8) Grey Time, TheRecorded: read by EM, February 14, 2004.Comment: Because he couldn’t bear to attend the funeral of his best friend, this verse was Nolan’s gift to the widow of Lloyd Perryman. A title was provided by Calin Coburn.

9) Half Way ‘Round the World (A)Recorded: March 17, 1944, for the 10-2-4 Ranch radio program.Pioneers: Martha Mears sang the song as a solo with Sons of the Pioneers instrumental backup.Instrumentation: Carson, Fisher, Farr Brothers plus The Tune Twirlers.Comments: This first known version of the song is included here to illustrate Bob’s original intention of using the word vagrant, which was later changed to fragrant. Vagrant was a favorite word of Nolan’s.

There is also a puzzle here : it sounds like Perryman singing the “breeze” sound in the introduction. If that is so, it means the song was recorded before he was drafted in April of 1943 in anticipation of the time he would be away at war,2 not while he was in Burma.

10) Half Way ‘Round the World (B)Recorded: January 19, 1966 RCAPioneers: Lanham, guitar. Perryman sang the solo.Instrumentation: P. Botkin, leader; P. Jolly, piano; M. Pohlman, E. Coleman, A. 2 P. 35, Griffis. “While Lloyd was stationed halfway around the world in Burma, a deeply moved Bob Nolan wrote, ‘Half Way ‘Round the World’ for Lloyd and his wife, Buddie. Lloyd was to include it years later in an album of Nolan songs. He would have recorded it sooner, but as he recalled, ‘Every time I started to do the song, my voice would break as it reminded me so much of those years I spent apart from my family.’”

3 Man Walks Among Us is a beautiful song so I told Bob I’d like to record it. So Bob told me, he said, “Snuff, do you think Marty would mind…I’d like to change a couple of the words in there.” So when Marty got there I said, “Marty, Bob wanted to change this and ….” He said, “Oh, God, that’s exciting enough, that he would even take the time to want to change anything.” You know. Then I asked Marty to sing harmony with him on the bridge and he came in...and that was another highlight. We had a good time recording. Snuff Garrett to Larry Hopper on WFDU, Teaneck, NJ, July 6, 19804 If he could have done it a key or two lower I would have liked it better, but that was the key that Bob was singing it in so I did the best I could to sing a little higher than I would usually sing. (Marty Robbins to Larry Hopper on WFDU, Teaneck, NJ, July 6, 1980)
