WelcomeAs a safety professional, I know that working safely doesn’t just happen. It is a developed state of mind backed up by experience, training and actions on the part of each individual. It is a decision to do it right, to do the right thing and to make a difference.

Someone once said, “The only thing harder than planning to work safely is explaining why you didn’t.” While I don’t recall who said it, this statement has kept me focused throughout my career and continues to drive each safety message I present.

Corporate and Community Learning works diligently with many individuals and corporations to drive this point home in each of its courses and programs. We have many corporate partners that share our philosophy, concerns and willingness to go the extra mile to ensure that their employees are not only meeting the basic work safety standards, but exceeding them on a daily basis. One such corporate partner is Phillips 66 Wood River Refinery.

Lewis and Clark Community College and the team at Phillips 66 have enjoyed a working partnership for many years. We currently assist them with Contractor Safety Orientation training as well as Industrial Fire Crew courses taught by Lewis and Clark adjunct fire instructors throughout the year. It is truly a pleasure to be able to recognize Rick Haase, Emergency Response/Security Team Leader and Fire Chief for the Phillips 66 Wood River Refinery in Roxana, as our customer spotlight for this catalog (see back cover).

With the help and direction of Chief Haase, Lewis and Clark and Phillips 66 Wood River Refinery have become one of the premier training partnerships in this area, resulting in some of the most innovative educational opportunities for everyone involved.
