ArabiaPlast 2006... A GREAT SUCCESS

The Minister receives a commemorative gift

The latest innovations in Plastic Surgery were discussed at the ArabiaPlast 2006 Congress, 10th 13th April 2006, under the pa-tronage of H.E. Dr. Nada Abbas Haffadh, Minister of Health who was present to officially open theCongress.

The Congress was held in Bahrain and hosted by Dr. Tariq Saeed, Presi-dent of the ArabiaPlast Congress, President of the GCC Association of Plastic Surgeons.

It was the largest Plastic, Burns and Reconstructive Surgery conference to be held in the Arab region; with over 430 Surgeons, Dermatologists and other health professionals from more than 30 countries attending this enor-mously successful event held at the Bahrain Conference Centre, Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Along side the planned schedule of events there was a Medical Exhibition which enabled companies to dem-onstrate the latest advances in their products and technology, including the Middle East product launch by Astron-Clinica a UK based company, of SIAs-copy which is used to diagnose skin

cancer in minutes without the need for any surgically invasive procedure.

The Congress also included various workshops with topics, such as skin cancer diagnosis; wound healing and management; cleft lip and palate sur-gery and skin rejuvenation.

A Gala Dinner was held on the final

evening before the conclusion of the Congress. Sponsors and invited guest speakers were honoured and thanked for their contribution towards the success of the Congress and all delegates were given the opportunity for some social activity.

Q. Is it advisable to have a tummy tuck at the same time as caesarian section delivery.

A. In our opinion, no, it is not advisable to under-go tummy tuck with caesarian section because immediately on delivery the skin and muscles are very lax under the effect of hormones and the stretching effect of pregnancy. After pregnancy and lactation, a large amount of skin and muscle laxity reduces. This reduction may even negate the need for surgery. After six to nine months it is advisable to reassess the stomach muscles and skin to determine if there is a need for abdomino-plasty (tummy tuck).

FillersA number of prod-ucts are available for smoothing wrinkles, fillingout folds and giving fullness and contour to the face. These give a natural enhancement to the features and restore a youth-ful appearance to the skin. These treatments may delay or replace the necessity for surgery on the face. While most of these products are not permanent, they are long lasting. How long a treatment holds its effects is very individual and depends on many factors such as age, skin type, lifestyle and muscle activity. Most patients choose to have a follow up treatment six months to one year after the initial treatment for wrinkles or facial contouring. After lip treatments, a follow up is normally needed after six months.

Over the years Mesotherapy has been used for many conditions including spot weight reduction, cellulite reduc-tion, hair rejuvenation, double chin re-duction, wrinkle elimination and skin rejuvenation.Mesotherapy is a medical technique in-vented by Dr. Michel Pistor in 1952 and has been used to successfully by over 15,000 physicians to treat many condi-tions for the last 50 years. It works by delivering a combination of vitamins, minerals and natural en-zymes, directly beneath the surface of the skin using a very fine needle, whichis approximately the width of an eye-lash. This is introduced in tiny amounts to a specific area of the body depend-ing on the condition being treated.

By using this method a mixture of natu-ral substances can be delivered direct-ly into the fat and connective tissue just under the skin’s surface to melt the fat beneath the skin and shrink fat cells.Using Mesotherapy to rejuvenate the skin is called a Mesolift. In this proce-dure vitamins are injected under the skin into the cells, activating them and stimulating natural collagen and elastin production, leaving the skin radiant and glowing. After a Mesotherapy treatment, normal activity can be resumed immediately,

causing no inconvenience to the pa-tient. Mesotherapy is also very safe with no long term side effects having been reported when the treatment is delivered by an experienced practi-tionerEach treatment only takes about ten minutes, is relatively painless (patients have described the sensation as a momentary light pinch), and allows its users to immediately return to normal activities. The procedure is performed weekly or every 2-3 weeks. Most treat-ments require multiple sessions, al-though a full course of treatment might take more than 10 sessions. When the desired effects are achieved all that is required is a monthly maintenance treatment.

Laser hair removal has proven to be a very popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure; It is a non-invasive, con-venient way to permanently reduce unwanted facial or body hair.

Technique: The process takes from several min-utes to several hours, depending on the area of the body involved. Laser hair removal uses a low-energy laser. The laser energy passes through the patient’s skin, being absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. A percent-age of the follicles are instantaneously and permanently disabled with each treatment. In most cases, no anesthe-sia is necessary.

Benefits:• A non-invasive, gentle technique that eliminates undesirable hair from all parts of the body.

• Leaves skin looking smoother and silkier.

• Treats larger areas effectively be-cause it removes more than one hair at a time.

• Minimal discomfort. • Replaces waxing, electrolysis and

razors. • Immediate return to normal activi-

ties. Other Considerations:• An ongoing process that requires

multiple sessions. • Sometimes there is a temporary

slight reddening of the skin or local-ized swelling.

• May have to use specially formu-lated skin care products, and/or a prescribed skin care regimen. Sun-screen is recommended for any treated areas exposed to the sun.

• Patients with darker pigmentation

may not respond well. • Blonde, white or gray hairs are less

responsive to laser treatments and sometimes cannot be treated.
