Let’s Help Keep Everyone Warm this Winter!

As a school, we are always trying to find ways to help people in our community. During the month of December, we will be collecting warm clothes such as toques, mittens, and scarves to help those who are in need during the cold winter months. Our

goal is to help raise awareness with all of our students at Bellevue that giving is just as, if not more, important than receiving during the holiday season. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has agreed to pick up our collection and distribute these items to those in need. Thank you for helping our students develop into compassionate citizens by sending in a warm piece of clothing

to school by Tuesday, December 15th. Items can be brought to the box by the snowman in the foyer.

Arrival at School, Recesses and Inclement Weather Students should not arrive at school before 8:25 a.m. When the weather is inclement, students are allowed into

the school. Students in grade 1 through 5 are expected to line up outside their boot room entrance every day. Please do not encourage or allow your child to take a short cut through the school.

At Bellevue, we value the importance of movement breaks and exercise for students and staff. Research has

long supported the connection between regular movement breaks/ recesses and enhanced learning. As a result, we offer students 3 daily recesses and daily Physical Education classes.

On days with inclement weather, school administration assesses the weather conditions. If conditions are not safe based on Environment Canada guidelines or deemed detrimental to student and staff wellbeing, recess would be indoors.

Inclement Weather and Black Gold Contracted Buses Radio Stations and TV stations in Edmonton will announce whether or not buses are running or if schools are closed. Only in exceptional circumstances are schools closed. The Black Gold Regional School website also has up to date information at www.blackgold.ca or you can call the transportation after hours line for a recorded message at 780-955-6025. A voice mail and text message will be sent out prior to 7:00 a.m. to BGRS bus students if there is a change to busing.

    Merci Beaucoup! Heartfelt Thanks!

Special thanks to the Leduc Legion Colour Party, special guests and to our students for making our Remembrance Day Ceremony so special!

To the volunteers, the donors and the Halloween dance committee who helped contribute to a successful book sale and a fantastic first schoolwide dance which raised around $1600.00. The money raised from this event will be used towards our school council wish list, which includes items such as musical instruments, equipment and other items not considered mandatory. These items help enhance the children’s education and school experience.

Our numerous volunteers who give so generously of their time

We thank Aroma Indian Bistro (6002-29 Avenue, Beaumont) for helping make the grade 3 India celebration extra special. The tasty samosas were a hit with the students.

  • Counsellor’s Corner

For children, the excitement of the holiday season can be very difficult. The Sandbox

learning website offers some tips and strategies to make the holiday season merry and

bright for all. Have a look at the strategies they suggest to deal with some of the

challenging holiday situations including giving and receiving gifts, managing the

excitement and coping with changing schedules.

    1. Gift Giving and Receiving – The excitement of getting gifts can be overwhelming for

children. Help them understand polite giving and receiving of gifts with these strategies.

Involve Children in Giving – Let children help pick out and wrap gifts. By

participating in the gift giving process, children become interested in seeing other

people’s reaction to the gift. Even young children can choose between two gifts, put a

bow or tape on the wrapping paper, and decide where the gift should go under the

    tree.

Practice Receiving – Role play receiving a gift and thanking someone for it.

Make writing thank you cards part of your family routine so children understand how to

    thank people politely for presents.

    2. Holiday Energy – Holiday events often mean sweet foods and late bedtimes. Use the

strategies below to manage energy levels and make bedtime successful.

Keep Children Active – Sledding, walking, and playing games outside during the

day can help children use their energy in a healthy and positive way. Keep children

active during the day so they will be tired at night making bedtime easier.

Limit Sweets – Candy, cookies, and soda are prevalent during the holidays. These

foods are high in sugar and caffeine. They cause children to be overly active and make

falling asleep difficult. Set rules about how much and when these foods can be

    consumed and provide healthy alternatives.

Stay on a Sleep Schedule – Even when children are not in school, a consistent

sleep schedule is important. Have children wake up and go to bed at a regular time.

Plan morning events such as holiday shopping to motivate children to wake up and get

    ready for the day.

    3. Holiday Schedule Changes – Many children benefit from consistent routines and have

difficulty with change. Make holiday schedule changes less stressful with these simple

    tips.

Use Visuals – Have a holiday calendar that lists events in writing, drawing, or

picture format depending on the child’s level. Refer to the calendar to prepare children

for the day’s events and help them understand what is going on and when.

Involve Children – Let children add new events to the calendar. If there are

important events the family must attend, explain why attending is important. If there are

events that are debatable, include children’s input in decisions about attending the

    event.

Wishing you a wonderful month of December! Karen Gifford – School Guidance Counsellor

  • Gymnasium News

November was once again a busy time in the gymnasium as we worked on volleyball skills like serves, bumps, jump, volleys, and modified games. We also had the big parachute out for fun collaborative games. We are presently teaching safety rules for sledding. As we head into December, we will be learning dances to help keep us fit and to help our bodies to learn to keep time to music, develop sequences, and repeat patterns. We will also have a mini unit on golf – inside! In December, we will also take advantage of the great outdoors to do some 'Alternate Environments'. On occasion, when weather permitting, we will go sledding. We would like to thank all the students that are participating in many intra-murals at EBS. For the grade 3-4, we have Pinball and we would like to thank Mrs. McLeod for organizing it. In grade 5 and 6, we have Volleyball under the direction of Mrs. Duke, Mrs. Osness, and Mme McCallion.

    Lunch Hour Skating

Lunch hour skating will begin soon on Mondays from 12:05-12:30 pm and Fridays from 12:30-12:57pm. The students will be supervised by staff. If there is sufficient interest, a portion of the ice will be designated for students with face masks to play a game of “shinny” hockey/ringette using plastics sticks and a soft foam puck. Students are not permitted to bring their own hockey or ringette sticks. A portion of the ice will always be designated for skating. Parent volunteers are welcome to help tie skates and supervise. If students wish to participate, they must have skates, gloves, and a CSA approved skating helmet. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to e-mail me [email protected] or call me at the school at 780-929-8663.

Music Notes With the arrival of the winter weather, we start to think about our Christmas concerts and songs of the seasons! Many classes have begun learning the words to the songs that they will be singing at our concerts. It is definitely a musical time of the year. We continue to learn the music fundamentals through song and play. Many parents inform us that their children are often singing songs at home that they have learned at school. This is music to MY ears! In January, all grade 4 and 5 students will need a recorder to stay at the school for music classes. This is just a friendly reminder if you haven’t already purchased one that they will need one. Quality, brand name Yamaha recorders can be ordered on Powerschool from December 4

    th to December 10

th for $6.00. They will be delivered right to the school. Many

students have indicated that they would like to have a recorder at home to help them learn. I really encourage you purchase an extra recorder to help them out! They will be very proud to share what they can do! Thank you for your support. As always, feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
