. We will meet on Tuesday, March 17, for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration along with our book discussion. Please join us! Looking ahead: our April read will be The Poisonwood Diary by Barbara Kingsolver.

HUNGRY SOUL BREAKFAST: In addition, as part of our Lenten Journey, we will gather food for, prepare, and serve a Hungry Soul Breakfast according to the following schedule: Hungry Soul In-Gathering of Food and Meal Supplies: Sunday, March 22, during worship Hungry Soul Cooking: Saturday, March 28, 9:00 a.m. — 11:00 a.m. @ Christ Church Hungry Soul Breakfast: Sunday, March 29, 6:00 a.m. @ The Open Door Shelter All are welcome to participate at whatever level they feel called. Contact Don Burr for details. HOSPITALITY: Coffee Hour hosts are needed for April. 7 inch dessert plates, too! ~ BZ

The Lessons

The people sit.

A Reading from the Book of Numbers 21:4-9 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. The people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.” Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.” So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22 1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, * and his mercy endures for ever. 2 Let all those whom the Lord has redeemed proclaim * that he redeemed them from the hand of the foe. 3 He gathered them out of the lands; * from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. 17 Some were fools and took to rebellious ways; * they were afflicted because of their sins. 18 They abhorred all manner of food * and drew near to death’s door. 19 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, * and he delivered them from their distress. 20 He sent forth his word and healed them * and saved them from the grave. 21 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his mercy * and the wonders he does for his children. 22 Let them offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving * and tell of his acts with shouts of joy.

A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians 2:1-10 You were dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ–by grace you have been saved–and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God–not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life..

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People: Thanks be to God. Silence may follow. All stand if able.

Then, all standing if able, the Deacon or a Priest reads the Gospel, first saying

The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John 3:14-21

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said, “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.” After the Gospel, the Reader says

The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The people sit.

The Sermon Canon Pat Then, all standing if able, the Presider continues with

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Silence may follow. All kneel if able.

Intercessor and People

God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. The Presider concludes with an absolution or a suitable Collect.

Eucharistic Prayer 3 Enriching Our Worship, Page 62

The people remain standing if able. The Celebrant, whether bishop or priest, faces them and sings or says Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People Our hearts are with the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

Presider

All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst out from the womb; You brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey; And so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout with joy:

Presider and People

The Sanctus S114 Healey Willan

The Presider continues

Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never been silent; you called a people to yourself, as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us.

We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: “Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: “Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ’s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ: Presider and People Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory! The Presider continues Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ.

Grant that we, burning with your Spirit’s power, may be a people of hope, justice and love. Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with all your people into the joy of our true eternal home. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. Presider and People Blessed are you now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, People and Celebrant BCP, Page 364 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread EOW, Page 69
