On February 19th, we hosted our second annual Musical Theatre competition at Northeastern Illinois University. One hundred and twenty-seven students enrolled, a 40% increase over last year. We look forward to growing this event even more in future years and will continue to offer educational opportunities in the areas of musical theatre repertoire and pedagogy. The 2011 MT competition winners are listed on page two of the newsletter. On February 4th, CCNATS members gathered at my house in Evanston for our first Song Salon, to sing for each other, socialize, and of course eat and drink. The March Song Salon will again be in Evanston, with the theme of 17th-18th C. Italian art song. In April, we will meet in Sarah McIntyre's studio in Chicago's Fine Arts Building to sing selections from the 20th C. American Song Book. And in May, we hope to gather in the western suburbs. More details can be found in this month's newsletter. CCNATS and The Chicago Singing Teachers Guild have co- sponsored two events this year. February and March have been very busy months for CCNATS. On February 19th, we hosted our second annual Musical Theatre competition at Northeastern Illinois University. One hundred and twenty-seven students enrolled, a 40% increase over last year. On February 4th, CCNATS members gathered at my house in Evanston for our first Song Salon, to sing for each other, socialize, and of course eat and drink.  The March Song Salon will again be in Evanston, with the theme of 17th-18th C. Italian art song.  In April, we will meet in Sarah McIntyre's studio in Chicago's Fine Arts Building to sing selections from the 20th C. American Song Book.  And in May, we hope to gather in the western suburbs. More details can be found in this month's newsletter. 

CCNATS and The Chicago Singing Teachers Guild have co-sponsored two events this year. On February 26th, seven CCNATS members performed French mélodies in a masterclass with French Canadian baritone Bruno Laplante.  Monsieur Laplante was a delight to work with and thoroughly engaged our audience.  On March 12th, Notre Dame musicologist Susan Youens presented a fabulous lecture on Schubert's "Auf dem Wasser zu singen".

2011 Chicago NATS Student Competitions Update

About 120 singers participated in our second annual Musical Theatre Competition on February 19th at Northeastern Illinois University. Congratulations to all of the teachers who sent students and to all the students who sang. Winners were announced in Recital Hall followed by a concert by all first place winners. A very special thanks to Northeastern Illinois University for generously donating their space to CCNATS. Thanks to Mark Crayton, Tracey Ford, Bob Heisinger, Victoria Holland, Sarah McIntyre, and the whole board for making this happen. Videos of the singers in concert can be seen onYoutube. What are CCNATS members doing?

Randy Buescher will have his fourth article published in the NAT JOS in the upcoming September/October edition.   It is original research on the female pharyngeal voice.  It is titled The Female Pharyngeal Voice and Theories of low Vocal Fold Dampning.  He is also starting a studio/program consulting/mentoring program for teachers and programs interested in the YTV approach towards building the modern commercial/musical theater voice.   Please contact him at [email protected].

Sarah McIntyre will appear with Verismo Opera Club as “Pamina” in an English adaption of The Magic Flute. Performances take place at the Arts Center of Oak Park on Friday, March 25th at 7pm and on Sunday March 27th at 3pm. Tickets are $15 - $32 and can be purchased online at www.verismooperaclub.org or in person at the Oak Park Visitors Center at 1010 Lake Street.

NATS newcomer, tenor Roy Cornelius Smith, recently stepped in for Marcello Giordani in the Lyric Opera of Chicago's production of "The Girl of the Golden West" opposite Deborah Voigt with great success.  He has already been heard on some of the world's great operatic stages including the Metropolitan Opera, Salzburger Festspiele, Volksoper Wien, Deutsche Opera Berlin New York City Opera and the New Israeli Opera. He has also appeared with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice, Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal and with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. Last season he performed with the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Calaf in Turandot opposite Maria Guleghina, a role which he also sang in Vienna, Birmingham, Charlotte, Memphis and in Jacksonville. It is also the role which will take him to the stage of La Scala next month and a return engagement in Berlin and Vienna. He maintains a private voice studio in Chicago and continues to work with young singers all over the world in master classes and private lessons.

Patricia Toledo has just joined the Community Music Center at Harper College in Palatine as vocal instructor in January. She has also been accepted into the highly competitive National Association of Teachers of Singing's Intern Program, which will be held this summer from June 7-17.  The NATS Intern Program only accepts twelve interns a year. The program pairs young teachers with national recognized master teachers in both the classical and contemporary art of singing. This year's program will be hosted at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She will receive free room, board and tuition. This year's master teachers include: Claudia Catania, Metropolitan Opera and Broadway; David Small, University of Texas at Austin; Christopher Arneson, Westminster Choir College; and Marietta Simpson, Indiana University.

Welcome new members!

CCNATS is growing! On Sunday, March 6th, Victoria Holland hosted a gathering for new members. We welcome our new members and introduce them below!

Gretchen Albrecht Canfield, received her Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance from the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music where she was the student of Lucille Evans. After moving to New York City to pursue a career in musical theatre and operetta, she continued her vocal studies with Joan Caplan. In New York City Gretchen premiered the title role in Lola, with the York Theater Company, was featured in film director Joshua Logan’s autobiographical show, I Remember It Well, and appeared as Mabel in a National Broadway tour of The Pirates of Penzance. A native of Dayton, Ohio, Gretchen danced with the Dayton Ballet Company in her early years and later appeared as soprano soloist with the Dayton Philharmonic orchestra under the baton of Charles Wendelken-Wilson. In Chicago she has appeared at the Goodman Theatre, Forum Theater, Chicago Gilbert and Sullivan Society, and currently as soloist and choir director for the Naperville Congregational Church.

Peg Cleveland is on Voice Faculty and Musical Theatre Faculty at the Music Insitute of Chicago Community School. She holds a MM, BM, BA, University of Washington and Kent State University, Professional Studies Diploma, Opera Performance, Cleveland Institute of Music. Master classes and vocal studies with Warren Jones, Elly Ameling, Beverley Rinaldi, Augusto Paglialunga, James Mismas, Mary Curtis Verna, Sherry Overholt, Neal Goren and Valery Ryvkin.

Jessica Coe has been teaching for more than ten years, and while she has worked extensively with children, she is comfortable teaching students of all ages. Her teaching background includes experience in providing private voice and piano instruction, teaching general K-8 music at a local school, conducting children's choruses and musical directing musical theater performances. As a pianist she has been accompanying herself, choruses, and other vocalists for more than 15 years. With a passion for vocal music, she can still be found accompanying a variety of vocalists and ensembles, most recently contracted with the Lyric Opera of Chicago toaccompany its Opera Kids program. As a vocalist, she began her performing with a children's chorus years ago and has since continued to sing as a soloist and professional chorister in a number of ensembles throughout the area. Trained in classical voice, she holds a BM in Vocal Performance from DePaul University and is working toward a Masters program in Vocal Performance through Roosevelt University where she currently studies with Mark Crayton.

Tamaron Conseur is a native of San Diego and received a Master of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from Northwestern University where he studied voice with Bruce Hall. He portrayed John Sorel in NU Opera Theater's new production of The Consul and worked as a

Section Leader and Assistant Conductor at Alice Millar Chapel. Mr. Conseur currently sings in the choruses of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and last season performed with Chicago Opera Theater as an ensemble member. He is a soloist and section leader at the Kenilworth Union Church in Kenilworth, Illinois. Mr. Conseur has performed as a soloist with the Green Lake Festival of Music, the Peninsula Music Festival, the Glenview Concert Band, the Harper Festival Chorus and the Dunbar Early Music Festival. He is a past finalist and prize winner in the Bel Canto Foundation Competition and the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition. Mr. Conseur is a member of the American Guild of Musical Artists(AGMA), and of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity.

Margaret Harden is a working singer and experienced voice teacher. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Voice Performance from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and has had a wide variety of performing experiences over the years. Highlights include the a capella group, Voices of Liberty, at EPCOT Center, Orlando Opera Company, Florida Symphony, Chicago a capella , Madison Theatre Guild, and Six Flags Great America. Additionally, Margaret has been a soloist for many oratorios, such as Handel Messiah, Mozart Requiem, Faure’ Requiem, Haydn Lord Nelson Mass, Vivaldi Gloria, and Rutter Gloria. Many of the leading choral music publishers employ Margaret in the recording studio to sing on demo recordings of new choral works that are being published and marketed. Locally, Margaret sings with the Chicago

Symphony Chorus and the Grant Park Symphony Chorus. She lives in Geneva, IL, and maintains a private voice studio at her home along with teaching voice at St Charles North High School, St Charles East High School, and Batavia High School.

Jean Hersey is a National Board Certified teacher at Deer Path Middle School in Lake Forest, IL. She holds a B. M. Voice Performance from the University of Illinois B. S. M. E., University of Illinois as well as M. M. in Voice Performance from Northwestern Illinois University. She has served as a Musical Director for Northbrook children's theater as well as Musical Director for College of Lake County. She was a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Competition and has performed in opera and musical theater. Ms. Hersey is a Professional Member of the Chicago Symphony Chorus.

Denise Knowlton recently received a D.M.A. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She is a former young artist with Glimmerglass Opera and the Lyric Opera Cleveland. Her regional credits include performances with the Cleveland Orchestra, Wichita Grand Opera, Kansas City Civic Opera and NYC’s Chelsea Opera. Her credits include: “Katisha” in The Mikado and “Ulrica” in Un Ballo in Maschera, as well as “Mama Lucia.” This past summer sang the role of Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance, which she quickly reprised at the Muddy River Opera in Quincy early this year. Her focus on young singers has grown in the last 5 years, during which time she began singing as a teaching artist for the Lyric Opera of Kansas City’s education and

outreach department, bringing children’s opera to elementary schools. She became the Education Associate at KC Lyric in 2009, which provided her an opportunity to work with teen girls in an all-girl opera about bullying: One False Move. Denise was the voice teacher for at-risk youth in Kansas City for 2 years through Musical Bridges and worked with children aged 8-11 in a class she created for young singers with the University of Missouri’s Community Music and Dance Academy. She is currently a Program Assistant with the Chicago Children’s Choir, the choir director for children and teens at Old St. Patrick’s Church and teaching privately at Jones Preparatory College. She will join Grant Park Festival Chorus for the 2011 season, and play the Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors with Park Ridge’s Petite Opera Productions in the Fall.

Carolyn Neihoff is an adjunct member of the applied voice faculty at Harper College. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Florida State University and a Master of Music degree from Ohio State University. She is active professionally as a teacher and singer in the Chicago area. She has performed leading roles with the Chicago Opera Theatre Outreach Program and Bowen Park Opera and traveled to Germany to sing with the Chicago Symphony Chorus. Her extensive teaching experience includes several summers on the faculty at Belvoir Terrace in Lenox, Massachusetts where she had the opportunity to teach voice lessons and basic music theory to high-functioning mentally disabled students at a special camp for children and adults with Williams Syndrome. In addition to her work at Harper, Mrs. Niehoff serves as a cantor at the Church of the Holy Ghost in Wood Dale.

Antonio Quaranta received his bachelors in music from Northern Illinois University.  There he studied voice with baritone Robert Sims and soprano Nancy Henninger.  While at NIU he performed such roles as St. Lawrence in

Thompson’s Four Saints in Three Acts, Jupiter in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, and Papageno in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. Antonio received his masters in music from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University where he studied with baritone David Holloway and soprano Judith Haddon.  He also had the opportunity of singing Stravinsky’s Pulcinella with the CCPA Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Rossen Milanov. Professional credits include Giuseppe in Verdi's La Traviata with Intimate Opera Chicago.  Antonio has also sung Handel’s Messiah with the Dekalb Chamber Orchestra, Hayden’s Lord Nelson Mass and Handel’s Dixit Dominus both with the Metropolis Chamber Orchestra.  Antonio is also a member of the St. Charles Singers, a

professional chamber choir which performs regularly with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra.  With the choir, Antonio has toured in France performing at various cathedrals in the Loire Valley.  Apart from performing, Antonio runs a private voice studio, teaching voice to high school aged students.

Paul W. Thompson, a contributor to BroadwayWorld.com since 2007, is a Chicago-based writer, singer, actor and composer by nights and weekends, and a non-profit executive by day. He holds two degrees in musical theater (a B.F.A. with Honors from Baylor University and an M.M. from the University of Miami, Florida), plus an M.B.A. with Distinction from DePaul University. He has been a member of the Chicago Symphony Chorus since 1995, and can be found singing at many area churches and synagogues, including St. James Cathedral (Episcopal), where he is also Cathedral Carillonneur. He has performed in theatrical and concert venues in 30 states and in Europe, and has appeared on Chicago stages in a variety of musicals, operettas, operas and concert works, including “Forever Plaid” at the Royal George Theater and in thirteen consecutive mainstage productions in the early 1990s at Light Opera Works, where he served on the Board of Directors from 2006-2009. He is a composer in various musical genres, and worked as a musical director in theaters before moving to Chicago. Paul can be found on Monday nights watching showtune videos at Sidetrack in Lakeview, the inspiration for his weekly column, “The Showtune Mosh Pit.” His proudest achievement is that he has seen in New York the original Broadway production of every Tony Award-winning Best Musical since “Cats.”

Miriam van Mersbergen, soprano, performs around the Midwest in choirs and small ensembles. She most recently has sung with Exultate, Vocal Essence, and the Milwaukee Choral Artists. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Calvin College and a master’s degree in speech language pathology and vocology from The University of Iowa and a doctorate in psychology and speech-language-hearing sciences from the University of Minnesota. She is a practicing speech-language pathologist and a professor of speech-language pathology at Northern Illinois University. Her main academic interests include the interaction of voice and emotion.

A.J. Wester is an active performer, teacher and stage director. Ms. Wester is currently on the faculty of the new Chicago High School of the Arts (ChiArts High School) where she teaches both group voice for the vocal and music

theater programs as well as private lessons.  Ms. Wester was the Stage Director/Vocal Coach for Chicago Opera Theater’s ‘ Chicago Opera Theater for Teens', and completed four seasons as the Director of the Summer Musical Theater Workshop with Light Opera Works. She has served on the faculty of Roosevelt University and is currently on the faculty of DePaul University's Community Music Program. Starting this Spring Ms. Wester will also be the acting and movement teacher as well as the stage director for the new collaboration with Merit Music and Lyric Opera Chicago new Opera/ Musical Theater program  for Teens. As a stage director, Ms. Wester has collaborated with St. Petersburg Opera, Opera Company Brooklyn, Chicago Opera Theater, Utah Opera, Indianapolis Opera and San Diego Opera. As a classical singer, Ms. Wester was a Studio

Artist with Utah Opera. Highlights include: “Dabeeb” in the North American Premiere of Marriages between Zones 3, 4 and 5 by Phillip Glass as well as productions with Chicago Opera Theater, Court Theater, Porchlight Theater, DePaul Opera Theater, Intermezzo Opera in Hartford, CT, American Opera Group, Elgin Opera and multiple productions with Light Opera Works in Evanston, IL. In addition, she has sung with the Chicago Symphony Chorus and the Grant Park Chorus. Ms. Wester holds a B.Mus. from Roosevelt University and an M.Mus from DePaul University.

Chicago NATS Song Salon

Designed as an opportunity for NATS members to sing for one another in an informal and congenial setting, members are

Upcoming Recitals and Workshops

March 19, 9:00 - 4:00 pm- A Day at the Opera ‘Immersion Experience’ presented by the Norris Center featuring Kathleen and Peter Van de Graff. A day-long immersion program covering the whole history of opera, "A Day at the Opera" is a multi-facet extravaganza with video, audio and other presentation media, PLUS live performances of two complete one-act operas: a comic chamber opera from the early 18th century called "The Gambling Husband" by Orlandini (a wonderful piece and the most performed opera of the entire 18th century!) and Menotti's "The Telephone." March 26-30, NATS Spring Workshop in collaboration with MTNA, at the Hilton Hotel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Let's Make Music Together: The Art of Collaboration. Collaborative pianist Warren Jones and acclaimed mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves will headline the is the theme of the workshop that also will include master classes and presentations by collaborative pianist J.J. Penna, mezzo soprano Karen Brunssen, artist agent Robert Mirshak, and composer and singer David Sisco, winner of the 2010 NATS Art Song Composition Award.  Sisco and Tom Gualtieri will also present an evening cabaret performance. Some of the topics covered include: "The Working Artist: Collaboration Across Multiple Disciplines", "Reading Into Things: Singers, Pianists, Poems and Stories"and "Changing Times: Arts Organizations, Singers, and Managers."  In addition, sessions on voice related topics from MTNA presenters will be included.  Attendees will also benefit from the extensive exhibit hall, networking opportunities, and many other sessions at the MTNA conference. Northwest Chapter of Lyric Opera presents Patricia Toledo on April 13, 2011 at 2pm at the Moorings of Arlington Heights in "From the Opera House to Broadway: The Birth of American Musical Theatre." Ms. Toledo will lecture on the change in America's taste from the grand opera house to light operetta and variety shows and how the American musical was born while performing examples of music from both operettas and musical theatre spanning from 1879 to 1990. The recital is free but donations to the Northwest Chapter of Lyric are appreciated.

Vocal Arts Academy for High School Students which will be held at Lake Forest College this summer.  It is a fabulous opportunity to help your students become better performers. It will be held June 26-July 1, 2011. Students will work on polishing their art by performing in master classes and recitals and working hands-on with experienced teachers and performers. Teachers include: Patrice Michaels and Kathleen and Peter Van De Graaff all of whom have international performing and teaching experience. Classes include: 

• Building a solid foundation of vocal technique Successful auditioning tools

• How to communicate with the audience • Sight reading for singers • Movement classes • Music theory • Diction classes• Voice lessons and coachings

Students will also have the opportunity to record some of their repertoire for an audition CD. Matthew Chellis is starting a new summer program-Up North Vocal Institute (UNVI)-A summer vocal training institute in northern Michigan. It is a unique four week program designed to integrate the singers voice, mind and body with private lessons and

coaching, fitness and nutrition, and mental health for the singer.  Several local Chicago teachers and coaches are participating including Dr. Dana Brown, MaryJean Allen, Julia Faulkner, and Matthew Ellenwood, to name a few.  UNVI is on Yaptracker and Classical Singer websites, and interested students and teachers
