Why has CCNA been renamed to CCNA Routing and Switching? Does it affect the exam syllabus?

As the industry has evolved, the job roles of the CCNA certified professionals have changed significantly. It now has more practical applications related to Routing and Switching. This is the reason, in the present redesign more weight has been given to routing and switching, and the name of the certification has been suffixed with the same.

Cisco CCNA program redesign

In the month of March - exactly on 26th March, 2013, Cisco made the official announcement of a redesign in its CCNA program. This redesign has brought about a few significant changes in the exam and syllabus for CCNA.It has now been renamed to CCNA Routing and Switching Certification. The most significant highlight of the update is that this certification has now been made even more targeted for industry jobs of present and future. This is also important to note the exams scheduled in September 2013, will be the old exam and course pattern which however will be the last of its pattern. We have compiled a section on the frequently asked questions for this program redesign. Read them in the next slides…

What is CCNA Routing and Switching and how is it different from CCNA?

CCNA Routing and Switching and CCNA are the same. There’s only thing that the curriculum of CCNA exams have now been redesigned to align with changing job roles and technology advancements in routing and switching.




I am currently a valid CCNA professional. How can I achieve CCNA Routing and Switching?

If you are already a CCNA, you do not need to do anything. The Cisco database will automatically update your certification to routing and switching. Though, you will get the new certificate only upon recertification. If your certification is due for renewal within the next 6 months, you are recommended to take the old ICND2 (640-816) or CCNA (640-802) exam before 30th September 2013.

There are alternatives for you to achieve this: if you pass the current CCDA DESGN exam, or if you pass any current CCNA Concentration exam (wireless, or security,

or voice, or SP Ops), or if you pass any current 642-XXX Professional level exam, or if you pass any current Cisco Specialist exam (excluding Sales Specialist

exams or Meeting Place Specialist exams, Implementing Cisco TelePresence Installations (ITI) exams, Cisco Leading Virtual Classroom Instruction exams, or any 650 online exams), or

if you pass any current CCIE Written Exam, or if you pass the current CCDE Written Exam or current CCDE Practical

Is there any change in the CCNA Routing and Switching exams?

Yes. There are changes in the exams. The current pattern exams will end forever on 30th September 201.

It is important to note that there is no change in the price of the exams. It all remains the same.

The following replacements have occurred in the exams: 640-822 ICND1 is replaced to 100-101 ICND1 640-816 ICND2 is replaced to 200-101 ICND2. 640-802 CCNA is replaced to 200-120 CCNA.




Is 100-101 ICND1 exam is a recommendation for me?

If you have yet started with the old pattern, our recommendation is that you must take this new exam. It will be keep you up to date with the latest curriculum. You will be updated for present day routing and switching technology. However, if you are mid way or have already done a greater part of the preparation already, take the old exam to utilize your preparation. The next time you will recertify yourself, you will take the exam for new CCNA.




What is the best way to achieve the CCENT certification for me now?

It’s the same as the previous question, If your preparation is done even when you have not appeared for the exam, you should stick with the old one and should take the old 640-822 exam. However, If you are about to start your preparation and study, you must prepare for the new ICND1 course and take the relevant 100-101 ICND1 certification exam.




I am new to it. Which exams should I take?

Needless to say, new exam is more viable and compatible. It is designed according to the present day jobs. You must go for the new exam pattern if you are new and want to acquire CCNA for the first time.




What are the recertification requirements in the changed exam pattern?

It remains the same, no change in it. As before, the certification will be valid for 3 years. On its completion, you will be required to recertify yourself.




What are the main differences between old and the new exams for CCNA?

There have been changes in the course structure. Some of the old topic have been removed from the ICND2, while some of the them have now been moved to the ICND1.




If pass the new ICND1 and ICND2, will it recertify for any other certifications?

Of course yes. If you pass ICND1, it will recertify your CCENT. If you pass ICND2, it will recertify your CCDA, CCNA Data Center, CCNA Routing and Switching, CCNA Security, CCNA SP, CCNA SP Ops, CCNA Video, CCNA Voice and CCNA Wireless.
