2017 CSP FOOTBALL | WEEK 9 | AT WAYNE STATE | OCT 28, 1 P.M. | MEMORIAL STADIUM | WAYNE, NEB.

MEET THE 2017 TEAM CAPTAINS

Concordia head coach Shannon Currier has announced four captains for the 2017 season with senior tight end Matt Bjork

(De Pere, Wis.) repeating as a two-time captain. He’s joined by seniors Andrew Capirchio (CB, Fountain Hills, Ariz.) and Frantz

Polimice (LB, Palm Bay, Fla.) and fourth year sophomore Rich

Kelly (OG, Plainfi eld, Ill.).

To become a captain, players had to go through an formal applica-tion process that also included reading three books, community ser-vice and obtain letters of recommendation. The team voted on the applicants who completed the process to select its captains.

SERIES NOTES: CONCORDIA 9, WAYNE STATE 9

The series began in 1999 when Concordia joined the NSIC and Division II. The two teams have played every year since, splitting their 18 meetings including an identical home/road split. CSP is 5-5 against WSC in St. Paul and 4-4 against the Wildcats in Wayne. However, the Golden Bears have won two of their last three trips to Wayne America, falling 20-17 last time in 2015 but winning 28-24 in 2013 and 17-14 in 2010 during CSP’s Mineral Water Bowl season. Overall, WSC has on the last three meetings between the programs and four of the last fi ve.

The Golden Bears are 4-1 against WSC under head coach Shan-

non Currier, winning the four meetings during his fi rst stint from 2000-03 including Currier’s only trip to Wayne State in 2001, a 14-11 Golden Bear win.

LAST MEETING, 2016: WAYNE STATE 45, CONCORDIA 10

The Golden Bears and Wildcats combined to turn the ball over nine times, but Concordia committed six of those and didn’t capitalize on the three it forced as WSC outscored CSP 24-3 on turnovers in the contest.

Early in the game, following a Wayne State touchdown in the fi rst quarter, the Bears started the turnover fest as Dominic

Nabak picked up his second interception of the year on a deep pass down the sideline. The Bears scored 10 players later as Jo-

nas Schenderlein converted a 35 yard fi eld goal to start the year 4-4 on fi eld goal tries.

Following the Schenderlein fi eld goal, CSP’s off ense would hit a snag with three punts, two fumbles lost and an interception. The Wildcats capitalized on the turnovers, turning short fi elds in the second quarter into a 24 yard touchdown drive before a 30 yard drive turned into a fi eld goal for a 17-3 halftime lead.

In the fi rst half, Concordia found success on the ground with 15-70 team rushing yards while holding WSC to 23-58 rushing. WSC had success through the air behind quarterback Zach Osborn who completed 15-23 for 158 but CSP intercepted him three times in the fi rst half (Nabak, David Reed, Andrew Capirchio).

In the fi rst half, turnovers were even (3-3) but WSC had built a 10-3 margin off turnovers as Concordia was unable to build mo-mentum off its interceptions of Osborn.

In the second half, Maxon Hutton took over under center and ripped off runs of two, eight and 49 yards to put the Bears in the red zone before the Wildcats picked off a pass in the end zone on fi rst and goal from the seven.

Although CSP’s defense responded with a stop, the Wildcats picked off a pass, their fi fth forced turnover, and returned it for a touchdown for a 24-3 lead midway through the third quarter.

On WSC’s next drive, the Bears had WSC facing a 3rd and 6 from their own 22, but the Wildcats were able to execute a 78 yard touchdown to put the game out of reach, 31-3.

It was a devastating string of events: red zone turnover as CSP was driving, the pick-six by WSC and the big third down touch-down for a 21-point swing.

In the fourth quarter, Ron Johnson re-entered the contest and engineered an 11-play, 75-yard scoring drive that he punched in with his fi fth rushing touchdown of the year on a seven yard keeper. He fi nished 10-28 for 78 yards while Hutton was 5-8 for 52 yards. The duo combined for 130 yards passing. They also combined for 14-67 rushing (Johnson 6-31, Hutton 8-36).

Elias Arlington was the top target with 4-37 receiving while Darius Chapes led the ground game with 10-52, a solid 5.2 per carry while adding 2-27 receiving for 79 combined yards.

Osborn fi nished 18-28-3 for 251 yards and four touchdowns for WSC. Shymere Williams led the Wildcats with 6-160 and two

touchdowns including the 78-yarder. Rashad Trimble led the ground game with 27-94.

Concordia’s defense was led by the early season NSIC tackles leader Sam Johnson with 10, his third double-digit tackle game of the fi rst fi rst fi ve weeks. He added 1.5 of CSP’s 8.0 team TFL.

In addition to his interception, Reed added eight tackles and a tackle for loss while Ryan McKee had six tackles and a sack.

LAST WEEK: #15 SIOUX FALLS 27, CONCORDIA 9

Just a week after leading #13 Winona State 3-0 at the end of the fi rst quarter - CSP’s fi rst lead at the end of the fi rst quarter all season along with the fi rst points scored against WSU’s nation-ally-ranked defense in the fi rst quarter all year - the Bears were back at it again early in the game against a nationally-ranked team with one of the top defenses in the land.

Maxon Hutton broke loose for a 61 yard run on the second play of the game to put CSP in scoring position at the USF 27 yard line. Although the drive stalled, Jonas Schenderlein executed the 46 yard fi eld goal into the wind with plenty of distance for the 3-0 lead just two and a half minutes into play.

Schenderlein tied a CSP record in the game by connecting on three fi eld goals from 46, 29 and 58 - the second longest in school history, just a yard shy of the record. He also had notable misses, a 63-yard try that had the distance and just narrowly missed right, a 54-yarder that was blocked and a 44 yard try that snapped his streak of 16-straight makes inside of 50 yards.

His big day also included three touchbacks on four kickoff s.

The big story was that CSP was able to get in scoring position six times in the game against the second ranked scoring defense, run defense and total defense in Division II football.

Schenderlein’s 58 yard fi eld goal with 7:40 to play in the third quarter brought Concordia within a one score margin, trailing the Cougars 17-9 at the time, and had he been able to convert all six attempts, the Bears could have held an 18-17 lead entering the fourth quarter.

One of Schenderlein’s fi eld goals, his 29 yarder in the second quarter, was set up by freshman Lorenzo Kendricks forcing a fumble recovered by senior Andrew Capirchio at the USF 33.

Concordia, who won the turnover margin 1-0 just a week before against the top ranked turnover team in the country (WSU, +2.17/game), held a 1-0 turnover margin entering the fourth quarter before a fourth quarter interception evened the fi nal tally.

While CSP was able to get in scoring position for six fi eld goals, the defense held the Cougars to fi ve scoring opportunities with USF able to cash in on all fi ve including three touchdowns.

After three quarters, the Cougars only had a 251 to 202 margin in total off ense with CSP rushing for 91 yards in three quarters.

But by game’s end, when USF was able to run with a stiff wind at its back in the fourth quarter, the Cougars fi nished with 231 yards on the ground and 386 yards of total off ense compared to CSP fi nishing 28-93 rushing and 238 yards of total off ense.

The fourth quarter featured USF out-gaining Concordia 135 to 37, leading to the decisive touchdown and fi eld goal to pull away.

The Golden Bear defense held USF to 6-of-14 on third down and forced six Cougar punts. The Bears, who punted fi ve times, had a +14.8 yard advantage in the punting game behind Sam Maedke’s 45.8 average with two inside the 20 and a long of 58.

The defensive eff ort was led by Antonio Zepeda’s 14 tackles followed by Blake Evans with 11. The two linebackers were joined by CSP’s other starting linebacker Billy Brown with nine tackles and 1.0 for loss as the trio racked up 34 tackles.

They played behind a more eff ective defensive line led by Dylan

Wood’s seven tackle, 3.0 TFL, 2.0 sack performance playing in-side between defensive ends Chris Garrett and Jackson Dobbs

who played together for the fi rst time in a game this year.

USF’s defense was led by Dennis Gardeck who entered leading the country with 1.43 sacks per game, adding two more to his total while tallying 4.0 TFL.

Elias Arlington led Concordia’s off ense with 168 all-purpose yards, hauling in 5-82 receiving with a long of 31 to go with 3-86 returning kickoff s with a long of 34.

ABOUT THE WILDCATS

Wayne State had a strong start to the season and was just two plays away from a 6-0 start, falling 23-16 at Northern State in the season opener and 34-31 in double overtime at home to Minnesota Duluth. The big start included blowout wins over U-Mary (48-10) and at Minnesota Crookston (33-14) in the NSIC North along with narrow NSIC South wins at Augustana (16-13) and at home against Southwest Minnesota State (20-6).

The Wildcats have excelled this season at building early leads with a 61-12 margin in the fi rst quarter on the sea-son. Playing with the lead, WSC’s secondary has been aggressive against opposing pass games, leading the country with 16 interceptions. Seven of those intercep-tions came in a week fi ve 16-13 road win over Augus-tana. Glenn Harris is third in the country and leads the league with six interceptions in eight games.

Off ensively, Rashad Trimble leads the team with 673 yards and fi ve touchdowns and is the league’s third leading rusher. The pass game features three players with at least 30 catches led by Layne Sullivan’s 45-456-2 whiel Nate Rogers (30-421) is second in the league with nine receiving touchdowns. Willie Walton (30-420-2) and Sam Wegner (12-315-3) give the team a strong third and fourth option.

Three diff erent QB’s have thrown at least 35 passes led by Zach Osborn (108-192-5, 1480, 14 TD), but he is not listed on WSC’s week eight two deep. Taylor Reedy (20-39-3, 144, 1 TD) is listed as the team’s starting quarter-back this week.

CSP’s pass game combined for 13-34 for 145 yards with Hutton passing for 111 yards with 48 rushing.

Following Hutton’s lead in the run game was Darnell Rolle (9-37) with a 4.1 average and Lajuan Preston adding 3-13.

Jason Towns rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown on 25 car-ries for the Cougars. Ian Fieber completed 13-22 for 155 yards with two touchdowns. Seven of his nine incomplete passes were pass breakups by CSP.

STANDOUT SPECIAL TEAMS UNITS

A preseason emphasis was placed on the importance of special teams across all of the units under special teams coordinator Jake Munkwitz: kickoff and punt coverage, kickoff and punt return, kick and punt block and the kicking game. CSP already brought a pair of All-NSIC specialists to the kicking game, and invested heavily on practice time to ensure the rest of the units would be as effi cient as the two kicking legs.

On coverage, sophomore running back Darnell Rolle leads the special teams with 10 total tackles including three in week one, and nine total on punt coverage. His 12 total tackles rank 18th overall on the team.

Long snapper Dalton Smerchek forced and recovered a fumble on punt coverage in the red zone at BSU, setting up an easy touchdown for the off ense and is second on the team with eight special teams tackles (all on punts).

The team has produced four blocked kicks: Dylan Wood FG vs Minot; Cole Riemer PAT at BSU, Elias Arlington punt at UIU and Antonio Zepeda FG vs WSU. The kicking unit, by comparison, has only allowed one blocked kick (54 yd FG vs USF, wk 8).

Adding a wrinkle to the mix in week fi ve, CSP executed a 35-yard fake punt with punter Sam Maedke connecting with se-nior tight end Justin Axelson against Minnesota State. A 2016 All-NSIC Second Team performer, Maedke is once again among the upper echelon of Division II punters, ranking 31st in DII and 1st in the NSIC (40.7).

In the return game junior Jake Tanner opened the year 3-68 on punt returns with a long of 43 and currently ranks 35th in the country in punt return average (9.9) on the year (11-109). Elias

Arlington added a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in week two and averages 23.6 yards to rank fourth in the NSIC.

Meanwhile, Jonas Schenderlein has produced touchbacks on 22-of-33 kickoff s (best rate in DII football) compared to 15 of 49 by opponents.

Schenderlein is also 10-14 on fi eld goals including a pair of 50-plus yard makes (50, wk 2 at BSU & 58, wk 8 vs USF). His 58 yard fi eld goal is the second longest in DII this year and second lon-gest in CSP history. He ranks 22nd in the country in fi eld goals made (1.25/game) and 44th in percentage (.714).

Originally the eighth head coach of Concordia football in 2000, Shannon Currier returned to lead the program for his second stint in December, 2015.

He entered his fi fth season leading the team in 2016 and remains the program record holder for career winning percentage in year six.

In his fi rst stint, he compiled a 32-12 (.727) record and brought the program its fi rst NSIC Champion-

ship in 2003 when he was named NSIC Coach of the Year. The conference title also brought a berth in the Mineral Water Bowl, the fi rst postseason game in school history.

He coached Concordia to four consecutive winning seasons and is the only coach in program history to achieve the feat - consecutive or cumulative.

THE GRIFF MYTH - PROTECTING HOME TURF

The team also established the longest home winning streak in school history under his guidance. Known to the teams as the “Griff Myth,” Concordia tallied 19 consecutive home victories down the street at Griffi n Stadium. The streak began in 2002 and stretched two years after Currier left through the 2005 sea-son, fi nally falling at the beginning of 2006.

In Currier’s fi rst four years, his teams only lost two home games, producing a record of 18-2 after winning his fi rst and last nine home games.

He opened his return with a 17-0 shutout win over U-Mary in 2016, snapping a 6-game home losing streak and a school re-cord 8-game overall losing streak.

CAREER AT TRUMAN

Following the program’s 2003 NSIC Championship run, Currier ac-cepted the head coach position at Truman (State) University where he turned a losing program into a pair of 6-5 winning campaigns in his third and fourth seasons.

His tenure was highlighted in his third year, leading the Bull-dogs to a 6-3 record in a strong MIAA, fi nishing fourth in the league. He left the program following a 4-7 season in 2008 with a 20-35 overall record.

PRIOR TO REJOINING CONCORDIA’S SIDELINES

Following his departure from Truman, Currier spent seven years working outside of the coaching profession as a senior sales manager with iHigh.com working to build a digital platform for high school sports, reaching up to 1.5 million Minnesotans in his fi nal year with the company.

NSIC BACKGROUND & ST. PAUL PRIVATE EDUCATION

He arrived at Concordia in 1999 as off ensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for former head coach and athletics di-rector Dan O’Brien, now an assistant coach for the University of Minnesota.

Prior to joining Concordia, Currier spent two years each in similar roles at Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota Crookston following his start in college coaching at Bemidji State as an off ensive graduate assistant where earned his mas-ter’s degree in physical education.

A native of Cosmos, Minnesota, Currier was a quar-terback at Hamline University where he graduated with a degree in physical education in 1993.

MEET THE QUARTERBACKS: HUTTON & JOHNSON

In head coach Shannon Currier’s off ensive philosophy, versa-tility is valued across the fi eld from up front, to the backs and receivers and includes the quarterback. The Golden Bears have three multi-faceted quarterbacks on the roster, 2016 starter Ron Johnson, third year spot starter Trevor Tillett and the 2017 starter Maxon Hutton. While comfortable with all three in the huddle, Hutton claimed the starting nod out of camp.

In week one in his fi rst career start, Hutton was not sacked and com-mitted just one turnover while engineering a balanced off ense that played comfortably with the lead in a 24-0 win over Minot.QUICK LOOK: MAXON HUTTON GAME-BY-GAMEWK OPP C-A-I YDS TD RSH TD OFF

Tillett has also played in 11 games in his career, passing for 863 yards and four touchdowns. All three QBs have thrown at least 15 passes in 2017.

100-YARD PERFORMERS

Three diff erent Golden Bears have combined for four 100-yard rushing or receiving performances on the season. It started in week one when sophomores Darnell Rolle (17-107, TD) and Marcus Gustaveson (6-116, TD) topped the century mark via the ground and air, respectively. The duo powered CSP’s 24-0 season opening win over Minot State.

Senior Elias Arlington joined the club in week three with 5-126 and a touchdown through the air against St. Cloud State.

In week four, Rolle topped 100 for the second time with career-highs 22 carries for 172 yards and a touchdown.

GUSTAVESON A BIG THREAT AT WIDE RECEIVER

Sophomore Marcus Gustaveson had a pair of 100-yard games as a true freshman when the lights were shining brightest against UMD (7-115, 2) in week three and Augustana in week 10 (10-129, 1). He led the team in catches (41), yards (564) and touchdowns (5) as a true freshman while missing one game and being slowed in parts of others due to injury. In the spring, he became a two-sport star by breaking the program record in the shot put at the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted on his home turf at Sea Foam Stadium.

He opened 2017 with his third 100-yard receiving game of his career (6-116, TD) in a 24-0 win over Minot. In week six, Gus-taveson had a career-high three TD receptions, hauling in 9-93 at Upper Iowa. He’s 24th in the country and third in the league with seven touchdowns and ranks 19th in the NSIC in yards (378) and 19th in catches (27). He’s had a TD catch in fi ve of CSP’s eight games this year.

ARLINGTON & TANNER EXCEL AT WR & KR/PR

Senior Elias Arlington has emerged as a top threat in the pass game, recording his fi rst career 100-yard receiving game in week three against SCSU (5-126, 1 TD) before posting a career-high eight catches in week four at MSUM (8-80). He’s eighth in the league in receiving yards/game (66.7), 11th in catches (4.3), fourth in KR average (23.6) and fi fth in all-purpose (118.7).

Junior Jake Tanner is the league’s third ranked punt returner (9.9) and is third on the team in catches (18) and receiving yards (181) while compiling 347 all-purpose yards (4th on CSP).

Overall, the receiving corps is based on depth as CSP’s quarter-backs have completed at least two passes to 11 diff erent options and have connected with 13 diff erent receivers on the year. Six players have at least nine catches and fi ve have at least 14 grabs.

YOUTH IN THE SUNSHINE STATE BACKFIELD

Led by true sophomore Darnell Rolle (Miami), Concordia’s run-ning backs share multiple common traits: the top three in the rotation all come from Florida, and all three are underclassmen as Rolle is joined by freshmen Lajuan Preston (Fort Myers) and Shaq Johnson (St. Petersburg).

Rolle is ninth in the NSIC in rushing yards (103-521) and is a dual threat with 9-64 receiving and three total TDs (2 rush, 1 rec). He has two 100-yard performances (17-107, TD vs Minot & 22-172, TD at MSUM) and a combined 100-yard game (21-86 rush, 3-40 rec at UIU).

Preston (24-106, long 46) and Johnson (21-60, TD) have been solid as rookies in relief of Rolle.

OFF. LINE GROWS IN STRENGTH, CONTINUITY

When head coach Shannon Currier was hired in December, 2015 he inherited four off ensive linemen. In 2016, the Golden Bears provided the young off ensive line a chance to compete and play as true freshmen, gaining valuable experience early in

their careers. This year, the starting fi ve up front include junior tackles Ben Lawrence and Terrell Taylor with a sophomore interior of Hunter Kauff man at center sur-rounded by Rich Kelly and Ethan Aune at the guard spots. The team is not expected to play a true freshman up front this year and only has one senior.

So far in 2017, the off ensive line ranks fi fth in the NSIC with just 5.6 tackles for loss per game. The group has developed continuity, with all fi ve starting all seven games with only one exception (Caleb Sheets at RT in week four).

WALLISCH EMERGES AS DEFENSIVE STOPPER AT CB

Just past the midway point of 2017, sophomore Dion

Wallisch has emerged as one of the top defensive players on the team. He held BSU’s All-NSIC second team receiver to 3-21 receiving and upped his eff ort against MSUM’s All-American Damon Gibson to 3-24. He’s also picked off passes against nationally-ranked opponents in the fi rst quarter: against #6 MSU in the end zone and #13 Winona State on its opening drive in CSP territory with a 45-yard return to the WSU red zone, setting up a fi eld goal.

Also a sound tackler, Wallisch is sixth on the team with 38 tackles while leading the team with six pass breakups. He adds a 23.8 average on kickoff returns. As a redshirt fresh-man at Minnesota Crookston in 2015, he was fourth on the team with 56 tackles including 4.5 for loss. He missed last year at UMC due to medical reasons and joined CSP at the semester break last winter.

Senior captain Andrew Capirchio returns at the other starting corner spot after working his way into spot starts in 2016 as a junior transfer from Scottsdale CC. He’s made 33 tackles with three pass breakups on the year. Redshirt freshman Desmond Hudnall and true freshman Lorenzo Kendricks provide depth at CB with Kendricks forcing a fumble and adding a high of seven tackles against USF in week eight.

100 TACKLE CLUB

Three senior Golden Bears have topped the 100-tackle plateau and represent each level of the defense. In the secondary, senior safety Breon Hoosier leads all players with 131 career tackles including 30 in 2017. Up front, its fourth year starting nose tackle Chazz Roberts with 125 including 22 for loss and fi ve sacks. He’s made 28 tackles and 2.5 TFL so far this year. Leading the linebacking corps is JJ Przybylka with 101 career tackles including 5.5 for loss. He’s made three tackles while battling injury during his senior campaign. The next closest to reaching 100 is junior safety Brandon Russell with 89.

DEFENSIVE LINE BATTLING THROUGH INJURIES

The 2017 defensive line has experienced a number of injuries. Through week eight, the statistical leader up front has been Dylan Wood (44 TT, 7.5 TFL, 4.0 SK). Wood has had back-to-back 3.0 TFL games against #13 WSU & #15 USF including his fi rst 2.0 sack game against USF. Senior Chazz Roberts has had a strong year in-side, creating chaos for opposing lines while piling up 28 tackles and 2.5 TFL.

Adding youth to the mix is true freshman Chris Gar-

rett who produced a strip sack and recovered the fumble in his debut in a 24-0 shoutout win over Minot in the opener. Although he missed weeks two through fi ve, he came back with a pair of sacks and eight tack-les in week six at Upper Iowa and has amassed 23 tack-les, 4.0 TFL and 3.0 sacks in just four games. Garrett fi nally got to play his fi rst snaps with veteran Jackson

Dobbs in week eight against USF as each lineman has missed four contests this year. Dobbs has 16 tackles, 1.0 TFL and 1.0 sacks.

EVANS BREAKING THROUGH AT LINEBACKER

Freshman Blake Evans has nudged his way into the starting lineup the last three weeks and is now second on the team in tackles (61) following a team-season high 14 tackles against #13 Winona State and 11 more last week against #15 Sioux Falls. He has 40 tackles in the last four games and at least three tackles every game in 2017. Senior Billy Brown has registered 43 stops including 21 over a two game period against SCSU (8 TT, 1.0 TFL, 1 SK) and at MSUM (13 TT). Sopho-

more Antonio Zepeda earned his fi rst start of 2017 against Winona State, creating a disturbance with eight tackles, 1.0 TFL, a forced fumble and blocked a third quarter fi eld goal. Zepeda followed it up with a career-high 14 tackles in week eight against #15 Sioux Falls.

SZUTKOWSKI A TACKLES MACHINE AT SAFETY

Sophomore Brian Szutkowski has led the team in tackles for a majority of the season, producing 68 tackles in eight games to rank seventh in the Northern Sun. He’s had three double-digit

eff ort and ius coming off a career-high 14 tackles against Winona State. He’s also had a pair of games with 11 tackles and has made at least fi ve tackles in every game this year.

Senior strong safety Breon Hoosier had a 2017 season opener with a pair of sacks blitzing Minot from the secondary in a 24-0 shutout win. Now a fourth year contributor, Hoosier has 131 career tackles, 6.0 for loss, and eight pass breakups with one interception.
