THE EXTRA MILE

While David McCasland was waiting for an eye examination, he was struck by a statement that he

saw in the optometrist’s office; “Eighty percent of everything children learn in their first 12 years is through their eyes.” He began thinking of all that children process through reading, television, film, events, surroundings and observing the behaviour of others especially their families.

In celebrating father’s day we should think about that powerful influence a dad can have in his children. Apostle Paul urged fathers not to frustrate their children, but to bring them up in training and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4).

Here’s a story by Jay Payleitner... a dad made a great influence because of “the extra mile”.

For weeks Randy had been telling me how much fun he was having playing intramural football. Maybe it was his talk of diving catches and trick plays, but I felt this sudden urge to cheer him on, like we had in high school.

Just several hours earlier Rita and I had met him at the field. It was a crisp fall evening perfect football weather. I was pumped. Randy introduced us to his teammates.

“You really came all this way just to see us?” they asked incredulously. The cheering section consisted of Rita, me and an injured player on crutches. But we didn’t mind. We watched the kids stretch and warm up, run through some drills and then…there was some sort of delay. Randy ran over. “The other team had to forfeit,” he said. “They don’t have enough players.” I tried to hide my disappointment.

No big deal, unless you’ve just driven three hours to get there. We took Randy out for pie and coffee.

Nice, but I had my heart set on seeing him in action. I wanted to cheer for my son. Now, slowing the car I couldn’t help thinking that the whole idea had been foolish. I was behind on work. I really needed to clean out the garage. I thought of all the T-ball games and soccer matches, band concerts and science fairs

I have gone to over the years for our five children. Once, Rita and I even snuck into Randy’s English class to see him perform a skit.

We had been the only parents there that day too. I worked hard to be a supportive

dad, but was I trying too hard? Ahead I saw a bridge crossing over the

Fox River. A distant memory stirred…from back when I was a Boy Scout.

Every fall our troop made a two-day, 40-mile canoe journey down the Fox.

There was one year I would never forget. My dad dropped my brother Mark and me at the launch, made sure our life vests were snug and said goodbye as our flotilla set off.

I plunged my paddle into the water and pulled hard, then lifted and stroked again.

Mark, in front, did the same. Before long we had a good rhythm going. I wish Dad could see us, I thought, about a mile downriver we came to a bridge.

I looked up and there he was. Dad was standing right in the middle of the span. He didn’t shout instructions or do anything embarrassing.

He simply waved until we passed underneath. I looked back and he was gone. Huh? Was I just imagining him but several miles later, at the next overpass, there he was again and the one after another. The next it turned into a game. The whole troop began looking for him. Every time we rounded a bend that day someone would shout, “There’s Mr. Payleitner!” All the boys were waving now, but no one was happier to see him than I was.

My dad had taken a chance and literally gone the extra mile (and then some) to show us his love. All these years later it had never left me. Now I drove across the bridge in the darkness. I imagined Dad standing there, waving, still encouraging me. It made me think of a nightly prayer I’d said when we were younger, asking God to help me be the kind of dad my kids need. At last I understood the most important thing I could do for my children—just be there, even if it meant going the extra mile, the way my dad did for me, cheering me on.

Mr. Payleitner was not perfect but he moved in the right direction. A great power for good is at work when our actions reflect the character of God, rather than distort it.

Thus, it is challenging for any parent so Paul urges us to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Only through His strength can we reflect the love and patience of our Heavenly Father.

AM I PROUD TO BE PINOY?

We have just celebrated the Philippines' 116th Independence Day and I

must say we have come a long way but we are not there yet.

I am one proud citizen of the country and I have admired those who have fought for our freedom and took us where we are now.

I have felt how the landscape, culture and economy of the country has changed throughout the years and I am happy that we have managed to survive amidst all the natural and man-made calamities our country has faced.

We are a resilient nation and have struggled to keep afloat for centuries.

We have risen from the fight against colonizers and those that trampled our honor and dignity, we survived countless disasters and even had the capacity to just shrug them off and smile.

However, amidst all the developments, progress and accolades we as a nation have experienced, we must bear in mind that the fight for freedom should never stop.

Today, the warfare has taken a new form and if we do not act on it, then we will become enslaved again. Look around you and see how cultures from other countries have creeped in slowly replacing the ones we once had.

I am not against globalization for it has its merits but we must keep in mind that we have an identity to keep and preserve so

that when we are out there in the global village mingling with our neighbors, we will not just blend with them but we will stand out.

We should always be aware to not just take in influences but become the “influencer” as well.

Pop culture for instance has pervaded so much of today's generation and we still can do something about it, we have so many artists who are at par or even better than those who come from abroad.

If we patronize local artists more and encourage them to create better works then we can perhaps in the future import our own brand of pop and not just gobble up what the other countries are serving.

There's another thing that we have to fight for - our natural resources.

We own these natural resources because they are found here in our own land.

However, it seems like we are so happy to give them away!

Parcels of land have become sites to mineral mining that caused the flattening of mountains and staining of our seas. This horror is real yet we chose ignore it because there is money in mining.

Yes, there truly is but sadly the amount of money these foreign mining firms are pouring in is lesser than the amount of money they have sucked out of our country.

We are in the losing end. We gave them more than what we have bargained for.

If these practices continue, don't wonder later and ask what happened to the Philippines.

Our resources should be enjoyed by our people and we give away the excess if there is any.

That should have been the case in order for us to live sustainably.

These two things - our national identity and the gifts of our land must be something we all must guard against all odds then the true essence of freedom will be enjoyed by generations to come.

So, am I proud to be Pinoy? Yes, I still am. I have high hopes that we as a country can still do better.

We are far from becoming one of the superpowers of the world but I believe we should not aspire to be one.

As long as we continue to fight for our freedom, our rights and our resources and as long as we value the welfare of our people more than anybody else's then we will be alright.

Let us stop comparing ourselves to the first world countries or we will continue to be get frustrated. How about shifting our mindsets and appreciate all the goodness that we have in our country. We have so many blessings to be thankful for and as long as we value all of them nothing can topple us down.

Be happy that you are a Filipino and continue to become the savior of your motherland in any way you can.

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRETennessee Williams (1914-

1983, correct name Thomas Lanier, US-American dramatist) wrote this novel. The real or correct title could be better translated into "Terminus Desire". Terminus? Why not describe it as final spurt or ultimate goal?

What's life all about? We really can't share Alice's wonderland every day. We also can't smell "all the perfumes of Arabia" as described in Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" every day. And again, once more Shakespeare: we should learn already that "caviar to the general" happens seldom, especially nowadays all around the globe.

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), the US-American statesman and author has said: "Early to bed and really to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise!" I tried it, at first, everything went like clockwork, but it worked not always and in every situation.

Everything - from the most significant sun to the worthless weed, each and everything has its own reason and simple answer to the question: "Why are we in

this world?" What we sometimes only miss, is a little bit more love in this world! What is love? It's interesting, yet unexplainable. I tried it already in my previous column at this corner.

According to the Greek words, there are different kinds of love: 1. EROS - a kind of love that always expect something in return; 2. FILIO - a love that springs out of blood relationship, race or any kind of affiliation; and 3. AGAPE - a love that doesn't choose and love without bonds.

Do we love our enemies? Do we forgive people who hurt us? Love, to sum it up, is to suffer willingly without retaliation. Love is sharing generously and cheerfully our time, effort, talent, money (?) and treasure in any way we can. Likewise, we are in this world to experience joy as well as sorrow. In times of trails, we grumble: "Lord, why did you give this to me?" To blame and question God are common gestures, as well as looking for the streetcar named Desire. For all trials and tribulations, we are terrified and run away - but guys, there is no way out! We

are trapped inside and, whether we like it or not, we are forced to carry the load. Yet, we keep groping for answers, answers remaining mute... .

Terminus Desire, as I said before: Why not final spurt or ultimate goal? Finally, we have our own goals, and we can reach our dreams, we can be wealthy and famous, we can have all the glory and honor. We can - and not only a handful people... . But while we are searching for material satisfaction, we must also search for wealth in heaven.

Maybe that doesn't come up to our expectations and being left behind, is just the simple streetcar named Desire. Desire for a little bit better life with families, friends, co-workers and neighbors, who are ready to join us on the same path.

This summer, having a summer vacation didn’t present itself, I competed in two tournaments - one was the 2nd Mayor’s Cup Football Festival in Manticao which I played alongside my cousins and friends. We played in the

Then just before the end of May, I got to compete, together with my CDO teammates, in the 1st Nestle – CDO Action Air Cup.

Action Air is a practical shooting competition using Gas Blow Back pistol systems and bb’s as bullets. Action Air is recognized by the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) and Philippine Practical Shooting Association (PPSA). I was hesitant to join the competition at first as I haven’t trained at all for quite some time now. So I joined a “fun shoot” session with my teammates just to get the feel of it again, before the competition – or even before deciding to compete or not. I did.

And here’s what I learned:

COMPETITION IS ALWAYS, WELL,A COMPETITION.

I was in the Open Division of the competition – Open means the firearms are modified from its stock form with optics, red dots and other accessories aiding the shooter to shoot faster. I was up against two of my teammates and one of them is Franz – sure can’t beat the guy even when I’m pushing to. That didn’t stop me though. Just played like I was having fun to take out all the pressure – then the Dipolog Team arrives, Harydon played in our division. Darn, the guy was lightning fast and accurate – easily dropping me and Franz and Geobz off the top spot. Then an unfortunate incident in his final stage caused him a “DQ” or disqualification – which brought Franz back on the top spot. And eventually Franz took home the championship trophy and I got the 1st Runner Up trophy. But the score difference between me and Franz was about 200+ points – yep, that’s me – slow. I said to myself: “safety, focus, and accuracy are my best friends now that speed is not with me today”. That helped a lot. Our squad was comprised of Kenneth (Standard), Michael (Standard), Geobz (Open), Franz (Open), and myself.

YOUR MIND, HEART, SOUL, BODYAND FIREARM SHOULD BE IN TOP CONDITION.

Preparation was key to that competition, obviously I didn’t prepare well enough – was just lucky I guess. What was more important to me that day (this being my first competition in Action Air) was testing my accuracy, and didn’t mind how slow I was. Safety first was always at the back of my mind – as the terrain was slippery due to the previous night’s rainfall, and the stages were difficult… I repeat – difficult.

LEARN FROM MORE EXPERIENCED COMPETITORS. WALKTHROUGH.

R-Ten Practical Shooters Association Founding President Rey Abas came to run the stages on the second day and gave us very helpful insights how to program and time our runs. Being the most experienced in the squad, we had to listen and adjust those scenarios to our movements. Glad we did.

FRIENDSHIP MATTERS, HAVE FUN, AND BY ALL MEANS – DOCUMENT THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE.

It’s fun competing with friends and against them. Somehow, we push each other to be the very best – not to mention father Franz’s “daily group text prayer for shooters” blasting through our mobiles. We didn’t do selfies though hahaha but we took turns on photographing our runs – of course naman pang facebook eh – to help us promote the sport and encourage others to give it a try.

DRY FIRE, ADJUST QUICKLY, THINK EVEN FASTER. Dry Fire is a practical shooting exercise where the shooter holsters his firearm

and does drills on how to draw the firearm, aim, pull the trigger, reloading magazines, and so on. I realized how important dry firing is when at the very first stage we ran was the uphill stage. When I ran, I quickly aimed to engage my first target but it took me about a second to find the red dot on my scope – one second sounds fast enough, right? – in practical shooting, anything than a fraction of a second is SLOW. But I adjusted quickly and thought faster as my heart was pounding. So I did my best in that competition, but that won’t stop me from pushing it harder.

Manila Southwoods dominates the 22nd LUZVIMIN Golf Tournament, with Annika Cedo, Sunshine Baraquiel, Ma. Sofia Chabon, and Sophia Ysabel Blanco bringing home the crown of the Diamond Division with 622 points.

As the annual tournament of the Women’s Golf Association of the Philippines (WGAP) comes to a close, the battle between the ladies of Villamor and Del Monte for the second rank has been intense. Harmie Constantino and Chanelle Avaricio led the Pasay-based team

to a two-point win (574 pts) against the home favourite Del Monte group (572 pts) with Pamela Mariano and Rainstar Roque heading the pack.

Lorenz Kayla Nocum and the ladies of Valley 1 (501 pts) grasp the prize for the Emerald Division, with Forest Hills (496 pts) as runner-up. Virgie Hermiston’s Davao City (443 pts) triumph in the Ruby Division, followed by the ladies of Valley 2 (426 pts).

Del Monte keeps local pride alive when two players are declared champions in the individual category: Pamela Mariano (Championship flight) and Annika Michelle Mendoza (Class A).

Harmie Constantino from the Villamor team bags the overall top

award for the individual game. Meanwhile, Belinda del Rosario of Valley 2 wins in Class B and Rose Sara of Davao City in Class C.

Pueblo de Oro Golf & Country Club hosts the golf invitational, which rotates around the various courses in the country, encouraging camaraderie and friendly competition among lady golfers. Usually the tournament is held in August, but this year the WGAP decided to conduct it in early June and the decision has paid off.

“We have a good turnout,” said Marissa Romano, WGAP President. “The weather has been perfect and the ladies are having a very wonderful experience here at Cagayan de Oro City.”

Waiting outside the mayor's office, I saw how buzzing it was. I came straight

from my high school class and it was already the few minutes before the end of a day's work, but truly, he is a very busy man still to keep his appointments with many people waiting in line to meet with him.

So when it was finally my time and I entered his office, I was a bit worried that he would already be tired and worn out. Yet amazingly I was greeted by a very friendly and smiling Honorable Mayor Oscar Moreno. Despite being the leader of a busy city, he was very willing

to step out of his "pure government business" position for a couple of minutes to sit and talk about his views on fatherhood.

So I started with Q: Aside from being the Father

of Cagayan de Oro City, you are also a father. How many children do you have and what are their ages?

Mayor Moreno: "I have three children; the eldest is Sean Oliver and he is 38. The second is Imee Rose, 36, who was named after Imelda, her maternal lola and Milagros, her paternal lola. And then the third one is Oscar Jr. and he'll be 34." The Mayor was slowly

speaking, giving me time to write and even spelling out the names so I can get them correctly.

Q: What is your most vivid memory of being a father? What are the moments with your family you hold most precious?

Mayor Moreno: "My most vivid memory as a father is of course the graduations and looking at your children happy... conquering themselves. And of course, enjoying each other's company. I think my precious moments with my family are the holidays: Christmases, New Years, birthdays, anniversaries..."

I want to also have an idea of the mayor as a child, so I asked

Q: What is the name of your father? What is your most vivid memory of your father?

Mayor Moreno: "Emeterio Sr. When he would attend to his patients; he was a rural doctor. I could see how committed he was, attending to his barrio patients."

Q: Was becoming a lawyer- then a governor and a mayor- the dream of your father for you?

Mayor Moreno smiled and answered: "I don't know, but I'm sure he just wanted me to succeed. I failed him in my younger days and he was quite frustrated but I tried to make up to him. And I think he was happy with what I have been but I could sense his disappointment when I got married immediately after graduation." [laughs]

Q: As the Mayor of the city, what programs do you have for the young children of Cagayan de Oro to help them have a better future?

The government servant within the father came out and Mayor Moreno said excitedly: "Education, Education, Education. What we're doing is addressing the annex high school problems. We're coming up with separate and independent campuses for the annex high schools. The barangays wanted to have their own high schools so hopefully they will have their own building and they will no longer be using the facility of the elementary schools. I hope to relieve the congested schools. I want to address the education of the young, because education cannot be compromised."

I knew I could not stay long as

much as I wanted so I asked him a little personal question.

Q: Mayor, you have a daughter. As a father, how did you react towards suitors? What is your most important advice to young girls like me?

Mayor Moreno smiled: "Of course, I did not resent suitors. I wasn't against my daughter being courted because it was part of growing up. And what's important was she grew up normally, and that's all that mattered. So my advice for younger girls is grow normally. Grow as normally as you can. And of course, it's not unusual to have your first crush, or your first love, but do not engage in activities that are beyond normal boundaries. Grow normally and don't forget the boundaries."

So knowing that my time was up, here was my final question.

Q: What are your tips for fathers like you? Any Do's and Don'ts you want to share with them?

The Mayor, in his wisdom, said: "I'm not a perfect father, I've had my mistakes and how I wished I could have done better. So I guess my advice to other fathers is: Don't lose your patience". [laughs]

I laughed with him and then thanked him for his time. Getting ready to leave his office, and holding on to my clipboard with questions and notes, I heard him remark, "You ask very mature questions." I just smiled because actually I was nervous with my first interview. Well, Mister Mayor, thank you for sharing with us and allowing us this chance to get to know you on a special level.
