We know—you like to plan. So to help you plan a committee of ad-ministrators, staff and faculty was formed to plan and develop our first annual district calendar. In this calendar you will find as many dates the group could think of to help you plan the school year. You will find board meeting dates, concert dates, school closings and so much more. Since this is our first attempt we know something was overlooked and we apologize. However with your help we can tweak the format and add the information you need. Please feel free to contact the school with ideas for the calendar so we can make it better for you. Please note that schedules for sports do not appear on the calendar because the schedules are so fluid and change so often. Please check HighSchoolSports.net for up to date information about your favorite Bulldog Teams. It is our hope that the use of the district calendar will help save money as we work to reduce the amount of paper we use for the monthly newsletter. The cost for printing and mailing the newsletter can be a burden for the district. This calendar is the first of many changes we are planning on making. Did you know that every newsletter, along with many forms, calen-dars and notes home are also available for download on the school website? You can view them there rather than print them out and save ink and paper. If you would like additional dates printed here or have ideas for this calendar please contact the school. As always, stay up to date with everything that happens by checking in daily with www.chateaugay.org.

Message from the Superintendent As I write this message, we are rapidly heading toward the end of the summer and the start of the 2011-2012 school year. While a lot of important work goes on here during the summer, it is always exciting to see the first day of school approaching so that the hallways and classrooms here at CCS will once again be filled with our students and staff. It's not a school without the kids! Speaking of important summer work, there are a few things that we have been working on during these warm months that I would like to share with you. First and foremost is this calendar. At the end of the 10-11 school year, a group of staff members got together as a calendar committee in order to start the process of creating this calendar. The following folks need to be thanked for their participation: Donna André, Jane Beach, Carrie Blair-Wilcox, Helen Boyea, Loretta Fowler, Vicki Gardiner, Bruce Gugliotta, Michelle Reynolds, Kate Sheldon, and Jocelyn Trombley. I would also like to specifically thank Mr. Art Trombley for not only serving on the calendar committee, but for also doing the actual layout and production of the calendar over the summer. As the message to the left states, this calendar is a new concept for CCS, but it is something that we feel will be very helpful for all of our district's families and a product that we see improving and evolving into the future. Of particular note, I would like to point out that the calendar not only lists important dates but also has a wealth of information on the pages above each month. Please take a moment to look through all of this information as it is not only very informative, but it also includes many mandatory notifications such as FERPA Rights and Asbestos, Special Education, and Title I notifications. Another important project of note has included working to transition our dis-trict's cafeteria program from a district operated service to a contract service. We are very pleased to be working with Advanced Meal, a company out of Syracuse, NY in this endeavor. Advanced Meal has successfully operated in the Northeastern Clinton Central School District for several years now and has hired all local people to work in our cafeteria. This is an exciting opportunity to not only save money for CCS, but to also think of new ways to expand our meal offerings to the students and staff. I hope that this calendar finds you and your family well, and I hope that you are enjoying the last few weeks of this wonderful summer. I am looking for-ward to another successful school year here ad CCS, and I am looking forward to seeing many of you at upcoming school events.

NEW - IMPORTANT Mrs. Reynolds has checked in to say that the ViewMySports site we used to use to follow the teams will no longer be used. In-stead the area schools have moved to HighSchoolSports.Net. She said that once you sign up you can get email and text alerts from the site with schedules, changes, cancellations and more. Please make every effort to check this site before calling the school.

How to find the link? Looking for information about the Sports Program? Go to the school website www.chateaugay.org and look for the Sports link. Once you are on the Sports Page you can click on the link for HighSchoolSports.net. Once you are on that site you can access up to the minute schedules and sign up for email and test alerts.

*The fitness room is closed when school is not in session, when school closes early for weather related reason or other instances when the access must be limited for building related purposes.

NEA Celebrates the 90th American Education Week: November 13–19, 2011

NYS SRP Recognition Day November 15, 2011

Each year during this time Chateaugay Central School rec-ognizes the efforts and contribution of all the support staff for their hard work and dedication. This includes all the bus drivers, custodial staff, secretarial staff, teacher’s aides and cafeteria employees. We cannot thank these people enough for their hard work all year long on behalf of our students.

Administrative Professionals (Secretary's) Day April 25, 2012

National Professional Secretaries Week and National Secretary's Day was cre-ated in 1952 through the work of Harry F. Klemfuss of Young and Rubicam. Klemfuss recognized the importance and value of the position to a company or business. His goal was to encourage more women to become secretaries. Using his skill and experience in public relations, Klemfuss, promoted the values and impor-tance of the job of secretaries. In doing so, he also created the holiday in recogni-tion of the importance of secretaries. Today, the title is changing and evolving. But, the recognition is equally important. There are two new terms in use today. They are "Administrative Professionals" and "Executive Admins". The two names sometimes mean different roles and re-sponsibilities to different companies. Both are broader terms, that encompass more positions than the original "Secretary" role. The name change recognizes and acknowledges that the role has changed signifi-cantly since 1952, and for the better at that. And in Harry Klemfuss' day, these po-sitions were the realm of women. Today, you find some males in these positions.

Since 1984, National PTA has designated the first full week in May as PTA Teacher Appreciation Week, a special time to honor the men and women who lend their passion and skills to educating our children. PTA events at the na-tional, state, and local levels celebrate the outstanding contributions teachers make.

Teacher Appreciation Week 2012 is May 7-11.

Want to visit us? Once school begins all doors are locked. To visit the school please report to the visitor’s entrance or the elementary entrance and press the button located near the door. Once you are buzzed into the build-ing you should immediately report to the elementary office or the high school office for a special visitor’s badge. You should have this with you at all times and you should return the badge when you leave the building. Thank you for your help keeping the building safe dur-ing normal business hours.

From the Nurses Mrs. Lorraine Kourofsky Mrs. Mary Rounds If you would like the school to administer medication for your stu-dent please see the Nurse Page on the school website for a special form you can access giving the school permission. Please also check out the Nurses’ Page on the school website for important announce-ments all year long.

Students who drive to school

As a general rule, driving cars to school by students is discouraged. We find student use of vehicles during school very difficult to supervise and "guidelines for use" are often ignored by students. This not only jeopardizes the student, but also the parent, the school, and other stu-dents who may be unauthorized passengers. We ask that you discuss this at home with your child and be fully aware of the responsibilities and hazards involved in bringing a car to school. If it is necessary to drive, and the student wishes to park his car on school grounds, an application must be completed by the parent and student. This application is to be submitted to Mrs. Andre, High School Principal, for approval and issuance of a Parking Permit. A "Student Parking Permit Application" may be picked up in the Main Office at any time.

CCS Ski Club News

It's that time of year again. Snow will be falling in the near future, So it is time to clean off the cobwebs from your skis and snowboards, get them tuned up and ready for some winter fun. Getting skis tuned is a great way to ensure safe equipment on the slopes. If you plan to rent equipment from a ski shop, now is the time. Membership in the Chateaugay Central School Ski Club is open to all students in grades 6-12. To join the ski club, all students must have a permission slip signed by their parent or guardian. All students must sign and follow the school's code of conduct. These forms will be available at the informational meeting to be held in mid-November. Students are not required to make every trip to be a member. New members are required to take lessons until they have demonstrated the ability to ski or snow-board with ease and control. Dependent on the weather, we try to have eight Thursday night trips to Titus Mountain. The bus leaves CCS at 4:30 pm and returns to school about 10:00 pm. Students may only be picked up at Titus Mountain by a parent who signs them out with an advisor. Carpooling is not allowed. Students can bring their dinner or eat in the cafeteria at the lodge for around $6.00.

Wanted—Bell Ringers Salvation Army Kettle Drive

Each year the Chateaugay Central School Student Council sponsors the Salvation Army Holiday Kettle Drive to benefit the students and families of our school district. We need your help to "man" the kettles during the holiday season. If you can volunteer your time, your family's time or your organization's time to help others, please call Jo Ann Stumpf at 497-6611, to select a time slot.

Academic Policy Research has shown that academic achievement usually increases when a student is involved in an extra- curricular activity. Academic success is a priority for all stu-dents at Chateaugay Central School. All Student Athletes Grades 7-12 If a student is failing one subject in any five week marking period, the student may continue to participate but will be required to make a plan with the teacher, coach, parent/guardian and principal to bring the grade up to passing. Students will be al-lowed to participate with one failing grade, but must show a faithful effort to bring the grade up to passing. Mandatory study halls/remediation periods may also be as-signed. If, in the opinion of the teacher, in consultation with the principal, the student is not making a valid effort to correct his/her deficiencies, the principal may exclude the student from participation for a specific period of time within the five week mark-ing period. If a student is failing two subjects in any five week marking period, the student will have two weeks to bring at least one of the subjects up to a passing grade. During this time, the student may continue to participate. The student will be required to make a plan with the teacher, coach, parent/guardian and principal to bring his/her grades up to passing. Mandatory study halls/remediation periods win also be assigned. If, after two weeks, the student is still failing two subjects, he/she will be suspended from the activity until the next five or ten week marking period, whichever comes first. At that point, the ineligibility continues until at least one grade is brought up to passing. Whenever a student is participating with one failing grade, the conditions set forth in item one above will be in effect. If a student is failing in excess of two subjects, the student will be declared ineligible to participate in any activity until the next five or ten week marking period, which-ever comes first. At that point, the ineligibility continues until the student is passing all subjects (except that he/she may participate with one failing subject under the con-ditions set forth in item one above). Communication of Eligibility Status When a student is placed on the academic ineligible list by not meeting the require-ments as outlined above, the principal is responsible for contacting the parent/guardian in addition to contacting the athletic director/advisor(s)/coach to communi-cate the student's academic status. We understand that each student learns differently, and that each case is different With the presentation of quality effort in all classes, a student-athlete will be able to play.

ASSERTIVE DISCIPLINE Once again this year CCS teachers will be using classroom rules devel-oped under the "Assertive Discipline" system. Assertive discipline is a normalization of some good common sense; students need to know what is expected of them and what consequences will be if they choose to misbehave. Rules cover routine classroom situations. Extreme acts of misbehavior are to be reported to the principal for appropriate action. Your child will be told what is expected of him/her by each teacher. If you don't get a copy of the rules and would like them, please call school. This information also appears in the handbook your student received at the beginning of school. USE OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS To comply with Federal and State laws to fulfill our educational obliga-tions, Chateaugay Central School has adopted a total ban on the use of tobacco products anywhere on school grounds at any time. AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM September of 2011 will mark the 17th year of our After-School Latch-key program. The program is designed for students in grades K-6. The hours of operation are 2:00 PM until 5:30 PM daily, following the school calendar. The charge is $4.00 per child per day. If more than two children in one family participate, the charge is $10.00 per day. If you are interested in participating in this program, please contact the ele-mentary office and an application will be sent to you. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school at 497-6290.

Mission Statement Mission Statement - The mission of Chateaugay Central School, in partnership with the community, is to provide a safe environment in which each student, including those with disabilities, succeeds in reaching his/her potential. We envision a community of learners who achieve state benchmarks at all levels and have a mastery of the essen-tial knowledge, skills, dispositions outlined in the New York State Learning Standards. We believe all students at C.C.S. have the ability to learn. We, the faculty, staff and administration, have the responsibil-ity to develop each student's potential to learn.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION AT CHATEAUGAY CENTRAL SCHOOL

Kindergarten registration will be held at Chateaugay Central School in April (specific dates will be announced). Registration will be held in The Elementary Office (parents only, please). There will not be early dismissal for Kindergarten classes on this day. Students will remain in school all day. To be eligible to enter Kindergarten at Chateaugay Central School, a child must be five years of age on or before December 1, 2012 and a resident of the Chateaugay Central School District. Parents must provide proof of age (birth certificate or baptismal record) and completed physical address and mailing address (if different) as well as emergency contact names and numbers, at the time of registration. Parents are reminded to bring their child's immunization record with them to registration. Save your Box Tops for Student Council’s Annual Contest.

Every year Student Council raises money for scholarships and community based projects by taking advantage of the Box Tops for Education program. Special contests are held during the school year and those dates will be announced. To help the school raise money we invite you to collect box tops all year long. Some years the school has earned well over $1,000 thanks to this effort. Every year more and more products have box tops attached. Here are a few new ones to look out for: Avery® Sticky Notes Boise ® X-9 ® Hi-Brite Multipurpose Paper Boise® FIREWORX®* Colored Paper Boise® HD P™ Premier Print Ink Jet/Laser Printer Pa-

Chateaugay Central School Attendance Policy

Philosophy

Good attendance is an integral part of every student's education. Chateaugay Central School is committed to promoting a sound attendance policy that will lead to the develop-ment of skills, understanding, and knowledge that will enhance student performance. Although the District will strive to encourage all students to attend school daily and keep parents informed of excessive absences, it should be understood that it is ultimately the responsibility of the student to attend and the parents to ensure attendance at school on a regular basis. Strategies to Meet Philosophy 1. The attendance policy will be included in student handbooks and will be reviewed with the students at the start of the school year. 2. Parents will receive a copy of this policy at the start of the school year. Parents will be asked to review this policy and to sign and return a statement indicating that they have

read and understand the policy. 3. The attendance policy will be reviewed with parents at all of the school orientation meetings held in September. 4. School newsletters will include a summary of the policy and periodic reminders of the components included in this policy. 5. The District will provide a copy of the attendance policy to all staff members. 6. Copies of this policy will also be made available to any community member upon request.

Excused vs. Unexcused vs. Exempted Absences PK-12

A. Excused absences, tardiness, and early departures from school or class are defined as those due to personal illness, illness or death in the family, impassable roads or unsafe weather conditions, religious observances, quarantine, required court appearances, attendance at health clinics/doctor's office, approved college visits, approved coopera-tive work programs, military obligations, and such other reasons as may be approved by the building principals. Chateaugay Central School reserves the right to request written confirmation from physicians and/or other caregivers to verify student absences, tardies, or early dismissals. Excused absences are counted along with unexcused absences in determining course credit and retention. B. Exempted absences are school-related absences that are not counted for this policy. They include music lessons, field trips, sports trips, guidance appointments, health office appointments, senior trip, ISS, state testing, and such other reasons as may be approved by the building principals. C. All other absences, tardiness and early departures are considered Unexcused. Some examples of unexcused absences, tardiness, and early departures include but are not limited to "woke up late,""needed at home," "picking up early," "family vacation," and "personal reasons." Recording and Reporting Attendance

PK-6 Classroom teachers will take morning attendance and send absentee names to the elementary secretary [office/designee. The elementary secretary/designee may contact parents/guardians to ascertain the reason for the student's absence. If a student returns to school from an absence, tardy, or early dismissal without a written excuse, the classroom teacher will note the number of days missed on a school excuse form and will send it to the elementary secretary/designee. The elementary secretary/designee will mail the school excuse form home to the student's parents requesting an excuse for the absence(s). If no excuse is received within five (5) schooldays of the date on the school form, the absence(s) will be coded as unexcused.

7-12 First period teachers will take morning attendance and report absentees to the school nurse/designee on student attendance cards. Parents/Guardians may be contacted regarding a student being absent and the reason for the absence. Attendance will be taken during each class period in grades 7-12 and reported to the high school office. If a stu-dent returns to school from an absence, tardy, or early dismissal without a written excuse, the nurse /designee will note the number of days missed on a school excuse form. The school nurse/designee will mail the school excuse form home to the student's parent requesting an excuse for the absence(s). If no excuse is received within five (5) school days of the date on the school form, the absence(s) will be coded as unexcused.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students over 18 years of age ("eligible students") certain rights with respect to the student's education records. These rights are: (1)The right to inspect and review the student's education records within 45 days of the day the School receives a request for access. Parents or eligible students should submit to the School Records Management Official, Jackie Cowan, a written request that identifies the record(s) they wish to inspect. She will make arrangements for access and notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. (2) The right to request the amendment of the student's education records that the par-ent or eligible student believes are inaccurate. Parents or eligible students may ask the School to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate. They should write the School principal, clearly identify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate. If the School decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the School will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or eligible student when notified of the right to a hearing. (3) The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student's education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception, which permits disclosure without consent, is disclosure to school offi-cials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the School as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the School Board; a person or company with whom the School has contracted to perform a special task (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility. Upon request, we will disclose education records without consent to officials of another school district in which a stu-dent seeks or intends to enroll. (4)The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by Chateaugay Central School to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the Office that administers FERPA are:

Family Policy Compliance Office U.S. Department of Education 400 Maryland Avenue, SW Washington, DC 20202-4605

The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) also requires that, with certain excep-tions, we obtain your written consent prior to the disclosure of personally identifiable informa-tion from your child's education records. However, Chateaugay Central School may disclose appropriately designated "directory information" without written consent, unless you have ad-vised the district to the contrary in accordance with District procedures. The primary purpose of directory information is to allow the Chateaugay Central School District to include this type of

information from your child's education records in certain school publications. Examples in-clude: A playbill, showing your student's role in a drama production; School web page; The annual yearbook; Honor roll or other recognition lists; Graduation programs; and Sports activity sheets, such as for basketball. Directory information, which is information that is generally not considered harmful or an inva-sion of privacy if released, can also be disclosed to outside organizations without a parent's prior written consent. Outside organizations include, but are not limited to, companies that manufac-ture class rings or publish yearbooks. In addition, two federal laws require local educational agencies (LEAs) receiving assistance under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) to provide military recruiters, upon request, with three directory information cate-gories -names, addresses and telephone listings -unless parents have advised the LEA that they do not want their student's information disclosed without their prior written consent. If you do not want Chateaugay Central School to disclose directory information from your child's education records without your prior written consent, you must notify the District in writ-ing by 12/01/11. Chateaugay Central School has designated the following information as direc-tory information: -Student's name -Participation in officially recognized activities and sports -Address -Weight and height of members of athletic teams -Telephone listing -The most recent education agency or institution attended -Photograph -Degrees, honors, and awards received -Date and place of birth -Major field of study -Dates of attendance -Grade level

Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment

The Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA), 20 U.S.C. § 123h, requires Chateaugay Central School to notify you and obtain consent or allow you to opt your child out of participat-ing in certain school activities. These activities include a student survey, analysis, or evaluation that concerns one or more of the following eight areas ("protected information surveys"): 1. Political affiliations or beliefs of the student or student's parent; 2. Mental or psychological problems of the student or student's family 3. Sex behavior or attitudes; 4. Illegal, anti-social, self-incriminating, or demeaning behavior; 5. Critical appraisals of others with whom respondents have close family relationships; 6. Legally recognized privileged relationships, such as with lawyers, doctors, or ministers; 7. Religious practices, affiliations, or beliefs of the student or parents; or 8. Income, other than as required by law to determine program eligibility. This requirement also applies to the collection, disclosure or use of student information for mar-keting purposes ("marketing surveys"), and certain physical exams and screenings.

Memorial DayNo School

Page 20: CCS District Calendar

CCS is excited to provide parents with a convenient, easy and secure online prepayment service to deposit money into your child’s school meal account at any time. This service also provides parents the ability to view your child’s account balance or even get a low balance alert by email through a web site called MyNutrikids.com. By having money in each child’s account prior to entering the cafeteria, we find the lunch lines move along much faster so your child has more time to eat and be with friends. Also, parents will have the ability to print out a copy of their child’s eating history report. This history report will show you all dates and times that your child has purchased a breakfast, lunch, or other items within the past thirty days. It is important to note that you can create an account and view your child’s eating history whether or not you choose to use the online pre-payment system. These new services are now available. To access these services: Simply go to the CCS web site at www.chateaugay.org Click on the Cafeteria link. Click on the MyNutrikids.com link. From this site you will create your account and add

money to your child’s school meal account. All you need is your child’s name, student ID number and school’s ZIP code. (To find your child’s student ID, look at a recent report card, or call the elementary or HS office. You must use all nine digits, even if they are ze-ros.)

Things to know: If you have more than one child in the District, you can handle all online prepayments from the same online account. Payments may be made with a major credit or debit card or through an existing PayPal ac-count. Even if you do not have a debit or credit card, you can use PayPal’s E-check service, which electronically transfers funds from your checking account. In order to use the online prepayment service, a small convenience fee for each transaction will be assessed to cover the bank fees. The convenience fee is $1.75 per deposit transaction. Parents placing money into multiple meal accounts will only be assessed the $1.75 fee once per deposit transaction. CCS will not profit from the use of this site.

Asbestos

In accordance with EPA regulations regarding asbestos, the school buildings have been inspected for the presence of asbestos and a management plan has been prepared. The results of these inspections and the management plans are available for review in the office of the Superintendent of Schools.
