After a lifetime of doing this and that, going here and there and just plain burning the candle at both ends, I feel like sitting down for a while. But I’m not at all disappointed as

my status in life has been raised to the next level. I have recently been promoted to the position of “Chief Assistant Gardener” with an internship under the authority of “The Armchair Gardener”, who also happens to be my wife of 44 years. And I think we make a pretty good team. She has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of trees and shrubs, and especially flowers, while I’m real good at digging a hole. At least I thought I was until I was told there are different kinds of holes for different plants. (Sorry, I thought a hole was just that – a hole in the ground.) Anyway, my new position is not so much a pas-

sion for gardening as it is learning how to take time to enjoy simple things. A plant will not be rushed, so I’m having to learn patience. And along with patience has come a new contentment which is somewhat foreign to me.

Most of my life has been an exercise in “Chasing the Wind”, going from one “adventure” to another, doing it as hard as I could. I raced sports cars for ten years and rode motorcycles, on and off, for over 50. I’ve captained a sailing vessel in the ocean as well as competing in sailboat races in large lakes. And I have enjoyed a lot of (too many, in fact) interesting automobiles and have restored a few classics. And with all that I had a family and was trying to build a business. You can understand why I want to sit down for a while.

These things, however, (my family notwithstanding) have been “empty pursuits”. I’m feeling a little older now and without the inexhaustible energy I once had, and much of my disposable income has been “disposed of”. So I’m now just beginning to learn how to be content where I am and with what I have. Gardening is inexpensive, allows me fresh airand exercise, teaches me patience and certainly makes my yard look better. And it’s a hobby which the Armchair Gardener and I can enjoy together, perhaps for the first time in 44 years.

There is nothing wrong with wanting more than we have – going to the next level, financially or intel-lectually, or pursuing our dreams and goals. But, perhaps contentment is being happy where we are until we get to where we want to be. In Philippians, Paul says, “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and all circumstances, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” And he goes on to say, “I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.” Perhaps Paul was a gardener.

JoePost Script: I certainly can’t call myself a gardener. I’m still just a weed puller and hole digger. But I was so proud of “my” first bloom last week, I took a picture of it. I’m also learning by experience. When I accidentally pull a plant apart thinking it’s a weed, I pull up the whole plant and throw it away, thereby destroying all evidence of the mistake! That’s cause I’m a smart gardener.

Checking brake � uid is another one of those car owner tasks that is pre� y simple. All you need to do is verify that there is enough brake � uid in the reservoir and, if not, take your car to your mechanic for � xing.

All road vehicles have had hydraulic brake systems for decades. � at entails a reservoir, a system that generates extremely high pres-sure when you step on the brake pedal, a power assist system and an actuation system at each wheel. In the past few years power brakes have become standard. In recent years such things as Antilock Braking Sys-tems (ABS) have also become standard, � rst on two wheels and now on all four.

Anyway, all hydraulic brake systems need a su� cient amount of special brake � uid in order to do their critical job of stopping the car when you need it to stop and within the calculated stopping distance which is based on your speed. � ere are many fac-tors which e� ect stopping distance, such as the tire contact patch, the compounds used for the braking material on your brake pads or brake shoes, the condition and amount of material le� on those pads or shoes, the con-dition of the metal parts of the braking sys-tem such as drums and rotors, and even the tires themselves. All braking systems work by converting mechanical, rotational motion to heat, so there are many variables involved in keeping your braking system up to accept-able standards. It is not a system you want to mess around with. Remember our discus-sions about expected performance, respon-sibility, and 4000 pound weapons on wheels. Stopping is more important than going fast. � ink about that!

Checking your brake � uid level is rela-tively simple. Pull out that Owner’s Manual again to help locate where the brake � uid reservoir is and what it looks like. It will probably be an opaque plastic reservoir with a bright yellow cap a� ached to the � rewall

in the engine compartment just forward of the brake pedals. It usually is also a� ached to a large black metal container that is the vacuum booster for the power steering sys-tem. Because the cap is vented, very o� en a small amount of � uid will leak out and that the white opaque plastic and the bright yel-low cap may be coated with sticky dirt, dust, and grime. Clean it o� with that essential rag and then keep it clean. It will probably have min and max level indicators molded into the side so you can see at a glance whether you are OK or not.

� ere are a whole slew of di� erent kinds of brake � uids with di� erent performance char-acteristics and price ranges. Some will eat paint like it was acid. Others will tingle your � ngers. You NEVER want to use anything but what the car manufacturer speci� es and NEVER mix types. To change from DOT 3 to synthetic DOT 5, for instance, involves a complete system � ush and pressure test by a brake expert. � at’s why there are so many brake shops around – it’s important, critical, highly skilled, and expensive work.

So, if you are su� ciently intimidated, limit yourself to simply knowing how to check brake � uid level so you know when to turn your vehicle over to an expert.

28th Annual July 4th Fireworks at Newnan High School’s Drake Stadium

Presented by Newnan Rotary Club

Th e City of Newnan’s annual Independence Day parade begins at 6 p.m. in downtown Newnan and will end at Newnan High School with a spectacular fi reworks show. Drake Stadium gates will open at 5:30. Admission is free. A pa-triotic program as well as live music, family entertainment and concessions will begin at 6:00. Fireworks will begin promptly at dark.

To avoid potential parking problems arrive early and park in downtown for the parade and walk to the stadium.

“Th is is one of the biggest events in Newnan and Coweta County and it is the biggest event hosted by the Rotary Club,” said Newnan Rotary President Gerald Kemp.

Th is year’s fi reworks extravaganza will be the 28th annual Fourth of July cele-bration and is sponsored by Newnan Rotary Club, the City of Newnan, Coweta County, Coweta County Schools and Newnan/Coweta businesses as a gift to the whole community.

“As always, the event is geared toward families and toward providing an event for the whole community to celebrate our independence. We expect to draw a crowd of thousands fr om around the community as we have over the past 28 years. We hope everyone will att end. It will be spectacular.”

E very November a mouse � nds its way into my house. I think it might be the

same mouse coming back to torture me year a� er year. � e routine is so familiar; it starts out as a phantom shadow I catch in my peripheral vision. My husband insists that it’s my imagination, but I know be� er. I hear it scurrying about behind closed cabinets and I’m sure it’s a ma� er of time before he reveals himself.

� is year it didn’t take long. I was si� ing in my Archie Bunker chair watching TV when all of a sudden it ran alongside the � replace. Now there are a lot of stereotypes that I don’t believe in, but I am proof that there is truth to the ‘screaming housewife who just spied a mouse’ stereotype. I didn’t jump up on a chair or chase it around the house with a broom, but I did scream so loud that even the mouse paused to look at me like I was crazy.

“What’s wrong, are you okay?” my husband asked as he ran into the livingroom.

“It’s that mouse, I just saw him!” My husband let out a groan and rolled his eyes. I unfolded my legs (okay, so I did pull them up), regaining my composure.

“Richard, I know what you’re thinking, but there is a mouse in here and it’s huge.”

“Huge like the tarantula you saw in the bathroom last month?”

“� at spider was so big it had hair,” I said defensively.

“Kelli, daddy long-legged spiders don’t have hair.”

I could see that I was on my own. I set out to � rst prove that there was indeed a mouse in our house. I retrieved the camera, climbed into my safety chair and waited. � ree days, two rolls of � lm and eight crackers later I had my photo. I think the mouse was laughing at me. I pictured him behind the wall lounging on his li� le mouse furniture, nibbling a stolen Ritz cracker, telling the others about his heroic adventures. “You should have seen her crouched over with a camera in one hand and a cup in the other,” he’d be saying, “like I was going to fall for the

old cracker in the cup trick.” I saw the other mice laughing as he paused dramatically to take a bite of the Ritz. “Besides, every time I ran out she just dropped everything and ran screaming; humans are a riot.”

Now I had my proof and that was step one of the extermination process. I rushed the two rolls of � lm to Eckerd Drugs and waited for the one-hour processing, certain that I had numerous angles of my prey. Nevermind that the girl at the photo lab will think my house is infested with rodents. In fact, if she has a good memory she will recall the pictures she recently developed of my toddler si� ing on the livingroom � oor surrounded by Cheerios. I now refer to those photos as Exhibit A when I explain the mouse problem to my children.

My three-year-old, much like my husband, does not grasp the severity of the situation. I see a rodent and she sees Stuart Li� le. She is puzzled as to why I scream every time I see it.

“You don’t do that at the pet store, Mommy,” she said.

“Yeah Mommy,” my husband added.

“� is is di� erent honey,” I said, “this is a wild mouse.” And while deep down I know this is a ridiculous explanation, I stand � rm. I’m not afraid of monkeys at the zoo, but if one crawled out from behind my bookcase I guarantee I would scream like a banshee.

Once I had my snapshot at least everyone believed me about the mouse. � e community must have found out about it because people keep dropping stray cats at my house late at night. How kind.

My husband captured the mouse a� er one quick trip to Home Depot. � e contraption was really not much di� erent than my cracker in the cup trick – minus all the screaming. So, he lives out in the back woods now, at least until next year when we meet again.

“� ank you,” I said to my husband “I can rest easier now, but we do have one other problem - there are seven stray cats outside and honey… they are huge.”

What Generation is Your House Attracting? Gen X, Gen Y or Baby Boomers?

It’s difficult to believe but, Baby Boomers need to move over for Gen X and Gen Y. These are our children and grandchildren and they are buying homes for their families. According to statistics, Gen X ages range from 25 to 48 years old, with Gen Y starting anywhere from 9 to 33 years old. If it’s time to sell your house what generations are you going to attract and is your house ready for them?

So, think about your house…

If all of the bedrooms are upstairs, then your house will probably attract Gen X & Y. If there is a master bedroom on the main level, then more Gen Y’s will be attracted to that floor plan.

Is there a “terrace level” (in the south, we call it a basement) with bedrooms and baths for guest or possibly an in-law suite or young adult living space? This could attract Gen Y or the last of the Baby Boomers.

Starting his 6th year on the Flats, Paul Johnson has made some changes which I think will be evident come this Fall at Georgia Tech. This is good news for all us die hard Jacket fans. He has hired a new defensive coordinator who is bringing a new scheme and a lot of excitement to the GT defensive side of the ball. Rumor has it that the Jackets will run the 3/4 defense which means they will have 3 down linemen and ei-ther 1 or 2 walk ups on each end of the line of scrimmage. I don’t have names and a roster yet so I am hesitant to name anybody who is going to be on this de-fense. However everybody I know who follows the Jackets is excited about what is going on with the Defense. On the other side, there will be some changes made as well. We now have a passing quarterback who can see over the line of scrimmage and can toss the ball 55 plus yards on a rope plus a young but talented receieving core. This will do nothing but enhance the option/run-ning game which coach Johnson has made so famous everywhere he

has been. From 2 National titles at Geor-gia Southern and multiple trips to bowl games while at the Naval academy. (A bowl game was never heard of until John-son took over the reins.) Plus while at GT he has been to a bowl every one of his 5 seasons and from the looks of things he has a good chance to make one this year as well. He did last year win his first bowl appearance. In my most humble opin-ion when GT finds the right recruiting scheme and will start letting Jr. College players come to the program the Jackets under the direction of Paul Johnson will be a force to be reckoned with. We do have a new AD, so maybe he will be the answer. Let us all hope so. Football is starting to crank up for real now, so stay tuned to this article for the wheres and the whys of what is going on. NTC Presents Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland Jr.”

Summer at Newnan Theatre Company is totally dedicated to kids. In addition to the weekly Kids Camp and the Academy of Theatre Arts, NTC is offering Summer Series – 2013, three shows performed entirely by children and teens.

“Alice in Wonderland Jr.,” the first show of the series, opens on June 27 and runs for four performances: Thursday, Friday and Satur-day at 8:00 pm and a Sunday 3:00 pm matinee. Directed by Dave Dorrell, this fast-paced stage adaptation of Disney’s 1951 animat-ed film is performed entirely by a cast of middle schoolers – a first for NTC. Even the choreographer is in middle school – 12-year-old Laney Bunce. She is choreographing three of the song and dance numbers: “The Golden Afternoon,” “The Caucus Race,” and “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah.”

All the children have roles – some are flowers, some are fish, and several are “cards” painting white roses red at the behest of the Queen of Hearts. There are really no “stars.” Some children are playing multiple roles while other roles are shared.

The other two shows in the NTC Summer Series are “Midsum-mer/Jersey,” directed by Katherine Kicklighter, runs July 11-14 and “Spring Awakening,” directed by Mandy Mitchell. “Midsum-mer/Jersey” (mature content) runs July 25-July 28.
